An elementary proof of the non-renormalization theorem for the Wess-Zumino model

Using the exact renormalization group (ERG) differential equation, we give an elementary proof of the non-renormalization theorem for the Wess-Zumino model. We introduce auxiliary fields to linearize the supersymmetry transformation, but we do not rely on the superfield techniques. We give sufficient background material on the Wilson action and the ERG formalism to make the paper self-contained.

Renormalizable non-renormalizable theories

The general prescription for constructing the continuum limit of a field theory is introduced. We then apply the prescription to construct the O(N) non-linear sigma model and the Gross-Neveu model in three dimensions using the large N expansions. We compare these non-linear models with the linearized models, and show the equivalence.

Perturbative construction of the two-dimensional O(N) non-linear sigma model with ERG

We use the exact renormalization group (ERG) perturbatively to construct the Wilson action for the two-dimensional O(N) non-linear sigma model. The construction amounts to regularization of a non-linear symmetry with a momentum cutoff. A quadratically divergent potential is generated by the momentum cutoff, but its non-invariance is compensated by the jacobian of the non-linear symmetry transformation.

Realization of symmetry in the ERG approach to quantum field theory

We review the use of the exact renormalization group for realization of symmetry in renormalizable field theories. The review consists of three parts. In part I (sects. 2,3,4), we start with the perturbative construction of a renormalizable field theory as a solution of the exact renormalization group (ERG) differential equation. We show how to characterize renormalizability by an appropriate asymptotic behavior of the solution for a large momentum cutoff. Renormalized parameters are introduced to control the asymptotic behavior. In part II (sects. 5--9), we introduce two formalisms to incorporate symmetry: one by imposing the Ward-Takahashi identity, and another by imposing the generalized Ward-Takahashi identity via sources that generate symmetry transformations. We apply the two formalisms to concrete models such as QED, YM theories, and the Wess-Zumino model in four dimensions, and the O(N) non-linear sigma model in two dimensions. We end this part with calculations of the abelian axial and chiral anomalies. In part III (sects. 10,11), we overview the Batalin-Vilkovisky formalism adapted to the Wilson action of a bare theory with a UV cutoff. We provide a few appendices to give details and extensions that can be omitted for the understanding of the main text. The last appendix is a quick summary for the reader's convenience.

Ward-Takahashi identity for Yang-Mills theory in the Exact Renormalization Group

We give a functional derivation of the Ward-Takahashi identity for Yang-Mills theory in the framework of the exact renormalization group. The identity realizes non-abelian gauge symmetry nontrivially despite the presence of a momentum cutoff. The cutoff deforms the gauge transformation by introducing composite operators. In our functional method, which is an extension of the method used in our previous work on QED, these composite operators are expressed in terms of the Wilson action that depends on both a UV cutoff and an IR cutoff.

Construction of a Wilson action for the Wess-Zumino model

We construct a Wilson action for the Wess-Zumino model by applying the exact renormalization group perturbatively. Using neither superfields nor auxiliary fields, we construct a supersymmetric action only with complex scalar and Majorana spinor fields. We adopt the BRST (antifield) formalism to show the consistency of the construction to all orders in loop expansions. The resulting action has a quadratically divergent scalar mass term which is absent in the superfield formalism.

The Exact Renormalization Group -- renormalization theory revisited --

We overview the entire renormalization theory, both perturbative and non-perturbative, by the method of the exact renormalization group (ERG). We emphasize particularly on the perturbative application of the ERG to the phi4 theory and QED in the four dimensional euclidean space.

On the construction of QED using ERG

It has been known for some time that a smooth momentum cutoff is compatible with local gauge symmetries. In this paper we show concretely how to construct QED using the exact renormalization group (ERG). First, we give a new derivation of the Ward identity for the Wilson action using the technique of composite operators. Second, parameterizing the theory by its asymptotic behavior for a large cutoff, we show how to fine-tune the parameters to satisfy the identity. Third, we recast the identity as invariance of the Wilson action under a non-linear BRST transformation.

