Orbital selectivity versus Pomeranchuk instability in the iron-chalcogenide superconductors: A two-loop renormalization group study

We perform a two-loop renormalization group (RG) analysis of a 2D effective multiband model, which is relevant for describing the low-energy properties of some iron-chalcogenide superconducting materials. Crucial ingredients in this analysis are the calculation of higher-order contributions in the RG scheme that go beyond the widely-used parquet approximation and the consequent inclusion of nontrivial self-energy effects of the model that yield an anisotropic renormalization of the quasiparticle weight in the system. The motivation of our work is the experimental discovery by Sprau et al. (2017) that orbitally-selective renormalization of the quasiparticle weight in the Hund's metal phase at moderate temperatures underpins the highly unusual gap in the superconducting phase of the FeSe compound at lower temperatures. One prediction we arrive here is that the underlying origin of nematicity in these systems may indeed come from orbital-selectivity, instead of a Pomeranchuk instability in the $d_{\pm}$ channel. This orbital selectivity is driven by the presence of stripe-type antiferromagnetic fluctuations in the model. Therefore, we argue that the present RG results may provide a scenario from a weak-to-moderate coupling perspective, in which the role of orbital selectivity to describe the physical properties of some iron-chalcogenide superconductors is emphasized.

Thermal and thermoelectric transport coefficients for a two-dimensional SDW metal with weak disorder: A memory matrix calculation

We calculate the thermal and thermoelectric transport coefficients for a two-dimensional spin-density-wave metal in the presence of weak disorder and under an external magnetic field using the Mori-Zwanzig memory matrix formalism. As a consequence, we obtain that although the Seebeck coefficient $S$ displays a relatively conventional linear dependence on the temperature of the system, the Nernst coefficient $ν$ exhibits a clear signature of bad-metallicity within the so-called strange metal regime described by the model. This result agrees qualitatively with experimental transport data obtained for many cuprate superconductors around optimal doping.

Calculation of the magnetotransport for a spin-density-wave quantum critical theory in the presence of weak disorder

We compute the Hall angle and the magnetoresistance of the spin-fermion model, which is a successful phenomenological theory to describe the physics of the cuprates and iron-based superconductors within a wide range of doping regimes. We investigate both the role of the spin-fermion interaction that couples the large-momentum antiferromagnetic fluctuations to the so-called "hot-spots" at the Fermi surface and also of an effective higher-order composite operator in the theory. The latter operator provides a scattering mechanism such that the momentum transfer for the fermions close to the Fermi surface can be small. We also include weak disorder that couples to both the bosonic order-parameter field and the fermionic degrees of freedom. Since the quasiparticle excitations were shown in recent works to be destroyed at the "hot-spots" in the low-energy limit of the model, we employ the Mori-Zwanzig memory-matrix approach that permits the evaluation of all transport coefficients without assuming well-defined Landau quasiparticles in the system. We then apply this transport theory to discuss universal metallic-state properties as a function of temperature and magnetic field of the cuprates from the perspective of their fermiology, which turn out to be in qualitative agreement with key experiments in those materials.

Memory matrix theory of the dc resistivity of a disordered antiferromagnetic metal with an effective composite operator

We perform the calculation of the dc resistivity as a function of temperature of the "strange-metal" state that emerges in the vicinity of a spin-density-wave phase transition in the presence of weak disorder. This scenario is relevant to the phenomenology of many important correlated materials, such as, e.g., the pnictides, the heavy-fermion compounds and the cuprates. To accomplish this task, we implement the memory-matrix approach that allows the calculation of the transport coefficients of the model beyond the quasiparticle paradigm. Our computation is also inspired by the $ε=3-d$ expansion in a hot-spot model embedded in $d$-space dimensions recently put forth by Sur and Lee [Phys. Rev. B 91, 125136 (2015)], in which they find a new low-energy non-Fermi liquid fixed point that is perturbatively accessible near three dimensions. As a consequence, we are able to establish here the temperature and doping dependence of the electrical resistivity at intermediate temperatures of a two-dimensional disordered antiferromagnetic metallic model with a composite operator that couples the order-parameter fluctuations to the entire Fermi surface. We argue that our present theory provides a good basis in order to unify the experimental transport data, e.g., in the cuprates and the pnictide superconductors, within a wide range of doping regimes.

