Z-Opt: A Near-Optimal Reduced-Complexity Two-Dimensional Grassmannian Constellation

Grassmannian constellations are known to achieve the capacity of noncoherent communications over Rayleigh fading channels in the high-SNR regime, yet their efficient construction remains challenging. In this paper, we propose two construction methods for Grassmannian constellations of one-dimensional subspaces in a two-dimensional space, termed S-Opt and Z-Opt, along with two low-complexity detectors. Both the construction and detection procedures are performed on the unit sphere, known as the Bloch sphere in quantum computing. We show that the chordal distance on the Grassmann manifold is proportional to the Euclidean distance on the Bloch sphere and derive a corresponding theoretical upper bound based on the Fejes--Tóth bound on the minimum chordal distance. The S-Opt constellation is constructed from sphere-packing solutions and attains the derived upper bound for the optimal Bloch-sphere packings considered. The S-Opt detector can be applied to arbitrary Grassmannian constellations on $\mathcal{G}(2,1)$, and its time complexity scales linearly with the number of receive antennas and logarithmically with the constellation size, while yielding the same detection performance as the GLRT detector. Furthermore, based on the insight obtained through the S-Opt construction, the Z-Opt constellation is constructed by stacking regular polygons on the Bloch sphere, and its minimum chordal distance approaches the derived upper bound over the evaluated constellation sizes. The Z-Opt detector's time complexity scales linearly with the number of receive antennas, while yielding the same detection performance as the GLRT detector for Z-Opt.

Sparsification of Precoding Codebooks for PAPR Reduction via Grassmannian Representations

In this letter, we propose a sparsification method for precoding codebooks that reduces the peak-to-average power ratio (PAPR) while preserving the achievable rate. By exploiting the fact that precoder matrices lie on the Grassmann manifold, we formulate a codebook design problem that enables sparsification without modifying the existing feedback mechanism. We develop two sparsification approaches, namely exact sparsification via unitary transformation and approximate sparsification via sparse principal component analysis, and integrate them into a unified design algorithm. The proposed sparsified codebooks incur negligible performance loss while reducing PAPR by more than 1 dB in uplink scenarios.

Repeater-Assisted MIMO Can Also Boost Frequency Diversity: A Semi-Analytic Study

Massive multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) has enabled substantial spatial multiplexing and array gains in real-world systems, while distributed MIMO (D-MIMO) improves macro-diversity over wide areas at the cost of deployment complexity. Repeater-assisted massive MIMO (RA-MIMO) is a lower-cost alternative that can recover key distributed-MIMO advantages. This paper asks whether repeater assistance can also enhance frequency diversity. We study an uncoded discrete Fourier transform-spread orthogonal frequency-division multiplexing (DFT-s-OFDM) uplink with one-tap single-carrier frequency-domain equalization (SC-FDE) based on minimum mean-square error (MMSE) and derive a receiver-matched semi-analytic bit-error rate (BER) expression by averaging over channel and interference realizations, without Gaussian approximation of residual despreading interference. The analysis clarifies how repeater delay reshapes frequency correlation, and waveform simulations confirm tight agreement with the derived expression together with improved high-signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) BER decay, highlighting delay as a practical tuning knob.

Low-Complexity and Power-Efficient Precoding Codebook Design on Sparse Grassmannian

We propose a sparse Grassmannian design for precoding codebooks. Due to their sparse structure, our proposed codebooks achieve low peak-to-average power ratio (PAPR), low complexity of precoder multiplication, and low storage cost, while demonstrating performance comparable to the optimal codebook. Specifically, we introduce a method for constructing codebooks based on Schubert cell decomposition on the Grassmann manifold. Designing an optimal Grassmannian precoding codebook generally requires high computational complexity. In the proposed approach, by exploiting its sparsity, the objective function can be simplified, and the search space can also be significantly reduced compared to state-of-the-art codebooks. Numerical simulations in uplink systems demonstrate that the proposed sparse codebook asymptotically approaches the optimal codebook and outperforms the codebook currently adopted in 5G NR, in terms of achievable rate under uncorrelated Rayleigh fading channels, while maintaining substantially lower PAPR than conventional dense designs. These results confirm that the proposed sparse codebook can be a practical and power-efficient alternative to conventional codebooks for a wide range of uplink transmission scenarios.

Superimposed Pilot-Based OTFS: Will It Work?

