Existence and dynamics of normalized solutions to nonlinear Schrödinger equations with mixed fractional Laplacians

In this paper, we are concerned with the existence and dynamics of solutions to the equation with mixed fractional Laplacians $$ (-Δ)^{s_1} u +(-Δ)^{s_2} u + λu=|u|^{p-2} u $$ under the constraint $$ \int_{\R^N} |u|^2 \, dx=c>0, $$ where $N \geq 1$, $0 2s_1$, $λ\in \R$ appearing as Lagrange multiplier is unknown. The fractional Laplacian $(-Δ)^s$ is characterized as $\mathcal{F}((-Δ)^{s}u)(ξ)=|ξ|^{2s} \mathcal{F}(u)(ξ)$ for $ξ\in \R^N$, where $\mathcal{F}$ denotes the Fourier transform. First we establish the existence of ground state solutions and the multiplicity of bound state solutions. Then we study dynamics of solutions to the Cauchy problem for the associated time-dependent equation. Moreover, we establish orbital instability of ground state solutions.

Normalized Solutions to the mixed fractional Schrodinger equations with potential and general nonlinear term

The purpose of this paper is to establish the existence of solutions with prescribed norm to a class of nonlinear equations involving the mixed fractional Laplacians. This type of equations arises in various fields ranging from biophysics to population dynamics. Due to the importance of these applications, this topic has very recently received an increasing interest. Our method is novel and our results cover all the previous ones.

Infinitely many positive solutions of a Gross-Pitaevskii equation in the presence of a harmonic potential and combined nonlinearities

The main goal of this paper is to address an important conjecture in the field of differential equations in the presence of a harmonic potential. While in the subcritical case, the uniqueness of positive solution has been addressed by Hirose and Ohta in 2007, the problem has remained open for years in the supercritical case. In Hadj Selem et al., the authors obtained interesting numerical computations suggesting that for some bifurcating parameter $λ$, the equation has many positive solutions that vanish at infinity. In this paper, we provide a proof to this claim by constructing an accountable number of solutions that bifurcate from the unique singular solutions with $λ$ close to the first eigenvalue $λ_1$ of the harmonic operator $-Δ+ |x|^2$. Our method hinges on a matching argument, and applies to the supercritical case, and to the supercritical case in the presence of a subcritical, critical or supercritical perturbation.

Qualitative properties of solutions to semilinear elliptic equations from the gravitational Maxwell Gauged O(3) Sigma model

This article is devoted to the study of the following semilinear equation with measure data which originates in the gravitational Maxwell gauged $O(3)$ sigma model, $$-Δu + A_0(\prod^k_{j=1}|x-p_j|^{2n_j} )^{-a} \frac{e^u}{(1+e^u)^{1+a}} = 4π\sum_{j=1}^k n_jδ_{p_j} - 4π\sum^l_{j=1}m_jδ_{q_j} \quad{\rm in}\;\; \mathbb{R}^2.\qquad(E)$$ In this equation the $\{δ_{p_j}\}_{j=1}^k$ (resp. $\{δ_{q_j}\}_{j=1}^l$ ) are Dirac masses concentrated at the points $\{p_j\}_{j=1}^k$, (resp. $\{q_j\}_{j=1}^l$), $n_j$ and $m_j$ are positive integers, and $a$ is a nonnegative real number. We set $ N=\sum^k_{j=1}n_j $ and $M= \sum^l_{j=1}m_j$. In previous works \cite{C,Y2}, some qualitative properties of solutions of $(E)$ with $a=0$ have been established. Our aim in this article is to study the more general case where $a>0$. The additional difficulties of this case come from the fact that the nonlinearity is no longer monotone and the data are signed measures. As a consequence we cannot anymore construct directly the solutions by the monotonicity method combined with the supersolutions and subsolutions technique. Instead we develop a new and self-contained approach which enables us to emphasize the role played by the gravitation in the gauged $O(3)$ sigma model. Without the gravitational term, i.e. if $a=0$, problem $(E)$ has a layer's structure of solutions $\{u_β\}_{β\in(-2(N-M),\, -2]}$, where $u_β$ is the unique non-topological solution such that $u_β=β\ln |x|+O(1)$ for $-2(N-M)<β<-2$ and $u_{-2}=-2\ln |x|-2\ln\ln |x|+O(1)$ at infinity respectively. On the contrary, when $a>0$, the set of solutions to problem $(E)$ has a much richer structure: besides the topological solutions, there exists a sequence of non-topological solutions in type I, i.e. such that $u $ tends to $-\infty$ at infinity, and of non-topological solutions of type II, which tend to $\infty$ at infinity. The existence of these types of solutions depends on the values of the parameters $N,\, M,\, β$ and on the gravitational interaction associated to $a$.

On the instability of the Ruf-Sani solitons for the NLS with exponential nonlinearity

We study the two dimensional non-linear Schrödinger equation with two types of exponential non-linearities. It is well-known by a work of Ruf - Sani, that such models support solitary wave solutions, which are solutions of some constrained minimization problem. We show that these Ruf - Sani solitons, are spectrally unstable as well as unstable by blow-up.