On the relation between RG and ERG

We discuss how the ordinary renormalization group (RG) equations arise in the context of Wilson's exact renormalization group (ERG) as formulated by Polchinski. We consider the phi4 theory in four dimensional euclidean space as an example, and introduce a particular scheme of parameterizing the solutions of the ERG equations. By analyzing the scalar composite operators of dimension two and four, we show that the parameters obey mass independent RG equations. We conjecture the equivalence of our parameterization scheme with the MS scheme for dimensional regularization.

Quantum Master Equation for QED in Exact Renormalization Group

Recently, one of us (H.S.) gave an explicit form of the Ward-Takahashi identity for the Wilson action of QED. We first rederive the identity using a functional method. The identity makes it possible to realize the gauge symmetry even in the presence of a momentum cutoff. In the cutoff dependent realization, the abelian nature of the gauge symmetry is lost, breaking the nilpotency of the BRS transformation. Using the Batalin-Vilkovisky formalism, we extend the Wilson action by including the antifield contributions. Then, the Ward-Takahashi identity for the Wilson action is lifted to a quantum master equation, and the modified BRS transformation regains nilpotency. We also obtain a flow equation for the extended Wilson action.

Integral equations for ERG

An application of the exact renormalization group equations to the scalar field theory in three dimensional euclidean space is discussed. We show how to modify the original formulation by J. Polchinski in order to find the Wilson-Fisher fixed point using perturbation theory.

Supersymmetry in gauge theories with extra dimensions

We show that a quantum-mechanical N=2 supersymmetry is hidden in 4d mass spectrum of any gauge invariant theories with extra dimensions. The N=2 supercharges are explicitly constructed in terms of differential forms. The analysis can be extended to extra dimensions with boundaries, and for a single extra dimension we clarify a possible set of boundary conditions consistent with 5d gauge invariance, although some of the boundary conditions break 4d gauge symmetries.

Two dimensional non-linear sigma models as a limit of the linear sigma models

We show how to obtain the O(N) non-linear sigma model in two dimensions as a strong coupling limit of the corresponding linear sigma model. In taking the strong coupling limit, the squared mass parameter must be given a specific coupling dependence that assures the finiteness of the physical mass scale. The relation discussed in this paper, which applies to the renormalized theories as opposed to the regularized theories, is an example of a general relation between the linear and non-linear models in two and three dimensions.

Feynman graph solution to Wilson's exact renormalization group

We introduce a new prescription for renormalizing Feynman diagrams. The prescription is similar to BPHZ, but it is mass independent, and works in the massless limit as the MS scheme with dimensional regularization. The prescription gives a diagrammatic solution to Wilson's exact renormalization group differential equation.

Beta Functions in the Integral Equation Approach to the Exact Renormalization Group

We incorporate running parameters and anomalous dimensions into the framework of the exact renormalization group. We modify the exact renormalization group differential equations for a real scalar field theory, using the anomalous dimensions of the squared mass and the scalar field. Following a previous paper in which an integral equation approach to the exact renormalization group was introduced, we reformulate the modified differential equations as integral equations that define the continuum limit directly in terms of a running squared mass and self-coupling constant. Universality of the continuum limit under an arbitrary change of the momentum cutoff function is discussed using the modified exact renormalization group equations.

Bootstrapping Perturbative Perfect Actions

We study the exact renormalization group of the four dimensional phi4 theory perturbatively. We reformulate the differential renormalization group equations as integral equations that define the continuum limit of the theory directly with no need for a bare theory. We show how the self-consistency of the integral equations leads to the determination of the interaction vertices in the continuum limit. The inductive proof of the existence of a solution to the integral equations amounts to a proof of perturbative renormalizability, and it consists of nothing more than counting the scale dimensions of the interaction vertices. Universality is discussed within a context of the exact renormalization group.

Off-shell renormalization of the abelian Higgs model in the unitary gauge

We discuss the off-shell renormalization properties of the abelian Higgs model in the unitary gauge. The model is not renormalizable according to the usual power counting rules. In this paper, however, we show that with a proper choice of interpolating fields for the massive photon and the Higgs particle, their off-shell Green functions can be renormalized. An analysis of the nature of the extra singularities in the unitary gauge is given, and a recipe for the off-shell renormalization is provided.
