Quantum Sign Permutation Polytopes

Convex polytopes are convex hulls of point sets in the $n$-dimensional space $\E^n$ that generalize 2-dimensional convex polygons and 3-dimensional convex polyhedra. We concentrate on the class of $n$-dimensional polytopes in $\E^n$ called sign permutation polytopes. We characterize sign permutation polytopes before relating their construction to constructions over the space of quantum density matrices. Finally, we consider the problem of state identification and show how sign permutation polytopes may be useful in addressing issues of robustness.

Optimal super dense coding over noisy quantum channels

We investigate super dense coding in the presence of noise, i.e. the subsystems of the entangled resource state have to pass a noisy unital quantum channel between the sender and the receiver. We discuss explicitly the case of Pauli channels in arbitrary dimension and derive the super dense coding capacity (i.e. the optimal information transfer) for some given resource states. We also study the case that the initial resource state can be chosen: for the qubit depolarizing channel we show that there is a threshold value for the noise parameter, below which the super dense coding protocol is optimized by a maximally entangled initial state, while above the threshold the dense coding capacity for any entangled initial state is smaller than the one for a product state. Finally, we provide an example of a noisy channel where non-unitary pre-processing increases the super dense coding capacity, as compared to only unitary encoding.

Multipartite entanglement detection via structure factors

We establish a relation between entanglement of a many-body system and its diffractive properties, where the link is given by structure factors. Based on these, we provide a general analytical construction of multi-qubit entanglement witnesses. The proposed witnesses contain two-point correlations. They could be either measured in a scattering experiment or via local measurements, depending on the underlying physical system. For some explicit examples of witnesses we analyze the properties of the states that are detected by them. We further study the robustness of these witnesses with respect to noise.

On Global Effects Caused by Locally Noneffective Unitary Operations

Given a bipartite quantum state rho with subsystems A and B of arbitrary dimensions, we study the entanglement detecting capabilities of locally noneffective, or cyclic, unitary operations [L. B. Fu, Europhys. Lett., vol. 75, pp. 1-7, 2006]. Local cyclic unitaries have the special property that they leave their target subsystem invariant. We investigate the distance between rho and the global state after local application of such unitaries as a possible indicator of entanglement. To this end, we derive and discuss closed formulae for the maximal such distance achievable for three cases of interest: (pseudo)pure quantum states, Werner states, and two-qubit states. What makes this criterion interesting, as we show here, is that it surprisingly displays behavior similar to recent anomalies observed for non-locality measures in higher dimensions, as well as demonstrates an equivalence to the CHSH inequality for certain classes of two-qubit states. Yet, despite these similarities, the criterion is not itself a non-locality measure. We also consider entanglement detection in bound entangled states.

Entanglement witnesses and a loophole problem

We consider a possible detector-efficiency loophole in experiments that detect entanglement via the local measurement of witness operators. Here, only local properties of the detectors are known. We derive a general threshold for the detector efficiencies which guarantees that a negative expectation value of a witness is due to entanglement, rather than to erroneous detectors. This threshold depends on the local decomposition of the witness and its measured expectation value. For two-qubit witnesses we find the local operator decomposition that is optimal with respect to closing the loophole.

Purifying and Reversible Physical Processes

Starting from the observation that reversible processes cannot increase the purity of any input state, we study deterministic physical processes, which map a set of states to a set of pure states. Such a process must map any state to the same pure output, if purity is demanded for the input set of all states. But otherwise, when the input set is restricted, it is possible to find non-trivial purifying processes. For the most restricted case of only two input states, we completely characterize the output of any such map. We furthermore consider maps, which combine the property of purity and reversibility on a set of states, and we derive necessary and sufficient conditions on sets, which permit such processes.

Finite key analysis for symmetric attacks in quantum key distribution

We introduce a constructive method to calculate the achievable secret key rate for a generic class of quantum key distribution protocols, when only a finite number n of signals is given. Our approach is applicable to all scenarios in which the quantum state shared by Alice and Bob is known. In particular, we consider the six state protocol with symmetric eavesdropping attacks, and show that for a small number of signals, i.e. below the order of 10^4, the finite key rate differs significantly from the asymptotic value for n approaching infinity. However, for larger n, a good approximation of the asymptotic value is found. We also study secret key rates for protocols using higher-dimensional quantum systems.
