Self-Consistent Fluctuation Theory for Strongly Correlated Electron Systems

A self-consistent theory for two-particle fluctuations with renormalized irreducible vertices is proposed. Using the Parquet formalism, we construct the fully antisymmetric full vertex in terms of the two-particle fluctuations in the charge, the spin and the particle-particle channels on an equal footing to satisfy the Pauli principle. The fluctuations are determined self-consistently, which are reflected into the one-particle self-energy via the Schwinger-Dyson equation. We demonstrate the application of the present theory to the impurity Anderson model and the Hubbard model on a square lattice mainly for the particle-hole symmetric case. In both models the vertex renormalization in the spin channel eliminates magnetic instabilities of mean-field theory to ensure the Mermin-Wagner theorem. The present theory gives the same critical exponents of the self-consistent renormalization theory in the quantum critical region.

Single Impurity Effects in Multiband Superconductors with Different Sign Order Parameters

A single impurity problem is investigated for multiband s-wave superconductors with different sign order parameters (+-s-wave superconductors) suggested in Fe-pnictide superconductors. Not only intraband but also interband scattering is considered at the impurity. The latter gives rise to impurity-induced local boundstates close to the impurity. We present an exact form of the energy of the local boundstates as a function of strength of the two types of impurity scattering. The essential role of the impurity is unchanged in finite number of impurities. The main conclusions for a single impurity problem help us understand effects of dense impurities in the +-s-wave superconductors. Local density of states around the single impurity is also investigated. We suggest impurity site nuclear magnetic resonance as a suitable experiment to probe the local boundstates that is peculiar to the +-s-wave state. We find that the +-s-wave model is mapped to a chiral dx2-y2+-idxy-wave, reflecting the unconventional nature of the sign reversing order parameter. For a quantum magnetic impurity, interband scattering destabilizes the Kondo singlet.

The Kondo Lattice Model in Infinite Dimensions II. Static Susceptibilities and Phase Diagram

Magnetic and charge susceptibilities in the Kondo lattice are derived by the continuous-time quantum Monte Carlo (CT-QMC) method combined with the dynamical mean-field theory. For a weak exchange coupling J and near half filling of the conduction band, antiferromagnetic transition occurs as signalled by divergence of the staggered magnetic susceptibility with lowering temperature. With increasing J, the Kondo effect suppresses the divergence, and the critical value of J agrees well with Doniach's estimate which considers the RKKY interaction as competing with the Kondo effect. For low density of conduction electrons, a ferromagnetic ordering is observed where Doniach's estimate does not work. Around quarter filling, a charge-density-wave (CDW) transition is found. The CDW is interpreted from the strong-coupling limit in terms of effective repulsion between Kondo singlets.

Evolution of a Large Fermi Surface in the Kondo Lattice

Single-particle spectrum of the Kondo lattice model is derived with use of the continuous-time quantum Monte Carlo method, combined with the dynamical mean-field theory. Crossover behavior is traced quantitatively either to a heavy Fermi-liquid state or to a magnetically ordered state from the local-moment state at high temperatures. The momentum distribution in the low-temperature limit acquires a discontinuity at the location that involves the local-spin degrees of freedom. Even without the charge degrees of freedom for local electrons, the excitation spectra exhibit hybridized bands similar to those in the Anderson lattice. Temperature dependence in the zero-energy component of the self-energy is crucial in forming the Fermi-liquid state with the large Fermi surface.

The Kondo Lattice Model in Infinite Dimensions I. Formalism

A Green-function formalism for the Kondo lattice model is presented, which is designed to be combined with the dynamical mean-field theory. With use of Wick's theorem only for conduction electrons, dynamical quantities are represented in terms of the t-matrix and its two-particle generalizations. By taking the high-frequency limit of the t-matrix with respect to a part of the fermion frequencies, one obtains dynamical correlation functions of localized moments. Explicit examples of calculational steps are provided with use of the continuous-time quantum Monte Carlo method.

Description of Multipole in f-Electron Systems

A systematic description of multipole degrees of freedom is discussed on the basis of the Stevens' operator-equivalent technique. The generalized Stevens' multiplicative factors are derived for all of the electric and the magnetic multipoles relevant to f-electron systems. With extensive use of the Stevens' factors, we express the spatial dependences of the electric and the magnetic fields, and the electric and the magnetic charge densities of localized f electrons. The latter is utilized to draw wave functions including their magnetic profile in addition to their shape with the charge density. The definite relation between the operators as quantum-mechanical variables in a multipole exchange model and the multipole moments in expansion of electromagnetic fields is given. The general treatments for the exchange model with the RPA susceptibility and the Ginzburg-Landau free-energy expansion are discussed, using CexLa1-xB6 as a typical example. The representative formula of the vector spherical harmonics are summarized, which are suitable basis for vector fields in the spherical expansion.