Orthogonal time frequency space (OTFS) modulation is a promising solution to handle doubly-selective fading, but its channel estimation is a nontrivial task in terms of maximizing spectral efficiency. Conventional pilot assignment approaches face challenges: the standard embedded pilot-based scheme suffers from low transmission rates, and the single superimposed pilot (SP)-based scheme experiences inevitable data-pilot interference, leading to coarse channel estimation. To cope with this issue, focusing on the SP-based OTFS system in channel coded scenarios, we propose a novel pilot assignment scheme and an iterative algorithm. The proposed scheme allocates multiple SPs per frame to estimate channel coefficients accurately. Furthermore, the proposed algorithm performs refined interference cancellation, utilizing a replica of data symbols generated from soft-decision outputs provided by a decoder. Assuming fair and unified conditions, we evaluate each pilot assignment scheme in terms of reliability, channel estimation accuracy, effective throughput, and computational complexity. Our numerical simulations demonstrate that the multiple SP-based scheme, which balances the transmission rate and the interference cancellation performance, has the best throughput at the expense of slightly increased complexity. In addition, we confirm that the multiple SP-based scheme achieves further improved throughput due to the proposed interference cancellation algorithm.

Reciprocity Calibration of Dual-Antenna Repeaters via MMSE Estimation

This paper proposes a novel Bayesian reciprocity calibration method that consistently ensures uplink and downlink channel reciprocity in repeater-assisted multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) systems. The proposed algorithm is formulated under the minimum mean-square error (MMSE) criterion. Its Bayesian framework incorporates complete statistical knowledge of the signal model, noise, and prior distributions, enabling a coherent design that achieves both low computational complexity and high calibration accuracy. To further enhance phase alignment accuracy, which is critical for calibration tasks, we develop a von Mises denoiser that exploits the fact that the target parameters lie on the circle in the complex plane. Simulation results demonstrate that the proposed MMSE algorithm achieves substantially improved estimation accuracy compared with conventional deterministic non-linear least-squares (NLS) methods, while maintaining comparable computational complexity. Furthermore, the proposed method exhibits remarkably fast convergence, making it well suited for practical implementation.

Sparse Grassmannian Design for Noncoherent Codes via Schubert Cell Decomposition

In this paper, we propose a method for designing sparse Grassmannian codes for noncoherent multiple-input multiple-output systems. Conventional pairwise error probability formulations under uncorrelated Rayleigh fading channels fail to account for rank deficiency induced by sparse configurations. We revise these formulations to handle such cases in a unified manner. Furthermore, we derive a closed-form metric that effectively maximizes the noncoherent average mutual information (AMI) at a given signal-to-noise ratio. We focus on the fact that the Schubert cell decomposition of the Grassmann manifold provides a mathematically sparse property, and establish design criteria for sparse noncoherent codes based on our analyses. In numerical results, the proposed sparse noncoherent codes outperform conventional methods in terms of both symbol error rate and AMI, and asymptotically approach the performance of the optimal Grassmannian constellations in the high-signal-to-noise ratio regime. Moreover, they reduce the time and space complexity, which does not scale with the number of transmit antennas.

Joint Pilot Allocation and Sequence Design for MIMO-OFDM Systems With Channel Sparsity

This paper proposes a joint optimization of pilot subcarrier allocation and non-orthogonal sequence for multiple-input-multiple-output (MIMO)-orthogonal frequency-division multiplexing (OFDM) systems under compressed sensing (CS)-based channel estimation exploiting delay and angle sparsity. Since the performance of CS-based approaches depends on a coherence metric of the sensing matrix in the measurement process, we formulate a joint optimization problem to minimize this coherence. Due to the discrete nature of subcarrier allocation, a straightforward formulation of the joint optimization results in a mixed-integer nonlinear program (MINLP), which is computationally intractable due to the combinatorial explosion of allocation candidates. To overcome the intractability of discrete variables, we introduce a block sparse penalty for pilots across all subcarriers, which ensures that the power of some unnecessary pilots approaches zero. This framework enables joint optimization using only continuous variables. In addition, we propose an efficient computation method for the coherence metric by exploiting the structure of the sensing matrix, which allows its gradient to be derived in closed form, making the joint optimization problem solvable in an efficient way via a gradient descent approach. Numerical results confirm that the proposed pilot sequence exhibits superior coherence properties and enhances the CS-based channel estimation performance.

