Cocycles with Quasi-Conformality I: Stability and abundance

This is the first part of a series of papers devoted to the study of linear cocycles over chaotic systems. In the present paper, we establish the existence of such cocycles that $\mathcal{C}^α$-stably exhibit fiberwise bounded orbits ($α>0$). The proof is based on a new mechanism which yields stable elliptic-type behavior in $\mathrm{GL}(d,\mathbb{R})$ or $\mathrm{SL}(d,\mathbb{R})$ cocycles. Moreover, we show that this phenomenon is $\mathcal{C}^0$-dense among $\mathrm{SL}(d,\mathbb{R})$ cocycles over a shift of finite type without dominated splitting.

Cocycles with Quasi-Conformality II: Ergodic measures with positive entropy

As the second part of a series on linear cocycles over chaotic systems, this paper establishes a "multiple covering principle" that robustly yields positive-entropy ergodic measures supported on fiberwise uniformly bounded orbits. Using this mechanism, we prove that any continuous $\mathrm{SL}(d,\mathbb{R})$ cocycle over a positive-entropy subshift of finite type either admits a dominated splitting or can be $\mathcal{C}^0$-approximated by one that \emph{stably} supports such measures. The stability holds in Hölder topology which is optimal. Additionally, for non-isometric cocycles, we show that the topological entropy of these bounded orbits is strictly less than that of the base subshift.

Twisted cocycle for interval exchange transformations: Invariant structures and Lyapunov spectrum

This paper investigates the algebraic and dynamical properties of the twisted cocycle, a $\mathrm{GL}(d, \mathbb{C})$-valued cocycle defined over the toral extension of the Zorich (Rauzy-Veech) renormalization for interval exchange transformations (IET). As a natural generalization of the Zorich cocycle, the twisted cocycle plays a central role in studying the asymptotic growth of twisted Birkhoff sums which in turn provide a suitable tool for obtaining fine spectral information about IETs and translation flows such as the local dimension of spectral measures and quantitative weak mixing. Although it shares similarities with the classical (untwisted) Zorich cocycle, structural differences make its analysis more challenging. Our results yield a block-form decomposition into invariant and covariant subbundles allowing us to demonstrate the existence of $κ+1$ zero exponents with respect to a large class of natural invariant measures where $κ$ is an explicit integer depending on the permutation. We establish the symmetry of the Lyapunov spectrum by showing the existence of a family of non-degenerate invariant symplectic forms. As a corollary, we prove that for rotation-type permutations, the twisted cocycle has a degenerate Lyapunov spectrum with respect to certain natural ergodic invariant measures in contrast with the higher genus case where the existence of at least one positive Lyapunov exponent is guaranteed by previous work of the authors. In the appendix, we apply our result about the invariant section to substitution systems and prove the pure singularity of the spectrum for a substantially large class of substitutions on two letters, while greatly simplifying the proof for some systems previously known to have this property.

Stable local dynamics: expansion, quasi-conformality and ergodicity

In this paper, we study stable ergodicity of the action of groups of diffeomorphisms on smooth manifolds. Such actions are known to exist only on one-dimensional manifolds. The aim of this paper is to introduce a geometric method to overcome this restriction and to construct higher dimensional examples. In particular, we show that every closed manifold admits stably ergodic finitely generated group actions by diffeomorphisms of class $C^{1+α}$. We also prove the stable ergodicity of certain algebraic actions, including the natural action of a generic pair of matrices near the identity on a sphere of arbitrary dimension. These are consequences of the quasi-conformal blender, a local and stable mechanism/phenomenon introduced in this paper, which encapsulates our method for proving stable local ergodicity by providing quasi-conformal orbits with fine controlled geometry. The quasi-conformal blender is developed in the context of pseudo-semigroup actions of locally defined smooth diffeomorphisms, which allows for applications in diverse settings.

Nondegeneracy of the spectrum of the twisted cocycle for interval exchange transformations

We prove the positivity of the top Lyapunov exponent of the twisted (spectral) cocycle, associated with IETs, with respect to a family of natural invariant measures. The proof relies on relating the top exponent to limits of exponents along families of affine invariant submanifolds of genus tending to infinity. Applications include an observation about a conjecture of Kontsevich and Zorich, a discrepancy estimate, and a formula for the lower local dimension of spectral measures.
