Chaos in Celestial CFT

Celestial holography proposes a duality between gravitational scattering in asymptotically flat space-time and a conformal field theory living on the celestial sphere. Its dictionary relates the infinite dimensional space-time symmetry group to Ward identities of the CFT. The spontaneous breaking of these asymptotic symmetries governs the dynamics of the soft sector in the CFT. Here we show that this sector encodes non-trivial backreaction effects that exhibit characteristics of maximal quantum chaos. A key element in the derivation is the identification of the Hilbert space of celestial CFT, defined through radial quantization, with that of a constantly accelerating Rindler observer. From the point of view of the bulk, Rindler particles exhibit Lyapunov behavior due to shockwave interactions that shift the observer horizon. From the point of view of the boundary, the superrotation Goldstone modes affect the relevant representations of the celestial Virasoro symmetry in a manner that induces Lyapunov behavior of out-of-time-ordered celestial correlators.

Towards a String Dual of SYK

We propose a paradigm for realizing the SYK model within string theory. Using the large $N$ matrix description of $c<1$ string theory, we show that the effective theory on a large number $Q$ of FZZT D-branes in $(p,1)$ minimal string theory takes the form of the disorder averaged SYK model with $J ψ^{p}$ interaction. The SYK fermions represent open strings between the FZZT branes and the ZZ branes that underly the matrix model. The continuum SYK dynamics arises upon taking the large $Q$ limit. We observe several qualitative and quantitative links between the SYK model and $(p,q)$ minimal string theory and propose that the two describe different phases of a single system. We comment on the dual string interpretation of double scaled SYK and on the relevance of our results to the recent discussion of the role of ensemble averaging in holography.

Wormholes in Quantum Mechanics

We introduce a geometric path integral definition of wormhole partition functions in a general class of 1D quantum systems obtained by quantizing a phase space. We compute the wormhole partition function in a semi-classical limit and in some simple examples. The partition function of the n-fold wormhole is found to be identical to the n-th Renyi entropy of a thermal mixed state of the doubled system. This mixed state incorporates three types of quantum statistical behavior: classically correlated, quantum entangled, and classically uncorrelated. We apply our prescription to 2D CFTs with Virasoro symmetry and recover the holographic dual formulation in terms of AdS3 gravity.

Deconstructing the Wormhole: Factorization, Entanglement and Decoherence

We study the role of ensemble averaging in holography by exploring the relation between the universal late time behavior of the spectral form factor and the second Renyi entropy of a thermal mixed state of the doubled system. Both quantities receive contributions from wormhole saddle-points: in the former case they lead to non-factorization while in the latter context they quantify decoherence due to the interaction with an environment. Our reasoning indicates that the space-time continuity responsible for non-factorization and space-time continuity through entanglement are in direct competition with each other. In an accompanying paper, we examine this dual relationship in a general class of 1D quantum systems with the help of a simple geometric path integral prescription.

HPS meets AMPS: How Soft Hair Dissolves the Firewall

We build on the observation by Hawking, Perry and Strominger that a global black hole space-time supports a large number of soft hair degrees of freedom to shed new light on the firewall argument by Almheiri, Marolf, Polchinski, and Sully. We propose that the soft hair Goldstone mode is encoded in a classical transition function that connects the asymptotic and near horizon region. The entropy carried by the soft hair is part of the black hole entropy and encoded in the outside geometry. We argue that the infalling observer automatically measures the classical value of the soft mode before reaching the horizon and that this measurement implements a code subspace projection that enables the reconstruction of interior operators. We use the soft hair dynamics to introduce an observer dependent notion of the firewall and show that for an infalling observer it recedes inwards into the black hole interior: the observer never encounters a firewall before reaching the singularity. Our results indicate that the HPS black hole soft hair plays an essential role in dissolving the AMPS firewall.

Electro-Magnetic Energy Extraction from Rotating Black Holes in AdS

Force-Free Electrodynamics for black holes in Anti de Sitter is considered. We present new, energy extracting solutions of Force-Free Electrodynamics in Anti de Sitter - Near Horizon Extremal Kerr and Super-Entropic Near Horizon Extremal Kerr geometries. The relevant equations of motion are derived from an action for force-free plasma surrounding spinning black holes with generic asymptotics. We consider the energy flux of electrodynamic fields in rotating frames to argue that the correct measure for energy extraction is the energy flux measured by a rotating observer in the near horizon region. We illustrate this procedure by application to near horizon solutions in Kerr, AdS-Kerr and BTZ.

