Some examples of composition operators and their approximation numbers on the Hardy space of the bi-disk

We give examples of composition operators $C\_Φ$ on $H^2 (\D^2)$ showing that the condition $\|Φ\|\_\infty = 1$ is not sufficient for their approximation numbers $a\_n (C\_Φ)$ to satisfy $\lim\_{n \to \infty} [a\_n (C\_Φ) ]^{1/\sqrt{n}} = 1$, contrary to the $1$-dimensional case. We also give a situation where this implication holds. We make a link with the Monge-Ampère capacity of the image of $Φ$.

Estimate for norm of a composition operator on the Hardy-Dirichlet space

By using the Schur test, we give some upper and lower estimates on the norm of a composition operator on $\mathcal{H}^2$, the space of Dirichlet series with square summable coefficients, for the inducing symbol $φ(s)=c_1+c_{q}q^{-s}$ where $q\geq 2$ is a fixed integer. We also give an estimate on the approximation numbers of such an operator.

Approximation numbers of weighted composition operators

We study the approximation numbers of weighted composition operators $f\mapsto w\cdot(f\circφ)$ on the Hardy space $H^2$ on the unit disc. For general classes of such operators, upper and lower bounds on their approximation numbers are derived. For the special class of weighted lens map composition operators with specific weights, we show how much the weight $w$ can improve the decay rate of the approximation numbers, and give sharp upper and lower bounds. These examples are motivated from applications to the analysis of relative commutants of special inclusions of von Neumann algebras appearing in quantum field theory (Borchers triples).

Approximation numbers of composition operators on $H^p$ spaces of Dirichlet series

By a theorem of Bayart, $φ$ generates a bounded composition operator on the Hardy space $\Hp$of Dirichlet series ($1\le p<\infty$) only if $φ(s)=c_0 s+ψ(s)$, where $c_0$ is a nonnegative integer and $ψ$ a Dirichlet series with the following mapping properties: $ψ$ maps the right half-plane into the half-plane $\Real s >1/2$ if $c_0=0$ and is either identically zero or maps the right half-plane into itself if $c_0$ is positive. It is shown that the $n$th approximation numbers of bounded composition operators on $\Hp$ are bounded below by a constant times $r^n$ for some $0 0$ when $c_0$ is positive. Both results are best possible. Estimates rely on a combination of soft tools from Banach space theory ($s$-numbers, type and cotype of Banach spaces, Weyl inequalities, and Schauder bases) and a certain interpolation method for $\Ht$, developed in an earlier paper, using estimates of solutions of the $\overline{\partial}$ equation. A transference principle from $H^p$ of the unit disc is discussed, leading to explicit examples of compact composition operators on $\Ho$ with approximation numbers decaying at a variety of sub-exponential rates. Finally, a new Littlewood--Paley formula is established, yielding a sufficient condition for a composition operator on $\Hp$ to be compact.

Approximation numbers of composition operators on the $H^2$ space of Dirichlet series

By a theorem of Gordon and Hedenmalm, $φ$ generates a bounded composition operator on the Hilbert space $\mathscr{H}^2$ of Dirichlet series $\sum_n b_n n^{-s}$ with square-summable coefficients $b_n$ if and only if $φ(s)=c_0 s+ψ(s)$, where $c_0$ is a nonnegative integer and $ψ$ a Dirichlet series with the following mapping properties: $ψ$ maps the right half-plane into the half-plane $\operatorname{Re} s >1/2$ if $c_0=0$ and is either identically zero or maps the right half-plane into itself if $c_0$ is positive. It is shown that the $n$th approximation numbers of bounded composition operators on $\mathscr{H}^2$ are bounded below by a constant times $r^n$ for some $0 0$ when $c_0$ is positive. Both results are best possible. The case when $c_0=0$, $ψ$ is bounded and smooth up to the boundary of the right half-plane, and $\sup \operatorname{Re} ψ=1/2$, is discussed in depth; it includes examples of non-compact operators as well as operators belonging to all Schatten classes $S_p$. For $φ(s)=c_1+\sum_{j=1}^d c_{q_j} q_j^{-s}$ with $q_j$ independent integers, it is shown that the $n$th approximation number behaves as $n^{-(d-1)/2}$, possibly up to a factor $(\log n)^{(d-1)/2}$. Estimates rely mainly on a general Hilbert space method involving finite linear combinations of reproducing kernels. A key role is played by a recently developed interpolation method for $\mathscr{H}^2$ using estimates of solutions of the $\bar{\partial}$ equation. Finally, by a transference principle from $H^2$ of the unit disc, explicit examples of compact composition operators with approximation numbers decaying at essentially any sub-exponential rate can be displayed.

Two remarks on composition operators on the Dirichlet space

We show that the decay of approximation numbers of compact composition operators on the Dirichlet space $\mathcal{D}$ can be as slow as we wish, which was left open in the cited work. We also prove the optimality of a result of O.~El-Fallah, K.~Kellay, M.~Shabankhah and A.~Youssfi on boundedness on $\mathcal{D}$ of self-maps of the disk all of whose powers are norm-bounded in $\mathcal{D}$.

A spectral radius type formula for approximation numbers of composition operators

For approximation numbers $a_n (C_ϕ)$ of composition operators $C_ϕ$ on weighted analytic Hilbert spaces, including the Hardy, Bergman and Dirichlet cases, with symbol $ϕ$ of uniform norm $< 1$, we prove that $\lim_{n \to \infty} [a_n (C_ϕ)]^{1/n} = \e^{- 1/ \capa [ϕ(\D)]}$, where $\capa [ϕ(\D)]$ is the Green capacity of $ϕ(\D)$ in $\D$. This formula holds also for $H^p$ with $1 \leq p < \infty$.

