Chiral Graviton Modes in Fermionic Fractional Chern Insulators

Chiral graviton modes are hallmark collective excitations of Fractional Quantum Hall (FQH) liquids. However, their existence on the lattice, where continuum symmetries that protect them from decay are lost, is still an open and urgent question, especially considering the recent advances in the realization of Fractional Chern Insulators (FCI) in transition metal dichalcogenides and rhombohedral pentalayer graphene. Here we present a comprehensive theoretical and numerical study of graviton-modes in fermionic FCI, and thoroughly demonstrate their existence. We first derive a lattice stress tensor operator in the context of the fermionic Harper-Hofstadter(HH) model which captures the graviton in the flat band limit. Importantly, we discover that such lattice stress-tensor operators are deeply connected to lattice quadrupolar density correlators, readily generalizable to generic Chern bands. We then explicitly show the adiabatic connection between FQH and FCI chiral graviton modes by interpolating from a low flux HH model to a Checkerboard lattice model that hosts a topological flat band. In particular, using state-of-the-art matrix product state and exact diagonalization simulations, we provide strong evidence that chiral graviton modes are long-lived excitations in FCIs despite the lack of continuous symmetries and the scattering with a two-magnetoroton continuum. By means of a careful finite-size analysis, we show that the lattice generates a finite but small intrinsic decay rate for the graviton mode. We discuss the relevance of our results for the exploration of graviton modes in FCI phases realized in solid state settings, as well as cold atom experiments.

Superdiffusion and anomalous fluctuations in chiral integrable dynamics

Symmetries strongly influence transport properties of quantum many-body systems, and can lead to deviations from the generic case of diffusion. In this work, we study the impact of time-reversal symmetry breaking on the transport and its universal aspects in integrable chiral spin ladders. We observe that the infinite-temperature spin transport is superdiffusive with a dynamical critical exponent z = 3/2 matching the one of the Kardar-Parisi-Zhang (KPZ) universality class, which also lacks the time reversal symmetry. However, we find that fluctuations of the net magnetization transfer deviate from the KPZ predictions. Moreover, the full probability distribution of the associated spin current obeys fluctuation symmetry despite broken time-reversal and space-reflection symmetries. To further investigate the role of conserved quantities, we introduce an integrable quantum circuit that shares the essential symmetries with the chiral ladder, and which exhibits analogous dynamical behaviour in the absence of energy conservation. Our work shows that time-reversal symmetry breaking is compatible with superdiffusion, but insufficient to stabilize the KPZ universality in integrable systems. This suggests that additional fundamental features are missing in order to identify the emergence of such dynamics in quantum matter.

Emergent dipole field theory in atomic ladders

We study the dynamics of hard-core bosons on ladders, in the presence of strong kinetic constrains akin to those of the Bariev model. We use a combination of analytical methods and numerical simulations to establish the phase diagram of the model. The model displays a paired Tomonaga-Luttinger liquid phase featuring an emergent dipole symmetry, which encodes the local pairing constraint into a global, nonlocal quantity. We scrutinize the effect of such emergent low-energy symmetry during quench dynamics including single-particle defects. We observe that, despite being approximate, the dipole symmetry still leads to very slow relaxation dynamics, which we model via an effective field theory. The model we discuss is amenable to realization in both cold atoms in optical lattices and Rydberg atom arrays with dynamics taking place solely in the Rydberg manifold. To observe the unusual dynamics of excitations in such experimental platforms, we propose a two-step protocol, which starts with the quasi-adiabatic preparation of low-energy states, followed by the local creation of defects and their study under quench dynamics.

Chiral Gravitons on the Lattice

Chiral graviton modes are elusive excitations arising from the hidden quantum geometry of fractional quantum Hall states. It remains unclear, however, whether this picture extends to lattice models, where continuum translations are broken and additional quasiparticle decay channels arise. We present a framework in which we explicitly derive a field theory incorporating lattice chiral graviton operators within the paradigmatic bosonic Harper-Hofstadter model. Extensive numerical evidence suggests that chiral graviton modes persist away from the continuum, and are well captured by the proposed lattice operators. We identify geometric quenches as a viable experimental probe, paving the way for the exploration of chiral gravitons in near-term quantum simulation experiments.

