Relativistic equilibrium fluid configurations around rotating deformed compact objects

We investigate the physical properties of equilibrium sequences of non-self-gravitating surfaces that characterize thick disks around a rotating deformed compact object described by a stationary generalization of the static q-metric. The spacetime corresponds to an exact solution of Einstein's field equations so that we can perform the analysis for arbitrary values of the quadrupole moment and rotation parameter. To study the properties of this disk's model, we analyze bounded trajectories in this spacetime. Further, we find that depending on the values of the parameters, we can have various disc structures that can easily be distinguished from the static case and also from the Schwarzschild background. We argue that this study may be used to evaluate the rotation and quadrupole parameters of the central compact object.

Approximate perfect fluid solutions with quadrupole moment

We investigate the interior Einstein's equations in the case of a static, axially symmetric, perfect fluid source. We present a particular line element that is specially suitable for the investigation of this type of interior gravitational fields. Assuming that the deviation from spherically symmetry is small, we linearize the corresponding field equations and find several classes of vacuum and perfect fluid solutions. We find physically meaninful spacetimes by imposing appropriate matching conditions.

Repulsive gravity effects in horizon formation. Horizon remnants in naked singularities

Repulsive gravity is a well known characteristic of naked singularities. In this work, we explore light surfaces and find new effects of repulsive gravity. We compare Kerr naked singularities with the corresponding black hole counterparts and find certain structures that are identified as horizon remnants. We argue that these features might be significant for the comprehension of processes that lead to the formation or eventually destruction of black hole Killing horizons. These features can be detected by observing photon orbits, particularly close to the rotation axis, which can be used to distinguish naked singularities from black hole.

Gravitational field of slightly deformed naked singularities

We derive a particular approximate solution of Einstein equations, describing the gravitational field of a mass distribution that slightly deviates from spherical symmetry. The deviation is described by means of a quadrupole parameter that is responsible for the appearance of a curvature singularity, which is not covered by a horizon. We investigate the motion of test particles in the gravitational field of this naked singularity and show that the quadrupole parameter affects the properties of Schwarzschild trajectories. By investigating radial geodesics, we find that no effects of repulsive gravity are present. We interpreted this result as indicating that repulsive gravity is non-linear effect.

Generalized Logotropic Models and their Cosmological Constraints

We propose a new class of cosmological unified dark sector models called "{\em Generalized Logotropic Models}". They depend on a free parameter $n$. The original logotropic model [P.H. Chavanis, Eur. Phys. J. Plus {\bf 130}, 130 (2015)] is a special case of our generalized model corresponding to $n=1$. In our scenario, the Universe is filled with a single fluid, a generalized logotropic dark fluid (GLDF), whose pressure $P$ includes higher order logarithmic terms of the rest-mass density $ρ_m$. The total energy density $ε$ is the sum of the rest-mass energy density $ρ_m c^2$ and the internal energy density $u$ which play the role of dark matter energy density $ε_m$ and dark energy density $ε_{de}$, respectively. We investigate the cosmological behavior of the generalized logotropic models by focusing on the evolution of the energy density, scale factor, equation of state parameter, decceleration parameter and squared speed of sound. Low values of $n\le 3$ are favored. We also study the asymptotic behavior of the generalized logotropic models. In particular, we show that the model presents a phantom behavior and has three distinct ways of evolution depending on the value of $n$. For $n\le 2$, it leads to a little rip and for $n>2$ to a big rip. We predict the value of the big rip time as a function of $n$ without any free (undetermined) parameter.

Thermodynamic length, geometric efficiency and Legendre invariance

Thermodynamic length is a metric distance between equilibrium thermodynamic states that asymptotically bounds the dissipation induced by a finite time transformation of a thermodynamic system. By means of thermodynamic length, we first evaluate the departures from ideal to real gases in geometric thermodynamics with and without Legendre invariance. In particular, we investigate ideal and real gases in the Ruppeiner and geometrothermodynamic formalisms. Afterwards, we formulate a strategy to relate thermodynamic lengths to efficiency of thermodynamic systems in both the aforementioned frameworks in the working assumption of small deviations from ideality. In this respect, we propose a geometric efficiency definition built up in analogy to quantum thermodynamic systems. We show the result that this efficiency is higher for geometrothermodynamic fluids. Moreover, we stress this efficiency could be used as a novel geometric way to distinguish ideal from non-ideal thermal behaviors. In such a way, it could be useful to quantify deviations from ideality for a variety of real gases. Finally, we discuss the corresponding applications of our recipe to classical thermodynamic systems, noticing that our findings could help geometrically grasping the nature of different metrizations on manifolds of equilibrium thermal states.

