Form factors and generalized hydrodynamics for integrable systems

Our review covers microscopic foundations of generalized hydrodynamics (GHD). As one generic approach we develop form factor expansions, for ground states and generalized Gibbs ensembles (GGE). In the latter case the so obtained results are compared with predictions from GHD. One cornerstone of GHD are the GGE averaged microscopic currents, which can also be obtained through employing form factors. Discussed is a second, completely orthogonal approach based on the availability of a self-conserved current.

High-low pressure domain wall for the classical Toda lattice

We study the classical Toda lattice with domain wall initial conditions, for which left and right half lattice are in thermal equilibrium but with distinct parameters of pressure, mean velocity, and temperature. In the hydrodynamic regime the respective space-time profiles scale ballisticly. The particular case of interest is a jump from low to high pressure at uniform temperature and zero mean velocity. Thereby the scaling function for the average stretch (also free volume) is forced to change sign. By direct inspection, the hydrodynamic equations for the Toda lattice seem to be singular at zero stretch. In our contribution we report on numerical solutions and convincingly establish that nevertheless the self-similar solution exhibits smooth behavior.

On the open Toda chain with external forcing

We consider the open Toda chain with external forcing, and in the case when the forcing stretches the system, we derive the longtime behavior of solutions of the chain. Using an observation of Jürgen Moser, we then show that the system is completely integrable, in the sense that the $2N$-dimensional system has $N$ functionally independent Poisson commuting integrals, and also has a Lax-Pair formulation. In addition, we construct action-angle variables for the flow. In the case when the forcing compresses the system, the analysis of the flow remains open.

Collision rate ansatz for quantum integrable systems

For quantum integrable systems the currents averaged with respect to a generalized Gibbs ensemble are revisited. An exact formula is known, which we call "collision rate ansatz". While there is considerable work to confirm this ansatz in various models, our approach uses the symmetry of the current-charge susceptibility matrix, which holds in great generality. Besides some technical assumptions, the main input is the availability of a self-conserved current, i.e. some current which is itself conserved. The collision rate ansatz is then derived. The argument is carried out in detail for the Lieb-Liniger model and the Heisenberg XXZ chain. The Fermi-Hubbard model is not covered, since no self-conserved current seems to exist. It is also explained how from the existence of a boost operator a self-conserved current can be deduced.

Nonlinear Fluctuating Hydrodynamics for the Classical XXZ Spin Chain

Using the framework of nonlinear fluctuating hydrodynamics (NFH), we examine equilibrium spatio-temporal correlations in classical ferromagnetic spin chains with nearest neighbor interactions. In particular, we consider the classical XXZ-Heisenberg spin chain (also known as Lattice Landau Lifshitz or LLL model) evolving deterministically and chaotically via Hamiltonian dynamics, for which energy and $z$-magnetization are the only locally conserved fields. For the easy-plane case, this system has a low-temperature regime in which the difference between neighboring spin's angular orientations in the XY plane is an \textit{almost conserved} field. According to the predictions of NFH, the dynamic correlations in this regime exhibit a heat peak and propagating sound peaks, all with anomalous broadening. We present a detailed molecular dynamics test of these predictions and find a reasonably accurate verification. We find that, in a suitable intermediate temperature regime, the system shows two sound peaks with Kardar-Parisi-Zhang (KPZ) scaling and a heat peak where the expected anomalous broadening is less clear. In high temperature regimes of both easy plane and easy axis case of LLL, our numerics show clear diffusive spin and energy peaks and absence of any sound modes, as one would expect. We also simulate an integrable version of the XXZ-model, for which the ballistic component instead moves with a broad range of speeds rather than being concentrated in narrower peaks around the sound speed.

The collision rate ansatz for the classical Toda lattice

Considered is a generalized Gibbs ensemble of the classical Toda lattice. We establish that the collision rate ansatz follows from (i) the charge-current susceptibility matrix is symmetric and (ii) the stretch current is proportional to the momentum, hence conserved.

The 1+1 dimensional Kardar-Parisi-Zhang equation: more surprises

In its original version the KPZ equation models the dynamics of an interface bordering a stable phase against a metastable one. Over past years the corresponding two-dimensional field theory has been applied to models with different physics. Out of a wide choice, the spin-spin time correlations for the Heisenberg chain will be discussed at some length, also the equilibrium time-correlations of the conserved fields for 1D fluids. An interesting recent theoretical advance is the construction of the scale-invariant asymptotic theory, the so-called KPZ fixed point.

Generalized Gibbs Ensembles of the classical Toda chain

The Toda chain is the prime example of a classical integrable system with strictly local conservation laws. Relying on the Dumitriu-Edelman matrix model, we obtain the generalized free energy of the Toda chain and thereby establish a mapping to the one-dimensional log-gas with an interaction strength of order 1/N. The (deterministic) local density of states of the Lax matrix is identified as the object, which should evolve according to generalized hydrodynamics. In the current version missing factors of 2 are corrected.

