Tunable front interaction and localization of periodically forced waves

In systems that exhibit a bistability between nonlinear traveling waves and the basic state, pairs of fronts connecting these two states can form localized wave pulses whose stability depends on the interaction between the fronts. We investigate the localization of waves within the framework of coupled Ginzburg-Landau equations describing the traveling-wave amplitudes. We find that the introduction of resonant temporal forcing results in a new, tunable mechanism for stabilizing such wave pulses. In contrast to other localization mechanisms, the temporal forcing can achieve localization by a repulsive as well as by an attractive interaction between the fronts. Systems for which the results are expected to be relevant include binary-mixture convection and electroconvection in nematic liquid crystals.

Rotating Convection in an Anisotropic System

We study the stability of patterns arising in rotating convection in weakly anisotropic systems using a modified Swift-Hohenberg equation. The anisotropy, either an endogenous characteristic of the system or induced by external forcing, can stabilize periodic rolls in the Küppers-Lortz chaotic regime. For the particular case of rotating convection with time-modulated rotation where recently, in experiment, chiral patterns have been observed in otherwise Küppers-Lortz-unstable regimes, we show how the underlying base-flow breaks the isotropy, thereby affecting the linear growth-rate of convection rolls in such a way as to stabilize spirals and targets. Throughout we compare analytical results to numerical simulations of the Swift-Hohenberg equation.

Mean flow in hexagonal convection: stability and nonlinear dynamics

Weakly nonlinear hexagon convection patterns coupled to mean flow are investigated within the framework of coupled Ginzburg-Landau equations. The equations are in particular relevant for non-Boussinesq Rayleigh-Bénard convection at low Prandtl numbers. The mean flow is found to (1) affect only one of the two long-wave phase modes of the hexagons and (2) suppress the mixing between the two phase modes. As a consequence, for small Prandtl numbers the transverse and the longitudinal phase instability occur in sufficiently distinct parameter regimes that they can be studied separately. Through the formation of penta-hepta defects, they lead to different types of transient disordered states. The results for the dynamics of the penta-hepta defects shed light on the persistence of grain boundaries in such disordered states.

A Non-Equilibrium Defect-Unbinding Transition: Defect Trajectories and Loop Statistics

In a Ginzburg-Landau model for parametrically driven waves a transition between a state of ordered and one of disordered spatio-temporal defect chaos is found. To characterize the two different chaotic states and to get insight into the break-down of the order, the trajectories of the defects are tracked in detail. Since the defects are always created and annihilated in pairs the trajectories form loops in space time. The probability distribution functions for the size of the loops and the number of defects involved in them undergo a transition from exponential decay in the ordered regime to a power-law decay in the disordered regime. These power laws are also found in a simple lattice model of randomly created defect pairs that diffuse and annihilate upon collision.

Sideband Instabilities and Defects of Quasipatterns

Quasipatterns have been found in dissipative systems ranging from Faraday waves in vertically vibrated fluid layers to nonlinear optics. We describe the dynamics of octagonal, decagonal and dodecagonal quasipatterns by means of coupled Ginzburg-Landau equations and study their stability to sideband perturbations analytically using long-wave equations as well as by direct numerical simulation. Of particular interest is the influence of the phason modes, which are associated with the quasiperiodicity, on the stability of the patterns. In the dodecagonal case, in contrast to the octagonal and the decagonal case, the phase modes and the phason modes decouple and there are parameter regimes in which the quasipattern first becomes unstable with respect to phason modes rather than phase modes. We also discuss the different types of defects that can arise in each kind of quasipattern as well as their dynamics and interactions. Particularly interesting is the decagonal quasipattern, which allows two different types of defects. Their mutual interaction can be extremely weak even at small distances.

