MuGrid-v2: A novel scintillator detector for multidisciplinary applications

Muography, traditionally recognized as a potent instrument for imaging the internal structure of gigantic objects, has initialized various interdisciplinary applications. As the financial and labor costs of muography detector development hinder their massive applications, we develop a novel muon detector called MuGrid by coupling a monolithic plastic scintillator with the light guide array in order to achieve competitive spatial resolution while substantially reducing production costs. For a prototype detector in 30 cm $\times$ 30 cm, the intrinsic spatial resolution has been optimized toward a millimeter scale. An outdoor field muography experiment was conducted to monitor two buildings for validation purposes. The test successfully resolved the geometric influence of architectural features based on the attenuation of muon flux in a good agreement between experimental results and the simulation prediction.

Development of portable cosmic-ray muon detector array for muography

As the multidisciplinary applications of cosmic-ray muons expand to large-scale and wide-area scenarios, the construction of cosmic-ray muon detector arrays has become a key solution to overcome the hardware limitations of individual detector. For muography, the array-based detector design enables fast-scanning of large target objects, allowing for rapid identification of density variation regions, which can improve the efficiency of tomography. This paper integrates scintillator detector technology with Internet of things (IoT) technology, proposing a novel array networking model for nationwide deployment. The model enables long-distance data collection and distribution, laying the foundation for future multidisciplinary applications such as muography and other fields.

SUGAR: Spherical Ultrafast Graph Attention Framework for Cortical Surface Registration

Cortical surface registration plays a crucial role in aligning cortical functional and anatomical features across individuals. However, conventional registration algorithms are computationally inefficient. Recently, learning-based registration algorithms have emerged as a promising solution, significantly improving processing efficiency. Nonetheless, there remains a gap in the development of a learning-based method that exceeds the state-of-the-art conventional methods simultaneously in computational efficiency, registration accuracy, and distortion control, despite the theoretically greater representational capabilities of deep learning approaches. To address the challenge, we present SUGAR, a unified unsupervised deep-learning framework for both rigid and non-rigid registration. SUGAR incorporates a U-Net-based spherical graph attention network and leverages the Euler angle representation for deformation. In addition to the similarity loss, we introduce fold and multiple distortion losses, to preserve topology and minimize various types of distortions. Furthermore, we propose a data augmentation strategy specifically tailored for spherical surface registration, enhancing the registration performance. Through extensive evaluation involving over 10,000 scans from 7 diverse datasets, we showed that our framework exhibits comparable or superior registration performance in accuracy, distortion, and test-retest reliability compared to conventional and learning-based methods. Additionally, SUGAR achieves remarkable sub-second processing times, offering a notable speed-up of approximately 12,000 times in registering 9,000 subjects from the UK Biobank dataset in just 32 minutes. This combination of high registration performance and accelerated processing time may greatly benefit large-scale neuroimaging studies.

The Optimization of the Constant Flow Parallel Micropump Using RBF Neural Network

The objective of this work is to optimize the performance of a constant flow parallel mechanical displacement micropump, which has parallel pump chambers and incorporates passive check valves. The critical task is to minimize the pressure pulse caused by regurgitation, which negatively impacts the constant flow rate, during the reciprocating motion when the left and right pumps interchange their role of aspiration and transfusion. Previous works attempt to solve this issue via the mechanical design of passive check valves. In this work, the novel concept of overlap time is proposed, and the issue is solved from the aspect of control theory by implementing a RBF neural network trained by both unsupervised and supervised learning. The experimental results indicate that the pressure pulse is optimized in the range of 0.15 - 0.25 MPa, which is a significant improvement compared to the maximum pump working pressure of 40 MPa.