JT gravity at finite cutoff

We compute the partition function of $2D$ Jackiw-Teitelboim (JT) gravity at finite cutoff in two ways: (i) via an exact evaluation of the Wheeler-DeWitt wave-functional in radial quantization and (ii) through a direct computation of the Euclidean path integral. Both methods deal with Dirichlet boundary conditions for the metric and the dilaton. In the first approach, the radial wavefunctionals are found by reducing the constraint equations to two first order functional derivative equations that can be solved exactly, including factor ordering. In the second approach we perform the path integral exactly when summing over surfaces with disk topology, to all orders in perturbation theory in the cutoff. Both results precisely match the recently derived partition function in the Schwarzian theory deformed by an operator analogous to the $T\bar{T}$ deformation in $2D$ CFTs. This equality can be seen as concrete evidence for the proposed holographic interpretation of the $T\bar{T}$ deformation as the movement of the AdS boundary to a finite radial distance in the bulk.

ER = EPR revisited: On the Entropy of an Einstein-Rosen Bridge

We propose a new link between entropy and area: an eternal black hole with an ER bridge with cross-section $A$ can carry a macroscopic amount of quantum information, or be in a mixed state, with entropy bounded by $S \leq A/4G_N$. We substantiate our proposal in the context of AdS3 and JT gravity, by using the Island prescription and replica wormhole method for computing the black hole entropy. We argue that the typical mixed state of a two sided black hole takes the form of an entangled `thermo-mixed double' state with only classical correlations between the two sides. Our result for the von Neumann entropy of a post-Page time two-sided black hole is smaller by a factor of two from previous answers. Our reasoning implies that black hole quantum information is topologically protected, similar to the information stored inside a topological quantum memory.

$T\bar{T}$ deformed CFT as a non-critical string

We present a new exact treatment of $T\bar{T}$ deformed 2D CFT in terms of the worldsheet theory of a non-critical string. The transverse dimensions of the non-critical string are represented by the undeformed CFT, while the two longitudinal light-cone directions are described by two scalar fields $X^+$ and $X^-$ with free field OPE's but with a modified stress tensor, arranged so that the total central charge adds up to 26. The relation between our $X^\pm$ field variables and 2D dilaton gravity is indicated. We compute the physical spectrum and the partition function and find a match with known results. We describe how to compute general correlation functions and present an integral expression for the three point function, which can be viewed as an exact formula for the OPE coefficients of the $T\bar{T}$ deformed theory. We comment on the relationship with other proposed definitions of local operators.

An exact quantization of Jackiw-Teitelboim gravity

We propose an exact quantization of two-dimensional Jackiw-Teitelboim (JT) gravity by formulating the JT gravity theory as a 2D gauge theory placed in the presence of a loop defect. The gauge group is a certain central extension of $PSL(2, \mathbb{R})$ by $\mathbb{R}$. We find that the exact partition function of our theory when placed on a Euclidean disk matches precisely the finite temperature partition function of the Schwarzian theory. We show that observables on both sides are also precisely matched: correlation functions of boundary-anchored Wilson lines in the bulk are given by those of bi-local operators in the Schwarzian theory. In the gravitational context, the Wilson lines are shown to be equivalent to the world-lines of massive particles in the metric formulation of JT gravity.

Expanding the Black Hole Interior: Partially Entangled Thermal States in SYK

We introduce a family of partially entangled thermal states in the SYK model that interpolates between the thermo-field double state and a pure (product) state. The states are prepared by a euclidean path integral describing the evolution over two euclidean time segments separated by a local scaling operator $\mathcal{O}$. We argue that the holographic dual of this class of states consists of two black holes with their interior regions connected via a domain wall, described by the worldline of a massive particle. We compute the size of the interior region and the entanglement entropy as a function of the scale dimension of $\mathcal{O}$ and the temperature of each black hole. We argue that the one-sided bulk reconstruction can access the interior region of the black hole.

Shockwave S-matrix from Schwarzian Quantum Mechanics

Schwarzian quantum mechanics describes the collective IR mode of the SYK model and captures key features of 2D black hole dynamics. Exact results for its correlation functions were obtained in JHEP {\bf 1708}, 136 (2017) [arXiv:1705.08408]. We compare these results with bulk gravity expectations. We find that the semi-classical limit of the out-of-time-order (OTO) four-point function exactly matches with the scattering amplitude obtained from the Dray-'t Hooft shockwave $\mathcal{S}$-matrix. We show that the two point function of heavy operators reduces to the semi-classical saddle-point of the Schwarzian action. We also explain a previously noted match between the OTO four point functions and 2D conformal blocks. Generalizations to higher-point functions, and applications, are discussed.

