Momentum-Dependent Spin Splitting by Collinear Antiferromagnetic Ordering

We clarify the macroscopic symmetry and microscopic model-parameter conditions for emergence of spin-split electronic band structure in collinear antiferromagnets without atomic spin-orbit coupling. By using the microscopic multipole descriptions, we elucidate the fundamental degree of freedom in a cluster unit of an antiferromagnet giving rise to an effective spin-orbit interaction through the anisotropic kinetic motions of electrons. We show a correspondence of the ordering patterns and resultant momentum-dependent spin splitting for 32 crystallographic point groups after demonstrating two intuitive examples of four-sublattice pyrochlore and tetragonal systems. Our study unveils potential features of collinear antiferromagnets with considerably weak spin-orbit coupling in light-element materials and 3$d$ transition metal oxides, which can be utilized for a spin-current generation by electric (thermal) current and a magneto-striction effect.

Time-reversal symmetry breaking superconductivity in hole-doped monolayer MoS$_{2}$

We investigate the nature of the time-reversal breaking pairing state in the hole-doped monolayer MoS$_{2}$ on the basis of the realistic three-orbital attractive Hubbard-like model with the atomic spin-orbit coupling. Due to the multi-band features arising from the Mo $d$ orbitals in the noncentrosymmetric crystal structure, the Lifshitz transition takes place upon hole doping. Across the Lifshitz transition point, the sign of the relative phase between the Cooper-pair components drastically changes, leading to the emergence of the time-reversal breaking phase with complex gap functions. It is shown that this intriguing pairing state is characterized by the finite momentum-space distributions of the orbital and spin angular momentum with three-fold rotational symmetry on the Fermi-surface pockets around K and K$'$ points. The present mechanism for the time-reversal breaking superconductivity can ubiquitously be applied to spin-orbit-coupled metals in noncentrosymmetric crystal structures.

Magnetic Vortex induced by Nonmagnetic Impurity in Ferromagnets: Magnetic Multipole and Toroidal around the Vacancy

We report our theoretical study on nucleation of a magnetic vortex around a nonmagnetic impurity doped into ferromagnets. The mechanism lies in the asymmetric Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction arising from the breaking of spatial inversion symmetry by the impurity. By using the spin-wave analysis and Monte Carlo simulations, we show that the asymmetric interaction induces a magnetic vortex with nonzero vorticity $l=+1$. The vortex is stabilized even for less frustration in exchange interactions and in the absence of an external magnetic field. We also find that the magnetic vortex is characterized by magnetic multipoles according to its vorticity and helicity. We demonstrate a potential realization of such a magnetic vortex by considering a monolayer ferromagnet on a nonmagnetic substrate, which results in the magnetic monopole and toroidal dipole.

Spin current generation in organic antiferromagnets

Spin current--a flow of electron spins without a charge current--is an ideal information carrier free from Joule heating for electronic devices. The celebrated spin Hall effect, which arises from the relativistic spin-orbit coupling, enables us to generate and detect spin currents in inorganic materials and semiconductors, taking advantage of their constituent heavy atoms. In contrast, organic materials consisting of molecules with light elements have been believed to be unsuited for spin current generation. Here we show that a class of organic antiferromagnets with checker-plate type molecular arrangements can serve as a spin current generator by applying a thermal gradient or an electric field, even with vanishing spin-orbit coupling. Our findings provide another route to create a spin current distinct from the conventional spin Hall effect and open a new field of spintronics based on organic magnets having advantages of small spin scattering and long lifetime.

Electric Toroidal Quadrupoles in Spin-Orbit Coupled Metal Cd$_2$Re$_2$O$_7$

We report our theoretical results on the order parameters for the pyrochlore metal Cd$_2$Re$_2$O$_7$, which undergoes enigmatic phase transitions with inversion symmetry breaking. By carefully examining active electronic degrees of freedom based on the lattice symmetry, we propose that two parity-breaking phases at ambient pressure are described by unconventional multipoles, electric toroidal quadrupoles (ETQs) with different components, $x^2-y^2$ and $3z^2-r^2$, in the pyrochlore tetrahedral unit. We elucidate that the ETQs are activated by bond or spin-current order on Re-Re bonds. Our ETQ scenario provides a key to reconcile the experimental contradictions, by measuring ETQ specific phenomena, such as peculiar spin splittings in the electronic band structure, magneto-current effect, and nonreciprocal transport under a magnetic field.

