MTet: Multi-domain Translation for English and Vietnamese

We introduce MTet, the largest publicly available parallel corpus for English-Vietnamese translation. MTet consists of 4.2M high-quality training sentence pairs and a multi-domain test set refined by the Vietnamese research community. Combining with previous works on English-Vietnamese translation, we grow the existing parallel dataset to 6.2M sentence pairs. We also release the first pretrained model EnViT5 for English and Vietnamese languages. Combining both resources, our model significantly outperforms previous state-of-the-art results by up to 2 points in translation BLEU score, while being 1.6 times smaller.

Predicting housing prices and analyzing real estate market in the Chicago suburbs using Machine Learning

The pricing of housing properties is determined by a variety of factors. However, post-pandemic markets have experienced volatility in the Chicago suburb area, which have affected house prices greatly. In this study, analysis was done on the Naperville/Bolingbrook real estate market to predict property prices based on these housing attributes through machine learning models, and to evaluate the effectiveness of such models in a volatile market space. Gathering data from Redfin, a real estate website, sales data from 2018 up until the summer season of 2022 were collected for research. By analyzing these sales in this range of time, we can also look at the state of the housing market and identify trends in price. For modeling the data, the models used were linear regression, support vector regression, decision tree regression, random forest regression, and XGBoost regression. To analyze results, comparison was made on the MAE, RMSE, and R-squared values for each model. It was found that the XGBoost model performs the best in predicting house prices despite the additional volatility sponsored by post-pandemic conditions. After modeling, Shapley Values (SHAP) were used to evaluate the weights of the variables in constructing models.

Evaluate Quantum Combinatorial Optimization for Distribution Network Reconfiguration

This paper aims to implement and evaluate the performance of quantum computing on solving combinatorial optimization problems arising from the operations of the power grid. To this end, we construct a novel mixed integer conic programming formulation for the reconfiguration of radial distribution network in response to faults in distribution lines. Comparing to existing bus injection model in the literature, our formulation based the branch flows model is theoretically equivalent without needing non-explainable variables, thus being more numerically stable. The network reconfiguration model is then used as a benchmark to evaluate the performance of quantum computing algorithms in real quantum computers. It shows that while current quantum computing algorithms with fast execution time in quantum computers can be a promising solution candidate, its heuristic nature stem from its theoretical foundation should be considered carefully when applying into power grid optimization problems.

ViT5: Pretrained Text-to-Text Transformer for Vietnamese Language Generation

We present ViT5, a pretrained Transformer-based encoder-decoder model for the Vietnamese language. With T5-style self-supervised pretraining, ViT5 is trained on a large corpus of high-quality and diverse Vietnamese texts. We benchmark ViT5 on two downstream text generation tasks, Abstractive Text Summarization and Named Entity Recognition. Although Abstractive Text Summarization has been widely studied for the English language thanks to its rich and large source of data, there has been minimal research into the same task in Vietnamese, a much lower resource language. In this work, we perform exhaustive experiments on both Vietnamese Abstractive Summarization and Named Entity Recognition, validating the performance of ViT5 against many other pretrained Transformer-based encoder-decoder models. Our experiments show that ViT5 significantly outperforms existing models and achieves state-of-the-art results on Vietnamese Text Summarization. On the task of Named Entity Recognition, ViT5 is competitive against previous best results from pretrained encoder-based Transformer models. Further analysis shows the importance of context length during the self-supervised pretraining on downstream performance across different settings.

Numerical wave propagation aided by deep learning

We propose a deep learning approach for wave propagation in media with multiscale wave speed, using a second-order linear wave equation model. We use neural networks to enhance the accuracy of a given inaccurate coarse solver, which under-resolves a class of multiscale wave media and wave fields of interest. Our approach involves generating training data by the given computationally efficient coarse solver and another sufficiently accurate solver, applied to a class of wave media (described by their wave speed profiles) and initial wave fields. We find that the trained neural networks can approximate the nonlinear dependence of the propagation on the wave speed as long as the causality is appropriately sampled in training data. We combine the neural-network-enhanced coarse solver with the parareal algorithm and demonstrate that the coupled approach improves the stability of parareal algorithms for wave propagation and improves the accuracy of the enhanced coarse solvers.

