Spin Frustration and Orbital Order in Vanadium Spinels

We present the results of our theoretical study on the effects of geometrical frustration and the interplay between spin and orbital degrees of freedom in vanadium spinel oxides $A$V$_2$O$_4$ ($A$ = Zn, Mg or Cd). Introducing an effective spin-orbital-lattice coupled model in the strong correlation limit and performing Monte Carlo simulation for the model, we propose a reduced spin Hamiltonian in the orbital ordered phase to capture the stabilization mechanism of the antiferromagnetic order. Orbital order drastically reduces spin frustration by introducing spatial anisotropy in the spin exchange interactions, and the reduced spin model can be regarded as weakly-coupled one-dimensional antiferromagnetic chains. The critical exponent estimated by finite-size scaling analysis shows that the magnetic transition belongs to the three-dimensional Heisenberg universality class. Frustration remaining in the mean-field level is reduced by thermal fluctuations to stabilize a collinear ordering.

Exact low-temperature behavior of kagome antiferromagnet at high fields

Low-energy degrees of freedom of a spin-1/2 kagome antiferromagnet in the vicinity of the saturation field are mapped to a hard-hexagon model on a triangular lattice. The latter model is exactly solvable. The presented mapping allows to obtain quantitative description of the magnetothermodynamics of a quantum kagome antiferromagnet up to exponentially small corrections as well as predict the critical behavior for the transition into a magnon crystal state. Analogous mapping is presented for the sawtooth chain, which is mapped onto a model of classical hard dimers on a chain.

Orbital ordering and one-dimensional magnetic correlation in vanadium spinel oxides AV2O4 (A = Zn, Mg, or Cd)

We present our theoretical results on the mechanism of two transitions in vanadium spinel oxides $A$V$_2$O$_4$ ($A$=Zn, Mg, or Cd) in which magnetic V cations constitute a geometrically-frustrated pyrochlore structure. We have derived an effective spin-orbital-lattice coupled model in the strong correlation limit of the multiorbital Hubbard model, and applied Monte Carlo simulation to the model. The results reveal that the higher-temperature transition is a layered antiferro-type orbital ordering accompanied by tetragonal Jahn-Teller distortion, and the lower-temperature transition is an antiferromagnetic spin ordering. The orbital order lifts the magnetic frustration partially, and induces spatial anisotropy in magnetic exchange interactions. In the intermediate phase, the system can be considered to consist of weakly-coupled antiferromagnetic chains lying in the perpendicular planes to the tetragonal distortion.

Orbital and magnetic transitions in geometrically-frustrated vanadium spinels -- Monte Carlo study of an effective spin-orbital-lattice coupled model --

We present our theoretical and numerical results on thermodynamic properties and the microscopic mechanism of two successive transitions in vanadium spinel oxides $A$V$_2$O$_4$ ($A$=Zn, Mg, or Cd) obtained by Monte Carlo calculations of an effective spin-orbital-lattice model in the strong correlation limit. Geometrical frustration in the pyrochlore lattice structure of V cations suppresses development of spin and orbital correlations, however, we find that the model exhibits two transitions at low temperatures. First, a discontinuous transition occurs with an orbital ordering assisted by the tetragonal Jahn-Teller distortion. The orbital order reduces the frustration in spin exchange interactions, and induces antiferromagnetic correlations in one-dimensional chains lying in the perpendicular planes to the tetragonal distortion. Secondly, at a lower temperature, a three-dimensional antiferromagnetic order sets in continuously, which is stabilized by the third-neighbor interaction among the one-dimensional antiferromagnetic chains. Thermal fluctuations are crucial to stabilize the collinear magnetic state by the order-by-disorder mechanism. The results well reproduce the experimental data such as transition temperatures, temperature dependence of the magnetic susceptibility, changes of the entropy at the transitions, and the magnetic ordering structure at low temperatures. Quantum fluctuation effect is also examined by the linear spin wave theory at zero temperature. The staggered moment in the ground state is found to be considerably reduced from saturated value, and reasonably agrees with the experimental data.

