Symmetric Mass Generation for Domain-Wall Fermions

We report the first numerical examination of symmetric mass generation (SMG) for domain-wall fermions. Our simulation on a two-dimensional Euclidean lattice computes the path-integral of the Fidkowski-Kitaev Majorana chain with two boundaries, corresponding to the two (physical and mirror) walls. We demonstrate by evaluating the lattice Dirac operator eigenvalue spectrum that the local four-Fermi interaction selectively gaps the edge fermions on the mirror wall while leaving the physical wall intact. We further identify a characteristic signature of SMG in the path-integral: the gap of the Dirac operator opens along the imaginary axis of the complex spectrum, in contrast to the standard mass shift in the real direction. The conventional hybrid Monte Carlo algorithm remains practical with reweighting the complex phase of the Pfaffian, which is found to be remarkably small throughout the simulation. These results provide a practical nonperturbative framework for interaction-induced mirror-fermion decoupling of lattice domain-wall fermions.

Reply to "Comment on "Chiral symmetry restoration, the eigenvalue density of the Dirac operator, and the axial U(1) anomaly at finite temperature""

We respond to the comment by Matteo Giordano [1] on our article [2]. We find -- and [1] itself acknowledges -- that the proposed counterexamples intended to refute our argument violate a crucial assumption of QCD at high temperatures, namely that every gluonic observable is an analytic function of the squared quark mass, $m^2$. We further point out a technical mistake found in [1]. We conclude that the arguments presented in [1] are not valid.

Quark Number Susceptibilities and Conserved Charge Fluctuations in $(2+1)$-flavor QCD with Möbius domain-wall fermions (MDWF)

We calculate second- and selected fourth-order conserved-charge fluctuations in $(2+1)$-flavor QCD using Möbius domain-wall fermions (MDWF) along a line of constant physics. Gauge ensembles were generated for two light-to-strange quark-mass ratios, $m_l/m_s=1/10$ and $1/27.4$, corresponding to heavier-than-physical and physical pion masses, respectively. For $m_l/m_s=1/10$, calculations were carried out on lattices with temporal extents $N_τ=12$ and $16$, enabling an assessment of lattice-spacing effects at heavier pion mass. For $m_l/m_s=1/27.4$, calculations were performed at $N_τ=12$, allowing us to study the light-quark-mass dependence down to the physical point. Below the pseudocritical temperature, second-order electric-charge, strangeness, and off-diagonal conserved-charge fluctuations are consistent with QMHRG2020 hadron resonance gas calculations. Across the crossover region, these observables rise rapidly and tend toward their Stefan--Boltzmann limits. Selected fourth-order cumulants were also computed at the physical pion mass. Although these observables are statistically more demanding, several channels with controlled uncertainties permit a first comparison with hadron resonance gas calculations.

Capturing the Atiyah-Patodi-Singer index from the lattice

We construct a formulation of the Atiyah-Patodi-Singer index of Dirac operators in lattice gauge theory for domains with compact boundaries in a flat torus. The key idea is to exploit its equality to the spectral flow of the domain-wall fermion Dirac operators, which we generalize in this work to cases without product structure near the boundary. We prove that, for sufficiently small lattice spacings, this formulation correctly captures the continuum Atiyah-Patodi-Singer index.

Topological susceptibility and QCD phase transition with 2+1 flavor Möbius domain wall fermion at finite temperature

The topological susceptibility is one of the quantities that has a large discretization error, and the error can be sensitive to the choice of fermion action. We report on our results from physical point simulations with 2+1 flavor Möbius domain wall fermion at finite temperature. We also present the chiral condensate and disconnected susceptibility. The temporal lattice size is Nt=12 and 16, and the temperature range is around 140 MeV to 250 MeV for the chiral condensate and susceptibility. A coarse lattice with Nt = 10 covers up to 500 MeV to measure the topological susceptibility.

How to formulate the $\mathbb{Z}_8$ topological invariant of Majorana fermion on the lattice

Topological invariants and their associated anomalies have played a crucial role in understanding low-energy phenomena in quantum field theories. In lattice gauge theory, the standard $\mathbb{Z}$-valued Atiyah-Singer index is formulated via the overlap Dirac operator through the Ginsparg-Wilson relation, but extensions to more general topological invariants have remained limited. In this work, we propose a lattice formulation of the Arf-Brown-Kervaire (ABK) invariant, which takes values in $\mathbb{Z}_8$. The ABK invariant arises in Majorana fermion partition functions with reflection symmetry on two-dimensional non-oriented manifolds, and its definition involves an infinite sum over Dirac eigenvalues that must be properly regularized. By carefully treating the boundary conditions, with and without a domain-wall mass term, we demonstrate that the ABK invariant can be extracted from Pfaffians of the Wilson Dirac operator. We further provide numerical verification on two-dimensional lattices, showing that the $\mathbb{Z}_8$-valued results on the torus, Klein bottle, real projective plane, and Möbius strip agree with those in the continuum theory.

