Field-level inference of growth rate from DESI BGS galaxy and ZTF supernova simulations

Galaxy peculiar velocities are a powerful probe of the growth rate of structure $f$ at low redshifts ($z < 0.2$), measured through the combination $fσ_8$. These constraints are improved by combining peculiar velocities with redshift space distortion measurements from the galaxy density field. We create a dedicated simulation to test growth rate measurement from the combination of Type Ia supernova peculiar velocities from the Zwicky Transient Facility (ZTF) with the Bright Galaxy Survey (BGS) of the Dark Energy Spectroscopic Instrument (DESI), using projections for 6 years of ZTF data and the Data Release 3 (DR3) of DESI. We apply a wide-angle likelihood-based field-level inference to combine ZTF velocity and DESI BGS density fields simultaneously. This procedure is performed while varying the different density and velocity field configurations. Adding DESI galaxy density information to the ZTF supernovae improves the constraint on nuisance parameters and yields up to a 50 \% reduction in the growth-rate uncertainty without introducing bias. If we consider the conservatively best DESI density configuration, the mean error bar achievable by a DESI ZTF measurement is $σ_{fσ_8} = {}^{+0.047}_{-0.048}$ corresponding to a 10 \% error. These measurements will play a critical role for testing modified gravity theories.

Model-Independent Measurement of Baryon Gas Fractions through Galaxy-Galaxy Lensing and the Kinematic Sunyaev-Zel'dovich Effect

Baryon feedback is a leading source of systematic uncertainty for cosmology from weak lensing, but measurements of the gas distribution around galaxies have largely relied on parametric profile models or simulation-calibrated frameworks. We present model independent measurements of the radial gas fraction profile around galaxies, combining galaxy-galaxy lensing and kinematic Sunyaev-Zel'dovich (kSZ) effect. We introduce a method that applies the same radial $ΔΣ$ aperture filter to both the galaxy-galaxy lensing shear field and the velocity-weighted kSZ temperature maps; their ratio directly yields $ΔΣ$ filtered gas fraction $f_{\rm gas}(R)$, the ratio of ionized gas to total matter as a function of projected radius. We apply this approach to DESI DR2 Bright Galaxy Survey (BGS, $\bar{z} \approx 0.26$) and Luminous Red Galaxy (LRG, $0.4 < z < 1.1$) samples, using ACT DR6 component-separated CMB maps for kSZ, and the HSC Year 3 shear catalog for weak lensing. After correcting for ACT beam suppression using a simulation-calibrated compensation factor, we detect baryon depletion relative to the cosmic mean baryon fraction at SNR = 17.2 (BGS) and SNR = 13.8 (LRG bin 1). Comparison with six hydrodynamical simulations from the Illustris, IllustrisTNG, SIMBA, and FLAMINGO suites shows that the fiducial FLAMINGO run most closely tracks the observed radial gas distribution in both samples, with Illustris-1 and TNG300-1 bracketing the data from below and above at small radii. We find a mild discrepancy between the kSZ measurements in the South and North Galactic Caps in one LRG redshift bin, which may indicate residual systematics. We show that the ratio is robust to splits by stellar mass and to the removal of close pairs. These results establish $ΔΣ$ filtering of kSZ versus weak lensing signal as a model-independent probe of the baryon distribution around galaxies.

Enhancing DESI DR1 Full-Shape analyses using HOD-informed priors

We present an analysis of DESI Data Release 1 (DR1) that incorporates Halo Occupation Distribution (HOD)-informed priors into Full-Shape (FS) modeling of the power spectrum based on cosmological perturbation theory (PT). By leveraging physical insights from the galaxy-halo connection, these HOD-informed priors on nuisance parameters substantially mitigate projection effects in extended cosmological models that allow for dynamical dark energy. The resulting credible intervals now encompass the posterior maximum from the baseline analysis using gaussian priors, eliminating a significant posterior shift observed in baseline studies. In the $Λ$CDM framework, a combined DESI DR1 FS information and constraints from the DESI DR1 baryon acoustic oscillations (BAO)-including Big Bang Nucleosynthesis (BBN) constraints and a weak prior on the scalar spectral index-yields $Ω_{\rm m} = 0.2994\pm 0.0090$ and $σ_8 = 0.836^{+0.024}_{-0.027}$, representing improvements of approximately 4% and 23% over the baseline analysis, respectively. For the $w_0w_a$CDM model, our results from various data combinations are highly consistent, with all configurations converging to a region with $w_0 > -1$ and $w_a < 0$. This convergence not only suggests intriguing hints of dynamical dark energy but also underscores the robustness of our HOD-informed prior approach in delivering reliable cosmological constraints.