Magnetic transition and orbital degrees of freedom in vanadium spinels

We propose a scenario for the two phase transitions in $A$V$_2$O$_4$ ($A$=Zn, Mg, Cd), based on an effective spin-orbital model on the pyrochlore lattice. At high temperatures, spin correlations are strongly frustrated due to the lattice structure, and the transition at $\sim$50 [K] is an orbital order, supported by Jahn-Teller lattice distortion. This orbital order introduces spatial modulation of spin exchange couplings depending on the bond direction. This partially releases the frustration, and leads to a spin order at $\sim$40 [K]. We also study the stable spin configuration by taking account of third-neighbor exchange couplings and quantum fluctuations. The result is consistent with the experimental results.

Low-energy excitations of the Hubbard model on the Kagomé lattice

The Hubbard model on the Kagomé lattice is investigated in a metallic phase at half-filling. By introducing anisotropic electron hopping on the lattice, we control geometrical frustration and clarify how the lattice geometry affects physical properties. By means of the fluctuation exchange (FLEX) approximation, we calculate the spin and charge susceptibilities, the one-particle spectral function, the quasi-particle renormalization factor, and the Fermi velocity. It is found that geometrical frustration of the Kagomé lattice suppresses the instability to various ordered states through the strong reduction of the wavevector dependence of susceptibilities, thereby stabilizing the formation of quasi-particles due to the almost isotropic spin fluctuations in the Brillouin zone. These characteristic properties are discussed in connection with the effects of geometrical frustration in the strong coupling regime.

Antiferromagnetic Quantum Spins on the Pyrochlore Lattice

The ground state of the S=1/2 Heisenberg antiferromagnet on the pyrochlore lattice is theoretically investigated. Starting from the limit of isolated tetrahedra, I include interactions between the tetrahedra and obtain an effective model for the spin-singlet ground state multiplet by third-order perturbation. I determine its ground state using the mean-field approximation and found a dimerized state with a four-sublattice structure, which agrees with the proposal by Harris et al. I also discuss chirality correlations and spin correlations for this state.

Control of Superconducting Correlations in High-Tc Cuprates

A strategy to enhance d-wave superconducting correlations is proposed based on our numerical study for correlated electron models for high-Tc cuprates. We observe that the pairing is enhanced when the single-electron level around (pi,0) is close to the Fermi level E_F, while the d-wave pairing interaction itself contains elements to disfavor the pairing due to shift of the (pi,0)-level. Angle-resolved photoemission results in the cuprates are consistently explained in the presence of the d-wave pairing interaction. Our proposal is the tuning of the (pi,0)-level under the many-body effects to E_F by optimal design of band structure.

Metal-Insulator and Superconductor-Insulator Transitions in Correlated Electron Systems

Quantum transitions between the Mott insulator and metals by controlling filling in two-dimensional square lattice are characterized by a large dynamical exponent $z=4$ where the origin of unusual metallic properties near the Mott insulator are ascribed to the proximity of the transition. The scaling near the transition indicates the formation of flat dispersion area due to singular momentum dependence of the single-particle renormalization. The flat dispersion controls critical properties of the Mott transition. An instability of the flat dispersion to the d-wave superconducting order is discussed. We also discuss a case of the Mott transition for a model of Mn perovskite compounds with orbital degeneracy where orbital correlation length shows critical divergence toward the metal-insulator transition.

Dynamic Exponent of t-J and t-J-W Model

Drude weight of optical conductivity is calculated at zero temperature by exact diagonalization for the two-dimensional t-J model with the two-particle term, $W$. For the ordinary t-J model with $W$=0, the scaling of the Drude weight $D \propto δ^2$ for small doping concentration $δ$ is obtained, which indicates anomalous dynamic exponent $z$=4 of the Mott transition. When $W$ is switched on, the dynamic exponent recovers its conventional value $z$=2. This corresponds to an incoherent-to-coherent transition associated with the switching of the two-particle transfer.

