Optical Hall conductivity in ordinary and graphene QHE systems

We have revealed from a numerical study that the optical Hall conductivity $σ_{xy}(ω)$ has a characteristic feature even in the ac ($\sim$ THz) regime in that the Hall plateaus are retained both in the ordinary two-dimensional electron gas and in graphene in the quantum Hall (QHE) regime, although the plateau height is no longer quantized in ac. In graphene $σ_{xy}(ω)$ reflects the unusual Landau level structure. The effect remains unexpectedly robust against a significant strength of disorder, which we attribute to an effect of localization. We predict the ac quantum Hall measurements are feasible through the Faraday rotation characterized by the fine-structure constant $α$.

Landau level broadening in graphene with long-range disorder -- Robustness of the n=0 level

Broadening of the Landau levels in graphene and the associated quantum Hall plateau-to-plateau transition are investigated numerically. For correlated bond disorder, the graphene-specific n=0 Landau level of the Dirac fermions becomes anomalously sharp accompanied by the Hall transition exhibiting a fixed-point-like criticality. Similarly anomalous behavior for the n=0 Landau level is also shown to occur in correlated random magnetic fields, which suggests that the anomaly is generic to disorders that preserve the chiral symmetry.

Nonequilibrium Steady State of Photoexcited Correlated Electrons in the Presence of Dissipation

We present a framework to determine nonequilibrium steady states in strongly correlated electron systems in the presence of dissipation. This is demonstrated for a correlated electron (Falicov-Kimball) model attached to a heat bath and irradiated by an intense pump light, for which an exact solution is obtained with the Floquet method combined with the nonequilibrium dynamical mean-field theory. On top of a Drude-like peak indicative of photometallization as observed in recent pump-probe experiments, new nonequilibrium phenomena are predicted to emerge, where the optical conductivity exhibits dip and kink structures around the frequency of the pump light, a midgap absorption arising from photoinduced Floquet subbands, and a negative attenuation (gain) due to a population inversion.

Photoinduced insulator-metal transition and nonlinear optical response of correlated electrons -- a DMFT analysis

We investigate a photoinduced insulator-metal transition in the Falicov-Kimball model with the dynamical mean-field theory (DMFT) extended to nonequilibrium systems in periodic modulations in time. When the photon energy of the pump light is $Ω\approx U$ ($U$: the interaction strength), a Drude-like peak is found to grow in the optical conductivity spectrum, which is an evidence that the system is driven into a metallic state. During the transition, the band gap does not collapse, whereas the distribution function exhibits a non-monotonic behaviour away from the Fermi distribution. This indicates that the transition cannot be accounted for by heating effects, but creation of photo-carriers is responsible.

Photoinduced insulator-metal transition in correlated electrons -- a Floquet analysis with the dynamical mean-field theory

In order to investigate photoinduced insulator-metal transitions observed in correlated electron systems, we propose a new theoretical method, where we combine a Floquet-matrix method for AC-driven systems with the dynamical mean-field theory. The method can treat nonequilibrium steady states exactly beyond the linear-response regime. We have applied the method to the Falicov-Kimball model coupled to AC electric fields, and numerically obtained the spectral function, the nonequilibrium distribution function and the current-voltage characteristic. The results show that intense AC fields indeed drive Mott-like insulating states into photoinduced metallic states in a nonlinear way.

Pnictogen height as a possible switch between high-T_c nodeless and low-T_c nodal pairings in the iron based superconductors

We study the effect of the lattice structure on the spin-fluctuation mediated superconductivity in the iron pnictides adopting the five-band models of several virtual lattice structures of LaFeAsO as well as actual materials such as NdFeAsO and LaFePO obtained from the maximally-localized Wannier orbitals. Random phase approximation is applied to the models to solve the Eliashberg equation. This reveals that the gap function and the strength of the superconducting instability are determined by the cooperation or competition among multiple spin fluctuation modes arising from several nestings among disconnected pieces of the Fermi surface, which is affected by the lattice structure. Specifically, the appearance of the Fermi surface $γ$ around $(π,π)$ in the unfolded Brillouin zone is sensitive to the pnictogen height $h_{\rm Pn}$ measured from the Fe plane, where $h_{\rm Pn}$ is shown to act as a switch between high-$T_c$ nodeless and low-$T_c$ nodal pairings. We also find that reduction of the lattice constants generally suppresses superconductivity. We can then combine these to obtain a generic superconducting phase diagram against the pnictogen height and lattice constant. This suggests that NdFeAsO is expected to exhibit a fully-gapped, sign-reversing s-wave superconductivity with a higher $T_c$ than in LaFeAsO, while a nodal pairing with a low $T_c$ is expected for LaFePO, which is consistent with experiments.

