Symmetry analysis with spin crystallographic groups: Disentangling effects free of spin-orbit coupling in emergent electromagnetism

Recent studies identified spin-order-driven phenomena such as spin-charge interconversion without relying on the relativistic spin-orbit interaction. Those physical properties can be prominent in systems containing light magnetic atoms due to sizable exchange splitting and may pave the way for realization of giant responses correlated with the spin degree of freedom. In this paper, we present a systematic symmetry analysis based on the spin crystallographic groups and identify the physical property of a vast number of magnetic materials up to 1500 in total. By decoupling the spin and orbital degrees of freedom, our analysis enables us to take a closer look into the relation between the dimensionality of spin structures and the resultant physical properties and to identify the spin and orbital contributions separately. In stark contrast to the established analysis with magnetic space groups, the spin crystallographic group manifests richer symmetry including spin-translation symmetry and leads to emergent responses. For representative examples, we discuss the geometrical nature of the anomalous Hall effect and magnetoelectric effect and classify the spin Hall effect arising from the nonrelativistic spin-charge coupling. Using the power of computational analysis, we apply our symmetry analysis to a wide range of magnets, encompassing complex magnets such as those with noncoplanar spin structures as well as collinear and coplanar magnets. We identify emergent multipoles relevant to physical responses and argue that our method provides a systematic tool for exploring sizable electromagnetic responses driven by spin order.

Nonlinear optical responses in superconductors under magnetic fields: quantum geometry and topological superconductivity

Noncentrosymmetric superconductors offer fascinating phenomena of quantum transport and optics such as nonreciprocal and nonlinear responses. Time-reversal symmetry breaking often plays an essential role in the emergence and enhancement of nonreciprocal transport. In this paper, we show the nonreciprocal optical responses in noncentrosymmetric superconductors arising from time-reversal symmetry breaking by demonstrating them in $s$-wave superconductors with a Rashba spin-orbit coupling and a magnetic field. Numerical results reveal the superconductivity-induced bulk photocurrent and second harmonic generation, which are forbidden at the zero magnetic field. We discuss the properties and mechanisms of the superconducting nonlinear responses emerging under the magnetic field. In particular, we investigate the magnetic-field dependence of the photocurrent conductivity and clarify the essential ingredients which give a contribution unique to superconductors under the magnetic field. This contribution is dominant in the low carrier density regime although the corresponding joint density of states is tiny. We attribute the enhancement to the quantum geometry. Moreover, the nonlinear conductivity shows peculiar sign reversal at the transition to the topological superconducting state. We propose a bulk probe of topological transition and quantum geometry in superconductors.

Bulk photovoltaic effect in antiferromagnet: Role of collective spin dynamics

Inspired by recent advancements in the bulk photovoltaic effect which can extend beyond the independent particle approximation (IPA), this study delves into the influence of collective spin dynamics in an antiferromagnetic on photocurrent generation using a time domain calculation. In the linear and photocurrent conductivity spectra, we observe peaks below the bandgap regime, attributed to the resonant contributions of collective modes, alongside broadband modifications resulting from off-resonant spin dynamics. Notably, the emergence of spin dynamics allows various types of photocurrent, which are absent in the IPA framework. Furthermore, we emphasize the importance of energy scale proximity between electronic and spin degrees of freedom in enabling efficient feedback between them. These findings offer new avenues for efficient energy harvesting and optoelectronic applications.

Algorithm for spin symmetry operation search

A spin space group provides a suitable way to fully exploit the symmetry of a spin arrangement with a negligible spin-orbit coupling. There has been a growing interest in applying spin symmetry analysis with the spin space group in the field of magnetism. However, there is no established algorithm to search for spin symmetry operations of the spin space group. This paper presents an exhaustive algorithm for determining spin symmetry operations of commensurate spin arrangements. The present algorithm searches for spin symmetry operations from the symmetry operations of a corresponding nonmagnetic crystal structure and determines their spin-rotation parts by solving a Procrustes problem. An implementation is distributed under a permissive free software license in spinspg v0.1.1: https://github.com/spglib/spinspg.

