Heterotic-Type I Dual Pairs, Rigid Branes and Broken Susy

The moduli space of toroidal type I vacua, which are consistent at the non-perturbative level, consists of independent branches characterized by the number (0, 16 or 32) of rigid branes sitting on top of orientifold planes. This structure persists also when supersymmetry is spontaneously broken a la Scherk-Schwarz. We show that all the components of the moduli space in dimension $D\ge 5$ indeed admit heterotic dual components, by explicitly constructing heterotic-type I dual pairs with the rank of the gauge group reduced by 0, 8 or 16 units. In the presence of spontaneous breaking of supersymmetry, the dual pairs we consider are also free of tachyonic instabilities at the one-loop level, provided the scale of supersymmetry breaking is lower than the string scale.

Spontaneous Freeze Out of Dark Matter From an Early Thermal Phase Transition

We propose a new paradigm for the thermal production of dark matter in the early universe, in which dark-matter particles acquire their mass and freeze out spontaneously from the thermal bath after a dark phase transition takes place. The decoupling arises because the dark-matter particles become suddenly non-relativistic and not because of any decay channel becoming kinematically close. We propose a minimal scenario in which a scalar and a fermionic dark-matter are in thermal equilibrium with the Standard-Model bath. We compute the finite temperature corrections to the scalar potential and identify a region of the parameter space where the fermionic dark-matter mass spontaneously jumps over the temperature when the dark phase transition happens. We explore the phenomenological implications of such a model in simple cases and show that the annihilation cross section of dark-matter particles has to be larger by more than one order of magnitude as compared to the usual constant-mass WIMP scenario in order to accomodate the correct relic abundance. We show that in the spontaneous freeze out regime a TeV-scale fermionic dark-matter that annihilates into leptons through s-wave processes can be accessible to detection in the near future.

Phase transition at high supersymmetry breaking scale in string theory

When supersymmetry is spontaneously broken at tree level, the spectrum of the heterotic string compactified on orbifolds of tori contains an infinite number of potentially tachyonic modes. We show that this implies instabilities of Minkowski spacetime, when the scale of supersymmetry breaking is of the order of the string scale. We derive the phase space structure of vacua in the case where the tachyonic spectrum contains a mode with trivial momenta and winding numbers along the internal directions not involved in the supersymmetry breaking.

Hagedorn-like transition at high supersymmetry breaking scale

We consider phase transitions occurring in four-dimensional heterotic orbifold models, when the scale of spontaneous breaking of N=1 supersymmetry is of the order of the string scale. The super-Higgs mechanism is implemented by imposing distinct boundary conditions for bosons and fermions along an internal circle of radius R. Depending on the orbifold action, the usual scalars becoming tachyonic when R falls below the Hagedorn radius may or may not be projected out of the spectrum. In all cases, infinitely many other scalars, which are pure Kaluza-Klein or pure winding states along other internal directions, become tachyonic in subregions in moduli space. We derive the off-shell tree level effective potential that takes into account these potentially tachyonic modes. We show that when a combination of the usual tachyons survives the orbifold action, it is the only degree of freedom that actually condenses.

Quantum stability in open string theory with broken supersymmetry

We consider the 1-loop effective potential in type I string theory compactified on a torus, with supersymmetry broken by the Scherk-Schwarz mechanism. At fixed supersymmetry breaking scale M, and up to exponentially suppressed terms, we show that the potential admits local minima of arbitrary sign, in dimension d<=5. While the open string Wilson lines are massive, the closed string moduli are flat directions. In a T-dual picture, the relevant backgrounds involve isolated 1/2-branes, whose positions are frozen on orientifold planes, thus decreasing the rank of the gauge group, and introducing massless fermions in fundamental representations.

The Casimir effect in string theory

We discuss the Casimir effect in heterotic string theory. This is done by considering a Z_2 twist acting on one external compact direction and three internal coordinates. The hyperplanes fixed by the orbifold generator G realize the two infinite parallel plates. For the latter to behave as "conducting material", we implement in a modular invariant way the projection (1-G)/2 on the spectrum running in the vacuum-to-vacuum amplitude at one-loop. Hence, the relevant projector to account for the Casimir effect is orthogonal to that commonly used in string orbifold models, which is (1+G)/2. We find that this setup yields the same net force acting on the plates in the context of quantum field theory and string theory. However, when supersymmetry is not present from the onset, finiteness of the resultant force in field theory is reached by adding formally infinite forces acting on either side of each plate, while in string theory both contributions are finite. On the contrary, when supersymmetry is spontaneously broken a la Scherk-Schwarz, finiteness of each contribution is fulfilled in field and string theory.