Entanglement Dynamics in 2D CFT with Boundary: Entropic origin of JT gravity and Schwarzian QM

We study the dynamics of the geometric entanglement entropy of a 2D CFT in the presence of a boundary. We show that this dynamics is governed by local equations of motion, that take the same form as 2D Jackiw-Teitelboim gravity coupled to the CFT. If we assume that the boundary has a small thickness $ε$ and constant boundary entropy, we derive that its location satisfies the equations of motion of Schwarzian quantum mechanics with coupling constant $C = {c ε}/{12π}$. We rederive this result via energy-momentum conservation.

Moving the CFT into the bulk with $T\bar T$

Recent work by Zamolodchikov and others has uncovered a solvable irrelevant deformation of general 2D CFTs, defined by turning on the dimension 4 operator $T \bar T$, the product of the left- and right-moving stress tensor. We propose that in the holographic dual, this deformation represents a geometric cutoff that removes the asymptotic region of AdS and places the QFT on a Dirichlet wall at finite radial distance $r = r_c$ in the bulk. As a quantitative check of the proposed duality, we compute the signal propagation speed, energy spectrum, and thermodynamic relations on both sides. In all cases, we obtain a precise match. We derive an exact RG flow equation for the metric dependence of the effective action of the $T \bar T$ deformed theory, and find that it coincides with the Hamilton-Jacobi equation that governs the radial evolution of the classical gravity action in AdS.

Towards a 2d QFT Analog of the SYK Model

We propose a 2D QFT generalization of the Sachdev-Ye-Kitaev model, which we argue preserves most of its features. The UV limit of the model is described by $N$ copies of a topological Ising CFT. The full interacting model exhibits conformal symmetry in the IR and an emergent pseudo-Goldstone mode that arises from broken reparametrization symmetry. We find that the effective action of the Goldstone mode matches with the 3D AdS gravity action, viewed as a functional of the boundary metric. We compute the spectral density and show that the leading deviation from conformal invariance looks like a $T \bar{T}$ deformation. We comment on the relation between the IR effective action and Liouville CFT.

A CFT Perspective on Gravitational Dressing and Bulk Locality

We revisit the construction of local bulk operators in AdS/CFT with special focus on gravitational dressing and its consequences for bulk locality. Specializing to 2+1-dimensions, we investigate these issues via the proposed identification between bulk operators and cross-cap boundary states. We obtain explicit expressions for correlation functions of bulk fields with boundary stress tensor insertions, and find that they are free of non-local branch cuts but do have non-local poles. We recover the HKLL recipe for restoring bulk locality for interacting fields as the outcome of a natural CFT crossing condition. We show that, in a suitable gauge, the cross-cap states solve the bulk wave equation for general background geometries, and satisfy a conformal Ward identity analogous to a soft graviton theorem, Virasoro symmetry, the large N conformal bootstrap and the uniformization theorem all play a key role in our derivations.

An Investigation of AdS$_2$ Backreaction and Holography

We investigate a dilaton gravity model in AdS$_2$ proposed by Almheiri and Polchinski and develop a 1d effective description in terms of a dynamical boundary time with a Schwarzian derivative action. We show that the effective model is equivalent to a 1d version of Liouville theory, and investigate its dynamics and symmetries via a standard canonical framework. We include the coupling to arbitrary conformal matter and analyze the effective action in the presence of possible sources. We compute commutators of local operators at large time separation, and match the result with the time shift due to a gravitational shockwave interaction. We study a black hole evaporation process and comment on the role of entropy in this model.

On CFT and Quantum Chaos

We make three observations that help clarify the relation between CFT and quantum chaos. We show that any 1+1-D system in which conformal symmetry is non-linearly realized exhibits two main characteristics of chaos: maximal Lyapunov behavior and a spectrum of Ruelle resonances. We use this insight to identify a lattice model for quantum chaos, built from parafermionic spin variables with an equation of motion given by a Y-system. Finally we point to a relation between the spectrum of Ruelle resonances of a CFT and the analytic properties of OPE coefficients between light and heavy operators. In our model, this spectrum agrees with the quasi-normal modes of the BTZ black hole.
