Ordering-Independent Wheeler-DeWitt Equation for Flat Minisuperspace Models

We consider minisuperspace models with two-derivative kinetic terms, assuming a flat target space and a closed Universe. We show that, upon canonical quantization of the Hamiltonian, only a restricted class of operator orderings is compatible with the path-integral formulation. Remarkably, these orderings are physically equivalent to all orders in $\hbar$. More precisely, each choice of path-integral measure in the definition of the wavefunction path integral uniquely determines an operator ordering, and hence a corresponding Wheeler-DeWitt equation. These orderings are in one-to-one correspondence with the Jacobians arising from field redefinitions of a set of canonical fields. For each operator ordering consistent with a path-integral measure, we identify a positive definite Hilbert-space inner product. All such prescriptions define the same quantum theory, in the sense that they yield identical physical observables. We illustrate our formalism by applying it to de Sitter Jackiw-Teitelboim gravity and to the Starobinsky model.

The exact Wheeler-DeWitt equation for the scale-factor minisuperspace model

We consider the classical minisuperspace model describing a closed, homogeneous and isotropic Universe, with a positive cosmological constant. Upon canonical quantization, the infinite number of possible operator orderings in the quantum Hamiltonian leads to distinct Wheeler-DeWitt equations for the wavefunction $ψ$ of the Universe. Similarly, ambiguity arises in the path-integral formulation of $ψ$, due to the infinite choices of path-integral measures for the single degree of freedom of the model. For each choice of path-integral measure, we determine the correct operator ordering of the quantum Hamiltonian and derive the exact form of the Wheeler-DeWitt equation, including all corrections in $\hbar$. Additionally, we impose Hermiticity of the Hamiltonian to deduce the Hilbert-space measure $μ$, which appears in the definition of the Hermitian inner product. Remarkably, all quantum predictions can be expressed through the combination $Ψ=\sqrtμ\, ψ$, which satisfies a universal Wheeler-DeWitt equation, independent of the initial path-integral prescription. This result demonstrates that all seemingly distinct quantum theories arising from different quantization schemes of the same classical model are fundamentally equivalent.

Closed FRW holography: A time-dependent ER=EPR realization

We extend a recent de Sitter holographic proposal and entanglement entropy prescription to generic closed FRW cosmologies in arbitrary dimensions, and propose that for large classes of bouncing and Big Bang/Big Crunch cosmologies, the full spacetime can be encoded holographically on two holographic screens, associated to two antipodal observers. In the expanding phase, the two screens lie at the apparent horizons. In the contracting phase, there is an infinite number of possible trajectories of the holographic screens, which can be grouped in equivalence classes. In each class the effective holographic theory can be derived from a pair of ``parent'' screens on the apparent horizons. A number of cases including moduli dominated cosmologies escape our discussion, and it is expected that two antipodal observers and their associated screens do not suffice to reconstruct these cosmologies. The leading contributions to the entanglement entropy between the screens arise from a minimal extremal trapped or anti-trapped surface lying in the region between them. This picture entails a time-dependent realization of the ER=EPR conjecture, where an effective geometrical bridge connecting the screens via the minimal extremal surface emerges from entanglement. For the Big Crunch contracting cases, the screens disentangle and the geometrical bridge closes off when the minimal extremal trapped sphere hits the Big Crunch singularity at a finite time before the collapse of the Universe. Semiclassical, thermal corrections are incorporated in the cases of radiation dominated cosmologies.