Spontaneous dark-matter mass generation along cosmological attractors in string theory

We propose a new scenario for generating a relic density of non-relativistic dark matter in the context of heterotic string theory. Contrary to standard thermal freeze-out scenarios, dark-matter particles are abundantly produced while still relativistic, and then decouple from the thermal bath due to the sudden increase of their mass above the universe temperature. This mass variation is sourced by the condensation of an order-parameter modulus, which is triggered when the temperature T(t) drops below the supersymmetry breaking scale M(t), which are both time-dependent. A cosmological attractor mechanism forces this phase transition to take place, in an explicit class of heterotic string models with spontaneously broken supersymmetry, and at finite temperature.

Stability and vacuum energy in open string models with broken supersymmetry

We construct type I string models with supersymmetry broken by compactification that are non-tachyonic and have exponentially small effective potential at one-loop. All open string moduli can be stabilized, while the closed string moduli remain massless at one-loop. The backgrounds of interest have rigid Wilson lines by the use of stacked branes, and some models should have heterotic duals. We also present non-tachyonic backgrounds with positive potentials of runaway type at one-loop. This class of models could be used to test various swampland conjectures.

Quantum no-scale regimes and string moduli

We review that in perturbative string theory, flat, homogeneous and isotropic cosmological evolutions found in no-scale models at the quantum level can enter into "quantum no-scale regimes" (QNSRs). When this is the case, the quantum effective potential is dominated by the classical kinetic energies of the no-scale modulus, dilaton and moduli not involved in the supersymmetry breaking. As a result, the evolutions approach the classical ones, where the no-scale structure is exact. When the 1-loop potential is positive, a global attractor mechanism forces the initially expanding solutions to enter the QNSR describing a flat, ever-expanding universe. On the contrary, when the potential can reach negative values, the internal moduli induce in most cases some kind of instability of the growing universe. The latter stops expanding and eventually collapses, unless the initial conditions are tuned in a tiny region of the phase space. Finally, in QNSR, no gauge instability takes place, regardless of the details of the potential.

Quantum no-scale regimes and moduli dynamics

We analyze quantum no-scale regimes (QNSR) in perturbative heterotic string compactified on tori, with total spontaneous breaking of supersymmetry. We show that for marginal deformations initially at any point in moduli space, the dynamics of a flat, homogeneous and isotropic universe can always be attracted to a QNSR. This happens independently of the characteristics of the 1-loop effective potential $V_{1-loop}$, which can be initially positive, negative or vanishing, and maximal, minimal or at a saddle point. In all cases, the classical no-scale structure is restored at the quantum level, during the cosmological evolution. This is shown analytically by considering moduli evolutions entirely in the vicinity of their initial values. Global attractor mechanisms are analyzed numerically and depend drastically on the sign of $V_{1-loop}$. We find that all initially expanding cosmological evolutions along which $V_{1-loop}$ is positive are attracted to the QNSR describing a flat, ever-expanding universe. On the contrary, when $V_{1-loop}$ can reach negative values, the expansion comes to a halt and the universe eventually collapses into a Big Crunch, unless the initial conditions are tuned in a tiny region of the phase space. This suggests that flat, ever-expanding universes with positive potentials are way more natural than their counterparts with negative potentials.

Quantum no-scale regimes in string theory

We show that in generic no-scale models in string theory, the flat, expanding cosmological evolutions found at the quantum level can be attracted to a "quantum no-scale regime", where the no-scale structure is restored asymptotically. In this regime, the quantum effective potential is dominated by the classical kinetic energies of the no-scale modulus and dilaton. We find that this natural preservation of the classical no-scale structure at the quantum level occurs when the initial conditions of the evolutions sit in a subcritical region of their space. On the contrary, supercritical initial conditions yield solutions that have no analogue at the classical level. The associated intrinsically quantum universes are sentenced to collapse and their histories last finite cosmic times. Our analysis is done at 1-loop, in perturbative heterotic string compactified on tori, with spontaneous supersymmetry breaking implemented by a stringy version of the Scherk-Schwarz mechanism.

N=2 -> 0 super no-scale models and moduli quantum stability

We consider a class of heterotic N=2 -> 0 super no-scale Z_2-orbifold models. An appropriate stringy Scherk-Schwarz supersymmetry breaking induces tree level masses to all massless bosons of the twisted hypermultiplets and therefore stabilizes all twisted moduli. At high supersymmetry breaking scale, the tachyons that occur in the N=4 -> 0 parent theories are projected out, and no Hagedorn-like instability takes place in the N=2 -> 0 models (for small enough marginal deformations). At low supersymmetry breaking scale, the stability of the untwisted moduli is studied at the quantum level by taking into account both untwisted and twisted contributions to the 1-loop effective potential. The latter depends on the specific branch of the gauge theory along which the background can be deformed. We derive its expression in terms of all classical marginal deformations in the pure Coulomb phase, and in some mixed Coulomb/Higgs phases. In this class of models, the super no-scale condition requires having at the massless level equal numbers of untwisted bosonic and twisted fermionic degrees of freedom. Finally, we show that N=1 -> 0 super no-scale models are obtained by implementing a second Z_2 orbifold twist on N=2 -> 0 super no-scale Z_2-orbifold models.

