Tidal effects on radiation in gravitational shockwave collisions

We compute high frequency gravitational wave radiation in shockwave collisions of a light mass compact object with energy $μ_L$ off a heavy compact object (black hole) with energy $μ_H \gg μ_L$. A formal solution is obtained in terms of shockwave propagators that provide snapshots of $O(μ_Lμ_H^n)$ tidal response functions sensitive to classical and potentially semi-classical dynamics of black hole formation. In a perturbative expansion, the first nontrivial contribution of $O(μ_Lμ_H)$ is the emission of a graviton from the Lipatov vertex generated by the fusion of two reggeized gravitons. For graviton frequencies $ω\rightarrow 0$, the Lipatov amplitude reduces to the ultrarelativistic limit of the single-graviton exchange Weinberg amplitude. At $O(μ_Lμ_H^2)$, the Lipatov amplitude includes a piece accounting for the rescattering of the graviton off a reggeized graviton and another, corresponding to graviton emission from a vertex fusing three reggeized gravitons. These nontrivial contributions again simplify to the Weinberg radiative amplitude for two-graviton exchange in the soft limit. We highlight throughout double copy structures to gluon radiation in dilute-dense collisions of Yang-Mills shockwaves. We relate our shockwave results to the eikonal multiple scattering framework of Veneziano et al.

Statistical validation of calorimeter inpainting with generative diffusion priors

Localized detector inefficiencies produce incomplete calorimeter data that limit the ability to perform precision measurements. We address this problem in relativistic heavy-ion collisions from a Bayesian perspective using pretrained calorimeter diffusion models as priors to reconstruct the missing signal conditioned on surrounding measurements. In this work, we conduct a systematic comparison of several diffusion-based inpainting algorithms, whose performance is evaluated using Bayesian posterior diagnostics of energy response, spatial bias, and uncertainty calibration. The reconstruction fidelity is also analyzed across collision centralities and masked region sizes. This study establishes a general validation strategy for probabilistic reconstruction of missing detector information.

Squeezed-state radiation in shockwave scattering: QCD-Gravity double copy

Gluon and graviton radiation in strong field shockwave scattering are described by effective Lipatov vertices, with the graviton Lipatov vertex proportional to the bilinear of its QCD counterpart. We show here that the n-particle gluon radiation spectrum can be described as a generalized Susskind-Glogower (gSG) squeezed coherent state and discuss the properties of such squeezed states. The double copy structure of the radiative frameworks suggests that multi-graviton radiation can be similarly described as a gSG state. We examine the physical parameter space and show that very large squeezing parameters $\sim \ln({\bar n})$ (where ${\bar n}$ is the mean graviton occupancy) are feasible for nearly minimal uncertainty configurations of the gSG state. Quantum noise in the corresponding gravitational wave spectrum is enhanced above the sensitivity of current and future gravitational wave detectors. Our results point to the importance of a comprehensive study of the strong field Lipatov regime of gravitational radiation.

QCD-Gravity double copy in Regge asymptotics: from $2\rightarrow n$ amplitudes to radiation in shockwave collisions

These lectures discuss multi-particle production in QCD and in gravity at ultrarelativistic energies, their double copy relations, and strong parallels in emergent shockwave dynamics. Dispersive techniques are applied to derive the BFKL equation for multi-gluon production in Regge asymptotics. Identical methods apply in gravity and are captured by a gravitational Lipatov equation. The building blocks in both cases are Lipatov vertices and reggeized propagators satisfying double copy relations; in gravity, Weinberg's soft theorem is recovered as a limit of the Lipatov framework. BFKL evolution in QCD generates wee parton states of maximal occupancy characterized by an emergent semi-hard saturation scale. Renormalization group equations in the Color Glass Condensate (CGC) EFT describe wee parton correlations and their rapidity evolution. A shockwave picture of deeply inelastic scattering and hadron-hadron collisions follows, with multi-particle production described by Cutkosky's rules in strong time-dependent fields. Gluon radiation in the CGC EFT has a double copy in gravitational shockwave collisions, with a similar correspondence applicable between gluon and graviton shockwave propagators. Possible extensions of this semi-classical double copy are outlined for computing multi-particle production in gravitational shockwave collisions, self-force and tidal contributions, and classical and quantum noise in the focusing of geodesics.