Coexistence of $Θ_{II}$-loop-current order with checkerboard d-wave CDW/PDW order in a hot-spot model for cuprate superconductors

We investigate the strong influence of the $Θ_{II}$-loop-current order on both unidirectional and bidirectional d-wave charge-density-wave/pair-density-wave (CDW/PDW) composite orders along axial momenta $(\pm Q_0,0)$ and $(0,\pm Q_0)$ that emerge in an effective hot spot model departing from the three-band Emery model relevant to the phenomenology of the cuprate superconductors. This study is motivated by the compelling evidence that the $Θ_{II}$-loop-current order described by this model may explain groundbreaking experiments such as spin-polarized neutron scattering performed in these materials. Here, we demonstrate, within a saddle-point approximation, that the $Θ_{II}$-loop-current order clearly coexists with bidirectional (i.e. checkerboard) d-wave CDW and PDW orders along axial momenta, but is visibly detrimental to the unidirectional (i.e. stripe) case. This result has potentially far-reaching implications for the physics of the cuprates and agrees well with very recent x-ray experiments on YBCO that indicate that at higher dopings the CDW order has indeed a tendency to be bidirectional.

Strong competition between $Θ_{II}$-loop-current order and $d$-wave charge order along the diagonal direction in a two-dimensional hot spot model

We study the fate of the so-called $Θ_{II}$-loop-current order that breaks both time-reversal and parity symmetries in a two-dimensional hot spot model with antiferromagnetically mediated interactions, using Fermi surfaces relevant to the phenomenology of the cuprate superconductors. We start from a three-band Emery model describing the hopping of holes in the CuO$_{2}$ plane that includes two hopping parameters $t_{pp}$ and $t_{pd}$, local on-site Coulomb interactions $U_{d}$ and $U_{p}$ and nearest-neighbor $V_{pd}$ couplings between the fermions in the copper [Cu$(3d_{x^{2}-y^{2}})$] and oxygen [O$(2p_{x})$ and O$(2p_{y})$] orbitals. By focusing on the lowest-energy band, we proceed to decouple the local interaction $U_{d}$ of the Cu orbital in the spin channel using a Hubbard-Stratonovich transformation to arrive at the interacting part of the so-called spin-fermion model. We also decouple the nearest-neighbor interaction $V_{pd}$ to introduce the order parameter of the $Θ_{II}$-loop-current order. In this way, we are able to construct a consistent mean-field theory that describes the strong competition between the composite order parameter made of a quadrupole-density-wave and $d$-wave pairing fluctuations proposed in Efetov \emph{et al.} [Nat. Phys. \textbf{9}, 442 (2013)] with the $Θ_{II}$-loop-current order parameter that is argued to be relevant for explaining important aspects of the physics of the pseudogap phase displayed in the underdoped cuprates.

Renormalization group analysis of the pair-density-wave and charge order within the fermionic hot-spot model for cuprate superconductors

In light of the new experimental and theoretical important developments in high-$T_c$ superconductivity, we revisit the fermionic hot-spot model relevant to the phenomenology of the cuprates. We extend previous results by means of a complete two-loop order renormalization group (RG) framework. Here, we explicitly study the effect of the charge-density-wave (CDW) order parameter with a $d$-wave form factor with the experimentally observed modulation $(\pm Q_0,0)$ and $(0,\pm Q_0)$ at the infrared-stable nontrivial fixed point obtained previously for this model. Additionally, we proceed to investigate also the so-called pair-density-wave (PDW) order that was recently proposed in the literature as a possible candidate for the "hidden" order to describe the pseudogap phase observed in underdoped cuprates. We confirm that although the above two ordering tendencies are also found to be nearly degenerate both at one-loop and two-loop RG orders and linked by an emergent $SU(2)$ pseudospin symmetry, they turn out to be subleading for weaker couplings in the present model to antiferromagnetism, $d$-wave bond-density wave (BDW) order with modulation along Brillouin zone diagonals $(\pm Q_0,\pm Q_0)$, and $d$-wave singlet superconductivity (SSC). However, as we increase the strength of the initial coupling towards moderate values, we do capture a tendency for the entangled PDW/CDW order to become leading compared to BDW/SSC in the model, which suggests that the former composite order might be indeed a viable concept to describe some cuprate superconductors at high temperatures in the underdoped regime, as has been recently alluded to by many authors in the literature.

