Replica symmetry breaking transition of the weakly anisotropic Heisenberg spin glass in magnetic fields

The spin and the chirality orderings of the three-dimensional Heisenberg spin glass with the weak random anisotropy are studied under applied magnetic fields by equilibrium Monte Carlo simulations. A replica symmetry breaking transition occurs in the chiral sector accompanied by the simultaneous spin-glass order. The ordering behavior differs significantly from that of the Ising SG, despite the similarity in the global symmetry. Our observation is consistent with the spin-chirality decoupling-recoupling scenario of a spin-glass transition.

Ordering of the Heisenberg spin glass in two dimensions

The spin and the chirality orderings of the Heisenberg spin glass in two dimensions with the nearest-neighbor Gaussian coupling are investigated by equilibrium Monte Carlo simulations. Particular attention is paid to the behavior of the spin and the chirality correlation lengths. In order to observe the true asymptotic behavior, fairly large system size L\gsim 20 (L the linear dimension of the system) appears to be necessary. It is found that both the spin and the chirality order only at zero temperature. At high temperatures, the chiral correlation length stays shorter than spin correlation length, whereas at lower temperatures below the crossover temperature T_\times, the chiral correlation length exceeds the spin correlation length. The spin and the chirality correlation-length exponents are estimated above T_\times to be ν_SG=0.9+-0.2 and ν_CG=2.1+-0.3, respectively. These values are close to the previous estimates on the basis of the domain-wall-energy calculation. Discussion is given about the asymptotic critical behavior realized below T_\times.

Ordering of the Heisenberg Spin Glass in High Dimensions

Ordering of the Heisenberg spin glass with the nearest-neighbor Gaussian coupling is investigated by equilibrium Monte Carlo simulations in four and five dimensions. Ordering of the mean-field Heisenberg spin-glass is also studied for comparison. Particular attention is paid to the nature of the spin-glass and the chiral-glass orderings. Our numerical data suggest that, in five dimensions, the model exhibits a single spin-glass transition at a finite temperature, where the spin-glass order accompanying the simultaneous chiral-glass order sets in. In four dimensions, by contrast, the model exhibits a chiral-glass transition at a finite temperature, not accompanying the standard spin-glass order. The critical region associated with the chiral-glass transition, however, is very narrow, suggesting that dimension four is close to the marginal dimensionality.

Fluctuation-dissipation ratio of the Heisenberg spin glass

Fluctuation-dissipation (FD) relation of the three-dimensional Heisenberg spin glass with weak random anisotropy is studied by off-equilibrium Monte Carlo simulation. Numerically determined FD ratio exhibits a ``one-step-ike''behavior, the effective temperature of the spin-glass state being about twice the spin-glass transition temperature, $T_{\rm eff}\simeq 2T_g$, irrespective of the bath temperature. The results are discussed in conjunction with the recent experiment by Herisson and Ocio, and with the chirality scenario of spin-glass transition.

Nature of the vortex-glass order in strongly type-II superconductors

The stability and the critical properties of the three-dimensional vortex-glass order in random type-II superconductors with point disorder is investigated in the unscreened limit based on a lattice {\it XY} model with a uniform field. By performing equilibrium Monte Carlo simulations for the system with periodic boundary conditions, the existence of a stable vortex-glass order is established in the unscreened limit. Estimated critical exponents are compared with those of the gauge-glass model.

Anomalous Hall effect as a probe of the chiral order in spin glasses

Anomalous Hall effect arising from the noncoplanar spin configuration (chirality) is discussed as a probe of the chiral order in spin glasses. It is shown that the Hall coefficient yields direct information about the linear and nonlinear chiral susceptibilities of the spin sector, which has been hard to obtain experimentally from the standard magnetic measurements. Based on the chirality scenario of spin-glass transition, predictions are given on the behavior of the Hall resistivity of canonical spin glasses.

Chirality driven anomalous Hall effect in weak coupling regime

Anomalous Hall effect arising from non-trivial spin configuration (chirality) is studied based on the $s$-$d$ model. Considering a weak coupling case, the interaction is treated perturbatively. Scattering by normal impurities is included. Chirality is shown to drive locally Hall current and leads to overall Hall effect if there is a finite uniform chirality. This contribution is independent of the conventional spin-orbit contribution and shows distinct low temperature behavior. In mesoscopic spin glasses, chirality-induced anomalous Hall effect is expected below the spin-glass transition temperature. Measurement of Hall coefficient would be useful in experimentally confirming the chirality ordering.

Classical and quantum chiral order in frustrated XY magnets

Recent studies on the chiral order of regularly frustrated XY magnets are reviewed both in classical and quantum cases. In the classical case, chiral transition is a thermal one, while in the quantum case, it is a quantum phase transition. Importance of spatial dimensionality on the chiral order is clarified. Particular attention is paid to the possible ``spin-chirality decoupling'' phenomenon, and to the possible pure chiral phase of either thermal or quantum origin where the chirality exhibits a long-range order without the standard spin order.