On the stability of open-string orbifold models with broken supersymmetry

We consider an open-string realisation of $\mathcal{N}=2\to \mathcal{N}=0$ spontaneous breaking of supersymmetry in four-dimensional Minkowski spacetime. It is based on type IIB orientifold theory compactified on $T^2\times T^4/\mathbb{Z}_2$, with Scherk--Schwarz supersymmetry breaking implemented along $T^2$. We show that in the regions of moduli space where the supersymmetry breaking scale is lower than the other scales, there exist configurations with minima that have massless Bose-Fermi degeneracy and hence vanishing one-loop effective potential, up to exponentially suppressed corrections. These backgrounds describe non-Abelian gauge theories, with all open-string moduli and blowing up modes of $T^4/\mathbb{Z}_2$ stabilized, while all untwisted closed-string moduli remain flat directions. Other backgrounds with strictly positive effective potentials exist, where the only instabilities arising at one loop are associated with the supersymmetry breaking scale, which runs away. All of these backgrounds are consistent non-perturbatively.

Bridging the static patches: de Sitter holography and entanglement

In the context of de Sitter static-patch holography, two prescriptions have been put forward for holographic entanglement entropy computations, the monolayer and bilayer proposals. In this paper, we reformulate both prescriptions in a covariant way and extend them to include quantum corrections. We argue that the bilayer proposal is self-consistent, while the monolayer proposal exhibits contradictory behavior. In fact, the bilayer proposal leads to a stronger holographic description, in which the full spacetime is encoded on two screens at the cosmological horizons. At the classical level, we find large degeneracies of minimal extremal homologous surfaces, localized at the horizons, which can be lifted by quantum corrections. The entanglement wedges of subregions of the screens exhibit non-trivial behaviors, hinting at the existence of interesting phase transitions and non-locality in the holographic theory. In particular, while each screen encodes its corresponding static patch, we show that the entanglement wedge of the screen with the larger quantum area extends and covers the causal diamond between the screens, with a phase transition occurring when the quantum areas of the screens become equal. We argue that the capacity of the screens to encode the region between them is lost, when these are pushed further in the static patches of the observers and placed on stretched horizons.

A unimodular-like string effective description

We show that vanishing of the sigma-model beta-functions for the metric $g_{μν}$, antisymmetric tensor $B_{μν}$ and dilaton $Φ$ of any string-theory model in $D$ dimensions at tree level can be obtained from a universal effective action, provided that the field combination $\sqrt{-g}e^{-2Φ}$ is non-dynamical. The central-charge deficit term is omitted from the action and appears as an integration constant at the level of the field equations. The analysis is done at leading order in $α'$, i.e. at the two-derivative level in the effective description. It can be extended to incorporate higher order string-loop corrections, Ramond-Ramond forms and moduli fields. In all cases, the non-dynamical field combination turns out to be $\sqrt{-g}\, U$, where $U$ is the effective potential. When certain fluxes are fixed and the moduli fields are stabilized, no cosmological term will arise in the action. Instead, the cosmological constant will appear as an integration constant as in unimodular modifications of general relativity.

Probability distribution for the quantum universe

We determine the inner product on the Hilbert space of wavefunctions of the universe by imposing the Hermiticity of the quantum Hamiltonian in the context of the minisuperspace model. The corresponding quantum probability density reproduces successfully the classical probability distribution in the $\hbar \to 0$ limit, for closed universes filled with a perfect fluid of index $w$. When $-1/3<w\le 1$, the wavefunction is normalizable and the quantum probability density becomes vanishingly small at the big bang/big crunch singularities, at least at the semi-classical level. Quantum expectation values of physical geometrical quantities, which diverge classically at the singularities, are shown to be finite.

Wavefunction of the universe: Reparametrization invariance and field redefinitions of the minisuperspace path integral

We consider the Hartle-Hawking wavefunction of the universe defined as a Euclidean path integral that satisfies the "no-boundary proposal." We focus on the simplest minisuperspace model that comprises a single scale factor degree of freedom and a positive cosmological constant. The model can be seen as a non-linear $σ$-model with a line-segment base. We reduce the path integral over the lapse function to an integral over the proper length of the base and use diffeomorphism-invariant measures for the ghosts and the scale factor. As a result, the gauge-fixed path integral is independent of the gauge. However, we point out that all field redefinitions of the scale factor degree of freedom yield different choices of gauge-invariant path-integral measures. For each prescription, we compute the wavefunction at the semi-classical level and find a different result. We resolve in each case the ambiguity in the form of the Wheeler-DeWitt equation at this level of approximation. By imposing that the Hamiltonians associated with these possibly distinct quantum theories are Hermitian, we determine the inner products of the corresponding Hilbert spaces and find that they lead to a universal norm, at least semi-classically. Quantum predictions are thus independent of the prescription at this level of approximation. Finally, all wavefunctions of the Hilbert spaces of the minisuperspace model we consider turn out to be non-normalizable, including the no-boundary states.

