Instability of dilute granular flow on rough slope

We study numerically the stability of granular flow on a rough slope in collisional flow regime in the two-dimension. We examine the density dependence of the flowing behavior in low density region, and demonstrate that the particle collisions stabilize the flow above a certain density in the parameter region where a single particle shows an accelerated behavior. Within this parameter regime, however, the uniform flow is only metastable and is shown to be unstable against clustering when the particle density is not high enough.

Spatio-temporal structure of traffic flow in a system with an open boundary

The spatio-temporal structure of traffic flow pattern is investigated under the open boundary condition using the optimal velocity (OV) model. The parameter region where the uniform solution is convectively unstable is determined. It is found that a localized perturbation triggers a linearly unstable oscillatory solution out of the linearly unstable uniform state, and it is shown that the oscillatory solution is also convectively stabilized. It is demonstrated that the observed traffic pattern near an on-ramp can be interpreted as the noise sustained structure in the open flow system.

Phase Changes in an Inelastic Hard Disk System with a Heat Bath under Weak Gravity for Granular Fluidization

We performed numerical simulations on a two-dimensional inelastic hard disk system under gravity with a heat bath to study the dynamics of granular fluidization. Upon increasing the temperature of the heat bath, we found that three phases, namely, the condensed phase, locally fluidized phase, and granular turbulent phase, can be distinguished using the maximum packing fraction and the excitation ratio, or the ratio of the kinetic energy to the potential energy. It is shown that the system behavior in each phase is very different from that of an ordinary vibrating bed.

Stability Analysis of Optimal Velocity Model for Traffic and Granular Flow under Open Boundary Condition

We analyzed the stability of the uniform flow solution in the optimal velocity model for traffic and granular flow under the open boundary condition. It was demonstrated that, even within the linearly unstable region, there is a parameter region where the uniform solution is stable against a localized perturbation. We also found an oscillatory solution in the linearly unstable region and its period is not commensurate with the periodicity of the car index space. The oscillatory solution has some features in common with the synchronized flow observed in real traffic.

Dynamical stability of the crack front line

Dynamical stability of the crack front line that propagates between two plates is studied numerically using the simple two-dimensional mass-spring model. It is demonstrated that the straight front line is unstable for low speed while it becomes stable for high speed. For the uniform model, the roughness exponent in the slower speed region is fairly constant around 0.4 and there seems to be a rough-smooth transition at a certain speed. For the inhomogeneous case with quenched randomness, the transition is gradual.

Absence of surface mode in a visco-elastic material with surface tension

The surface waves in the visco-elastic media with the surface tension are studied using the Voigt-Kelvin model of the visco-elasticity. It is shown that the surface mode of oscillation does not exist in the parameter region where the effect of surface tension is larger than that of the elastic stress at the surface unless the viscous stress masks the elastic stress in the bulk. In the region, the surface oscillation is suppressed and the oscillation beneath the surface diffuses after the pulse goes into the bulk. The experimental relevance of the present results is also discussed.