QCD-Gravity double-copy in the Regge regime: shock wave propagators

In recent work, we demonstrated a double-copy relation between inclusive gluon radiation in shock wave collisions of ultrarelativistic nuclei and inclusive graviton radiation in trans-Planckian gravitational shock wave collisions. We compute here the corresponding gravitational shock wave propagators in general relativity and demonstrate that they too obey a double copy relation to gluon shock wave propagators computed previously. These results provide key input in a renormalization group approach towards computing the high frequency radiation spectrum in close black hole encounters.

Gravitational wave double copy of radiation from gluon shockwave collisions

In a recent paper, we showed that the gravitational wave spectrum from trans-Planckian shockwave scattering in Einstein gravity is determined by the gravitational Lipatov vertex expressed as the bilinear double copy $Γ^{μν} = \frac12 C^μC^ν- \frac12 N^μN^ν$ where $C^μ$ is the QCD Lipatov vertex and $N^μ$ is the QED soft photon factor. We show here that this result can be directly obtained by careful application of the classical color-kinematic duality to the spectrum obtained in gluon shockwave collisions.

Universal features of $ 2\to N$ scattering in QCD and gravity from shockwave collisions

A remarkable double copy relation of Einstein gravity to QCD in Regge asymptotics is $Γ^{μν}= \frac12C^μC^ν- \frac12N^μN^ν$, where $Γ^{μν}$ is the gravitational Lipatov vertex in the $2\to 3$ graviton scattering amplitude, $C^μ$ its Yang-Mills counterpart, and $N^μ$ the QED bremssstrahlung vertex. In QCD, the Lipatov vertex is a fundamental building block of the BFKL equation describing $2\to N$ scattering of gluons at high energies. Likewise, the gravitational Lipatov vertex is a key ingredient in a 2-D effective field theory framework describing trans-Planckian $2\to N$ graviton scattering. We construct a quantitative correspondence between a semi-classical Yang-Mills framework for radiation in gluon shockwave collisions and its counterpart in general relativity. In particular, we demonstrate the Lipatov double copy in a dilute-dilute approximation corresponding to $R_{S,L}$, $R_{S,H}$ $ \ll b$, with $R_{S,L}$, $R_{S,H}$ the respective emergent Schwarzchild radii generated in shockwave collisions and $b$ is the impact parameter. We outline extensions of the correspondence developed here to the dilute-dense computation of gravitational wave radiation in close vicinity of one of the black holes, the construction of graviton propagators in the shockwave background, and a renormalization group approach to compute $2\rightarrow N$ amplitudes that incorporates graviton reggeization and coherent graviton multiple scattering.

Wee partons in QCD and gravity: double copy and universality

We discuss a quantitative "double copy" between radiation from shockwave collisions in Einstein gravity and in QCD. The correspondence extends to $2\rightarrow N$ amplitudes in Regge asymptotics. The classicalization and unitarization of these amplitudes at maximal occupancy, corresponding to black hole and Color Glass Condensate (CGC) states respectively, are described by the emergent Goldstone dynamics of wee partons. We outline some consequences of the universal dynamics on both sides of the correspondence.

Finding Adversarial Inputs for Heuristics using Multi-level Optimization

Production systems use heuristics because they are faster or scale better than their optimal counterparts. Yet, practitioners are often unaware of the performance gap between a heuristic and the optimum or between two heuristics in realistic scenarios. We present MetaOpt, a system that helps analyze heuristics. Users specify the heuristic and the optimal (or another heuristic) as input, and MetaOpt automatically encodes these efficiently for a solver to find performance gaps and their corresponding adversarial inputs. Its suite of built-in optimizations helps it scale its analysis to practical problem sizes. To show it is versatile, we used MetaOpt to analyze heuristics from three domains (traffic engineering, vector bin packing, and packet scheduling). We found a production traffic engineering heuristic can require 30% more capacity than the optimal to satisfy realistic demands. Based on the patterns in the adversarial inputs MetaOpt produced, we modified the heuristic to reduce its performance gap by 12.5$\times$. We examined adversarial inputs to a vector bin packing heuristic and proved a new lower bound on its performance.