Generalization of lattice Dirac operator index

We provide a comprehensive lattice formulation of various types of the Dirac operator indices, employing $K$-theory to classify the Wilson Dirac operator via its spectral flow. In contrast to the index of the overlap Dirac operator defined through the Ginsparg-Wilson relation, which is restricted to flat tori in even dimensions, our formulation offers several key advantages: 1) It can be applied straightforwardly to the Atiyah-Patodi-Singer index for manifolds with boundary. 2) The boundary can be curved, allowing for the inclusion of gravitational background effects. 3) The mod-2 index in both even and odd dimensions can be defined as a natural extension of the same formulation. In this talk, we present the mathematical proof and provide numerical evidence supporting the formulation.

Time-reversal invariant vortex in topological superconductors and gravitational $\mathbb{Z}_2$ topology

We study a time-reversal invariant vortex, namely a spin vortex, in helical superconductors by focusing on its emergent gravitational structure. The topology of the time-reversal invariant vortex is classified by a $\mathbb{Z}_2$ invariant: helical Majorana zero modes appear at the vortex core when the winding number is odd, while no such zero modes exist when it is even. We provide a formal mapping to the theory of gravity to describe this $\mathbb{Z}_2$ topological structure. Identifying a superconducting order parameter as a vielbein in the theory of gravity, we explicitly convert the Bogoliubov-de-Genne Hamiltonian into the Dirac Hamiltonian coupled to a nontrivial gravitational field. Then we find that a gravitational curvature is induced at the vortex core, with its total flux quantized in integer multiples of $π$, reflecting the $\mathbb{Z}_2$ topology. Although the curvature vanishes everywhere except at the vortex core, the energy spectrum remains sensitive to the total curvature flux, owing to the gravitational Aharonov-Bohm effect. We further demonstrate that our gravitational framework can be applied to the topological phase transition driven by the vortex-linking precess in three-dimensional helical superconductors such as the He-B phase.

The Arf-Brown-Kervaire invariant on a lattice

We propose a lattice formulation of the Arf-Brown-Kervaire (ABK) invariant which takes values in $\mathbb{Z}_8$. Compared to the standard $\mathbb{Z}$-valued index, the ABK invariant is more involved in that it arises in Majorana fermion partition functions with reflection symmetry on two-dimensional non-orientable manifolds, and its definition contains an infinite sum over Dirac eigenvalues that requires proper regularization. We employ the massive Wilson Dirac operator, with and without domain-walls, on standard two-dimensional square lattices, and use its Pfaffian for the definition. Twisted boundary conditions and cross-caps, which reverse the orientation, are introduced to realize nontrivial topologies equipped with nontrivial $\mathrm{Pin}^{-}$ structures of Majorana fermions. We verify numerically (and partly analytically) that our formulation on a torus, Klein bottle, real projective plane (as well as its triple connected sum), and two types of Möbius strip reproduces the known values in continuum theory.

$K$-theoretic computation of the Atiyah(-Patodi)-Singer index of lattice Dirac operators

We show that the Wilson Dirac operator in lattice gauge theory can be identified as a mathematical object in $K$-theory and that its associated spectral flow is equal to the index. In comparison to the standard lattice Dirac operator index, our formulation does not require the Ginsparg-Wilson relation and has broader applicability to systems with boundaries and to the mod-two version of the indices in general dimensions. We numerically verify that the $K$ and $KO$ group formulas reproduce the known index theorems in continuum theory. We examine the Atiyah-Singer index on a flat two-dimensional torus and, for the first time, demonstrate that the Atiyah-Patodi-Singer index with nontrivial curved boundaries, as well as the mod-two versions, can be computed on a lattice.

Symmetry of screening masses of mesons in two-flavor lattice QCD at high temperatures

We investigate spatial two-point correlation functions of mesonic operators in two-flavor lattice QCD at high temperatures. The simulated temperatures over the range $T \in [147, 330]$ MeV, where the critical temperature is estimated around 165 MeV. To ensure a good control of the chiral symmetry we employ the Möbius domain-wall fermion action for two degenerate flavors of quarks. With a lattice cut off $a^{-1}\sim 2.6$ GeV, the residual mass is reduced to 0.14 MeV. With the energy spectrum obtained from the screening mass at incremental values of the temperature range, we examine the $SU(2)_L\times SU(2)_R$ chiral symmetry, the anomalous axial $U(1)$ as well as an enhanced symmetry which exchanges the spin degrees of freedom. We also study how the data approaches the perturbative prediction given by twice the Matsubara frequency of free quarks.