Hybridization and multipole orders of 4f electrons in Pr skutterudites

Characteristics of hybridization and multipole orders of $4f$-electrons in Pr skutterudites are explained in terms of a pseudo-quartet composed of crystalline electric field (CEF) singlet and the triplet. It is shown that the contrasting behaviors observed in PrFe$_4$P$_{12}$ and PrOs$_4$Sb$_{12}$ are ascribed to the difference in triplet wave functions and the CEF splittings.Since a macroscopic degeneracy remains even in the ordered phase with the $Γ_3$-type antiferro-quadrupole (AFQ) order,a model with strong AFQ fluctuation and static monopole/hexadecapole order is proposed for PrFe$_4$P$_{12}$.The remaining cubic symmetry explains qualitatively the behavior of staggered magnetization observed by NMR and neutron scattering. For identification of possible hexadecapole orders in PrFe$_4$P$_{12}$ andPrRu$_4$P$_{12}$, eightfold intensity pattern is predicted in the azimuthal angle scan of resonant X-ray scattering. In PrOs$_4$Sb$_{12}$, the ferromagnetic exchange coupling with the conduction band does not lead to magnetic Kondo effect, but a momentum-dependent quadrupole coupling can give rise to enhanced effective mass, which should be sensitive to disorder.

Influence of Spatial Correlations in Strongly Correlated Electron Systems: Extension to Dynamical Mean Field Approximation

We propose a formalism to take account of the correction of the spatial fluctuations to the local self-energy obtained by the dynamical mean-field approximation. For this purpose, the approximate dynamical susceptibility in the framework of the iterated perturbation theory is proposed and examined. Using the formalism, it is demonstrated that the one-particle spectral intensity in the two-dimensional Hubbard model at half-filling exhibits the pseudo-gap behavior in the central coherent quasiparticle peak due to the critical antiferromagnetic fluctuation. The specific heat is considerably enhanced by the short-range order, which assists a tendency of the Mott localization showing the reduction of the double occupancy. We briefly discuss a formulation for the superconducting transition temperature in the present approximation.

Evidence for Octupole Order in Ce$_{0.7}$La$_{0.3}$B$_6$ from Resonant X-ray Scattering

The azimuthal angle dependence observed in the resonant X-ray scattering in phase IV of Ce$_{0.7}$La$_{0.3}$B$_6$ is analyzed theoretically. It is shown that the peculiar angle dependence observed in the E2 channel is consistent with the Gamma_{5u}-type octupole order with principal axis along (111) and equivalent directions. Under the assumption that the four equivalent octupole domains are nearly equally populated in the sample, the observed angle dependences are reproduced by calculation for both sigma-sigma' and sigma-pi' polarizations. The calculation for various symmetries of order parameters excludes unambiguously other order parameters than the Gamma_{5u}-type octupole.

Dynamics of the Singlet-Triplet System Coupled with Conduction Spins -- Application to Pr Skutterudites

Dynamics of the singlet-triplet crystalline electric field (CEF) system at finite temperatures is discussed by use of the non-crossing approximation. Even though the Kondo temperature is smaller than excitation energy to the CEF triplet, the Kondo effect appears at temperatures higher than the CEF splitting, and accordingly only quasi-elastic peak is found in the magnetic spectra. On the other hand, at lower temperatures the CEF splitting suppresses the Kondo effect and inelastic peak develops. The broad quasi-elastic neutron scattering spectra observed in PrFe_4P_{12} at temperatures higher than the quadrupole order correspond to the parameter range where the CEF splittings are unimportant.

Quasiclassical Theory for Thermodynamic Properties of the Two-Band Superconductor MgB$_2$ under Magnetic Fields

Consistent account is provided of strongly anisotropic properties in thermodynamics of MgB$_2$ under magnetic field $H$ using approximate analytic solution in the quasiclassical formalism. With the strength of the pairing interactions and the Fermi velocities of two bands as fitting parameters, it is possible to reproduce in wide regions of the phase diagram the $H$- and temperature dependences of relevant quantities such as the zero-energy density of states (ZEDOS), two energy gaps, the specific heat and the $H_{c2}$ anisotropy. It is demonstrated that the velocity ratio of two bands affects considerably the low-field behavior of the ZEDOS and energy gaps. The ratio also affects the high-temperature behavior of the $H_{c2}$ anisotropy. The anisotropy of the coherence length in the $σ$ band depends weakly on $H$ and $T$, whereas the coherence length in the $π$ band remains isotropic even in the presence of the inter-band coupling.

Effective Interaction between the inter-penetrating Kagome lattices in Na_xCoO_2

A multi-orbital model for a CoO_2-layer in Na_xCoO_2 is derived. In this model the kinetic energy for the degenerate t_2g-orbitals is given by indirect hopping over oxygen, leading naturally to the concept of four inter-penetrating Kagome lattices. Local Coulomb interaction couples the four lattices and an effective Hamiltonian for the interaction in the top band can be written in terms of fermionic operators with four different flavors. Focusing on charge and spin density instabilities, a big variety of possible metallic states with spontaneously broken symmetry are found. These states lead to different charge, orbital, spin and angular momentum ordering patterns. The strong superstructure formation at x=0.5 is also discussed within this model.