Super no-scale models in string theory

We consider "super no-scale models" in the framework of the heterotic string, where the N=4,2,1 --> 0 spontaneous breaking of supersymmetry is induced by geometrical fluxes realizing a stringy Scherk-Schwarz perturbative mechanism. Classically, these backgrounds are characterized by a boson/fermion degeneracy at the massless level, even if supersymmetry is broken. At the 1-loop level, the vacuum energy is exponentially suppressed, provided the supersymmetry breaking scale is small, m_{3/2} << M_{string}. We show that the "super no-scale string models" under consideration are free of Hagedorn-like tachyonic singularities, even when the supersymmetry breaking scale is large, m_{3/2} ~ M_{string}. The vacuum energy decreases monotonically and converges exponentially to zero, when m_{3/2} varies from M_{string} to 0. We also show that all Wilson lines associated to asymptotically free gauge symmetries are dynamically stabilized by the 1-loop effective potential, while those corresponding to non-asymtotically free gauge groups lead to instabilities and condense. The Wilson lines of the conformal gauge symmetries remain massless. When stable, the stringy super no-scale models admit low energy effective actions, where decoupling gravity yields theories in flat spacetime, with softly broken supersymmetry.

Large volume supersymmetry breaking without decompactification problem

We consider heterotic string backgrounds in four-dimensional Minkowski space, where N=1 supersymmetry is spontaneously broken at a low scale m_{3/2} by a stringy Scherk-Schwarz mechanism. We review how the effective gauge couplings at 1-loop may evade the "decompactification problem", namely the proportionality of the gauge threshold corrections, with the large volume of the compact space involved in the supersymmetry breaking.

Stringy N = 1 super no-scale models

N=1 no-scale models describe at tree level the spontaneous breaking of supersymmetry at an arbitrary scale m_{3/2}, with vanishing vacuum energy. We define N=1 super no-scale models in string theory as being those, which maintain these properties at 1-loop. In other words, in super no-scale models, m_{3/2} is a flat direction of a positive semi-definite 1-loop effective potential. We find explicit examples in heterotic Z_2 x Z_2 orbifold models, where N=1 is spontaneously broken by a stringy Scherk-Schwarz mechanism, and where the "decompactification problem" does not arise.

Large volume susy breaking with a solution to the decompactification problem

We study heterotic ground states in which supersymmetry is broken by coupling the momentum and winding charges of two large extra dimensions to the R-charges of the supersymmetry generators. The large dimensions give rise to towers of heavy string thresholds that contribute to the running of the gauge couplings. In the general case, these contributions are proportional to the volume of the two large dimensions and invalidate the perturbative string expansion. The problem is evaded if the susy breaking sectors arise as a spontaneously broken phase of N=4 -> N=2 -> N=0 supersymmetry, provided that N=4 supersymmetry is restored on the boundary of the moduli space. We discuss the mechanism in the case of Z_2 x Z_2 orbifolds, which requires that the twisted sector that contains the large extra dimensions has no fixed points. We analyse the full string partition function and show that the twisted sectors distribute themselves in non-aligned N=2 orbits, hence preserving the solution to the string decompactification problem. Remarkably, we find that the contribution to the vacuum energy from the N=2 -> N=0 sectors is suppressed, and the only substantial contribution arises from the breaking of the N=4 sector to N=0.

Cosmological Perturbations Across an S-brane

Space-filling S-branes can mediate a transition between a contracting and an expanding universe in the Einstein frame. Following up on previous work that uncovered such bouncing solutions in the context of weakly coupled thermal configurations of a certain class of type II superstrings, we set up here the formalism in which we can study the evolution of metric fluctuations across such an S-brane. Our work shows that the specific nature of the S-brane, which is sourced by non-trivial massless thermal string states and appears when the universe reaches a maximal critical temperature, allows for a scale invariant spectrum of curvature fluctuations to manifest at late times via a stringy realization of the matter bounce scenario. The finite energy density at the transition from contraction to expansion provides calculational control over the propagation of the curvature perturbations through the bounce, furnishing a working proof of concept that such a stringy universe can result in viable late time cosmology.

On The Real Part of a Conformal Field Theory

Every conformal field theory has the symmetry of taking each field to its adjoint. We consider here the quotient (orbifold) conformal field theory obtained by twisting with respect to this symmetry. A general method for computing such quotients is developed using the coulomb gas representation. Examples of parafermions, $SU(2)$ current algebra and the $N=2$ minimal models are described explicitly. The partition functions and the dimensions of the disordered fields are given. This result is a tool for finding new theories.