Classification of atomic-scale multipoles under crystallographic point groups and application to linear response tensors

Four types of atomic-scale multipoles, electric, magnetic, magnetic toroidal, and electric toroidal multipoles, give a complete set to describe arbitrary degrees of freedom for coupled charge, spin, and orbital of electrons. We here present a systematic classification of these multipole degrees of freedom towards the application in condensed matter physics. Starting from the multipole description under the rotation group in real space, we generalize the concept of multipoles in momentum space with the spin degree of freedom. We show how multipoles affect the electronic band structures and linear responses, such as the magneto-electric effect, magneto-current (magneto-gyrotropic) effect, spin conductivity, Piezo-electric effect, and so on. Moreover, we exhibit a complete table to represent the active multipoles under 32 crystallographic point groups. Our comprehensive and systematic analyses will give a foundation to identify enigmatic electronic order parameters and a guide to evaluate peculiar cross-correlated phenomena in condensed matter physics from microscopic point of view.

Theory of superconductivity in hole-doped monolayer MoS$_{2}$

We theoretically investigate the Cooper-pair symmetry to be realized in hole-doped monolayer MoS$_2$ by solving linearized BCS gap equations on the three-orbital attractive Hubbard-like model in the presence of the atomic spin-orbit coupling. In hole-doped monolayer MoS$_2$, both spin-orbit coupling and the multi-orbital effects are more prominent than those of electron-doped system. Near the valence band edge, the Fermi surfaces are composed of three different types of hole pockets, namely, one mainly consisting of the almost spin-degenerate $|d_{z^{2}}\rangle$ orbital near $Γ$ point, and the others of the spin-split upper and lower bands near ${\rm K}$ and ${\rm K}'$ points arising from the $|d_{x^{2}-y^{2}}\rangle$ and $|d_{xy}\rangle$ orbitals. The number of relevant Fermi pockets increases with increase of the doping. At very low doping, the upper split bands of $|d_{x^{2}-y^{2}}\rangle$ and $|d_{xy}\rangle$ are concerned, yielding extremely low $T_{\rm c}$ due to small density of states of the split bands. For further doping, the conventional spin-singlet state (SS) appears in the $Γ$ pocket, which has a mixture of the spin-triplet (orbital-singlet) (ST-OS) and spin-singlet (orbital-triplet) (SS-OT) states in the K and K$'$ pockets. The ratio of the mixture depends on the relative strength of the interactions, and the sign of the exchange interactions. Moderately strong ferromagnetic exchange interactions even lead to the pairing state with the dominant ST-OS state over the conventional SS one. With these observations, we expect that the fascinating pairing with relatively high $T_{\rm c}$ emerges at high doping that involves all the three Fermi pockets.

Manipulating magnetoelectric effect -- Essence learned from Co$_4$Nb$_2$O$_9$

Recent experiments for linear magnetoelectric (ME) response in honeycomb antiferromagnet Co$_4$Nb$_2$O$_9$ revealed that the electric polarization can be manipulated by the in-plane rotating magnetic field in a systematic way. We propose the minimal model by extracting essential ingredients of Co$_4$Nb$_2$O$_9$ to exhibit such ME response. It is the three-orbital model with $xy$-type atomic spin-orbit coupling (SOC) on the single-layer honeycomb structure, and it is shown to reproduce qualitatively the observed field-angle dependence of the electric polarization. The obtained results can be understood by the perturbative calculation with respect to the atomic SOC. These findings could be useful to explore further ME materials having similar manipulability of the electric polarization.

Microscopic Description of Electric and Magnetic Toroidal Multipoles in Hybrid Orbitals

We present a general formalism of multipole descriptions under the space-time inversion group. We elucidate that two types of atomic toroidal multipoles, i.e., electric and magnetic, are fundamental pieces to express electronic order parameters in addition to ordinary electric and magnetic multipoles. By deriving quantum-mechanical operators for both toroidal multipoles, we show that electric (magnetic) toroidal multipole higher than dipole (monopole) can become a primary order parameter in a hybridized-orbital system. We also demonstrate emergent cross-correlated couplings between electric, magnetic, and elastic degrees of freedom, such as magneto-electric and magneto(electro)-elastic couplings, under toroidal multipole orders.