Criterion for weak spin-orbit coupling in heavy-fermion superconductivity: A numerical renormalization-group study

A criterion for effective irrelevancy of the spin-orbit coupling in the heavy-fermion superconductivity is discussed on the basis of the impurity Anderson model with two sets of Kramers doublets. Using Wilson's numerical renormalization-group method, we demonstrate a formation of the quasiparticle as well as the renormalization of the rotational symmetry-breaking interaction in the lower Kramers doublet (quasispin) space. A comparison with the quasispin conserving interaction exhibits the effective irrelevancy of the symmetry-breaking interaction for the splitting of two doublets Delta larger than the characteristic energy of the local spin fluctuation T_K. The formula for the ratio of two interactions is also determined.

Anisotropy of in-plane magnetization due to nodal gap structure in the vortex state

We examine the interplay between anisotropy of the in-plane magnetization and the nodal gap structure on the basis of the approximate analytic solution in the quasiclassical formalism. We show that a four-fold oscillation appears in the magnetization, and its amplitude changes sign at an intermediate field. The high-field oscillation originates from the anisotropy of the upper critical field, while the low-field behavior can be understood by the thermally activated quasiparticles near nodes depending on the applied field angles. The temperature dependence of the magnetization also shows a similar sign change. The anisotropy of the magnetization offers a possible measurement to identify the gap structure directly for a wide class of type II superconductors.

Theory of Crystalline Electric Field and Kondo Effect in Pr Skutterudites

Possible Kondo effect in Pr skutterudite is studied with attention to characteristic features of low-lying crystalline electric field (CEF) levels and the conduction band. A mechanism for the small CEF splitting between a singlet and a triplet is proposed as combination of the point-charge interaction and hybridization of 4f with ligand p states. Provided 4f^3 configurations dominate over 4f^1 as intermediate states, p-f hybridization favors the triplet, while point-charge interaction favors the singlet. For realistic parameters for hybridization as well as 4f^1 and 4f^3 levels, these singlet and triplet can form a nearly degenerate pseudo-quartet. It is found that one of two spin 1/2 objects composing the pseudo-quartet has a ferromagnetic exchange, while the other has an antiferromagnetic exchange with conduction electrons. The magnitude of each effective exchange depends strongly on a parameter characterizing the triplet wave function under the T_h symmetry. It is argued that differences of this parameter among Pr skutterdudites are responsible for the apparent diversity of their physical properties. Numerical renormalization group is used to derive the renormalization flows going toward singlet, doublet, triplet or quaret according to the CEF splitting and exchange interactions.

Interplay of crystal field structures with $f^2$ configuration to heavy fermions

We examine a relevance between characteristic of crystal field structures and heavily renormalized quasiparticle states in the $f^0$-$f^1$-$f^2$ Anderson lattice model. Using a slave-boson mean-field approximation, we find that for $f^2$ configurations two or three quasiparticle bands are formed near the Fermi level depending on the number of the relevant $f^1$ orbitals in the $f^2$ crystal field ground state. The inter-orbital correlations characterizing the crystal field ground state closely reflect in inter-band residual interactions among quasiparticles. Particularly in the case of a singlet crystal field ground state, resulting residual antiferromagnetic exchange interactions among the quasiparticles lead to an anomalous suppression of the quasiparticle contribution of the spin susceptibility, even though the quasiparticle mass is strongly enhanced.

Quasiclassical theory of superconducting states under magnetic fields: Thermodynamic properties

We present a simple calculational scheme for superconducting properties under magnetic fields. A combination of an approximate analytic solution with a free energy functional in the quasiclassical theory provides a wide use formalism for spatial-averaged thermodynamic properties, and requires a little numerical computation. The theory covers multiband superconductors with various set of singlet and unitary triplet pairings in the presence of an impurity scattering. It is also applicable to analyze experimental results in a rotating magnetic field with help of band structure calculations. We demonstrate the application to s-wave, d_{x^2-y^2}-wave and two-band s-wave pairings, and discuss the validity of the theory comparing with previous numerical studies.

Influence of gap structures to specific heat in oriented magnetic fields: Application to the orbital dependent superconductor, Sr$_2$RuO$_4$

We discuss influence of modulation of gap function and anisotropy of Fermi velocity to field angle dependences of upper critical field, $H_{c2}$, and specific heat, $C$, on the basis of the approximate analytic solution in the quasiclassical formalism. Using 4-fold modulation of the gap function and the Fermi velocity in the single-band model, we demonstrate field and temperature dependence of oscillatory amplitude of $H_{c2}$ and $C$. We apply the method to the effective two-band model to discuss the gap structure of Sr$_2$RuO$_4$, focusing on recent field angle-resolved experiments. It is shown that the gap structures with the intermediate magnitude of minima in $[100]$ direction for $γ$ band, and tiny minima of gaps in $[110]$ directions for $α$ and $β$ bands give consistent behaviors with experiments. The interplay of the above two gaps also explains the anomalous temperature dependence of in-plane $H_{c2}$ anisotropy, where the opposite contribution from the passive $αβ$ band is pronounced near $T_c$.
