A result from the thesis of the french astronomer Alexandre Véronnet: critical latitudes

We are interested in a result found in the thesis of the astronomer Alexandre Véronnet (1876-1951) : "Precession of a fluid ring rotating along a parallel axis. Zone of maximum crustal compression at 35$^\circ$. A cause of earthquakes". In 1912, Alexandre Véronnet hypothesizes that the Earth's rotation influences the occurrence of earthquakes in the 35th parallel zone. Has this hypothesis been taken up by other authors, geophysicists, seismologists, etc.? Has it been confirmed or refuted? What is the literature on this subject? Our aim is not to draw a conclusion on this hypothesis but to examine the dissemination of a scientific result.

Paul Mansion (1844-1919) : more than 400 academic publications, Centenary Paul Mansion (working paper, 2019)

According to the Liber Memorialis of the University of Ghent, the Belgian mathematician Paul Mansion (1844-1919) has published more than 349 academic papers and books. For our part, we were able to calculate the correct number by using the journal Das Jahrbuch über die Fortschritte der Mathematik (1869-1942). We concluded that Paul Mansion has published about 400 academic papers and books.

Robert de Montessus de Ballore's 1902 theorem on algebraic continued fractions : genesis and circulation

Robert de Montessus de Ballore proved in 1902 his famous theorem on the convergence of Padé approximants of meromorphic functions. In this paper, we will first describe the genesis of the theorem, then investigate its circulation. A number of letters addressed to Robert de Montessus by different mathematicians will be quoted to help determining the scientific context and the steps that led to the result. In particular, excerpts of the correspondence with Henri Padé in the years 1901-1902 played a leading role. The large number of authors who mentioned the theorem soon after its derivation, for instance Nörlund and Perron among others, indicates a fast circulation due to factors that will be thoroughly explained.