Geometry of orientifold vacua and supersymmetry breaking

Starting from a peculiar orientifold projection proposed long ago by Angelantonj and Cardella, we elaborate on a novel perturbative scenario that involves only D-branes, together with the two types of orientifold planes ${\rm O}_{\pm}$ and anti-orientifold planes $\overline{\rm O}_{\pm}$. We elucidate the microscopic ingredients of such models, connecting them to a novel realization of brane supersymmetry breaking. Depending on the position of the D-branes in the internal space, supersymmetry can be broken at the string scale on branes, or alternatively only at the massive level. The main novelty of this construction is that it features no NS-NS disk tadpoles, while avoiding open-string instabilities. The one-loop potential, which depends on the positions of the D-branes, is minimized for maximally broken, nonlinearly realized supersymmetry. The orientifold projection and the effective field theory description reveal a soft breaking of supersymmetry in the closed-string sector. In such models it is possible to decouple the gravitino mass from the value of the scalar potential, while avoiding brane instabilities.

Gauge fixing and field redefinitions of the Hartle--Hawking wavefunction path integral

We review some recent results concerning the Hartle--Hawking wavefunction of the universe. We focus on pure Einstein theory of gravity in the presence of a positive cosmological constant. We carefully implement the gauge-fixing procedure for the minisuperspace path integral, by identifying the single modulus and by using diffeomorphism-invariant measures for the ghosts and the scale factor. Field redefinitions of the scale factor yield different prescriptions for computing the no-boundary ground-state wavefunction. They give rise to an infinite set of ground-state wavefunctions, each satisfying a different Wheeler--DeWitt equation, at the semi-classical level. The differences in the form of the Wheeler--DeWitt equations can be traced to ordering ambiguities in constructing the Hamiltonian upon canonical quantization. However, the inner products of the corresponding Hilbert spaces turn out to be equivalent, at least semi-classically. Thus, the model yields universal quantum predictions.

Two-point functions of Neumann-Dirichlet open-string sector moduli

We compute at one loop the two-point functions of massless scalars in the Neumann-Dirichlet open-string sector of the type IIB orientifold compactified on $T^2\times T^4/\mathbb{Z}_2$, when $\mathcal{N}=2$ supersymmetry is spontaneously broken. This is done by evaluating correlation functions of ``boundary-changing vertex operators'' which are analogous to correlators of twist fields for closed strings. We use our results to compute the mass developed at one loop by the moduli fields arising in the Neumann-Dirichlet sector.

One-loop masses of Neumann-Dirichlet open strings and boundary-changing vertex operators

We derive the masses acquired at one loop by massless scalars in the Neumann-Dirichlet sector of open strings, when supersymmetry is spontaneously broken. It is done by computing two-point functions of "boundary-changing vertex operators" inserted on the boundaries of the annulus and Möbius strip. This requires the evaluation of correlators of "excited boundary-changing fields," which are analogous to excited twist fields for closed strings. We work in the type IIB orientifold theory compactified on $T^2\times T^4/\mathbb{Z}_2$, where $\mathcal{N}=2$ supersymmetry is broken to $\mathcal{N}=0$ by the Scherk-Schwarz mechanism implemented along $T^2$. Even though the full expression of the squared masses is complicated, it reduces to a very simple form when the lowest scale of the background is the supersymmetry breaking scale $M_{3/2}$. We apply our results to analyze in this regime the stability at the quantum level of the moduli fields arising in the Neumann-Dirichlet sector. This completes the study of Ref. [32], where the quantum masses of all other types of moduli arising in the open- or closed-string sectors are derived. Ultimately, we identify all brane configurations that produce backgrounds without tachyons at one loop and yield an effective potential exponentially suppressed, or strictly positive with runaway behavior of $M_{3/2}$.

