Wigner molecules in quantum dots

We perform unrestricted Hartree-Fock (HF) calculations for electrons in a parabolic quantum dot at zero magnetic field. The crossover from Fermi liquid to Wigner molecule behavior is studied for up to eight electrons and various spin components $S_z$. We compare the results with numerically exact path-integral Monte Carlo simulations and earlier HF studies. Even in the strongly correlated regime the symmetry breaking HF solutions provide accurate estimates for the energies and describe the one-particle densities qualitatively. However, the HF approximation favors the formation of a Wigner molecule and produces azimuthal modulations of the density for even numbers of electrons in one spatial shell.

Conductance of the Single Electron Transistor for Arbitrary Tunneling Strength

We study the temperature and gate voltage dependence of the conductance of the single electron transistor focusing on highly conducting devices. Electron tunneling is treated nonperturbatively by means of path integral Monte Carlo techniques and the conductance is determined from the Kubo formula. A regularized singular value decomposition scheme is employed to calculate the conductance from imaginary time simulation data. Our findings are shown to bridge between available analytical results in the semiclassical and perturbative limits and are found to explain recent experimental results in a regime not accessible by earlier methods.

Semiclassical Dynamics of the Jaynes-Cummings Model

The semiclassical approximation of coherent state path integrals is employed to study the dynamics of the Jaynes-Cummings model. Decomposing the Hilbert space into subspaces of given excitation quanta above the ground state, the semiclassical propagator is shown to describe the exact quantum dynamics of the model. We also present a semiclassical approximation that does not exploit the special properties of the Jaynes-Cummings Hamiltonian and can be extended to more general situations. In this approach the contribution of the dominant semiclassical paths and the relevant fluctuations about them are evaluated. This theory leads to an accurate description of spontaneous emission going beyond the usual classical field approximation.

Semiclassical time evolution of the density matrix and tunneling

The time dependent density matrix of a system with potential barrier is studied using path integrals. The characterization of the initial state, which is assumed to be restricted to one side of the barrier, and the time evolution of the density matrix lead to a three-fold path integral which is evaluated in the semiclassical limit. The semiclassical trajectories are found to move in the complex coordinate plane and barrier penetration only arises due to fluctuations. Both the form of the semiclassical paths and the relevant fluctuations change significantly as a function of temperature. The semiclassical analysis leads to a detailed picture of barrier penetration in the real time domain and the changeover from thermal activation to quantum tunneling. Deep tunneling is associated with quasi-zero modes in the fluctuation spectrum about the semiclassical orbits in the long time limit. The connection between this real time description of tunneling and the standard imaginary time instanton approach is established. Specific results are given for a double well potential and an Eckart barrier.

Single Electron Tunneling at Large Conductance: The Semiclassical Approach

We study the linear conductance of single electron devices showing Coulomb blockade phenomena. Our approach is based on a formally exact path integral representation describing electron tunneling nonperturbatively. The electromagnetic environment of the device is treated in terms of the Caldeira-Leggett model. We obtain the linear conductance from the Kubo formula leading to a formally exact expression which is evaluated in the semiclassical limit. Specifically we consider three models. First, the influence of an electromagnetic environment of arbitrary impedance on a single tunnel junction is studied focusing on the limits of large tunneling conductance and high to moderately low temperatures. The predictions are compared with recent experimental data. Second, the conductance of an array of N tunnel junctions is determined in dependence on the length N of the array and the environmental impedance. Finally, we consider a single electron transistor and compare our results for large tunneling conductance with experimental findings.

Centrifugal terms in the WKB approximation and semiclassical quantization of hydrogen

A systematic semiclassical expansion of the hydrogen problem about the classical Kepler problem is shown to yield remarkably accurate results. Ad hoc changes of the centrifugal term, such as the standard Langer modification where the factor l(l+1) is replaced by (l+1/2)^2, are avoided. The semiclassical energy levels are shown to be exact to first order in $\hbar$ with all higher order contributions vanishing. The wave functions and dipole matrix elements are also discussed.

Semiclassical dynamics of a spin-1/2 in an arbitrary magnetic field

The spin coherent state path integral describing the dynamics of a spin-1/2-system in a magnetic field of arbitrary time-dependence is considered. Defining the path integral as the limit of a Wiener regularized expression, the semiclassical approximation leads to a continuous minimal action path with jumps at the endpoints. The resulting semiclassical propagator is shown to coincide with the exact quantum mechanical propagator. A non-linear transformation of the angle variables allows for a determination of the semiclassical path and the jumps without solving a boundary-value problem. The semiclassical spin dynamics is thus readily amenable to numerical methods.

