Broad-band High-Energy Resolution Hard X-ray Spectroscopy using Transition Edge Sensors at SPring-8

We have succeeded in operating a transition-edge sensor (TES) spectrometer and evaluating its performance at the SPring-8 synchrotron X-ray light source. The TES spectrometer consists of a 240 pixel National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) TES system, and 220 pixels are operated simultaneously with an energy resolution of $4$~eV at 6~keV at a rate of about 1~c/s/pixel. The tolerance for high count rates is evaluated in terms of energy resolution and live time fraction, leading to an empirical compromise of about 2 x 10^3 c/s/all pixels with an energy resolution of 5 eV at 6 keV. By utilizing the TES's wide-band spectroscopic capability, simultaneous multi-element analysis is demonstrated for a standard sample. We conducted X-ray absorption near-edge structure (XANES) analysis in fluorescence mode using the TES spectrometer. The excellent energy resolution of the TES enabled us to detect weak fluorescence lines from dilute samples and trace elements that have previously been difficult to resolve due to the nearly overlapping emission lines of other dominant elements. The neighboring lines of As K alpha and Pb L alpha2 of the standard sample were clearly resolved and the XANES of Pb L alpha2 was obtained. Moreover, the X-ray spectrum from the small amount of Fe in aerosols was distinguished from the spectrum of a blank target, which helps us to understand the targets and the environment. These results are the first important step for the application of high resolution TES-based spectroscopy at hard X-ray synchrotron facilities.

Origin of vibrational wavepacket dynamics in Fe carbene photosensitizer determined with femtosecond X-ray emission and scattering

Disentangling the dynamics of electrons and nuclei during nonadiabatic molecular transformations remains a considerable experimental challenge. Here we have investigated photoinduced electron transfer dynamics following a metal-to-ligand charge-transfer (MLCT) excitation of the [Fe(bmip)2]2+ photosensitizer, where bmip = 2,6-bis(3-methyl-imidazole-1- ylidine)-pyridine, with simultaneous femtosecond-resolution Fe Kα and K\b{eta} X-ray Emission Spectroscopy (XES) and Wide Angle X-ray Scattering (WAXS). This measurement clearly shows temporal oscillations in the XES and WAXS difference signals with the same 278 fs period oscillation. The oscillatory signal originates from an Fe-ligand stretching mode vibrational wavepacket on a triplet metal-centered (3MC) excited state surface. The vibrational wavepacket is created by 40% of the excited population that undergoes electron transfer from the non-equilibrium MLCT excited state to the 3MC excited state with a 110 fs time constant, while the other 60% relaxes to a 3MLCT excited state in parallel. The sensitivity of the Kα XES spectrum to molecular structure results from core-level vibronic coupling, due to a 0.7% average Fe-ligand bond length difference in the lowest energy geometry of the 1s and 2p core-ionized states. These results highlight the importance of vibronic effects in time-resolved XES experiments and demonstrate the role of metal-centered excited states in the electronic excited state relaxation dynamics of an Fe carbene photosensitizer.

Search for the deeply bound $K^-pp$ state from the semi-inclusive forward-neutron spectrum in the in-flight $K^-$ reaction on helium-3

An experiment to search for the $K^-pp$ bound state was performed via the in-flight $^3$He($K^-,n)$ reaction using 5.3 $\times$ $10^9$ kaons at 1 GeV/$c$ at the J-PARC hadron experimental facility. In the semi-inclusive neutron missing-mass spectrum at $θ_{n}^{lab}=0^\circ$, no significant peak was observed in the region corresponding to $K^-pp$ binding energy larger than 80 MeV, where a bump structure has been reported in the $Λp$ final state in different reactions. Assuming the state to be isotropically decaying into $Λp$, mass-dependent upper limits on the production cross section were determined to be 30--180, 70--250, and 100--270 $μ$b/sr, for the natural widths of 20, 60, and 100 MeV, respectively, at 95\% confidence level.

The K1.8BR spectrometer system at J-PARC

A new spectrometer system was designed and constructed at the secondary beam line K1.8BR in the hadron hall of J-PARC to investigate $\bar K N$ interactions and $\bar K$-nuclear bound systems. The spectrometer consists of a high precision beam line spectrometer, a liquid $^3$He/$^4$He/D$_2$ target system, a Cylindrical Detector System that surrounds the target to detect the decay particles from the target region, and a neutron time-of-flight counter array located $\sim$15 m downstream from the target position. Details of the design, construction, and performance of the detector components are described.