Emergent odd-parity multipoles and magnetoelectric effects on a diamond structure: implication to 5$d$ transition metal oxides $A$OsO$_4$ ($A=$ K, Rb, and Cs)

We report our theoretical predictions on the linear magnetoelectric (ME) effects originating from odd-parity multipoles associated with spontaneous spin and orbital ordering on a diamond structure. We derive a two-orbital model for $d$ electrons in $e_g$ orbitals by including the effective spin-orbit coupling which arises from the mixing between $e_g$ and $t_{2g}$ orbitals. We show that the model acquires a net antisymmetric spin-orbit coupling once staggered spin and orbital orders occur spontaneously. The staggered orders are accompanied by odd-parity multipoles: magnetic monopole, quadrupoles, and toroidal dipoles. We classify the types of the odd-parity multipoles according to the symmetry of the spin and orbital orders. Furthermore, by computing the ME tensor using the linear response theory, we show that the staggered orders induce a variety of the linear ME responses. We elaborate all possible ME responses for each staggered order, which are useful to identify the order parameter and to detect the odd-parity multipoles by measuring the ME effects. We also elucidate the effect of lowering symmetry by a tetragonal distortion, which leads to richer ME responses. The implications of our results are discussed for $5d$ transition metal oxides, $A$OsO$_4$ ($A=$ K, Rb, and Cs), in which the order parameters are not fully identified.

Antisymmetric Spin-Orbit Coupling Effect on Kondo-Induced Electric Polarization in a Triangular Triple Quantum Dot

We study the local antisymmetric spin-orbit (ASO) coupling effect on spin, orbital, and charge degrees of freedom for the Kondo effect in a triangular triple quantum dot (TTQD). Here, one of the three QDs is coupled to a metallic lead through electron tunneling, and a local electric polarization is induced by the Kondo effect. The ASO interaction is introduced in the other two coupled QDs on the opposite side of the lead. Generally, the ASO coupling effect is very weak and not easily detectable, but it essentially causes spin and charge reconfigurations in the TTQD through the Kondo effect. Using an extended Anderson model for the TTQD Kondo system, we elucidate that the ASO coupling gives rise to a considerable reduction of the emergent electric polarization, as a consequence of the parity mixing of molecular orbitals in the triangular loop as well as the spin-up and spin-down coupling of local electrons. The latter leads to a local diamagnetic susceptibility owing to the ASO coupled spins. We also show that the Kondo-induced electric polarization can be controlled by the ASO coupling as well as by the magnetic flux penetrating through the TTQD.

Optical Selection Rules in Spin-Orbit Coupled Systems on Honeycomb Lattice

We investigate the optical properties in a minimal model of spin-orbit coupled systems on honeycomb lattice at half-filling. The absorption of the circularly polarized light in the charge and antiferromagnetic ordered states is particularly studied, and the spin-valley selective excitation depending on the handedness of the light is found. It is shown that the optical selection rules plainly differ with the type of broken symmetries and topological properties of the electronic states. Consequently, the abrupt change of spin-valley selectivity in the optical absorption occurs at the topological transition caused by changing the magnitude of the order parameters.

Mass-Imbalanced Superconductivity in Effective Two-Channel Kondo Lattice

We propose that mass-imbalanced superconductivity is realized in an effective two-channel Kondo lattice, and its characteristic property appears in electromagnetic responses such as the Meissner effect. Starting from an effective two-channel Kondo lattice model as a low-energy effective theory, and approximating it with two mean-field order parameter components in a self-consistent fashion, it is shown that the balance of the two components is sensitively reflected in the magnitude of the Meissner kernel, while thermodynamic properties are little affected by the balance. This remarkable behavior is understood by the localized character of one partner in the Cooper pair, namely, the effect of the mass imbalance. We briefly mention the relevance to the huge enhancement of the upper critical field under pressure observed in Pr 1-2-20 systems.