Darmois matching and $C^3$ matching

We apply the Darmois and the $C^3$ matching conditions to three different spherically symmetric spacetimes. The exterior spacetime is described by the Schwarzschild vacuum solution whereas for the interior counterpart we choose different perfect fluid solutions with the same symmetry. We show that Darmois matching conditions are satisfied in all three cases whereas the $C^3$ conditions are not fulfilled. We argue that this difference is due to a non-physical behavior of the pressure on the matching surface.

Accretion disk luminosity for black holes surrounded by dark matter with anisotropic pressure

We investigate the luminosity of the accretion disk for a static black hole surrounded by dark matter with anisotropic pressure. We calculate all basic orbital parameters of test particles in the accretion disk, such as angular velocity, angular momentum, energy and radius of the innermost circular stable orbit as functions of the dark matter density, radial pressure and anisotropic parameter, which establishes the relationship between the radial and tangential pressures. We show that the presence of dark matter with anisotropic pressure makes a noticeable difference in the geometry around a Schwarzschild black hole, affecting the radiative flux, differential luminosity and spectral luminosity of the accretion disk.

Geometrothermodynamics of van der Waals systems

We explore the properties of the equilibrium space of van der Waals thermodynamic systems. We use an invariant representation of the fundamental equation by using the law of corresponding states, which allows us to perform a general analysis for all possible van der Waals systems. The investigation of the equilibrium space is performed by using the Legendre invariant formalism of geometrothermodynamics, which guarantees the independence of the results from the choice of thermodynamic potential. We find all the curvature singularities of the equilibrium space that correspond to first and second order phase transitions. We compare our results with those obtained by using Hessian metrics for the equilibrium space. We conclude that the formalism of geometrothermodynamics allows us to determine the complete phase transition structure of systems with two thermodynamic degrees of freedom.

Luminosity of accretion disks in compact objects with quadrupole

We consider the circular motion of test particles in the gravitational field of a static and axially-symmetric compact object described by the $q$-metric. To this end, we calculate orbital parameters of test particles on accretion disks such as angular velocity ($Ω$), total energy ($E$), angular momentum ($L$), and radius of the innermost stable circular orbit ($r_{ISCO}$) as functions of the mass ($m$) and quadrupole ($q$) parameters of the source. The radiative flux, differential, and spectral luminosity of the accretion disk, which are quantities that can be experimentally measured, are then explored in detail. The obtained results are compared with the corresponding ones for the Schwarzschild and Kerr black holes in order to establish whether black holes may be distinguished from the $q$-metric via observations of the accretion disk's spectrum.

Black shells and naked shells

We study the collapse of a thin dust shell from the point of view of the horizon dynamics. We identify the critical surfaces at which time and space coordinates interchange their roles and investigate their properties by using the formalism of trapped surfaces. We show the existence of marginally outer trapped surfaces that are associated with the presence of quasi-local horizons. A particular shell configuration that avoids the formation of horizons is interpreted as naked shell.

Quantum signatures from Horava-Lifshitz cosmography

In this paper we propose an alternative cosmography by considering Horava-Lifshitz gravity as a model of quantum gravity to search for quantum effects at the cosmological level. For our analyses we consider current late universe surveys and a Gravitational Waves forecast from Einstein Telescope. We found naturally a non-flat scenario with $Ω_k =-0.021^{+0.023}_{-0.029}$ with $H_0 = 71.904^{+1.406}_{-1.347}$, without showing the standard reported $3.4$-$σ$ inconsistency. Furthermore, we obtained a specific value for the Ho\v rava parameter $ω\approx -3.8\times 10^{-14}$, which can be interpreted as a measure of a quantum effect and could be used to further test this quantum gravity model. We conclude that classically, according to the $Λ$CDM model, our universe seems to be spatially flat, but in fact, it is curved from a quantum point of view.

Reparametrizations and metric structures in thermodynamic phase space

We investigate the consequences of reparametrizations in the geometric description of thermodynamics analyzing the effects on the thermodynamic phase space. It is known that the contact and Riemannian structures of the thermodynamic phase space are related to thermodynamic equilibrium and statistical fluctuations in the Boltzmann-Gibbs statistical mechanics. The physical motivation for this analysis rests upon the possibility of having, instead of a direct control of the intensive parameters determining the state of the corresponding physical reservoirs, the control of a set of differentiable functions of the original variables. Likewise, we consider a set of differentiable functions of the extensive variables accounting for the possibility of not having direct access to the original variables. We find that the effect of reparametrizations on the thermodynamic phase space can be codified, in geometrical terms, in its contact and Riemannian structures. In particular, we single out a rank-two tensor that enters in the definition of the metric which geometrically comprises the information about such reparametrizations. We notice that even if these geometric structures are modified by the reparametrizations, the metric structure on the thermodynamic space of equilibrium states is preserved.