Emergent Magneto-multipoles and Nonlinear Responses of a Magnetic Hopfion

The three-dimensional emergent magnetic field $\textbf{B}^e$ of a magnetic hopfion gives rise to emergent magneto-multipoles in a similar manner to the multipoles of classical electromagnetic field. Here, we show that the nonlinear responses of a hopfion are characterized by its emergent magnetic toroidal moment ${T}^e_z = \frac{1}{2}\int (\textbf{r}\times \textbf{B}^e)_z dV$ and emergent magnetic octupole component ${\it Γ}^e =\int [(x^2+y^2)B^e_z - xz B^e_x - y z B^e_y] dV$. The hopfion exhibits nonreciprocal dynamics (nonlinear hopfion Hall effect) under an ac driving current applied along (perpendicular to) the direction of ${T}^e_z$. The sign of nonreciprocity and nonlinear Hall angle is determined by the polarity and chirality of hopfion. The nonlinear electrical transport induced by a magnetic hopfion is also discussed. This work reveals the vital roles of emergent magneto-multipoles in nonlinear hopfion dynamics and could stimulate further investigations on the dynamical responses of topological spin textures induced by emergent electromagnetic multipoles.

Effects of relaxation on photovoltaic effect and possibility of photocurrent within transparent region

We theoretically study photocurrents in metals that break both inversion $\mathcal{P}$ and $\mathcal{T}$ symmetries within the transparent region. We find that the system under the ac electric fields is well described with an effective Hamiltonian and the photocurrent is of the order of $\mathcal{O}(ω_J/γ)$ if the frequency of the induced current $ω_J$ and the scattering rate $γ$ satisfy $ω_J/γ\ll 1$, and vanishes in the limit of $ω_J/γ\to 0$. On the other hand, the effective Hamiltonian description indicates that nonvanishing photocurrent can appear even in the transparent region if the system is thin enough compared to the mean free path in the direction of the induced current (where $γ$ can be effectively regarded as 0). Candidate materials for the such photovoltaic effect within the transparent region include multiferroics breaking both $\mathcal{P}$ and $\mathcal{T}$ symmetries.

Nonlinear optical responses in noncentrosymmetric superconductors

The unique nonreciprocal responses of superconductors, which stem from the Cooper pairs' quantum condensation, have been attracting attention. Recently, theories of the second-order nonlinear response in noncentrosymmetric superconductors were formulated based on the Bogoliubov-de Gennes theory. In this paper, we study the mechanism and condition for second-order optical responses of time-reversal symmetric superconductors. The numerical results show the characteristic photocurrent and second harmonic generation in the superconducting state. However, the superconductivity-induced nonlinear optical responses disappear under some conditions on pair potential. We show that the coexistence of intraband and interband pairing is necessary for the second-order superconducting optical responses. In addition, the superconducting Berry curvature factor, which is related to a component of Berry curvature in the superconducting state, is essential for the nonlinear responses. Thus, we derived the microscopic conditions where the superconducting nonlinear response appears.

Nonreciprocal optical response in parity-breaking superconductors

Superconductivity, an emergence of a macroscopic quantum state, gives rise to unique electromagnetic responses leading to perfect shielding of magnetic field and zero electrical resistance. In this paper, we propose that superconductors with the space-inversion symmetry breaking host giant nonreciprocal optical phenomena, such as photocurrent generation and second harmonic generation. The nonreciprocal optical responses show divergent behaviors in the low-frequency regime and originate from two-fold indicators unique to parity-breaking superconductors, namely, the nonreciprocal superfluid density and the Berry curvature derivative. Furthermore, the mechanism and frequency dependence are closely tied to the preserved temporal symmetry in the superconductor. The relation is useful for probing the space-time structure of the superconducting symmetry. The indicators characterize the low-frequency property of nonreciprocal optical responses and hence quantify the performance of superconductors in nonreciprocal optics.

