Quantum Anomalous Hall Effect in Kagome Ice

An anomalous Hall insulator without magnetic long-range ordering is theoretically reported in the absence of the relativistic spin-orbit coupling. It is realized in itinerant electrons coupled with the Ising spins on a <111> kagome plane of pyrochlore spin ice in applied magnetic field. We find that the kagome-ice type local spin correlation in the magnetization plateau state opens a charge gap without magnetic ordering, which results in quantization of the Hall conductivity. By Monte Carlo simulation, we identify the anomalous Hall insulating region in the magnetic phase diagram, in addition to another anomalous Hall insulator in a fully-saturated state.

Dirac half-metal in a triangular ferrimagnet

An idea is proposed for realizing a fully spin-polarized Dirac semimetal in frustrated itinerant magnets. We show that itinerant electrons on a triangular lattice exhibit the Dirac cone dispersion with half-metallic behavior in the presence of a three-sublattice ferrimagnetic order. The Dirac nodes have the same structure as those of graphene. By variational calculation and Monte Carlo simulation, we demonstrate that the ferrimagnetic order with the Dirac node spontaneously emerges in a simple Kondo lattice model with Ising anisotropy. The realization will be beneficial for spintronics as a candidate for spin-current generator.

Magnetic Order and Charge Disproportionation in a Spin-ice type Kondo Lattice Model: Large Scale Monte Carlo Study

Phase diagram of a spin-ice type Kondo lattice model, potentially relevant to metallic pyrochlore oxides, is obtained by the Monte Carlo simulation implementing the polynomial expansion technique up to the system size with 2048 sites. We identified a new 32-sublattice magnetic phase with concomitant charge disproportionation, along with other phases such as two-in two-out and all-in/all-out orders. The spin and charge pattern can be switched by external magnetic field to a different one accompanied by a half magnetization plateau.

Thermally-induced magnetic phases in an Ising spin Kondo lattice model on a kagome lattice at 1/3-filling

Numerical investigation on the thermodynamic properties of an Ising spin Kondo lattice model on a kagome lattice is reported. By using Monte Carlo simulation, we investigated the magnetic phases at 1/3-filling. We identified two successive transitions from high-temperature paramagnetic state to a Kosterlitz-Thouless-like phase in an intermediate temperature range and to a partially disordered phase at a lower temperature. The partially disordered state is characterized by coexistence of antiferromagnetic hexagons and paramagnetic sites with period $\sqrt3 \times \sqrt3$. We compare the results with those for the triangular lattice case.

Partial disorder in an Ising-spin Kondo lattice model on a triangular lattice

Phase diagram of an Ising-spin Kondo lattice model on a triangular lattice near 1/3-filling is investigated by Monte Carlo simulation. We identify a partially disordered phase with coexistence of magnetic order and paramagnetic moments, which was unstable in two-dimensional Ising models with localized spins only. The partial disorder emerges in the competing regime between a twosublattice stripe phase and three-sublattice ferrimagnetic phase, at finite temperatures above an electronic phase separation. The peculiar magnetic structure accompanies a charge order and develops a gap in the electronic structure. The results manifest a crucial role of the nonperturbative interplay between spin and charge degrees of freedom in stabilizing the partial disorder.

Non-Kondo mechanism for resistivity minimum in spin ice conduction systems

We present a mechanism of resistivity minimum in conduction electron systems coupled with localized moments, which is distinguished from the Kondo effect. Instead of the spin-flip process in the Kondo effect, electrons are elastically scattered by local spin correlations which evolve in a particular way under geometrical frustration as decreasing temperature. This is demonstrated by the cellular dynamical mean-field theory for a spin-ice type Kondo lattice model on a pyrochlore lattice. Peculiar temperature dependences of the resistivity, specific heat, and magnetic susceptibility in the non-Kondo mechanism are compared with the experimental data in metallic Ir pyrochlore oxides.

Application of polynomial-expansion Monte Carlo method to a spin-ice Kondo lattice model

We present the results of Monte Carlo simulation for a Kondo lattice model in which itinerant electrons interact with Ising spins with spin-ice type easy-axis anisotropy on a pyrochlore lattice. We demonstrate the efficiency of the truncated polynomial expansion algorithm, which enables a large scale simulation, in comparison with a conventional algorithm using the exact diagonalization. Computing the sublattice magnetization, we show the convergence of the data with increasing the number of polynomials and truncation distance.

Quantum Monte Carlo study of the formation of molecular polarizations and the antiferroelectric ordering in squaric acid crystals

Effects of geometrical frustration and quantum fluctuation are theoretically investigated for the proton ordering in a quasi-two-dimensional hydrogen-bonded system, squaric acid crystal. We elucidate the phase diagram for an effective model, the transverse-field Ising model on a frustrated checkerboard lattice, by using quantum Monte Carlo simulation. A crossover to liquidlike paraelectric state with well-developed molecular polarizations is identified, distinguishably from long-range ordering. Emergence of long-range order from the liquidlike state exhibits peculiar aspects originating from the lifting of quasi-macroscopic degeneracy, such as colossal enhancement of the transition temperature and a vanishingly small anomaly in the specific heat.

Metal-insulator transition caused by the coupling to localized charge-frustrated systems under ice-rule local constraint

We report the results of our theoretical and numerical study on electronic and transport properties of fermion systems with charge frustration. We consider an extended Falicov-Kimball model in which itinerant spinless fermions interact repulsively by U with localized particles whose distribution satisfies a local constraint under geometrical frustration, the so-called ice rule. We numerically calculate the density of states, optical conductivity, and inverse participation ratio for the models on the pyrochlore, checkerboard, and kagome lattices, and discuss the nature of metal-insulator transitions at commensurate fillings. As a result, we show that the ice-rule local constraint leads to several universal features in the electronic structure; a charge gap opens at a considerably small U compared to the bandwidth, and the energy spectrum approaches a characteristic form in the large U limit, that is, the noninteracting tight-binding form in one dimension or the $δ$-functional peak. In the large U region, the itinerant fermions are confined in the macroscopically-degenerate ice-rule configurations, which consist of a bunch of one-dimensional loops: We call this insulating state the charge ice. On the other hand, transport properties are much affected by the geometry and dimensionality of lattices; e.g., the pyrochlore lattice model exhibits a transition from a metallic to the charge-ice insulating state by increasing U, while the checkerboard lattice model appears to show Anderson localization before opening a gap. Meanwhile, in the kagome lattice case, we do not obtain clear evidence of Anderson localization. Our results elucidate the universality and diversity of phase transitions to the charge-ice insulator in fully frustrated lattices.

Quantum melting of charge ice and non-Fermi-liquid behavior: An exact solution for the extended Falicov-Kimball model in the ice-rule limit

An exact solution is obtained for a model of itinerant electrons coupled to ice-rule variables on the tetrahedron Husimi cactus, an analogue of the Bethe lattice of corner-sharing tetrahedra. It reveals a quantum critical point with the emergence of non-Fermi-liquid behavior in melting of the "charge ice" insulator. The electronic structure is compared with the numerical results for the pyrochlore-lattice model to elucidate the physics of electron systems interacting with the tetrahedron ice rule.