Controlled calculation of the thermal conductivity for a spinon Fermi surface coupled to a $U(1)$ gauge field

Motivated by recent transport measurements on the candidate spin-liquid phase of the organic triangular lattice insulator EtMe$_3$Sb[Pd(dmit)$_2$]$_2$, we perform a controlled calculation of the thermal conductivity at intermediate temperatures in a spin liquid system where a spinon Fermi surface is coupled to a $U(1)$ gauge field. The present computation builds upon the double expansion approach developed by Mross \emph{et al.} [Phys. Rev. B \textbf{82}, 045121 (2010)] for small $ε=z_b -2$ (where $z_b$ is the dynamical critical exponent of the gauge field) and large number of fermionic species $N$. Using the so-called memory matrix formalism that most crucially does not assume the existence of well-defined quasiparticles at low energies in the system, we calculate the temperature dependence of the thermal conductivity $κ$ of this model due to non-critical Umklapp scattering of the spinons for a finite $N$ and small $ε$. Then we discuss the physical implications of such theoretical result in connection with the experimental data available in the literature.

Evidence of a short-range incommensurate $d$-wave charge order from a fermionic two-loop renormalization group calculation of a 2D model with hot spots

The two-loop renormalization group (RG) calculation is considerably extended here for the two-dimensional (2D) fermionic effective field theory model, which includes only the so-called "hot spots" that are connected by the spin-density-wave (SDW) ordering wavevector on a Fermi surface generated by the 2D $t-t'$ Hubbard model at low hole doping. We compute the Callan-Symanzik RG equation up to two loops describing the flow of the single-particle Green's function, the corresponding spectral function, the Fermi velocity, and some of the most important order-parameter susceptibilities in the model at lower energies. As a result, we establish that -- in addition to clearly dominant SDW correlations -- an approximate (pseudospin) symmetry relating a short-range \emph{incommensurate} $d$-wave charge order to the $d$-wave superconducting order indeed emerges at lower energy scales, which is in agreement with recent works available in the literature addressing the 2D spin-fermion model. We derive implications of this possible electronic phase in the ongoing attempt to describe the phenomenology of the pseudogap regime in underdoped cuprates.

Breakdown of Fermi liquid behavior near the hot spots in a two-dimensional model: A two-loop renormalization group analysis

Motivated by a recent experimental observation of a nodal liquid on both single crystals and thin films of Bi$_2$Sr$_2$CaCu$_2$O$_{8+δ}$ by Chatterjee \emph{et al.} [Nature Physics \textbf{6}, 99 (2010)], we perform a field-theoretical renormalization group (RG) analysis of a two-dimensional model consisting of eight points located near the "hot spots" on the Fermi surface which are directly connected by spin density wave ordering wave vector. We derive RG equations up to two-loop order describing the flow of renormalized couplings, quasiparticle weight, several order-parameter response functions, and uniform spin and charge susceptibilities of the model. We find that while the order-parameter susceptibilities investigated here become non-divergent at two loops, the quasiparticle weight vanishes in the low-energy limit, indicating a breakdown of Fermi liquid behavior at this RG level. Moreover, both uniform spin and charge susceptibilities become suppressed in the scaling limit which indicate gap openings in both spin and charge excitation spectra of the model.

A functional generalization of the field-theoretical renormalization group approach for the single-impurity Anderson model

We apply a functional implementation of the field-theoretical renormalization group (RG) method up to two loops to the single-impurity Anderson model. To achieve this, we follow a RG strategy similar to that proposed by Vojta \emph{et al.} [Phys. Rev. Lett. \textbf{85}, 4940 (2000)], which consists of defining a soft ultraviolet regulator in the space of Matsubara frequencies for the renormalized Green's function. Then we proceed to derive analytically and solve numerically integro-differential flow equations for the effective couplings and the quasiparticle weight of the present model, which fully treat the interplay of particle-particle and particle-hole parquet diagrams and the effect of the two-loop self-energy feedback into them. We show that our results correctly reproduce accurate numerical renormalization group data for weak to slightly moderate interactions. These results are in excellent agreement with other functional Wilsonian RG works available in the literature. Since the field-theoretical RG method turns out to be easier to implement at higher loops than the Wilsonian approach, higher-order calculations within the present approach could improve further the results for this model at stronger couplings. We argue that the present RG scheme could thus offer a possible alternative to other functional RG methods to describe electronic correlations within this model.