Mass-Energy threshold dynamics for dipolar Quantum Gases

We consider a Gross-Pitaevskii equation which appears as a model in the description of dipolar Bose-Einstein condensates, without a confining external trapping potential. We describe the asymptotic dynamics of solutions to the corresponding Cauchy problem in the energy space in different configurations with respect to the mass-energy threshold, namely for initial data above and at the mass-energy threshold. We first establish a scattering criterion for the equation that we prove by means of the concentration/compactness and rigidity scheme. This criterion enables us to show the energy scattering for solutions with data above the mass-energy threshold, for which only blow-up was known. We also prove a blow-up/grow-up criterion for the equation with general data in the energy space. As a byproduct of scattering and blow-up criteria, and the compactness of minimizing sequences for the Gagliardo-Nirenberg's inequality, we study long time dynamics of solutions with data lying exactly at the mass-energy threshold.

Global well-posedness, blow-up and stability of standing waves for supercritical NLS with rotation

We consider the focusing mass supercritical nonlinear Schrödinger equation with rotation \begin{equation*} iu_{t}=-\frac{1}{2}Δu+\frac{1}{2}V(x)u-|u|^{p-1}u+L_Ωu,\quad (x,t)\in \mathbb{R}^{N}\times\mathbb{R}, \end{equation*} where $N=2$ or $3$ and $V(x)$ is an anisotropic harmonic potential. Here $L_Ω$ is the quantum mechanical angular momentum operator. We establish conditions for global existence and blow-up in the energy space. Moreover, we prove strong instability of standing waves under certain conditions on the rotation and the frequency of the wave. Finally, we construct orbitally stable standing waves solutions by considering a suitable local minimization problem. Those results are obtained for nonlinearities which are $L^{2}$-supercritical.

On stability of rotational 2D binary Bose-Einstein condensates

We consider a two-dimensional nonlinear Schr{ö}dinger equation proposed in Physics to model rotational binary Bose-Einstein condensates. The nonlinearity is a logarithmic modification of the usual cubic nonlinearity. The presence of both the external confining potential and rotating frame makes it difficult to apply standard techniques to directly construct ground states, as we explain in an appendix. The goal of the present paper is to analyze the orbital stability of the set of energy minimizers under mass constraint, according to the relative strength of the confining potential compared to the angular frequency. The main novelty concerns the critical case (lowest Landau Level) where these two effects compensate exactly, and orbital stability is established by using techniques related to magnetic Schr{ö}dinger operators.

On a Fractional Schrödinger equation in the presence of Harmonic potential

In this paper, we establish the existence of ground state solutions for a fractional Schrödinger equation in the presence of a harmonic trapping potential. We also address the orbital stability of standing waves. Additionally, we provide interesting numerical results about the dynamics and compare them with other types of Schrödinger equations. Our results explain the effect of each term of the Schrödinger equation : The fractional power, the power of the nonlinearity and the harmonic potential.

Ground State Solutions of the Complex Gross Pitaevskii Equation Associated to Exciton-Polariton Bose-Einstein Condensates

We investigate the existence of ground state solutions of a Gross-Pitaevskii equation modeling the dynamics of pumped Bose Einstein condensates (BEC). The main interest in such BEC comes from its important nature as macroscopic quantum system, constituting an excellent alternative to the classical condensates which are hard to realize because of the very low temperature required. Nevertheless, the Gross Pitaevskii equation governing the new condensates presents some mathematical challenges due to the presence of the pumping and damping terms. Following a self-contained approach, we prove the existence of ground state solutions of this equation under suitable assumptions: This is equivalent to say that condensation occurs in these situations. We also solve the Cauchy problem of the nonlinear Schroedinger equation and prove some corresponding laws.

Multiple solutions for a class of nonhomogeneous fractional Schrödinger equations in $\mathbb{R}^{N}$

This paper is concerned with the following fractional Schrödinger equation \begin{equation*} \left\{ \begin{array}{ll} (-Δ)^{s} u+u= k(x)f(u)+h(x) \mbox{ in } \mathbb{R}^{N}\\ u\in H^{s}(\R^{N}), \, u>0 \mbox{ in } \mathbb{R}^{N}, \end{array} \right. \end{equation*} where $s\in (0,1)$, $N> 2s$, $(-Δ)^{s}$ is the fractional Laplacian, $k$ is a bounded positive function, $h\in L^{2}(\mathbb{R}^{N})$, $h\not \equiv 0$ is nonnegative and $f$ is either asymptotically linear or superlinear at infinity.\\ By using the $s$-harmonic extension technique and suitable variational methods, we prove the existence of at least two positive solutions for the problem under consideration, provided that $|h|_{2}$ is sufficiently small.

The virial theorem and ground state energy estimate of nonlinear Schrödinger equations in $\mathbb{R}^2$ with square root and saturable nonlinearities in nonlinear optics

The virial theorem is a nice property for the linear Schrodinger equation in atomic and molecular physics as it gives an elegant ratio between the kinetic and potential energies and is useful in assessing the quality of numerically computed eigenvalues. If the governing equation is a nonlinear Schrodinger equation with power-law nonlinearity, then a similar ratio can be obtained but there seems no way of getting any eigenvalue estimate. It is surprising as far as we are concerned that when the nonlinearity is either square-root or saturable nonlinearity (not a power-law), one can develop a virial theorem and eigenvalue estimate of nonlinear Schrodinger (NLS) equations in R2 with square-root and saturable nonlinearity, respectively. Furthermore, we show here that the eigenvalue estimate can be used to obtain the 2nd order term (which is of order $lnΓ$) of the lower bound of the ground state energy as the coefficient $Γ$ of the nonlinear term tends to infinity.