Ballistic space-time correlators of the classical Toda lattice

The Toda lattice is an integrable system and its natural space-time stationary states are the generalized Gibbs ensembles (GGE). Of particular physical interest are then the space-time correlations of the conserved fields. To leading order they scale ballistically. We report on the exact solution of the respective generalized hydrodynamic equations linearized around a GGE as background state. Thereby we obtain a concise formula for the family of scaling functions.

The GGE averaged currents of the classical Toda chain

The Toda chain with random initial data is studied. Of particular interest are generalized Gibbs ensembles, their averaged conserved fields, and the averages of the corresponding currents. While averaged fields are well-understood, the description of averaged currents has hitherto relied on the collision-rate assumption. For the Toda chain, the rate assumption can be investigated numerically. Here, we provide convincing evidence for the validity of the rate assumption. This lends further support to the idea that generalized Euler-type equations have a structure common to all integrable extensive systems.

Kardar-Parisi-Zhang Scaling for an Integrable Lattice Landau-Lifshitz Spin Chain

Recent studies report on anomalous spin transport for the integrable Heisenberg spin chain at its isotropic point. Anomalous scaling is also observed in the time-evolution of non-equilibrium initial conditions, the decay of current-current correlations, and non-equilibrium steady state averages. These studies indicate a space-time scaling with $x \sim t^{2/3}$ behavior at the isotropic point, in sharp contrast to the ballistic form $x \sim t$ generically expected for integrable systems. In our contribution we study the scaling behavior for the integrable lattice Landau-Lifshitz spin chain. We report on equilibrium spatio-temporal correlations and dynamics with step initial conditions. Remarkably, for the case with zero mean magnetization, we find strong evidence that the scaling function is identical to the one obtained from the stationary stochastic Burgers equation, alias Kardar-Parisi-Zhang equation. In addition, we present results for the easy-plane and easy-axis regimes for which, respectively, ballistic and diffusive spin transport is observed, whereas the energy remains ballistic over the entire parameter regime.

Fourier's law based on microscopic dynamics

While Fourier's law is empirically confirmed for many substances and over an extremely wide range of thermodynamic parameters, a convincing microscopic derivation still poses difficulties. With current machines the solution of Newton's equations of motion can be obtained with high precision and for a reasonably large number of particles. For simplified model systems one thereby arrives at a deeper understanding of the microscopic basis for Fourier's law. We report on recent, and not so recent, advances.

Effective mass of the polaron -- revisited

Properties of the energy-momentum relation for the Fröhlich polaron are of continuing interest, especially for large values of the coupling constant. By combining spectral theory with the available results on the central limit theorem for the polaron path measure we prove that, except for an intermediate range of couplings, the inverse effective mass is strictly positive and coincides with the diffusion constant. Such a result is established also for polaron-type models with a suitable ultraviolet cut-off and for arbitrary values of the coupling constant. We point out a slightly stronger variant of the central limit theorem which would imply that the energy-momentum relation has a unique global minimum attained at zero momentum.

High frequency limit for a chain of harmonic oscillators with a point Langevin thermostat

We consider an infinite chain of coupled harmonic oscillators with a Langevin thermostat at the origin. In the high frequency limit, we establish the reflection-transmission coefficients for the wave energy for the scattering of the thermostat. To our surprise, even though the thermostat fluctuations are time-dependent, the scattering does not couple wave energy at various frequencies.

A geometric viewpoint on generalized hydrodynamics

Generalized hydrodynamics (GHD) is a large-scale theory for the dynamics of many-body integrable systems. It consists of an infinite set of conservation laws for quasi-particles traveling with effective ("dressed") velocities that depend on the local state. We show that these equations can be recast into a geometric dynamical problem. They are conservation equations with state-independent quasi-particle velocities, in a space equipped with a family of metrics, parametrized by the quasi-particles' type and speed, that depend on the local state. In the classical hard rod or soliton gas picture, these metrics measure the free length of space as perceived by quasi-particles, in the quantum picture, they weigh space with the density of states available to them. Using this geometric construction, we find a general solution to the initial value problem of GHD, in terms of a set of integral equations where time appears explicitly. These integral equations are solvable by iteration and provide an extremely efficient solution algorithm for GHD.

Interacting and noninteracting integrable systems

The distinction between interacting and noninteracting integrable systems is proposed to be characterized by the Onsager matrix. It being zero is the defining property of a noninteracting integrable system. To support our view we discuss various classical and quantum integrable chains.

Drude Weight for the Lieb-Liniger Bose Gas

Based on the method of hydrodynamic projections we derive a concise formula for the Drude weight of the repulsive Lieb-Liniger $δ$-Bose gas. Our formula contains only quantities which are obtainable from the thermodynamic Bethe ansatz. The Drude weight is an infinite-dimensional matrix, or bilinear functional: it is bilinear in the currents, and each current may refer to a general linear combination of the conserved charges of the model. As a by-product we obtain the dynamical two-point correlation functions involving charge and current densities at small wavelengths and long times, and in addition the scaled covariance matrix of charge transfer. We expect that our formulas extend to other integrable quantum models.
