Spin-Orbit induced phase-shift in Bi$_{2}$Se$_{3}$ Josephson junctions

The transmission of Cooper pairs between two weakly coupled superconductors produces a superfluid current and a phase difference; the celebrated Josephson effect. Because of time-reversal and parity symmetries, there is no Josephson current without a phase difference between two superconductors. Reciprocally, when those two symmetries are broken, an anomalous supercurrent can exist in the absence of phase bias or, equivalently, an anomalous phase shift $φ_0$ can exist in the absence of a superfluid current. We report on the observation of an anomalous phase shift $φ_0$ in hybrid Josephson junctions fabricated with the topological insulator Bi$_2$Se$_3$ submitted to an in-plane magnetic field. This anomalous phase shift $φ_0$ is observed directly through measurements of the current-phase relationship in a Josephson interferometer. This result provides a direct measurement of the spin-orbit coupling strength and open new possibilities for phase-controlled Josephson devices made from materials with strong spin-orbit coupling.

Metal oxide resistive switching: evolution of the density of states across the metal-insulator transition

We report the study of metal-STO-metal memristors where the doping concentration in STO can be fine-tuned through electric field migration of oxygen vacancies. In this tunnel junction device, the evolution of the Density Of States (DoS) can be followed continuously across the Metal-Insulator Transition (MIT). At very low dopant concentration, the junction displays characteristic signatures of discrete dopants levels. As the dopant concentration increases, the semiconductor band gap fills in but a soft Coulomb gap remains. At even higher doping, a transition to a metallic state occurs where the DoS at the Fermi level becomes finite and Altshuler-Aronov corrections to the DoS are observed. At the critical point of the MIT, the DoS scales linearly with energy $N(\varepsilon) \sim \varepsilon$, the possible signature of multifractality.

Universal Heat Conduction in YBa_2Cu_3O_6.9

The thermal conductivity of YBa_2Cu_3O_6.9 was measured at low temperatures in untwinned single crystals with concentrations of Zn impurities from 0 to 3% of Cu. A linear term kappa_0/T = 0.19 mW/K^2.cm is clearly resolved as T -> 0, and found to be virtually independent of Zn concentration. The existence of this residual normal fluid strongly validates the basic theory of transport in unconventional superconductors. Moreover, the observed universal behavior is in quantitative agreement with calculations for a gap function of d-wave symmetry.