Complete renormalization group calculation up to two-loop order of an effective two-band model for iron-based superconductors

We perform a renormalization group (RG) study up to two-loop order of an effective low-energy two-band model to describe some of the recently discovered iron-based superconductors. Our starting point is the itinerant electronic model proposed by Chubukov \emph{et al.} [Phys. Rev. B \textbf{78}, 134512 (2008)], which displays two small, almost nested Fermi pockets with one hole pocket centered at $(0,0)$ and one electron pocket centered at $\mathbf{Q} = (π,π)$ in the folded Brillouin zone. We then proceed to implement a complete two-loop RG calculation for this model of four-point vertex corrections, quasiparticle weight and several order-parameter susceptibilities in order to evaluate the robustness of one-loop RG results available in the literature with respect to including self-energy effects and higher-order quantum fluctuations.

Functional renormalization group approach to the Anderson impurity model

We develop a functional renormalization group approach which describes the low-energy single-particle properties of the Anderson impurity model up to intermediate on-site interactions $U \lesssim 15 Δ$, where $Δ$ is the hybridization in the wide-band limit. Our method is based on a generalization of a method proposed by Schütz, Bartosch and Kopietz [Phys. Rev. B 72, 035107 (2005)], using two independent Hubbard-Stratonovich fields associated with transverse and longitudinal spin fluctuations. Although we do not reproduce the exponentially small Kondo scale in the limit $U \to \infty$, the spin fluctuations included in our approach remove the unphysical Stoner instability predicted by mean-field theory for $U > πΔ$. We discuss different decoupling schemes and show that a decoupling which manifestly respects the spin-rotational invariance of the problem gives rise to the lowest quasiparticle weight. To obtain a closed flow equation for the fermionic self-energy we also propose a new truncation scheme of the functional renormalization group flow equations using Dyson-Schwinger equations to express bosonic vertex functions in terms of fermionic ones.

Breakdown of the Fermi-liquid regime in the 2D Hubbard model from a two-loop field-theoretical renormalization group approach

We analyze the particle-hole symmetric two-dimensional Hubbard model on a square lattice starting from weak-to-moderate couplings by means of the field-theoretical renormalization group (RG) approach up to two-loop order. This method is essential in order to evaluate the effect of the momentum-resolved anomalous dimension $η(\textbf{p})$ which arises in the normal phase of this model on the corresponding low-energy single-particle excitations. As a result, we find important indications pointing to the existence of a non-Fermi liquid (NFL) regime at temperature $T\to 0$ displaying a truncated Fermi surface (FS) for a doping range exactly in between the well-known antiferromagnetic insulating and the $d_{x^2-y^2}$-wave singlet superconducting phases. This NFL evolves as a function of doping into a correlated metal with a large FS before the $d_{x^2-y^2}$-wave pairing susceptibility finally produces the dominant instability in the low-energy limit.

Renormalization group calculation of the uniform susceptibilities in low-dimensional systems

We analyze the one-dimensional (1D) and the two-dimensional (2D) repulsive Hubbard models (HM) for densities slightly away from half-filling through the behavior of two central quantities of a system: the uniform charge and spin susceptibilities. We point out that a consistent renormalization group treatment of them can only be achieved within a two-loop approach or beyond. In the 1D HM, we show that this scheme reproduces correctly the metallic behavior given by the well-known Luttinger liquid fixed-point result. Then, we use the same approach to deal with the more complicated 2D HM. In this case, we are able to show that both uniform susceptibilities become suppressed for moderate interaction parameters as one take the system towards the Fermi surface. Therefore, this result adds further support to the interpretation that those systems are in fact insulating spin liquids. Later, we perform the same calculations in 2D using the conventional random phase approximation, and establish clearly a comparison between the two schemes.

Insulating spin liquid in the lightly doped two-dimensional Hubbard model

We calculate the charge compressibility and uniform spin susceptibility for the two-dimensional (2D) Hubbard model slightly away from half-filling within a two-loop renormalization group scheme. We find numerically that both those quantities flow to zero as we increase the initial interaction strength from weak to intermediate couplings. This result implies gap openings in both charge and spin excitation spectra for the latter interaction regime. When this occurs, the ground state of the lightly doped 2D Hubbard model may be interpreted as an insulating spin liquid as opposed to a Mott insulating state.

Short-Range Order in a Flat Two-Dimensional Fermi Surface

We present the two-loop renormalization group (RG) calculations of all the susceptibilities associated with the two-dimensional flat Fermi surface with rounded corners (FS). Our approach follows our fermionic field theory RG method presented in detail earlier on. In one loop order our calculation reproduce the results obtained previously by other RG schemes. All susceptibilities diverge at some energy scale and the antiferromagnetic SDW correlations produce indeed the dominant instability in the physical system. In contrast, in two-loop order, for a given initial set of values of coupling constant regime only one of the susceptibilities at a time seems to diverge.