Solving Max-Min Fair Resource Allocations Quickly on Large Graphs

We consider the max-min fair resource allocation problem. The best-known solutions use either a sequence of optimizations or waterfilling, which only applies to a narrow set of cases. These solutions have become a practical bottleneck in WAN traffic engineering and cluster scheduling, especially at larger problem sizes. We improve both approaches: (1) we show how to convert the optimization sequence into a single fast optimization, and (2) we generalize waterfilling to the multi-path case. We empirically show our new algorithms Pareto-dominate prior techniques: they produce faster, fairer, and more efficient allocations. Some of our allocators also have theoretical guarantees: they trade off a bounded amount of unfairness for faster allocation. We have deployed our allocators in Azure's WAN traffic engineering pipeline, where we preserve solution quality and achieve a roughly $3\times$ speedup.

Exact Large Charge in $\mathcal{N}=4$ SYM and Semiclassical String Theory

In four-dimensional $\mathcal{N}=4$ super Yang-Mills theory with gauge group $SU(N)$, we present a closed-form solution for a family of integrated four-point functions involving stress tensor multiplet composites of arbitrary R-charge. These integrated correlators are shown to be equivalent to a one-dimensional semi-infinite lattice of harmonic oscillators with nearest-neighbor interactions, evolving over the fundamental domain of $SL(2,\mathbb{Z})$. The solution, exceptionally simple in an $SL(2,\mathbb{Z})$-invariant eigenbasis, is exact in the R-charge $p$, rank $N$, and complexified gauge coupling $τ$. This permits a systematic and non-perturbative large charge expansion for any $N$ and $τ$. Especially novel is a double-scaled "gravity regime" in which $p \sim N^2 \gg 1$, holographically dual to a large charge regime of semiclassical type IIB string theory in AdS$_5\, \times$ S$^5$. Our results in this limit provide a holographic computation of integrated semiclassical string amplitudes at arbitrary string coupling, including an emergent string scale with a large charge dressing factor. We compare to extremal correlators in superconformal QCD, for which we predict new genus expansions at large charge scaling with $N$.

M-theory on $AdS_4\times S^7$ at 1-loop and beyond

We study graviton scattering on $AdS_4\times S^7$, which is dual to the stress tensor multiplet four-point function in the maximally supersymmetric 3d $U(N)_1\times U(N)_{-1}$ ABJM theory. We compute 1-loop corrections to this holographic correlator coming from Witten diagrams with supergravity $R$ and higher derivative $R^4$ vertices, up to contact term ambiguities, and find that the flat space limit matches the corresponding terms in the 11d M-theory S-matrix. We then use supersymmetric localization to show that all the 1-loop contact terms vanish, as was previously observed for the $AdS_4\times S^7/\mathbb{Z}_2$ theory dual to $U(N)_2\times U(N)_{-2}$ ABJM. Finally, we use the recent localization results of Gaiotto and Abajian, as inspired by twisted M-theory, to compute all the short OPE coefficients in correlators of the stress tensor multiplet and the next lowest half-BPS operator, which we find saturate the bootstrap bounds on these mixed correlators for all $N$.

Integrated Correlators in $\mathcal{N}=4$ SYM via $SL(2,\mathbb{Z})$ Spectral Theory

We perform a systematic study of integrated four-point functions of half-BPS operators in four-dimensional $\mathcal{N}=4$ super Yang-Mills theory with gauge group $SU(N)$. These observables, defined by a certain spacetime integral of $\langle\mathcal{O}_2\mathcal{O}_2\mathcal{O}_p\mathcal{O}_p\rangle$ where $\mathcal{O}_p$ is a superconformal primary of charge $p$, are known to be computable by supersymmetric localization, yet are non-trivial functions of the complexified gauge coupling $τ$. We find explicit and remarkably simple results for several classes of these observables, exactly as a function of $N$ and $τ$. Their physical and formal properties are greatly illuminated upon employing the $SL(2,\mathbb{Z})$ spectral decomposition: in this S-duality-invariant eigenbasis, the integrated correlators are fixed simply by polynomials in the spectral parameter. These polynomials are determined recursively by linear algebraic equations relating different $N$ and $p$, such that all integrated correlators are ultimately fixed in terms of the integrated stress tensor multiplets in the $SU(2)$ theory. Our computations include the full matrix of integrated correlators at low values of $p$, and a certain infinite class involving operators of arbitrary $p$. The latter satisfy an open lattice chain equation for all $N$, reminiscent of the Toda equation obeyed by extremal correlators in $\mathcal{N}=2$ superconformal theories. We compute ensemble averages of these observables and analyze our solutions at large $N$, confirming and predicting features of semiclassical AdS$_5\, \times$ S$^5$ supergravity amplitudes.