Photo-induced Hall Effect in Graphene -- Effect of Boundary Types

We theoretically predict, with the Keldysh Green's function combined with the Floquet method, that the AC electric field of a circularly polarized light should induce a Hall effect, in the absence of uniform magnetic fields, in graphene with a pair of Dirac dispersions. Although the Hall coefficient is not quantized, the dynamical gap generated by the AC field and the associated Hall effect bear a topological origin which can be traced back to the Dirac cones. We also study the dependence on boundary conditions. The required AC field strength is estimated to be realistic.

Photo-induced Tomonaga-Luttinger-like liquid in a Mott insulator

Photo-induced metallic states in a Mott insulator are studied for the half-filled, one-dimensional Hubbard model with the time-dependent density matrix renormalization group. An irradiation of strong AC field is found to create a linear dispersion in the optical spectrum (current-current correlation) in the nonequilibrium steady state reminiscent of the Tomonaga-Luttinger liquid for the doped Mott insulator in equilibrium. The spin spectrum in nonequilibrium retains the des Cloizeaux-Pearson mode with the spin velocity differing from the charge velocity. The mechanism of the photocarrier-doping, along with the renormalization in the charge velocity, is analyzed in terms of an effective Dirac model.

Photovoltaic Hall effect in graphene

Response of electronic systems in intense lights (AC electric fields) to DC source-drain fields is formulated with the Floquet method. We have then applied the formalism to graphene, for which we show that a non-linear effect of a circularly polarized light can open a gap in the Dirac cone, which leads to a photo-induced dc Hall current. This is numerically confirmed for a graphene ribbon attached to electrodes with the Keldysh Green's function.

Unconventional pairing originating from disconnected Fermi surfaces in the iron-based superconductor

For the iron-based high $T_c$ superconductor LaFeAsO$_{1-x}$F$_x$, we construct a minimal model, where all of the five Fe $d$ bands turn out to be involved. We then investigate the origin of superconductivity with a five-band random-phase approximation by solving the Eliashberg equation. We conclude that the spin fluctuation modes arising from the nesting between the disconnected Fermi pockets realise, basically, an extended s-wave pairing, where the gap changes sign across the nesting vector.

Correlated electron systems periodically driven out of equilibrium: Floquet + DMFT formalism

We propose to combine the Floquet formalism for systems in ac fields with the dynamical mean-field theory to study correlated electron systems periodically driven out of equilibrium by external fields such as intense laser light. This approach has a virtue that we can nonperturbatively include both the correlation effects and nonlinear effects due to the driving field, which is imperative in analyzing recent experiments for photoinduced phase transitions. In solving the problem, we exploit a general theorem that the Hamiltonian in a Floquet matrix form can be exactly diagonalized for single-band noninteracting systems. As a demonstration, we have applied the method to the Falicov-Kimball model in intense ac fields to calculate the spectral function. The result shows that photoinduced midgap states emerge from strong ac fields, triggering an insulator-metal transition.

Unconventional superconductivity originating from disconnected Fermi surfaces in the iron-based compound

The iron-based LaFeAsO$_{1-x}$F$_x$ recently discovered by Hosono's group is a fresh theoretical challenge as a new class of high-temperature superconductors. Here we describe the electronic structure of the material and the mechanism of superconductivity. We start with constructing a tight-binding model in terms of the maximally localized Wannier orbitals from a first-principles electronic structure calculation, which has turned out to involve all the five Fe 3d bands. This is used to calculate the spin and charge susceptibilities with the random phase approximation. The spin susceptibility has peaks around ${\Vec k} = (π, 0), (0, π)$ arising from a nesting across disconnected Fermi surface pockets. We have then plugged the susceptibilities into the linearised Eliashberg equation. For the doping concentration $x = 0.1$, we obtain an unconventional s-wave pairing, which is roughly an extended s in that the gap changes sign between the Fermi pockets, but the gap function is actually a 5$\times$5 matrix. Its experimental implications are also discussed.