The index of lattice Dirac operators and $K$-theory

We mathematically show an equality between the index of a Dirac operator on a flat continuum torus and the $η$ invariant of a lattice Dirac operator known as the Wilson Dirac operator with a negative mass when the lattice spacing is sufficiently small. Unlike the standard approach, our formulation using $K$-theory does not require modified chiral symmetry on the lattice. We prove that a one-parameter family of continuum massive Dirac operators and the corresponding Wilson Dirac operators belong to the same equivalence class of the $K^1$ group at a finite lattice spacing. Their indices, which are evaluated by the spectral flow or equivalently by the $η$ invariant at a finite mass, are proved to be equal.

Anatomy of finite-volume effect on hadronic vacuum polarization contribution to muon g-2

Low-energy spectrum relevant to the lattice calculation of hadronic vacuum polarization contribution to muon anomalous magnetic moment a_μis dominantly given by two-pion states satisfying Lüscher's finite-volume quantization condition. Finite-volume effects from those states may exhibit power-law dependence on the volume, contrary to an exponential suppression as suggested by chiral effective theory. Employing the finite-volume state decomposition of Euclidean correlators, we systematically investigate the volume dependence and identify the different volume scalings depending on the region. Using phenomenological inputs for ππphase shift and time-like pion form factor, we obtain an estimate for the finite-volume effects on a_μ, which is consistent with previous works. Numerical results are given for the ``window'' observables of a_μ.

Lattice Weyl Fermion on a Single Spherical Domain-Wall

We investigate a single spherical domain-wall embedded in a three-dimensional Euclidean lattice. We employ the Shamir-type domain-wall fermion formulation, where the negative mass region is confined inside the $S^2$ domain-wall, while the positive mass outside is taken to the infinite limit, allowing the exterior region to be neglected effectively. In the absence of a gauge potential, Weyl fermions emerge as edge-localized modes along the $S^2$ domain-wall. When a nontrivial $U(1)$ gauge potential is present, additional zero modes with opposite chirality appears, localized at the center near the monopole. This centrally localized mode originates from the effective mass contribution of the Wilson term, which induces a domain-wall near the monopole.

Study of symmetries in finite temperature $N_f=2$ QCD with Möbius Domain Wall Fermions

We report on the ongoing study of symmetry of $N_f=2$ QCD around the critical temperature. Our simulations of $N_f = 2$ QCD employ the Möbius domain-wall fermion action with residual mass $\sim 1\mbox{MeV}$ or less, maintaining a good chiral symmetry. Using the screening masses from the two point spatial correlators we compare the mass difference between channels connected through various symmetry transformations. Our analysis focuses on restoration of the $SU(2)_L\times SU(2)_R$ as well as anomalously broken axial $U(1)_A$. We also present additional study of a potential $SU(2)_{CS}$ symmetry which may emerge at sufficiently high temperatures.

$η$ invariant of massive Wilson Dirac operator and the index

We revisit the lattice index theorem in the perspective of $K$-theory. The standard definition given by the overlap Dirac operator equals to the $η$ invariant of the Wilson Dirac operator with a negative mass. This equality is not coincidental but reflects a mathematically profound significance known as the suspension isomorphism of $K$-groups. Specifically, we identify the Wilson Dirac operator as an element of the $K^1$ group, which is characterized by the $η$-invariant. Furthermore, we prove that, at sufficiently small but finite lattice spacings, this $η$-invariant equals to the index of the continuum Dirac operator. Our results indicate that the Ginsparg-Wilson relation and the associated exact chiral symmetry are not essential for understanding gauge field topology in lattice gauge theory.

Quark number susceptibility and conserved charge fluctuation for (2+1)-flavor QCD with Möbius domain wall fermions

We present quark number susceptibilities and conserved charge fluctuations for (2+1)-flavor QCD using Möbius Domain Wall fermions with a pion mass of \(135~\rm{MeV}\). Our results are compared with hadron resonance gas models below the QCD transition temperature and with \(\mathcal{O}(g^2)\) perturbation theory at high temperatures. Additionally, we compare our findings with results from staggered fermion discretizations. Furthermore, we also present results of leading order Kurtosis of electric charge and strangeness fluctuations.

A lattice formulation of Weyl fermions on a single curved surface

In the standard lattice domain-wall fermion formulation, one needs two flat domain-walls where both of the left- and right-handed massless modes appear. In this work we investigate a single domain-wall system with a nontrivial curved background. Specifically we consider a massive fermion on a $3D$ square lattice, whose domain-wall is a $2D$ sphere. In the free theory, we find that a single Weyl fermion is localized at the wall and it feels gravity through the induced spin connection. With a topologically nontrivial $U(1)$ link gauge field, however, we find a zero mode with the opposite chirality localized at the center where the gauge field is singular. In the latter case, the low-energy effective theory is not chiral but vectorlike. We discuss how to circumvent this obstacle in formulating lattice chiral gauge theory in the single domain-wall fermion system.