Local vs non-local dynamics in cavity-coupled Rydberg atom arrays

Locality is a transversal principle that governs quantum dynamics of many-body systems. However, for cavity embedded systems, such fundamental notion is hindered by the presence of non-local cavity modes, leaving space for new possible dynamical behaviors. Here, we investigate the real-time dynamics of low-energy excitations in one dimensional Rydberg atom arrays coupled to a global cavity mode. We derive an effective description in terms of a Tavis-Cummings-Ising model, whose phase diagram features ordered and disordered phases. The non-local nature of the cavity mode drastically affects the emergent meson and string dynamics. Mesons hybridize coherently with the cavity photons, leading to composite meson-polaritons excitations. Strings, differently from local interacting theories, acquire a finite kinetic energy thanks to non-local cavity-mediated interactions between the underlying domain-walls. We then conclude by presenting a new concrete experimental blueprint for a cavity QED Rydberg atom array simulator where the physics outlined in this work can be realized.

Network construction of non-Abelian chiral spin liquids

We use a network of chiral junctions to construct a family of topological chiral spin liquids in two spatial dimensions. The chiral spin liquid phase harbors SU(2)$_k$ anyons, which stem from the underlying SU(2)$_k$ WZW models that describe the constituent spin chains of the network. The network exhibits quantized spin and thermal Hall conductances. We illustrate our construction by inspecting the topological properties of the SU(2)$_2$ model. We find that this model has emergent Ising anyons, with spinons acting as vortex excitations that bind Majorana zero modes. We also show that the ground state of this network is threefold degenerate on the torus, asserting its non-Abelian character. Our results shed new light on the stability of non-Abelian topological phases in artificial quantum materials.

Chiral fixed point in a junction of critical spin-1 chains

Junctions of one-dimensional systems are of great interest to the development of synthetic materials that harbor topological phases. We study a junction of three gapless spin-1 chains described by the $\mathrm{SU(2)}_{2}$ Wess-Zumino-Wittten model and coupled by exchange and chiral three-spin interactions. We show that a chiral fixed point appears as a special point on the transition line separating two regimes described by open boundary conditions, corresponding to decoupled chains and the formation of a boundary spin singlet state. Along this transition line, the junction behaves as a tunable spin circulator as the spin conductance varies continuously with the coupling constant of a marginal boundary operator. Since the spectrum of the junction contains fractional excitations such as Majorana fermions, in this paper, we set the stage for network constructions of non-Abelian chiral spin liquids.

Fractons from a liquid of singlet pairs

Fracton phases of matter feature a variety of exciting phenomena stemming from the restricted mobility of their quasiparticles. Here we consider a model of interacting electrons in one dimension that describes hopping of spin-singlet pairs and obeys both charge and dipole conservation laws. The model contains Bethe ansatz integrable sectors which allow us to solve the ground state and calculate the exact spin and single-electron excitation gaps. We observe hallmarks of fractonic behavior, including localization of single-electron excitations and propensity to clustering. Our results demonstrate the important role of the dipole moment conservation law in a simple model of spin-1/2 fermions.

Stable and Metastable Kinetic Ferromagnetism on a Ring

Performing an exact diagonalization of the effective spin problem, a ferromagnetic ground state of kinetic origin is shown to emerge in a system of $N$ strongly correlated electrons on a $L$-site ring ($L > N$). This phenomenon is brought about by the quantum necklace statistics originated from the no double occupancy constraint leading to a fractional shifted electron momentum quantization. As a consequence of such special energy level distribution, the kinetic ferromagnetism is stable only for $N=3$. For odd $N>3$ the fully polarized FM state energy is only a local minimum but it is protected by a finite energy barrier that inhibits one spin-flip processes. The metastable ferromagnetic state survives perturbations of small magnitude opening up a possibility of being experimentally observed by an appropriate tuning of the interdot tunneling amplitudes in currently available quantum dot arrays.