Unconventional pairing originating from disconnected Fermi surfaces in superconducting LaFeAsO$_{1-x}$F$_x$}

For a newly discovered iron-based high $T_c$ superconductor LaFeAsO$_{1-x}$F$_x$, we have constructed a minimal model, where inclusion of all the five Fe $d$ bands is found to be necessary. Random-phase approximation is applied to the model to investigate the origin of superconductivity. We conclude that the multiple spin fluctuation modes arising from the nesting across the disconnected Fermi surfaces realize an extended s-wave pairing, while d-wave pairing can also be another candidate.

Electronic Structure and Electron Correlation in LaFeAsO_{1-x}F_x and LaFePO_{1-x}F_x

Photoemission spectroscopy is used to investigate the electronic structure of the newly discovered iron-based superconductors LaFeAsO_{1-x}F_x and LaFePO_{1-x}F_x. Line shapes of the Fe 2p core-level spectra suggest an itinerant character of Fe 3d electrons. The valence-band spectra are generally consistent with band-structure calculations except for the shifts of Fe 3d-derived peaks toward the Fermi level. From spectra taken in the Fe 3p -> 3d core-absorption region, we have obtained the experimental Fe 3d partial density of states, and explained it in terms of a band-structure calculation with a phenomenological self-energy correction, yielding a mass renormalization factor of ~< 2.

Edge states for the n=0 Laudau level in graphene

In the anomalous quantum Hall effect (QHE), a hallmark of graphene, nature of the edge states in magnetic fields poses an important question, since the edge and bulk should be intimately related in QHE. Here we have theoretically studied the edge states, focusing on the E=0 edge mode, which is unusual in that the mode is embedded right within the n=0 bulk Landau level, while usual QHE edge modes reside across adjacent Landau levels. Here we show that the n=0 Landau level, including the edge mode, has a wave function amplitude accumulated along zigzag edges whose width scales with the magnetic length, l_B. This contrasts with the usual QHE where the charge is depleted from the edge. The implications are: (i) The E=0 edge states in strong magnetic fields have a topological origin in the honeycomb lattice, so that they are outside the continuum ("massless Dirac") model. (ii) The edge-mode contribution decays only algebraically into the bulk, but this is "topologically" compensated by the bulk contribution, resulting in the accumulation over l_B. (iii) The real space behavior obtained here should be observable in STM experiments.

Edge states in graphene in magnetic fields -- a speciality of the edge mode embedded in the n=0 Landau band

While usual edge states in the quantum Hall effect(QHE) reside between adjacent Landau levels, QHE in graphene has a peculiar edge mode at E=0 that reside right within the n=0 Landau level as protected by the chiral symmetry. We have theoretically studied the edge states to show that the E=0 edge mode, despite being embedded in the bulk Landau level, does give rise to a wave function whose charge is accumulated along zigzag edges. This property, totally outside continuum models, implies that the graphene QHE harbors edges distinct from ordinary QHE edges with their topological origin. In the charge accumulation the bulk states re-distribute their charge significantly, which may be called a topological compensation of charge density. The real space behavior obtained here should be observable in an STM imaging.

Topological low-energy modes in N=0 Landau levels of graphene: a possibility of a quantum-liquid ground state

We point out that the zero-energy Landau level of Dirac fermions in graphene can be, in the presence of a repulsive electron-electron interaction, split into two (levels) associated with a "bond ordering" formation having a "Kekule pattern", which respects the chiral symmetry. Since the Kekule pattern has a three-fold degeneracy, domain structures are implied, for which we show that in-gap states localized along the domain boundaries exist as topological states. Based on this a possibility of a quantum-liquid ground state of graphene in magnetic fields is discussed.

Nonequilibrium Quantum Breakdown in a Strongly Correlated Electron System

The nonlinear transport properties of the Mott insulator are discussed with focus on the many-body Landau-Zener mechanism. After reviewing basic concepts such as the non-adiabatic geometric phase and the Schwinger mechanism, we study the decay of the insulating groundstate in strong electric fields using the time-dependent density matrix renormalization group. A short comment on the proposed mapping to the quantum walk model is added before discussing the relevance of the theory to experimental results. This article is a draft of a book chapter of the book entitled "Quantum and Semi-classical Percolation & Breakdown" (Lecture Note in Physics, Springer-Verlag), to appear 2008.