Destabilization and Localization of Traveling Waves by an Advected Field

{We study a model of small-amplitude traveling waves arising in a supercritical Hopf-bifurcation, that are coupled to a slowly varying, real field. The field is advected by the waves and, in turn, affects their stability via a coupling to the growth rate. In the absence of dispersion we identify two distinct shortwave instabilities. One instability induces a phase slip of the waves and a corresponding reduction of the winding number, while the other leads to a modulated wave structure. The bifurcation to modulated waves can be either forward or backward, in the latter case permitting the existence of localized, traveling pulses which are bistable with the basic, conductive state.

Stability of Oscillating Hexagons in Rotating Convection

Breaking the chiral symmetry, rotation induces a secondary Hopf bifurcation in weakly nonlinear hexagon patterns which gives rise to oscillating hexagons. We study the stability of the oscillating hexagons using three coupled Ginzburg-Landau equations. Close to the bifurcation point we derive reduced equations for the amplitude of the oscillation, coupled to the phase of the underlying hexagons. Within these equation we identify two types of long-wave instabilities and study the ensuing dynamics using numerical simulations of the three coupled Ginzburg-Landau equations.

Defect Chaos of Oscillating Hexagons in Rotating Convection

Using coupled Ginzburg-Landau equations, the dynamics of hexagonal patterns with broken chiral symmetry are investigated, as they appear in rotating non-Boussinesq or surface-tension-driven convection. We find that close to the secondary Hopf bifurcation to oscillating hexagons the dynamics are well described by a single complex Ginzburg-Landau equation (CGLE) coupled to the phases of the hexagonal pattern. At the bandcenter these equations reduce to the usual CGLE and the system exhibits defect chaos. Away from the bandcenter a transition to a frozen vortex state is found.

Instabilities and Spatio-Temporal Chaos in Hexagon Patterns with Rotation

The dynamics of hexagon patterns in rotating systems are investigated within the framework of modified Swift-Hohenberg equations that can be considered as simple models for rotating convection with broken up-down symmetry, e.g. non-Boussinesq Rayleigh-Benard or Marangoni convection. In the weakly nonlinear regime a linear stability analysis of the hexagons reveals long- and short-wave instabilities, which can be steady or oscillatory. The oscillatory short-wave instabilities can lead to stable hexagon patterns that are periodically modulated in space and time, or to a state of spatio-temporal chaos with a Fourier spectrum that precesses on average in time. The chaotic state can exhibit bistability with the steady hexagon pattern. There exist regimes in which the steady hexagon patterns are unstable at all wavenumbers.

Instabilities of Hexagonal Patterns with Broken Chiral Symmetry

Three coupled Ginzburg-Landau equations for hexagonal patterns with broken chiral symmetry are investigated. They are relevant for the dynamics close to onset of rotating non-Boussinesq or surface-tension-driven convection. Steady and oscillatory, long- and short-wave instabilities of the hexagons are found. For the long-wave behavior coupled phase equations are derived. Numerical simulations of the Ginzburg-Landau equations indicate bistability between spatio-temporally chaotic patterns and stable steady hexagons. The chaotic state can, however, not be described properly with the Ginzburg-Landau equations.

The Stability of Standing Waves

We determine the modulational stability of standing waves with small group velocity in quasi-onedimensional systems slightly above the threshold of a supercritical Hopf bifurcation. The stability limits are given by two different long-wavelength destabilisation mechanisms and generically also a short-wavelength destabilisation. The Eckhaus parabola is shifted off-center and can be convex from below or above. For nonzero group velocity the Newell criterion, which near the cross-over from standing to traveling waves becomes a rather weak condition, does not determine the destabilisation of all standing waves in one dimension. The cross-over to the non-local equations that are asymptotically valid near threshold is discussed in detail. Close to the transition from standing to traveling waves complex dynamics can arise due to the competition of counter-propagating waves and the wavenumber selection by sources. Our results yield necessary conditions for the stability of traveling rectangles in quasi-twodimensional systems with axial anisotropy and form a starting point for understanding the spatio-temporal chaos of traveling oblique rolls observed in electroconvection of nematic liquid crystals.