ABJM at Strong Coupling from M-theory, Localization, and Lorentzian Inversion

We study the stress tensor multiplet four-point function in the 3d maximally supersymmetric ABJ(M) theory with Chern-Simons level $k=2$, which in the large $N$ limit is holographically dual to weakly coupled M-theory on $AdS_4\times S^7/\mathbb{Z}_2$. We use the Lorentzian inversion to compute the 1-loop correction to this holographic correlator coming from Witten diagrams with supergravity $R$ and the first higher derivative correction $R^4$ vertices, up to a finite number of contact terms that contribute to low spins where the inversion formula does not converge. We find a precise match with the corresponding terms in the 11d M-theory S-matrix by taking the flat space limit, which is not sensitive to these contact terms. We then conjecturally fix these contact terms by analytically continuing the inversion formula below its expected range of convergence, and verify this conjecture using supersymmetric localization. Finally, we compare some of the 1-loop CFT data to non-perturbative in $N$ bounds from the numerical conformal bootstrap, which we compute at unprecedently high accuracy, and find that the 1-loop corrections saturate the bounds in the large $N$ regime, which extends the previously observed match at tree level.

6d (2,0) and M-theory at 1-loop

We study the stress tensor multiplet four-point function in the 6d maximally supersymmetric $(2,0)$ $A_{N-1}$ and $D_N$ theories, which have no Lagrangian description, but in the large $N$ limit are holographically dual to weakly coupled M-theory on $AdS_7\times S^4$ and $AdS_7\times S^4/\mathbb{Z}_2$, respectively. We use the analytic bootstrap to compute the 1-loop correction to this holographic correlator coming from Witten diagrams with supergravity $R$ and the first higher derivative correction $R^4$ vertices, which is the first 1-loop correction computed for a non-Lagrangian theory. We then take the flat space limit and find precise agreement with the corresponding terms in the 11d M-theory S-matrix, some of which we compute for the first time using two-particle unitarity cuts.

Complex Sachdev-Ye-Kitaev model in the double scaling limit

We solve for the exact energy spectrum, 2-point and 4-point functions of the complex SYK model, in the double scaling limit at all energy scales. This model has a $U(1)$ global symmetry. The analysis shows how to incorporate a chemical potential in the chord diagram picture, and we present results for the various observables also at a given fixed charge sector. In addition to matching to the spectral asymmetry, we consider an analogous asymmetry measure of the 2-point function obeying a non-trivial dependence on the operator's dimension. We also provide the chord diagram structure for an SYK-like model that has a $U(M)$ global symmetry at any disorder realization. We then show how to exactly compute the effect of inserting very heavy operators, with formally infinite conformal dimension. The latter separate the gravitational spacetime into several parts connected by an interface, whose properties are exactly computable at all scales. In particular, light enough states can still go between the spaces. This behavior has a simple description in the chord diagram picture.

On the KKLT Goldstino

We construct general asymptotically Klebanov-Strassler solutions of a five dimensional $SU(2) \times SU(2) \times \mathbb{Z}_2\times \mathbb{Z}_{2R}$ truncation of IIB supergravity on $ T^{1,1} $, that break supersymmetry. This generalizes results in the literature for the $SU(2) \times SU(2) \times \mathbb{Z}_2\times U(1)_R$ case, to a truncation that is general enough to capture the deformation of the conifold in the IR. We observe that there are only two SUSY-breaking modes even in this generalized set up, and by holographically computing Ward identities, we confirm that only one of them corresponds to spontaneous breaking: this is the mode triggered by smeared anti-D3 branes at the tip of the warped throat. Along the way, we address some aspects of the holographic computation of one-point functions of marginal and relevant operators in the cascading gauge theory. Our results strengthen the evidence that {\it if} the KKLT construction is meta-stable, it is indeed a spontaneously SUSY-broken (and therefore bona fide) vacuum of string theory.
