Dynamically assisted Schwinger mechanism and chirality production in parallel electromagnetic field

We study particle and chirality production from the vacuum in the presence of a slow strong parallel electromagnetic field superimposed by a fast weak perturbative electromagnetic field. We derive an analytical formula for the particle and chirality production number based on the perturbation theory in the Furry picture. With the formula, we analytically discuss the interplay and dynamical assistance between the Schwinger mechanism and one-photon pair production and clarify effects of a parallel slow strong magnetic field. We also show that the dynamical assistance can significantly enhance chirality production, and that a sizable amount of chirality can be produced even for massive particles. Phenomenological applications including heavy-ion collisions and intense laser experiments are also discussed.

Real-time dynamics of axion particle production due to spontaneous decay of a coherent axion field

We show that the coherent axion field spontaneously decays by emitting axion particles via quantum tunneling if axion potential has more than one minimum. By employing the $\hbar$-expansion and mean field approximation, we develop a formalism to trace the real-time dynamics of the axion particle production including its backreaction to the coherent axion field. We also present numerical results for the time evolution of various physical quantities including the strength of the coherent axion field, phase-space density of produced axion particles, energy density, and pressure. Phenomenological implications of our results are also discussed.

Spontaneous generation of spin current from the vacuum by strong electric fields

We discuss spontaneous spin current generation from the vacuum by strong electric fields as a result of interplay between the Schwinger mechanism and a spin-orbit coupling. By considering a homogeneous slow strong electric field superimposed by a fast weak transverse electric field, we explicitly evaluate the vacuum expectation value of a spin current (the Bargmann-Wigner spin current) by numerically solving the Dirac equation. We show that a non-vanishing spin current polarized in the direction perpendicular to the electric fields flows mostly in the longitudinal direction. We also find that a relativistic effect due to the helicity conservation affects direction/polarization of spin current.

Spin-dependent dynamically assisted Schwinger mechanism

We study electron and positron pair production from the vacuum by a strong slow electric field superimposed by a weak fast electric field pointing in an arbitrary direction as a perturbation (the dynamically assisted Schwinger mechanism). An analytical formula for the production number is derived on the basis of the perturbation theory in the Furry picture. The formula is found to be in good agreement with non-perturbative results obtained by numerically solving the Dirac equation if the perturbation is sufficiently weak and/or is not very slow. We also find analytically/numerically that the Schwinger mechanism becomes spin-dependent if the perturbation has a transverse component with respect to the strong electric field. The number difference between spin up and down particles is strongly suppressed by an exponential of the critical field strength if the frequency of the perturbation is small, while it is only weakly suppressed by powers of the critical field strength if the frequency is large enough. We also find that the spin-imbalance exhibits non-trivial oscillating behaviors in terms of the frequency of the perturbation, the azimuthal angle, and the momentum of produced particles.

Fate of spin polarization in a relativistic fluid: An entropy-current analysis

We derive relativistic hydrodynamic equations with a dynamical spin degree of freedom on the basis of an entropy-current analysis. The first and second laws of local thermodynamics constrain possible structures of the constitutive relations including a spin current and the antisymmetric part of the (canonical) energy-momentum tensor. Solving the obtained hydrodynamic equations within the linear-mode analysis, we find spin-diffusion modes, indicating that spin density is damped out after a characteristic time scale controlled by transport coefficients introduced in the antisymmetric part of the energy-momentum tensor in the entropy-current analysis. This is a consequence of mutual convertibility between spin and orbital angular momentum.

Franz-Keldysh effect in strong-field QED

We studied a QED analog of the Franz-Keldysh effect, and the interplay between the non-perturbative (the Schwinger mechanism) and the perturbative particle production mechanism from the vacuum in the presence of a strong slow field superimposed by a weak field. We found that the Franz-Keldysh effect significantly affects the particle production: (i) the perturbative particle production occurs even below the threshold energy; (ii) the perturbative production becomes the most efficient just above the threshold energy; and (iii) an oscillating behavior appears in the production number above the threshold energy. These non-trivial changes are suppressed only weakly by powers of the critical field strength of QED. A relation to the dynamically assisted Schwinger mechanism and implications to experiments are also discussed.

Quark and Gluon Production from a Boost-invariantly Expanding Color Electric Field

Particle production from an expanding classical color electromagnetic field is extensively studied, motivated by the early stage dynamics of ultra-relativistic heavy ion collisions. We develop a formalism at one-loop order to compute the particle spectra by canonically quantizing quark, gluon and ghost fluctuations under the presence of such an expanding classical color background field; the canonical quantization is done in the $τ$-$η$ coordinates in order to take into account manifestly the expanding geometry. As a demonstration, we model the expanding classical color background field by a boost-invariantly expanding homogeneous color electric field with lifetime $T$, for which we obtain analytically the quark and gluon production spectra by solving the equations of motion of QCD non-perturbatively with respect to the color electric field. In this paper we study (i) finite lifetime effect which is found to modify significantly the particle spectra from those expected from the Schwinger formula; (ii) the difference between the quark and gluon production; and (iii) the quark mass dependence of the production spectra. Implications of these results to ultra-relativistic heavy ion collisions are also discussed.

Hadron Masses in Strong Magnetic Fields

Hadron masses under strong magnetic fields are studied. In the presence of strong magnetic fields exceeding the QCD energy scale $ eB \gg Λ^2_{\rm QCD} $, ${\rm SU(3)}_{\rm flavor} \otimes {\rm SU(2)}_{\rm spin}$ symmetry of hadrons is explicitly broken so that the quark components of hadrons differ from those with zero or weak magnetic fields $ eB \lesssim Λ^2_{\rm QCD} $. Also, squeezing of hadrons by strong magnetic fields affects the hadron mass spectrum. We develop a quark model which appropriately incorporates these features and analytically calculate various hadron masses including mesons, baryons and those with strangeness.

Finite pulse effects on $e^{+}e^{-}$ pair creation from strong electric fields

We investigate electron-positron pair creation from the vacuum in a pulsed electric background field. Employing the Sauter-type pulsed field $E(t)=E_0 {\rm sech}^2 (t/τ)$ with height $E_0$ and width $τ$, we demonstrate explicitly the interplay between the nonperturbative and perturbative aspects of pair creation in the background field. We analytically compute the number of produced pairs from the vacuum in the Sauter-type field, and the result reproduces Schwinger's nonperturbative formula in the long pulse limit (the constant field limit), while in the short pulse limit it coincides with the leading-order perturbative result. We show that two dimensionless parameters $ν= |eE_0| τ^2$ and $γ= |eE_0| τ/m_e$ characterize the importance of multiple interactions with the fields and the transition from the perturbative to the nonperturbative regime. We also find that pair creation is enhanced compared to Schwinger's formula when the field strength is relativity weak $|eE_0|/m_e^2 \lesssim 1$ and the pulse duration is relatively short $m_e τ\lesssim 1$, and reveal that the enhancement is predominantly described by the lowest order perturbation with a single photon.