VieSum: How Robust Are Transformer-based Models on Vietnamese Summarization?

Text summarization is a challenging task within natural language processing that involves text generation from lengthy input sequences. While this task has been widely studied in English, there is very limited research on summarization for Vietnamese text. In this paper, we investigate the robustness of transformer-based encoder-decoder architectures for Vietnamese abstractive summarization. Leveraging transfer learning and self-supervised learning, we validate the performance of the methods on two Vietnamese datasets.

CoTexT: Multi-task Learning with Code-Text Transformer

We present CoTexT, a pre-trained, transformer-based encoder-decoder model that learns the representative context between natural language (NL) and programming language (PL). Using self-supervision, CoTexT is pre-trained on large programming language corpora to learn a general understanding of language and code. CoTexT supports downstream NL-PL tasks such as code summarizing/documentation, code generation, defect detection, and code debugging. We train CoTexT on different combinations of available PL corpus including both "bimodal" and "unimodal" data. Here, bimodal data is the combination of text and corresponding code snippets, whereas unimodal data is merely code snippets. We first evaluate CoTexT with multi-task learning: we perform Code Summarization on 6 different programming languages and Code Refinement on both small and medium size featured in the CodeXGLUE dataset. We further conduct extensive experiments to investigate CoTexT on other tasks within the CodeXGlue dataset, including Code Generation and Defect Detection. We consistently achieve SOTA results in these tasks, demonstrating the versatility of our models.

Analysis of trophic networks: an optimisation approach

We introduce a methodology to study the possible matter flows of an ecosystem defined by observational biomass data and realistic biological constraints. The flows belong to a polyhedron in a multi dimensional space making statistical exploration difficult in practice; instead, we propose to solve a convex optimization problem. Five criteria corresponding to ecological network indices have been selected to be used as convex goal functions. Numerical results show that the method is fast and can be used for large systems. Minimum flow solutions are analyzed using flow decomposition in paths and circuits. Their consistency is also tested by introducing a system of differential equations for the biomasses and examining the stability of the biomass fixed point. The method is illustrated and explained throughout the text on an ecosystem toy model. It is also applied to realistic food models.

A Physiology-Driven Computational Model for Post-Cardiac Arrest Outcome Prediction

Patients resuscitated from cardiac arrest (CA) face a high risk of neurological disability and death, however pragmatic methods are lacking for accurate and reliable prognostication. The aim of this study was to build computational models to predict post-CA outcome by leveraging high-dimensional patient data available early after admission to the intensive care unit (ICU). We hypothesized that model performance could be enhanced by integrating physiological time series (PTS) data and by training machine learning (ML) classifiers. We compared three models integrating features extracted from the electronic health records (EHR) alone, features derived from PTS collected in the first 24hrs after ICU admission (PTS24), and models integrating PTS24 and EHR. Outcomes of interest were survival and neurological outcome at ICU discharge. Combined EHR-PTS24 models had higher discrimination (area under the receiver operating characteristic curve [AUC]) than models which used either EHR or PTS24 alone, for the prediction of survival (AUC 0.85, 0.80 and 0.68 respectively) and neurological outcome (0.87, 0.83 and 0.78). The best ML classifier achieved higher discrimination than the reference logistic regression model (APACHE III) for survival (AUC 0.85 vs 0.70) and neurological outcome prediction (AUC 0.87 vs 0.75). Feature analysis revealed previously unknown factors to be associated with post-CA recovery. Results attest to the effectiveness of ML models for post-CA predictive modeling and suggest that PTS recorded in very early phase after resuscitation encode short-term outcome probabilities.

Balancing domain decomposition by constraints associated with subobjects

A simple variant of the BDDC preconditioner in which constraints are imposed on a selected set of subobjects (subdomain subedges, subfaces and vertices between pairs of subedges) is presented. We are able to show that the condition number of the preconditioner is bounded by $C \big(1+\log (L/h)\big)^2$, where $C$ is a constant, and $h$ and $L$ are the characteristic sizes of the mesh and the subobjects, respectively. As $L$ can be chosen almost freely, the condition number can theoretically be as small as $O(1)$. We will discuss the pros and cons of the preconditioner and its application to heterogeneous problems. Numerical results on supercomputers are provided.

