Vortex lattice solutions to the Gross-Pitaevskii equation with spin-orbit coupling in optical lattices

Effective spin-orbit coupling can be created in cold atom systems using atom-light interaction. We study the BECs in an optical lattice using the Gross-Pitaevskii equation with spin-orbit coupling. Bloch states for the linear equation are numerically obtained, and compared with stationary solutions to the Gross-Pitaevskii equation with nonlinear terms. Various vortex lattice states are found when the spin-orbit coupling is strong.

Melting Transition of Vortex Lattice in Point Vortex Systems

Point vortices take a triangular lattice structure in a rotating system as a minimum energy state. We perform a numerical simulation of point vortex systems using initial conditions indicating that the triangular lattice is randomly perturbed. The total energy increases with the magnitude of the perturbation. When the energy is increased, the vortex lattice becomes irregular and a layered structure appears. When the energy is further increased, the layered structure disappears and a liquidlike state appears. We interpret the melting transition with a mean-field approximation for layered structures.

Stabilizing single- and two-color vortex beams in quadratic media by a trapping potential

We consider two-dimensional (2D) localized modes in the second-harmonic-generating χ^{(2)} system with the harmonic-oscillator (HO) trapping potential. In addition to its realization in optics, the system describes the mean-field dynamics of mixed atomic-molecular Bose-Einstein condensates (BECs). The existence and stability of various modes is determined by their total power, N, topological charge, m/2 [m is the intrinsic vorticity of the second-harmonic (SH) field], and χ^{(2)} mismatch, q. The analysis is carried out in a numerical form and, in parallel, by means of the variational approximation (VA), which produces results that agree well with numerical findings. Below a certain power threshold, N\leq N_{c}^{(m)}(q), all trapped modes are of the single-color type, represented by the SH component only, while the fundamental-frequency (FF) one is absent. In contrast with the usual situation, where such modes are always unstable, we demonstrate\ that they are stable, for m=0,1,2 (the mode with m=1 may be formally considered as a semi-vortex with topological charge m/2=1/2), at N\leq N_{c}^{(m)}(q), and unstable above this threshold. On the other hand, N_{c}^{(m)}(q)\equiv 0 at q\geq q_{\max} (in our notation, q_{\max}=1$), hence the single-color modes are unstable in the latter case. At N=N_{c}^{(m)}, the modes with m=0 and m=2 undergo a pitchfork bifurcation, which gives rise to two-color states, which remain completely stable for m=0. The two-color vortices with m=2 (topological charge 1) have an upper stability border, N=N_{c2}(q). Above the border, they exhibit periodic splittings and recombinations, while keeping their vorticity. The semi-vortex does not bifurcate; at N=N_{c}^{(m=1)}, it exhibits quasi-chaotic oscillations and a rotating "groove" resembling a screw-edge dislocation induced by the semi-integer vorticity.

Pattern formation in a model of photochemical reaction

Stripe and columnar patterns were experimentally found in photopolymer films during irradiation of collimated UV light. We propose a mathematical model of photopolymerization, perform numerical simulation, and find a spatially periodic columnar structure.

Cascade Failure in a Phase Model of Power Grids

We propose a phase model to study cascade failure in power grids composed of generators and loads. If the power demand is below a critical value, the model system of power grids maintains the standard frequency by feedback control. On the other hand, if the power demand exceeds the critical value, an electric failure occurs via step out (loss of synchronization) or voltage collapse. The two failures are incorporated as two removal rules of generator nodes and load nodes. We perform direct numerical simulation of the phase model on a scale-free network and compare the results with a mean-field approximation.

Reflection of Channel-Guided Solitons at Junctions in Two-Dimensional Nonlinear Schroedinger Equation

Solitons confined in channels are studied in the two-dimensional nonlinear Schrödinger equation. We study the dynamics of two channel-guided solitons near the junction where two channels are merged. The two solitons merge into one soliton, when there is no phase shift. If a phase difference is given to the two solitons, the Josephson oscillation is induced. The Josephson oscillation is amplified near the junction. The two solitons are reflected when the initial velocity is below a critical value.

Stable two-dimensional solitons supported by radially inhomogeneous self-focusing nonlinearity

We demonstrate that modulation of the local strength of the cubic self-focusing (SF) nonlinearity in the two-dimensional (2D) geometry, in the form of a circle with contrast $Δg$ of the SF coefficient relative to the ambient medium with a weaker nonlinearity, stabilizes a family of fundamental solitons against the critical collapse. The result is obtained in an analytical form, using the variational approximation (VA) and Vakhitov-Kolokolov (VK) stability criterion, and corroborated by numerical computations. For the small contrast, the stability interval of the soliton's norm scales as $ΔN\sim Δg$ (the replacement of the circle by an annulus leads to a reduction of the stability region by perturbations breaking the axial symmetry). To further illustrate this mechanism, we demonstrate, in an exact form, the stabilization of 1D solitons against the critical collapse under the action of a locally enhanced quintic SF nonlinearity.

Mechanism of Stepped Leaders in a Simple Discharge Model

We construct a one-dimensional model for the stepped leader in the filamental discharge by simplifying an electric-circuit model of discharge. We find that the leader of the discharge moves stepwise by direct numerical simulations, and then we try to understand the mechanism of the stepwise motion by reducing the spatially extended system to the dynamics of the tip position of the discharge.

Locomotive and reptation motion induced by internal force and friction

We propose a simple mechanical model of locomotion induced by internal force and friction. We first construct a system of two elements as an analog of the bipedal motion. The internal force does not induce a directional motion by itself because of the action-reaction law, but a directional motion becomes possible by the control of the frictional force. The efficiency of these model systems is studied using an analogy to the heat engine. As a modified version of the two-elements model, we construct a model which exhibits a bipedal motion similar to kinesin's motion of molecular motor. Next, we propose a linear chain model and a ladder model as an extension of the original two-element model,. We find a transition from a straight to a snake-like motion in a ladder model by changing the strength of the internal force.

