Gauge dynamics in the PNJL model: Color neutrality and Casimir scaling

We discuss a gauge-invariant prescription to take the mean-field approximation self-consistently in the PNJL model (Nambu--Jona-Lasinio model with the Polyakov loop). We first address the problem of non-vanishing color density in normal quark matter, which is an artifact arising from gauge-fixed treatment of the Polyakov loop mean-fields. We then confirm that the gauge average incorporated in our prescription resolves this problem and ensures color neutrality. We point out that the proposed method has an advantage in computing the expectation value of any function of the Polyakov loop matrix. We discuss the Casimir scaling as an immediate application of the method.

Strongly interacting Fermi systems in 1/N expansion: From cold atoms to color superconductivity

We investigate the 1/N expansion proposed recently as a strategy to include quantum fluctuation effects in the nonrelativistic, attractive Fermi gas at and near unitarity. We extend the previous results by calculating the next-to-leading order corrections to the critical temperature along the whole BCS-BEC crossover. We demonstrate explicitly that the extrapolation from the mean-field approximation, based on the $1/N$ expansion, provides a useful approximation scheme only on the BCS side of the crossover. We then apply the technique to the study of strongly interacting relativistic many-fermion systems. Having in mind the application to color superconductivity in cold dense quark matter, we develop, within a simple model, a formalism suitable to compare the effects of order parameter fluctuations in phases with different pairing patterns. Our main conclusion is that the relative correction to the critical temperature is to a good accuracy proportional to the mean-field ratio of the critical temperature and the chemical potential. As a consequence, it is significant even rather deep in the BCS regime, where phenomenologically interesting values of the quark-quark coupling are expected. Possible impact on the phase diagram of color-superconducting quark matter is discussed.

BCS-BEC crossover in a relativistic superfluid and its significance to quark matter

The character change of a superfluid state due to the variation of the attractive force is investigated in the relativistic framework with a massive fermion. Two crossovers are found. One is a crossover from the usual BCS state to the Bose-Einstein condensation (BEC) of bound fermion pairs. The other is from the BEC to the relativistic Bose-Einstein condensation (RBEC) of nearly massless bound pairs where antiparticles as well as particles dominate the thermodynamics. Possible realization of the BEC and RBEC states in the quark matter is also pointed out.

Role of Strange Quark Mass in Pairing Phenomena in QCD

We study the dynamical effect of strange quark mass as well as kinematical one on the color-flavor unlocking transition using a NJL model. Paying a special attention to the multiplicity of gap parameters, we derive an exact formula of the effective potential for 5-gap parameters. Based on this, we discuss that the unlocking transition might be of second order rather than of first order as is predicted by a simple kinematical criterion for the unlocking.

Improved Schwinger-Dyson approach to pairing phenomena and QCD phase diagram

Phase structure and phase transitions in dense QCD are studied using the Cornwall-Jackiw-Tomboulis (CJT) potential in the improved ladder approximation. The gap function, the condensation energy and the structure of Cooper pairs are investigated at finite temperature and density. Due to strong coupling effects at low densities, the gap, critical temperature and their ratio deviate from the weak coupling values. It is shown that the internal structure of Cooper pairs are robust against the thermal effects, despite the fact that the pairs are strongly correlated near the critical temperature. Also, the effect of the strange quark mass, Ms on the phase diagram is examined using a simple kinematical criterion. We discuss the behavior of the unlocking line, on which the CFL turns into the 2SC, through the variation of Ms.

Color Superconductivity in Schwinger-Dyson Approach -- Strange Quark Mass and Color-Flavor Unlocking Line --

Phase structure and phase transitions in dense QCD are studied using the Schwinger-Dyson (SD) method in the improved ladder approximation. We construct the Cornwall-Jackiw-Tomboulis (CJT) effective potentials at finite temperature for two types of pairing ansatz, namely the Color-Flavor locking (CFL) state and the two flavor superconducting (2SC) state. Strong coupling effects at low densities, such as the off-Fermi surface and antiquarks contribution to the pairing gap due to the large effective coupling, make the gap, critical temperature and those ratio deviate from those weak coupling values. Nevertheless, the ratio of the physical quantity for the CFL and that for the 2SC does not differ so much from the weak coupling value, as long as the pairing interaction is taken to be the same for the both cases. As a consequence, the CFL state always dominates over 2SC state and the critical temperatures to quark-gluon plasma (QGP) from both states coincides in the chiral limit. The energy gain in the CFL state relative to the 2SC state gets smaller towards the critical line dividing (mu, T) plane into the QGP and CFL phases, and thus small perturbations can remove the degeneracy of these critical lines. As one of such perturbations, the effect of the strange quark mass m_s on the quark-pairing is examined. In particular, using a simple kinematical criterion, we discuss the behaviour of the ``color-flavor unlocking line'' on which the CFL phase turns into the 2SC phase, against the variation of m_s.

Structural Change of Cooper Pairs and Momentum-dependent Gap in Color Superconductivity

The two-flavor color superconductivity is studied over a wide range of baryon density with a single model. We pay a special attention to the spatial-momentum dependence of the gap and to the spatial-structure of Cooper pairs. At extremely high baryon density (O(10^{10} rho_0) with rho_0 being the normal nuclear matter density), our model becomes equivalent to the usual perturbative QCD treatment and the gap is shown to have a sharp peak near the Fermi surface due to the weak-coupling nature of QCD. On the other hand, the gap is a smooth function of the momentum at lower densities (O(10 rho_0)) due to strong color magnetic and electric interactions. To study the structural change of Cooper pairs from high density to lower density, quark correlation in the color superconductor is studied both in the momentum space and in the coordinate space. The size of the Cooper pair is shown to become comparable to the averaged inter-quark distance at low densities. Also, effects of the momentum-dependent running coupling and the antiquark pairing, which are both small at high density, are shown to be non-negligible at low densities. These features are highly contrasted to the standard BCS superconductivity in metals.