Decay rates for approximation numbers of composition operators

A general method for estimating the approximation numbers of composition operators on $\Ht$, using finite-dimensional model subspaces, is studied and applied in the case when the symbol of the operator maps the unit disc to a domain whose boundary meets the unit circle at just one point. The exact rate of decay of the approximation numbers is identified when this map is sufficiently smooth at the point of tangency; it follows that a composition operator with any prescribed slow decay of its approximation numbers can be explicitly constructed. Similarly, an asymptotic expression for the approximation numbers is found when the mapping has a sharp cusp at the distinguished boundary point. Precise asymptotic estimates in the intermediate cases, including that of maps with a corner at the distinguished boundary point, are also established.

Approximation numbers of composition operators on the Dirichlet space

We study the decay of approximation numbers of compact composition operators on the Dirichlet space. We give upper and lower bounds for these numbers. In particular, we improve on a result of O. El-Fallah, K. Kellay, M. Shabankhah and A. Youssfi, on the set of contact points with the unit circle of a compact symbolic composition operator acting on the Dirichlet space D. We extend their results in two directions: first, the contact only takes place at the point 1. Moreover, the approximation numbers of the operator can be arbitrarily sub-exponentially small.

Compact composition operators on the Dirichlet space and capacity of sets of contact points

In this paper, we prove that for every compact set of the unit disk of logarithmic capacity 0, there exists a Schur function both in the disk algebra and in the Dirichlet space such that the associated composition operator is in all Schatten classes (of the Dirichlet space), and for which the set of points whose image touches the unit circle is equal to this compact set. We show that for every bounded composition operator on the Dirichlet space and for every point of the unit circle, the logarithmic capacity of the set of point having this point as image is 0. We show that every compact composition operator on the Dirichlet space is compact on the gaussian Hardy-Orlicz space; in particular, it is in every Schatten class on the usual Hilbertian Hardy space. On the other hand, there exists a Schur function such that the associated composition operator is compact on the gaussian Hardy-Orlicz space, but which is not even bounded on the Dirichlet space. We prove that the Schatten classes on the Dirichlet space can be separated by composition operators. Also, there exists a Schur function such that the associated composition operator is compact on the Dirichlet space, but in no Schatten class.

Infinitesimal Carleson property for weighted measures induced by analytic self-maps of the unit disk

We prove that, for every $α> -1$, the pull-back measure $ϕ({\cal A}_α)$ of the measure $d{\cal A}_α(z) = (α+ 1) (1 - |z|^2)^α\, d{\cal A} (z)$, where ${\cal A}$ is the normalized area measure on the unit disk $\D$, by every analytic self-map $ϕ\colon \D \to \D$ is not only an $(α+ 2)$-Carleson measure, but that the measure of the Carleson windows of size $\eps h$ is controlled by $\eps^{α+ 2}$ times the measure of the corresponding window of size $h$. This means that the property of being an $(α+ 2)$-Carleson measure is true at all infinitesimal scales. We give an application by characterizing the compactness of composition operators on weighted Bergman-Orlicz spaces.

Estimates for approximation numbers of some classes of composition operators on the Hardy space

We give estimates for the approximation numbers of composition operators on $H^2$, in terms of some modulus of continuity. For symbols whose image is contained in a polygon, we get that these approximation numbers are dominated by $\e^{- c \sqrt n}$. When the symbol is continuous on the closed unit disk and has a domain touching the boundary non-tangentially at a finite number of points, with a good behavior at the boundary around those points, we can improve this upper estimate. A lower estimate is given when this symbol has a good radial behavior at some point. As an application we get that, for the cusp map, the approximation numbers are equivalent, up to constants, to $\e^{- c \, n / \log n}$, very near to the minimal value $\e^{- c \, n}$. We also see the limitations of our methods. To finish, we improve a result of O. El-Fallah, K. Kellay, M. Shabankhah and H. Youssfi, in showing that for every compact set $K$ of the unit circle $\T$ with Lebesgue measure 0, there exists a compact composition operator $C_ϕ\colon H^2 \to H^2$, which is in all Schatten classes, and such that $ϕ= 1$ on $K$ and $|ϕ| < 1$ outside $K$.

Some new properties of composition operators associated with lens maps

We give examples of results on composition operators connected with lens maps. The first two concern the approximation numbers of those operators acting on the usual Hardy space $H^2$. The last ones are connected with Hardy-Orlicz and Bergman-Orlicz spaces $H^ψ$ and $B^ψ$, and provide a negative answer to the question of knowing if all composition operators which are weakly compact on a non-reflexive space are norm-compact.

On martingale approximation of adapted processes

We show that the existence of a martingale approximation of a stationary process depends on the choice of the filtration. There exists a stationary linear process which has a martingale approximation with respect to the natural filtration, but no approximation with respect to a larger filtration with respect to wich it is adapted and regular. There exists a stationary process adapted, regular, and having a martingale approximation with respect to a given filtration but not (regular and having a martingale approximation) with respect to the natural filtration.

On approximation numbers of composition operators

We show that the approximation numbers of a compact composition operator on the weighted Bergman spaces $\mathfrak{B}_α$ of the unit disk can tend to 0 arbitrarily slowly, but that they never tend quickly to 0: they grow at least exponentially, and this speed of convergence is only obtained for symbols which do not approach the unit circle. We also give an upper bounds and explicit an example.