Nonreciprocal Meissner response in parity-mixed superconductors

The parity breaking gives rise to rich superconducting properties through the admixture of even and odd-parity Cooper pairs. A new light has been shed on parity-breaking superconductors by recent observations of nonreciprocal responses such as the nonlinear optical responses and the superconducting diode effect. In this Letter, we demonstrate that the nonreciprocal responses are characterized by a unidirectional correction to the superfluid density, which we call nonreciprocal superfluid density. This correction leads to the nonreciprocal Meissner effect, namely, asymmetric screening of magnetic fields due to the nonreciprocal magnetic penetration depth. Performing a microscopic analysis of an exotic superconductor UTe$_2$ and examining the temperature dependence and renormalization effect, we show that the nonreciprocal Meissner effect is useful to probe parity-mixing properties and gap structures in superconductors.

Superconducting piezoelectric effect

The magnetopiezoelectric effect (MPE) is a cross-coupling between an electric current and strain in metals with neither inversion symmetry nor time-reversal symmetry. Unlike the conventional piezoelectric effect, the MPE allows a piezoelectric response in superconductors, as we call the superconducting piezoelectric effect (SCPE). The SCPE may enable a piezoelectric response without Joule heating and provide a probe of exotic superconducting symmetry. In this paper, we propose a formulation of the SCPE and calculate both the MPE and SCPE in the two-dimensional noncentrosymmetric s-wave superconductor under an in-plane magnetic field. We find that the magnitude of the SCPE is comparable to the MPE. It is also clarified that finite total momentum of Cooper pairs in the helical superconducting state plays a crucial role in the SCPE.

Photocurrent response in parity-time symmetric current-ordered states

There is growing interest in the photo-induced generation of rectified current, namely photocurrent phenomenon. While the response was attributed to noncentrosymmetric structures of crystals, the parity violation accompanied by the magnetic ordering, that is, magnetic parity violation, is recently attracting attention as a platform for a photocurrent generator. In this paper, we investigate the photocurrent response in the current-ordered phase, realizing the magnetic parity violation without the spin degree of freedom, although prior studies focused on the parity-violating spin structure. The loop-current order breaks the inversion symmetry while preserving the parity-time-reversal symmetry. With a model of Sr$_2$IrO$_4$, we demonstrate the linearly and circularly polarized light-induced photocurrent responses in the current-ordered state. Each photocurrent has a distinct tolerance of the scattering rate according to the mechanism for the photocurrent creation. The predicted photocurrent response is comparable to that in prototypical semiconductors. We propose a probe to detect the hidden-ordered phase in Sr$_2$IrO$_4$ by the photocurrent response.

Chiral photocurrent in parity-violating magnet and enhanced response in topological antiferromagnet

Rectified electric current induced by irradiating light, so-called photocurrent, is an established phenomenon in optoelectronic physics. In this paper, we present a comprehensive classification of the photocurrent response arising from the parity violation in bulk systems. We clarify the contrasting role of $\mathcal{T}$- and $\mathcal{PT}$-symmetries and consequently find a new type of photocurrent phenomena characteristic of parity-violating magnets, intrinsic Fermi surface effect and gyration current. Especially, the gyration current is induced by the circularly-polarized light and it is the counterpart of the shift current caused by the linearly-polarized light. This photocurrent adds a new functionality of materials studied in various fields of condensed matter physics such as multiferroics and spintronics. A list of materials is provided. Furthermore, we show that the gyration current is strongly enhanced by topologically nontrivial band dispersion. On the basis of the microscopic analysis of Dirac models, we demonstrate the divergent photocurrent response and elucidate the importance of tilting of Dirac cones.

Nonlinear electric transport in odd-parity magnetic multipole systems: Application to Mn-based compounds

Violation of parity symmetry gives rise to various physical phenomena such as nonlinear transport and cross-correlated responses. In particular, the nonlinear conductivity has been attracting a lot of attentions in spin-orbit coupled semiconductors, superconductors, topological materials, and so on. In this paper we present theoretical study of the nonlinear conductivity in odd-parity magnetic multipole ordered systems whose $\mathcal{PT}$-symmetry is essentially distinct from the previously studied acentric systems. Combining microscopic formulation and symmetry analysis, we classify the nonlinear responses in the $\mathcal{PT}$-symmetric systems as well as $\mathcal{T}$-symmetric (non-magnetic) systems, and uncover nonlinear conductivity unique to the odd-parity magnetic multipole systems. A giant nonlinear Hall effect, nematicity-assisted dichroism and magnetically-induced Berry curvature dipole effect are proposed and demonstrated in a model for Mn-based magnets.