Suppression of the quantum-mechanical collapse by repulsive interactions in a quantum gas

The quantum-mechanical collapse (alias fall onto the center of particles attracted by potential -1/r^2), or "quantum anomaly", is a well-known issue in the quantum theory. We demonstrate that the mean-field repulsive nonlinearity prevents the collapse and thus puts forward a solution to the quantum-anomaly problem different from that previously developed in the framework of the linear quantum-field theory. This solution may be realized in the 3D or 2D gas of dipolar bosons attracted by a central charge, and in the 2D gas of magnetic dipoles attracted by a current filament. In the 3D setting, the dipole-dipole interactions are also taken into regard, in the mean-field approximation. In lieu of the collapse, the cubic nonlinearity creates a 3D ground state (GS), which does not exist in the respective linear Schroedinger equation (SE). The addition of the harmonic trap gives rise to a tristability, in the case when the SE still does not lead to the collapse. In the 2D setting, the cubic nonlinearity is not strong enough to prevent the collapse; however, the quintic term does it, creating the GS, as well as its counterparts carrying the angular momentum (vorticity). Counter-intuitively, such self-trapped 2D modes exist even in the case of a weakly repulsive potential 1/r^2. In the presence of the harmonic trap, the 2D quintic model with a weakly repulsive central potential 1/r^2 gives rise to three confined modes, the middle one being unstable, spontaneously developing into a breather. In both the 3D and 2D cases, the GS wave functions are found in a numerical form, and also in the form of an analytical approximation, which is asymptotically exact in the limit of the large norm.

Reflection and Splitting of Channel-Guided Solitons in Two-dimensional Nonlinear Schrödinger Equation

Solitons confined in a channel are studied in the two-dimensional nonlinear Schroedinger equation. When a channel branches into two channels, a soliton is split into two solitons, if the initial kinetic energy exceeds a critical value. The branching point works as a pulse splitter. If it is below the critical value, the soliton is reflected. The critical kinetic energy for splitting is evaluated by a variational method. The variational method can be applied in the design of channel systems with reduced reflection.

Branching Patterns and Stepped Leaders in an Electric-Circuit Model for Creeping Discharge

We construct a two-dimensional electric circuit model for creeping discharge. Two types of discharge, surface corona and surface leader, are modeled by a two-step function of conductance. Branched patterns of surface leaders surrounded by the surface corona appear in numerical simulation. The fractal dimension of branched discharge patterns is calculated by changing voltage and capacitance. We find that surface leaders often grow stepwise in time, as is observed in lightning leaders of thunder.

Solitons in combined linear and nonlinear lattice potentials

We study ordinary solitons and gap solitons (GSs) in the effectively one-dimensional Gross-Pitaevskii equation, with a combination of linear and nonlinear lattice potentials. The main points of the analysis are effects of the (in)commensurability between the lattices, the development of analytical methods, viz., the variational approximation (VA) for narrow ordinary solitons, and various forms of the averaging method for broad solitons of both types, and also the study of mobility of the solitons. Under the direct commensurability (equal periods of the lattices, the family of ordinary solitons is similar to its counterpart in the free space. The situation is different in the case of the subharmonic commensurability, with L_{lin}=(1/2)L_{nonlin}, or incommensurability. In those cases, there is an existence threshold for the solitons, and the scaling relation between their amplitude and width is different from that in the free space. GS families demonstrate a bistability, unless the direct commensurability takes place. Specific scaling relations are found for them too. Ordinary solitons can be readily set in motion by kicking. GSs are mobile too, featuring inelastic collisions. The analytical approximations are shown to be quite accurate, predicting correct scaling relations for the soliton families in different cases. The stability of the ordinary solitons is fully determined by the VK (Vakhitov-Kolokolov) criterion, while the stability of GS families follows an inverted ("anti-VK") criterion, which is explained by means of the averaging approximation.

Cooperative jump motions of jammed particles in a one-dimensional periodic potential

Cooperative jump motions are studied for mutually interacting particles in a one-dimensional periodic potential. The diffusion constant for the cooperative motion in systems including a small number of particles is numerically calculated and it is compared with theoretical estimates. We find that the size distribution of the cooperative jump motions obeys an exponential law in a large system.

Kinetic Friction by a Small Number of Intervening Inelastic Particles between Rough Surfaces

We investigate a mechanism of the appearance of kinetic friction in granular materials. We consider a small number of intervening inelastic particles between two rough surfaces as one of the simplest dynamical models to study granular friction. The resistance force applied to the upper surface is numerically calculated. We find that the resistance force F(t) is scaled as F'(vt) for a small pulling velocity v. The time average F_0= in the limit v->0 is not zero owing to the mutual collisions between the intervening particles. The nonzero F_0 implies the appearance of kinetic friction in this simple dynamical system.

Two-dimensional dissipative gap solitons

We introduce a model which integrates the complex Ginzburg-Landau (CGL) equation in two dimensions (2D) with the linear-cubic-quintic combination of loss and gain terms, self-defocusing nonlinearity, and a periodic potential. In this system, stable 2D \textit{dissipative gap solitons} (DGSs) are constructed, both fundamental and vortical ones. The soliton families belong to the first finite bandgap of the system's linear spectrum. The solutions are obtained in a numerical form and also by means of an analytical approximation, which combines the variational description of the shape of the fundamental and vortical solitons and the balance equation for their total power. The analytical results agree with numerical findings. The model may be implemented as a laser medium in a bulk self-defocusing optical waveguide equipped with a transverse 2D grating, the predicted DGSs representing spatial solitons in this setting.