A Continuum Description of Vibrated Sand

The motion of a thin layer of granular material on a plate undergoing sinusoidal vibrations is considered. We develop equations of motion for the local thickness and the horizontal velocity of the layer. The driving comes from the violent impact of the grains on the plate. A linear stability theory reveals that the waves are excited non-resonantly, in contrast to the usual Faraday waves in liquids. Together with the experimentally observed continuum scaling, the model suggests a close connection between the neutral curve and the dispersion relation of the waves, which agrees quite well with experiments. For strong hysteresis we find localized oscillon solutions.

Localized Structures in Pattern-Forming Systems

A number of mechanisms that lead to the confinement of patterns to a small part of a translationally symmetric pattern-forming system are reviewed: nonadiabatic locking of fronts, global coupling and conservation laws, dispersion, and coupling to additional slow modes $via$ gradients. Various connections with experimental results are made.

Oscillon-type Structures and Their Interaction in a Swift-Hohenberg Model

Motivated by the observation of localized circular excitations (`oscillons') in vertically vibrated granular layers (P.B. Umbanhowar, F. Melo and H.L. Swinney, Nature 382 (1996) 793), we numerically investigate an extension of a Swift-Hohenberg model that exhibits a subcritical transition to square patterns. For sufficient subcriticality, stable oscillon structures are found. The localization mechanism is quite general and is due to non-adiabatic effects. Bound structures of oscillons of equal and opposite polarity are found with bound states of like polarity being less robust. Much of the phenomena are consistent with the experimental observations and suggest that oscillons are not specific to patterns in granular media or to parametrically driven systems. Experimental tests are suggested that would determine whether this minimal framework is sufficient to describe the phenomena.

Localization of Waves without Bistability: Worms in Nematic Electroconvection

A general localization mechanism for waves in dissipative systems is identified that does not require the bistability of the basic state and the nonlinear plane-wave state. The mechanism explains the two-dimensional localized wave structures (`worms') that recently have been observed in experiments on electroconvection in nematic liquid crystals where the transition to extended waves is supercritical. The mechanism accounts for the propagation direction of the worms and certain aspects of their interaction. The dynamics of the localized waves can be steady or irregular.

Double Phase Slips and Bound Defect Pairs in Parametrically Driven Waves

Spatio-temporal chaos in parametrically driven waves is investigated in one and two dimensions using numerical simulations of Ginzburg-Landau equations. A regime is identified in which in one dimension the dynamics are due to double phase slips. In very small systems they are found to arise through a Hopf bifurcation off a mixed mode. In large systems they can lead to a state of localized spatio-temporal chaos, which can be understood within the framework of phase dynamics. In two dimensions the double phase slips are replaced by bound defect pairs. Our simulations indicate the possibility of an unbinding transition of these pairs, which is associated with a transition from ordered to disordered defect chaos.

Ordered and Disordered Defect Chaos

Defect-chaos is studied numerically in coupled Ginzburg-Landau equations for parametrically driven waves. The motion of the defects is traced in detail yielding their life-times, annihilation partners, and distances traveled. In a regime in which in the one-dimensional case the chaotic dynamics is due to double phase slips, the two-dimensional system exhibits a strongly ordered stripe pattern. When the parity-breaking instability to traveling waves is approached this order vanishes and the correlation function decays rapidly. In the ordered regime the defects have a typical life-time, whereas in the disordered regime the life-time distribution is exponential. The probability of large defect loops is substantially larger in the disordered regime.

Holes and chaotic pulses of traveling waves coupled to a long-wave mode

Localized traveling-wave pulses and holes, i.e. localized regions of vanishing wave amplitude, are investigated in a real Ginzburg-Landau equation coupled to a long-wave mode. In certain parameter regimes the pulses exhibit a Hopf bifurcation which leads to a breathing motion. Subsequently the oscillations undergo period-doubling bifurcations and become chaotic.