Repulsive regions in Lemaître-Tolman-Bondi gravitational collapse

We show that in the inhomogeneous Lema{î}tre-Tolman-Bondi space-time there are specific regions in which repulsive gravity exists. To find these regions, we use an invariant definition of repulsive gravity based upon the behavior of the curvature eigenvalues. In addition, we analyze the effects of repulsive gravity on the dynamics of the gravitational collapse. In particular, we investigate the collapse in the case of the parabolic solution for the effective scale factor of the Lema{î}tre-Tolman-Bondi metric, corresponding to the marginally bound case. Exploring the corresponding cut-offs at which gravity becomes repulsive, we notice that black holes with dominant repulsive effects are not excluded \emph{a priori}. Indeed, we demonstrate that the collapse leads, in general, to the formation of a central naked singularity; however, for particular values of the free parameters entering the model, black holes with dominant repulsive gravity can exist. We show that the expected physical process is not modified as the marginally bound condition is dropped out. Moreover, we show that this is true independently of the hypothesis that the energy-momentum tensor is built up in terms of pressureless matter. Further, we demonstrate that geodesic deviations can depend on the sign of the curvature eigenvalues. Finally, we give an astrophysical interpretation of black holes with dominant repulsive gravity. Indeed, we argue that compact objects with dominant repulsive gravity could be interpreted as progenitors of Gamma Ray Bursts.

Singularity theorems in Schwarzschild spacetimes

We present a review of the two prominent singularity theorems due to Penrose and Hawking, as well as their physical interpretation. Their usage is discussed in detail for the Schwarzschild spacetime with positive and negative mass. First, we present a detailed mathematical proof to formally guarantee the existence of a singularity of geodesic incompleteness for the case of positive mass. Second, we discuss the applicability of the mathematical tools used by the theorems in the negative mass case. The physical implications of the validity or inconsistency of the hypotheses of such theorems on the latter case, are also exhibited. As far as this analysis is concerned, some clues are produced regarding future research that could result in general properties for naked singularities.

Flux quantization in dilatonic Taub-NUT dyons

Spacetimes that include a boundary at infinity have a non-trivial topology. The homology of the background influences gauge fields living on them and lead to topological charges. We investigate the charges and fluxes of fields over a Taub--NUT background in Einstein--Maxwell dilaton--axion gravity, by using the relative homology and de Rham cohomology. It turns out that the electromagnetic sector is devoid of restrictions from a topological viewpoint. There are, however, flux quanta for the axion and dilaton fields. These results are obtained from the absolute homology of the spacetime boundary. The solutions we probe originate in the four dimensional low energy limit of heterotic string theory. So our results are complemented by the stringy coupling present in the fields. The quantization has a bundle theoretic interpretation as the axion's flux corresponds to the topological index of an underlying 2-bundle.

Geometrothermodynamics of black hole binary systems

We study a stationary and axisymmetric binary system composed of two identical Kerr black holes, whose physical parameters satisfy the Smarr thermodynamic formula. Then, we use the formalism of geometrothermodynamics to show that the spatial distance between the black holes must be considered as a thermodynamic variable. We investigate the main thermodynamic properties of the system by using the contact structure of the phase space, which generates the first law of thermodynamics and the equilibrium conditions. The phase transition structure of the system is investigated through the curvature singularities of the equilibrium space. It is shown that the thermodynamic and stability properties and the phase transition structure of the binary system strongly depend on the distance between the black holes.

Topological Characterization of Higher Dimensional Charged Taub-NUT Instantons

Recently, we have shown that non-selfdual self-gravitating dyonic fields with magnetic mass generalize the Dirac monopole. The unique topological index, which characterizes the field, is a four dimensional analogue of the famous monopole configuration. An unexpected result of this analysis is that the electric parameter can only take certain discrete values as a consequence of applying the path integral approach to quantize the magnetic flux. Here, we show how this result can be generalized to higher dimensions, considering a special type of inhomogeneous geometries. Our results apply to a vast range of theories and situations in which topological charges are present. For concreteness, we focus here on Lovelock--Maxwell solutions and show that the magnetic flux corresponds to a topological excitation and the electric flux becomes discrete.