Heterotic orbifolds, reduced rank and SO(2n+1) characters

The moduli space of the maximally supersymmetric heterotic string in d-dimensional Minkowski space contains various components characterized by the rank of the gauge symmetries of the vacua they parametrize. We develop an approach for describing in a unified way continuous Wilson lines which parametrize a component of the moduli space, together with discrete deformations responsible for the switch from one component to the other. Applied to a component that contains vacua with SO(2n+1) gauge-symmetry factors, our approach yields a description of all backgrounds of the component in terms of free-orbifold models. The orbifold generators turn out to act symmetrically or asymmetrically on the internal space, with or without discrete torsion. Our derivations use extensively affine characters of SO(2n+1). As a by-product, we find a peculiar orbifold description of the heterotic string in ten dimensions, where all gauge degrees of freedom arise as twisted states, while the untwisted sector reduces to the gravitational degrees of freedom.

Moduli stability in type I string orbifold models

We analyze the stability of the moduli at the quantum level in an open-string model realizing the $\mathcal{N}=2\to \mathcal{N}=0$ spontaneous breaking of supersymmetry in four-dimensional Minkowski spacetime. In the region of moduli space where the supersymmetry breaking scale is lower than the other scales, we identify vanishing minima of the one-loop effective potential, up to exponentially small corrections. In these backgrounds, the spectrum satisfies Bose-Fermi degeneracy at the massless level.

Dark-matter spontaneous freeze out

We consider the possibility that thermalized dark-matter particles acquire their mass thanks to the spontaneous breaking of a symmetry below some critical temperature. We describe the regime where a freeze out mechanism takes place shortly after the onset of the phase transition, while the dark-matter mass has not yet reached its final constant value. For such a "spontaneous freeze out" to yield the correct relic density, the present-time cross section of annihilation of the dark matter into Standard-Model states has to be one or two orders of magnitude larger than in the case of a constant dark-matter mass.

Induced cosmological and Newton constants from towers of states

We consider quadratic gravity with only Ricci squared and Weyl squared kinetic terms at tree-level, coupled to specific numbers of infinite towers of free scalars, Weyl fermions and gauge bosons in four dimensions. We show that predictable cosmological and Newton constants are induced at 1-loop. This result is cross-checked using both the heat kernel method and Adler's approach.

Spontaneous Freeze Out of Dark Matter

We present a new paradigm for the production of dark-matter particles called the spontaneous freeze out, in which the decoupling from the thermal bath is enforced by the sudden increase of the dark-matter mass, due to the spontaneous breaking of some global symmetry rather than by the slow decrease of the temperature. We study the details of the spontaneous freeze out mechanism using a simple toy model and analyze the phenomenology of our scenario. We show that in order to obtain the correct relic abundance, the annihilation cross section of dark-matter particles into Standard-Model states has to be typically much larger than in the case of a constant-mass thermal dark-matter candidate. We present a string theory model in which such a scenario takes place naturally.

Induced Einstein gravity from infinite towers of states

We consider four-dimensional quadratic gravity coupled to infinite towers of free massive scalar fields, Weyl fermions and vector bosons. We find that for specific numbers of towers, finite cosmological and Newton constants are induced in the 1-loop effective action. This is derived both in Adler's approach and by using the heat kernel method, which yield identical results. If the infinite number of massive states may be regarded as Kaluza--Klein modes arising from fields in higher dimensions, there are no Kaluza--Klein states associated with the four-dimensional graviton. Hence gravity is intrinsically four-dimensional.