Ordering of the Antiferromagnetic Heisenberg Model on a Pyrochlore Slab

Ordering of the geometrically frustrated two-dimensional Heisenberg antiferromagnet on a pyrochlore slab is studied by Monte Carlo simulations. The model is expected to serve as a reference system of SrCrGaO compound studied extensively. In sharp contrast to the kagomé Heisenberg antiferromagnet, the model exhibits locally non-coplanar spin structures at low temperatures, bearing nontrivial chiral degrees of freedom. We find that under certain conditions the model exhibits a novel Kosterlitz-Thouless-type transition at a finite temperature associated with these chiral degrees of freedom. Implications to experiments are discussed.

Spin and Chirality Orderings of Frustrated Magnets -- Stacked-Triangular Antiferromagnets and Spin Glasses

``Chirality'' is a multispin quantity representing the sense or the handedness of the noncollinear spin structures induced by spin frustration. Recent studies have revealed that the chirality often plays an important role in the ordering of certain frustrated magnets. Here I take up two such examples, stacked-triangular antiferromagnets and spin glasses, where the inherent chiral degree of freedom affects underlying physics and might lead to novel ordering phenomena. The first topic is the criticality of the magnetic phase transition of vector (i.e., XY or Heisenberg) antiferromagnets on the three-dimensional stacked-triangular lattice. The second topic is the nature of the spin-glass ordering. I will review the recent theoretical and experimental works on these topics, with particular emphasis on the important role played by the chirality.

Monte Carlo Studies of the Ordering of the Three-Dimensional Isotropic Heisenberg Spin Glass in Magnetic Fields

Spin and chirality orderings of the three-dimensional Heisenberg spin glass under magnetic fields are studied by large-scale equilibrium Monte Carlo simulations. It is found that the chiral-glass transition and the chiral-glass ordered state, which are essentially of the same character as their zero-field counterparts, occur under magnetic fields. The chiral-glass ordered state exhibits a one-step-like peculiar replica-symmetry breaking in the chiral sector, while it does not accompany the spin-glass order perpendicular to the applied field. Critical perperties of the chiral-glass transition are different from those of the standard Ising spin glass. Magnetic phase diagram of the model is constructed, which reveals that the chiral-glass state is quite robust against magnetic fields. The chiral-glass transition line has a character of the Gabay-Toulouse line of the mean-field model, yet its physical origin being entirely different. These numerical results are discussed in light of the recently developed spin-chirality decoupling-recoupling scenario. Implication to experimental phase diagram is also discussed.

Nature of the ordering of the three-dimensional XY spin glass

Spin and chirality orderings of a three-dimensional XY spin glass are studied by extensive Monte Carlo simulations. By calculating an appropriately defined spin-overlap distribution function, we show that the finite-temperature chiral-glass transition does not accompany the standard spin-glass order, giving support to the spin-chirality decoupling picture. Critical behavior of the chiral-glass transition turns out to be different from that of the Ising spin glass. The chiral-glass ordered state exhibits a one-step-like peculiar replica-symmetry breaking.

Aging Effect in Ceramic Superconductors

A three-dimensional lattice of the Josephson junctions with a finite self-conductance is employed to model ceramic superconductors. Using Monte Carlo simulations it is shown that the aging disappears in the strong screening limit. In the weeak screening regime aging is present even at low temperatures. For intermediate values of the self-inductance aging occurs at intermediate temperatures interval but is suppressed entirely at high and low temperatures. Our results are in good agreement with experiments.

Simulation Studies on the Stability of the Vortex-Glass Order

The stability of the three-dimensional vortex-glass order in random type-II superconductors with point disorder is investigated by equilibrium Monte Carlo simulations based on a lattice XY model with a uniform field threading the system. It is found that the vortex-glass order, which stably exists in the absence of screening, is destroyed by the screenng effect, corroborating the previous finding based on the spatially isotropic gauge-glass model. Estimated critical exponents, however, deviate considerably from the values reported for the gauge-glass model.

Dynamical Properties of Chiral-Glass Order in Ceramic High-Tc Superconductors

There recently accumulated growing numerical and experimental evidence that a novel glassy zero-field phase characterized by the spontaneously broken time-reversal symmetry, a chiral-glass phase, is realized in certain ceramic high-$T_c$ superconductors. Existence of frustration in zero external field, arising from the d-wave pairing symmetry of high-$T_c$ superconductors, is essential to realize this phase. In this paper, we study the dynamical critical properties of the chiral-glass transition by means of Monte Carlo simulations, based on a lattice {\it XY} model with finite screening. We perform a dynamical scaling analysis, and the results are discussed in conjunction with recent ac magnetic susceptibility and transport measurements on high-$T_c$ ceramics.

Chiral Glass Phase in Ceramic Superconductors

A three-dimensional lattice of the Josephson junctions with a finite self-conductance is employed to model the ceramic superconductors. By Monte Carlo simulations it is shown that the chiral glass phase is stable in three dimensions even under the influence of screening. The nonlinear ac susceptibility and the compensation effect are also studied. The compensation effect is shown to be due to the existence of the chiral glass phase. In agreement with experiments, this effect is demonstrated to be present in the ceramic superconductors which show the paramagnetic Meissner effect.