Emergent spin-valley-orbital physics by spontaneous parity breaking

The spin-orbit coupling in the absence of spatial inversion symmetry plays an important role in realizing intriguing electronic states in solids, such as topological insulators and unconventional superconductivity. Usually, the inversion symmetry breaking is inherent in the lattice structures, and hence, it is not easy to control these interesting properties by external parameters. We here theoretically investigate the possibility of generating the spin-orbital entanglement by spontaneous electronic ordering caused by electron correlations. In particular, we focus on the centrosymmetric lattices with local asymmetry at the lattice sites, e.g., zig-zag, honeycomb, and diamond structures. In such systems, conventional staggered orders, such as charge order and antiferromagnetic order, break the inversion symmetry and activate the antisymmetric spin-orbit coupling, which is hidden in a sublattice-dependent form in the paramagnetic state. Considering a minimal two-orbital model on a honeycomb lattice, we scrutinize the explicit form of the antisymmetric spin-orbit coupling for all the possible staggered charge, spin, orbital, and spin-orbital orders. We show that the complete table is useful for understanding of spin-valley-orbital physics, such as spin and valley splitting in the electronic band structure and generalized magnetoelectric responses in not only spin but also orbital and spin-orbital channels, reflecting in peculiar magnetic, elastic, and optical properties in solids.

Distributed Hybridization Model for Quantum Critical Behavior in Magnetic Quasicrystals

A quantum critical behavior of the magnetic susceptibility was observed in a quasicrystal containing ytterbium. At the same time, a mixed-valence feature of Yb ions was reported, which appears to be incompatible with the magnetic instability. We derive the magnetic susceptibility by expressing the quasiperiodicity as the distributed hybridization strength between Yb 4f and conduction electrons. Assuming a wide distribution of the hybridization strength, the most f electrons behave as renormalized paramagnetic states in the Kondo or mixed-valence regime, but a small number of f moments remain unscreened. As a result, the bulk magnetic susceptibility exhibits a nontrivial power-law-like behavior, while the average f-electron occupation is that of mixed-valence systems. This model thus resolves two contradictory properties of Yb quasicrystals.

Emergent Electric Polarization by Kondo Effect in a Triangular Triple Quantum Dot

A triangular triple quantum dot gives various Kondo effects, such as the emergence of an electric polarization accompanied by a complete compensation of spin degrees of freedom. The interplay of spin and charge of electrons in quantum dots is investigated using an Anderson model with an equilateral triangular spin cluster, in which a single electron state at one site is hybridized with a conduction band in a lead. The numerical renormalization group analysis shows how a nonzero electric polarization develops with local electrons traveling in the loop and how it depends on the hybridization strength as an experimentally controllable parameter in the Kondo effect.

SU(2)-SU(4) Kondo Crossover and Emergent Electric Polarization in a Triangular Triple Quantum Dot

We study an orbitally degenerate Kondo effect in a triangular triple quantum dot (TTQD), where the three dots are connected vertically with a single metallic lead through electron tunneling. Both spin and orbital degrees of freedom play an important role in the SU(4) Kondo effect. This is demonstrated by an equilateral TTQD Kondo system at half-filling, by Wilson's numerical renormalization group method. We show how an emergent electric polarization of the TTQD is associated with a crossover from SU(4) to SU(2) symmetry in the low-temperature state. A marked sign reversal of the electric polarization is generated by the fine-tuning of Kondo coupling with degenerate orbitals, which can be utilized to reveal orbital dynamics in the SU(4) Kondo effect.

Asymmetric Magnon Excitation by Spontaneous Toroidal Ordering

Effects of spontaneous toroidal ordering on magnetic excitation are theoretically investigated for a localized spin model that includes a staggered Dzyaloshinsky-Moriya interaction and anisotropic exchange interactions, which arise from the antisymmetric spin-orbit coupling and the multi-orbital correlation effect. We show that the model exhibits a Neel-type antiferromagnetic order, which simultaneously accompanies a ferroic toroidal order. We find that the occurrence of toroidal order modulates the magnon dispersion in an asymmetric way with respect to the wave number: a toroidal dipole order on the zigzag chain leads to a band-bottom shift, while a toroidal octupole order on the honeycomb lattice gives rise to a valley splitting. These asymmetric magnon excitations could be a source of unusual magnetic responses, such as nonreciprocal magnon transport. A variety of modulations are discussed while changing the lattice and magnetic symmetries. Implications of candidate materials for asymmetric magnon excitations are presented.