Symmetry analysis of current-induced switching of antiferromagnets

Antiferromagnets are robust to external electric and magnetic fields, and hence are seemingly uncontrollable. Recent studies, however, realized the electrical manipulations of antiferromagnets by virtue of the antiferromagnetic Edelstein effect. We present a general symmetry analysis of electrically switchable antiferromagnets based on group-theoretical approaches. Furthermore, we identify a direct relation between switchable antiferromagnets and the ferrotoroidic order. The concept of the ferrotoroidic order clarifies the unidirectional nature of switchable antiferromagnets and provides a criterion for the controllability of antiferromagnets. The scheme paves a way for perfect writing and reading of switchable antiferromagnets.

Group-theoretical classification of multipole order: emergent responses and candidate materials

The multipole moment is an established concept of electrons in solids. Entanglement of spin, orbital, and sublattice degrees of freedom is described by the multipole moment, and spontaneous multipole order is a ubiquitous phenomenon in strongly correlated electron systems. In this paper, we present group-theoretical classification theory of multipole order in solids. Intriguing duality between the real space and momentum space properties is revealed for odd-parity multipole order which spontaneously breaks inversion symmetry. Electromagnetic responses in odd-parity multipole states are clarified on the basis of the classification theory. A direct relation between the multipole moment and the magnetoelectric effect, Edelstein effect, magnetopiezoelectric effect, and dichromatic electron transport is demonstrated. More than 110 odd-parity magnetic multipole materials are identified by the group-theoretical analysis. Combining the list of materials with the classification tables of multipole order, we predict emergent responses of the candidate materials.

Theory of orbital magnetic quadrupole moment and magnetoelectric susceptibility

We derive a quantum-mechanical formula of the orbital magnetic quadrupole moment (MQM) in periodic systems by using the gauge-covariant gradient expansion. This formula is valid for insulators and metals at zero and finite temperature. We also prove a direct relation between the MQM and magnetoelectric (ME) susceptibility for insulators at zero temperature. It indicates that the MQM is a microscopic origin of the ME effect. Using the formula, we quantitatively estimate these quantities for room-temperature antiferromagnetic semiconductors BaMn$_2$As$_2$ and CeMn$_2$Ge$_{2 - x}$Si$_x$. We find that the orbital contribution to the ME susceptibility is comparable with or even dominant over the spin contribution.

Magnetic hexadecapole order and magnetopiezoelectric metal in Ba$_{1-x}$K$_x$Mn$_2$As$_2$

We study an odd-parity magnetic multipole order in Ba$_{1-x}$K$_x$Mn$_2$As$_2$ and related materials. Although BaMn$_2$As$_2$ is a seemingly conventional Mott insulator with G-type antiferromagnetic order, we identify the ground state as a magnetic hexadecapole ordered state accompanied by simultaneous time-reversal and space-inversion symmetry breaking. A symmetry argument and microscopic calculations reveal the ferroic ordering of leading magnetic hexadecapole moment and admixed magnetic quadrupole moment. Furthermore, we clarify electromagnetic responses characterizing the magnetic hexadecapole state of semiconducting BaMn$_2$As$_2$ and doped metallic systems. A magnetoelectric effect and antiferromagnetic Edelstein effect are shown. Interestingly, a counter-intuitive currentinduced nematic order occurs in the metallic state. The electric current along the \textit{z}-axis induces the \textit{xy}-plane nematicity in sharp contrast to the spontaneous nematic order in superconducting Febased 122-compounds. Thus, the magnetic hexadecapole state of doped BaMn$_2$As$_2$ is regarded as a magnetopiezoelectric metal. The anomalous responses stem from the peculiar symmetry of the parity-violating magnetic order. Other candidate materials for magnetic hexadecapole order are proposed.