A stable parareal-like method for the second order wave equation

A new parallel-in-time iterative method is proposed for solving the homogeneous second-order wave equation. The new method involves a coarse scale propagator, allowing for larger time steps, and a fine scale propagator which fully resolves the medium using finer spatial grid and shorter time steps. The fine scale propagator is run in parallel for short time intervals. The two propagators are coupled in an iterative way that resembles the standard parareal method developed by Lions, Maday and Turinici. We present a data-driven strategy in which the computed data gathered from each iteration are re-used to stabilize the coupling by minimizing the energy residual of the fine and coarse propagated solutions. An example of Marmousi model is provided to demonstrate the performance of the proposed method.

Single-shot 3D shape reconstruction using deep convolutional neural networks

A robust single-shot 3D shape reconstruction technique integrating the fringe projection profilometry (FPP) technique with the deep convolutional neural networks (CNNs) is proposed in this letter. The input of the proposed technique is a single FPP image, and the training and validation data sets are prepared by using the conventional multi-frequency FPP technique. Unlike the conventional 3D shape reconstruction methods which involve complex algorithms and intensive computation, the proposed approach uses an end-to-end network architecture to directly carry out the transformation of a 2D images to its corresponding 3D shape. Experiments have been conducted to demonstrate the validity and robustness of the proposed technique. It is capable of satisfying various 3D shape reconstruction demands in scientific research and engineering applications.

θ-parareal schemes

A weighted version of the parareal method for parallel-in-time computation of time dependent problems is presented. Linear stability analysis for a scalar weighing strategy shows that the new scheme may enjoy favorable stability properties with marginal reduction in accuracy at worse. More complicated matrix-valued weights are applied in numerical examples. The weights are optimized using information from past iterations, providing a systematic framework for using the parareal iterations as an approach to multiscale coupling. The advantage of the method is demonstrated using numerical examples, including some well-studied nonlinear Hamiltonian systems.

Understanding International Migration using Tensor Factorization

Understanding human migration is of great interest to demographers and social scientists. User generated digital data has made it easier to study such patterns at a global scale. Geo coded Twitter data, in particular, has been shown to be a promising source to analyse large scale human migration. But given the scale of these datasets, a lot of manual effort has to be put into processing and getting actionable insights from this data. In this paper, we explore feasibility of using a new tool, tensor decomposition, to understand trends in global human migration. We model human migration as a three mode tensor, consisting of (origin country, destination country, time of migration) and apply CP decomposition to get meaningful low dimensional factors. Our experiments on a large Twitter dataset spanning 5 years and over 100M tweets show that we can extract meaningful migration patterns.

Effective interactions, Fermi-Bose duality, and ground states of ultracold atomic vapors in tight de Broglie waveguides

Derivation of effective zero-range one-dimensional (1D) interactions between atoms in tight waveguides is reviewed, as is the Fermi-Bose mapping method for determination of exact and strongly-correlated states of ultracold bosonic and fermionic atomic vapors in such waveguides, including spin degrees of freedom. Odd-wave 1D interactions derived from 3D p-wave scattering are included as well as the usual even-wave interactions derived from 3D s-wave scattering, with emphasis on the role of 3D Feshbach resonances for selectively enhancing s-wave or p-wave interactions. A duality between 1D fermions and bosons with zero-range interactions suggested by Cheon and Shigehara is shown to hold for the effective 1D dynamics of a spinor Fermi gas with both even and odd-wave interactions and that of a spinor Bose gas with even and odd-wave interactions, with even(odd)-wave Bose coupling constants inversely related to odd(even)-wave Fermi coupling constants. Some recent applications of Fermi-Bose mapping to determination of many-body ground states of Bose gases and of both magnetically trapped, spin-aligned and optically trapped, spin-free Fermi gases are described, and a new generalized Fermi-Bose mapping is used to determine the phase diagram of ground-state total spin of the spinor Fermi gas as a function of the even and odd-wave coupling constants.