Transport Properties of Doped t-J Ladders

Conductivity and Hall coefficient for various types of t-J ladders are calculated as a function of temperature and frequency by numerical diagonalization. A crossover from an incoherent to a coherent charge dynamics is found at a temperature T_{coh}. There exists another crossover at T_{PG} below which a pseudogap opens in the optical spectra, induced by the opening of a spin gap. In the absence of the spin gap, T_{coh} and the coherent weight are suppressed especially with increasing dimensionality. On the contrary, T_{coh} is strongly enhanced by the pseudogap formation below T_{PG}, where the coherent Drude weight decreases with increasing dimensionality. The Hall coefficient shows a strong crossover at T_{PG} below which it has large amplitude for small doping concentration.

Properties of lightly doped t-J two-leg ladders

We have numerically investigated the doped t-J ladder using exact diagonalization. We have studied both the limit of strong inter-chain coupling and isotropic coupling. The ladder scales to the Luther-Emery liquid regime in the strong inter-chain coupling limit. In this strong coupling limit there is a simple picture of the excitation spectrum that can be continued to explain the behavior at isotropic coupling. At J=0 we have indications of a ferromagnetic ground state. At a large $J/t$ the ladder is phase separated into holes and a Heisenberg ladder. At intermediate coupling the ground state shows hole pairing with a modified d-wave symmetry. The excitation spectrum separates into a limited number of quasiparticles which carry charge $+|e|$ and spin ${1\over 2}$ and a triplet magnon mode. At half-filling the former vanish but the latter evolves continuously into the magnon band of the spin liquid. At low doping the quasiparticles form a dilute Fermi gas with a strong attraction but simultaneously the Fermi wave vector, as would be measured in photoemission, is large. The dynamical structure factors are calculated and are found to be very similar to calculations on 2D clusters.

Effect of the Three-Site Hopping Term on the t-J Model

We have used exact diagonalization and quantum Monte Carlo methods to study the one-dimensional {t-J} model including the three-site hopping term derived from the strong coupling limit of the Hubbard model. The three-site term may be important to superconducting correlations since it allows direct hopping of local singlet electron pairs. The phase diagram is determined for several values of the strength of the three-site term and compared with that of the {t-J} and Hubbard models. Phase separation, which exists in the t-J model is suppressed. In the low electron density region the formation of local singlet electron pairs is enhanced, leading to stronger superconducting correlations even for values $J/t<2$. A large spin gap region extends from low electron densities up to high densities. In the low hole density region the superconducting correlations are suppressed at $J/t>2.8$ in spite of enhanced pair formation. This is because the three-site term, while enhancing the formation of electron pairs, leads to a repulsion between holes.

Singlet Stripe Phases in the planar t-J Model

The energies of singlet stripe phases in which a plane is broken up into spin liquid ladders by lines of holes, is examined. If the holes were static then patterns containing spin liquids with a finite spin gap are favored. The case of dynamic holes is treated by assembling t-J ladders oriented perpendicular to the stripes. For a wide region around $J/t \approx 1$ the hole-hole correlations in a single ladder are found to be predominantly charge density wave type but an attraction between hole pairs on adjacent ladders leads to a stripe phase. A quantum mechanical melting of the hole lines at smaller $J/t$ values leads to a Bose condensate of hole pairs, i.e. a superconducting phase.

Thermodynamics and spin gap of the Heisenberg ladder calculated by the look-ahead Lanczos algorithm

We have developed an improved version of the quantum transfer matrix algorithm. The extreme eigenvalues and eigenvectors of the transfer matrix are calculated by the recently developed look-ahead Lanczos algorithm for non-Hermitian matrices with higher efficiency and accuracy than by the power method. We have applied this method to the Heisenberg ladder. The temperature dependence of the susceptibility, specific heat, correlation length and nuclear spin relaxation rate $1/T_1$ are calculated. Our results support the existence of a spin gap of about $0.5 J$. The preprint is submitted as a uuencoded compressed PostScript file. Pairing and Excitation Spectrum in doped t-J Ladders

Exact diagonalization studies for a doped t-J ladder (or double chain) show hole pairing in the ground state. The excitation spectrum separates into a limited number of quasiparticles which carry charge $+|e|$ and spin ${1 \over 2}$ and a triplet mode. At half-filling the former vanish but the latter evolves continuously into the triplet band of the spin liquid. At low doping the quasiparticles form a dilute Fermi gas with a strong attraction but simultaneously the Fermi wavevector, as would be measured in photoemission, is large.