Effect of zero point phase fluctuations on Josephson tunneling

In the presence of phase fluctuations the dc Josephson effect is modified and the supercurrent at zero voltage is replaced by a peak at small but finite voltages. It is shown that at zero temperature this peak is determined by two complementary expansions of finite radius of convergence. The leading order expressions are related to results known from the regimes of Coulomb blockade and of macroscopic quantum tunneling. The peak positions and the suppression of the critical current by quantum fluctuations are discussed.

Frequency Dependent Conductance of a Tunnel Junction in the Semiclassical Limit

The linear conductance of the a small metallic tunnel junction embedded in an electromagnetic environment of arbitrary impedance is determined in the semiclassical limit. Electron tunneling is treated beyond the orthodox theory of Coulomb blockade phenomena by means of a nonperturbative path integral approach. The frequency dependent conductance is obtained from Kubo's formula. The theoretical predictions are valid for high temperatures and/or for large tunneling conductance and are found to explain recent experimental data.

Coulomb Charging Effects for Finite Channel Number

We consider quantum fluctuations of the charge on a small metallic grain caused by virtual electron tunneling to a nearby electrode. The average electron number and the effective charging energy are determined by means of perturbation theory in the tunneling Hamiltonian. In particular we discuss the dependence of charging effects on the number N of tunneling channels. Earlier results for N>>1 are found to be approached rather rapidly with increasing N.

Mesoscopic Josephson Effect

In the classical Josephson effect the phase difference across the junction is well defined, and the supercurrent is reduced only weakly by phase diffusion. For mesoscopic junctions with small capacitance the phase undergoes large quantum fluctuations, and the current is also decreased by Coulomb blockade effects. We discuss the behavior of the current-voltage characteristics in a large range of parameters comprising the phase diffusion regime with coherent Josephson current as well as the supercurrent peak due to incoherent Cooper pair tunneling in the Coulomb blockade regime.

Force, charge, and conductance of an ideal metallic nanowire

The conducting and mechanical properties of a metallic nanowire formed at the junction between two macroscopic metallic electrodes are investigated. Both two- and three-dimensional wires with a W(ide)-N(arrow)-W(ide) geometry are modelled in the free-electron approximation with hard-wall boundary conditions. Tunneling and quantum-size effects are treated exactly using the scattering matrix formalism. Oscillations of order E_F/lambda_F in the tensile force are found when the wire is stretched to the breaking point, which are synchronized with quantized jumps in the conductance. The force and conductance are shown to be essentially independent of the width of the wide sections (electrodes). The exact results are compared with an adiabatic approximation; the later is found to overestimate the effects of tunneling, but still gives qualitatively reasonable results for nanowires of length L>>lambda_F, even for this abrupt geometry. In addition to the force and conductance, the net charge of the nanowire is calculated and the effects of screening are included within linear response theory. Mesoscopic charge fluctuations of order e are predicted which are strongly correlated with the mesoscopic force fluctuations. The local density of states at the Fermi energy exhibits nontrivial behavior which is correlated with fine structure in the force and conductance, showing the importance of treating the whole wire as a mesoscopic system rather than treating only the narrow part.

Applying voltage sources to a Luttinger liquid with arbitrary transmission

The Landauer approach to transport in mesoscopic conductors has been generalized to allow for strong electronic correlations in a single-channel quantum wire. We describe in detail how to account for external voltage sources in adiabatic contact with a quantum wire containing a backscatterer of arbitrary strength. Assuming that the quantum wire is in the Luttinger liquid state, voltage sources lead to radiative boundary conditions applied to the displacement field employed in the bosonization scheme. We present the exact solution of the transport problem for arbitrary backscattering strength at the special Coulomb interaction parameter g=1/2.

Phase diffusion and charging effects in Josephson junctions

The supercurrent of a Josephson junction is reduced by phase diffusion. For ultrasmall capacitance junctions the current may be further decreased by Coulomb blockade effects. We calculate the Cooper pair current by means of time-dependent perturbation theory to all orders in the Josephson coupling energy and obtain the current-voltage characteristic in closed form in a range of parameters of experimental interest. The results comprehend phase diffusion of the coherent Josephson current in the classical regime as well as the supercurrent peak due to incoherent Cooper pair tunneling in the strong Coulomb blockade regime.

Semiclassical theory of vibrational energy relaxation

A theory of vibrational energy relaxation based on a semiclassical treatment of the quantum master equation is presented. Using new results on the semiclassical expansion of dipole matrix elements, we show that in the classical limit the master equation reduces to the Zwanzig energy diffusion equation. The leading quantum corrections are determined and discussed for the harmonic and Morse potentials.

Electroneutrality and the Friedel sum rule in a Luttinger liquid

Screening in one-dimensional metals is studied for arbitrary electron-electron interactions. It is shown that for finite-range interactions (Luttinger liquid) electroneutrality is violated. This apparent inconsistency can be traced to the presence of external screening gates responsible for the effectively short-ranged Coulomb interactions. We also draw attention to the breakdown of linear screening for wavevectors close to 2 K_f.