Joint Channel and Data Estimation for Multiuser Extremely Large-Scale MIMO Systems

This paper proposes a joint channel and data estimation (JCDE) algorithm for uplink multiuser extremely large-scale multiple-input-multiple-output (XL-MIMO) systems. The initial channel estimation is formulated as a sparse reconstruction problem based on the angle and distance sparsity under the near-field propagation condition. This problem is solved using non-orthogonal pilots through an efficient low complexity two-stage compressed sensing algorithm. Furthermore, the initial channel estimates are refined by employing a JCDE framework driven by both non-orthogonal pilots and estimated data. The JCDE problem is solved by sequential expectation propagation (EP) algorithms, where the channel and data are alternately updated in an iterative manner. In the channel estimation phase, integrating Bayesian inference with a model-based deterministic approach provides precise estimations to effectively exploit the near-field characteristics in the beam-domain. In the data estimation phase, a linear minimum mean square error (LMMSE)-based filter is designed at each sub-array to address the correlation due to energy leakage in the beam-domain arising from the near-field effects. Numerical simulations reveal that the proposed initial channel estimation and JCDE algorithm outperforms the state-of-the-art approaches in terms of channel estimation, data detection, and computational complexity.

Maximizing Spectrum Efficiency of Data-Carrying Reference Signals via Bayesian Optimization

Data-carrying reference signals are a type of reference signal (RS) constructed on the Grassmann manifold, which allows for simultaneous data transmission and channel estimation to achieve boosted spectral efficiency at high signal-to-noise ratios (SNRs). However, they do not improve spectral efficiency at low to middle SNRs compared with conventional RSs. To address this problem, we propose a numerical optimization-based Grassmann constellation design on the Grassmann manifold that accounts for both data transmission and channel estimation. In our numerical optimization, we derive an upper bound on the normalized mean squared error (NMSE) of estimated channel matrices and a lower bound on the noncoherent average mutual information (AMI), and these bounds are optimized simultaneously by using a Bayesian optimization technique. The proposed objective function outperforms conventional design metrics in obtaining Pareto-optimal constellations for NMSE and AMI. The constellation obtained by our method achieves an NMSE comparable to conventional non-data-carrying RSs while enabling data transmission, resulting in superior AMI performance and improved spectral efficiency even at middle SNRs.

Covert Communications Without Pre-Sharing of Side Information and Channel Estimation Over Quasi-Static Fading Channels

We propose a new covert communication scheme that operates without pre-sharing side information and channel estimation, utilizing a Gaussian-distributed Grassmann constellation for noncoherent detection. By designing constant-amplitude symbols on the Grassmann manifold and multiplying them by random variables, we generate signals that follow an arbitrary probability distribution, such as Gaussian or skew-normal distributions. The mathematical property of the manifold enables the transmitter's random variables to remain unshared with the receiver, and the elimination of pilot symbols that could compromise covertness. The proposed scheme achieved higher covertness and achievable rates compared to conventional coherent Gaussian signaling schemes, without any penalty in terms of complexity.

Achieving Distributed MIMO Performance with Repeater-Assisted Cellular Massive MIMO

In what ways could cellular massive MIMO be improved? This technology has already been shown to bring huge performance gains. However, coverage holes and difficulties to transmit multiple streams to multi-antenna users because of insufficient channel rank remain issues. Distributed MIMO, also known as cell-free massive MIMO, might be the ultimate solution. However, while being a powerful technology, it is expensive to install backhaul, and it is a difficult problem to achieve accurate phase alignment for coherent multi-user beamforming on downlink. Another option is reflective intelligent surfaces - but they have large form factors and require a lot of training and control overhead, and probably, in practice, some form of active filtering to make them sufficiently band-selective. We propose a new approach to densification of cellular systems, envisioning repeater-assisted cellular massive MIMO, where a large numbers of physically small and cheap wireless repeaters are deployed. They receive and retransmit signals instantaneously, appearing as active scatterers. Meaning that they appear as ordinary channel scatterers but with amplification. We elaborate on the requirements of such repeaters, show that the performance of these systems could potentially approach that of distributed MIMO, and outline future research directions.

Boosting Spectral Efficiency with Data-Carrying Reference Signals on the Grassmann Manifold

In wireless networks, frequent reference signal transmission for accurate channel reconstruction may reduce spectral efficiency. To address this issue, we consider to use a data-carrying reference signal (DC-RS) that can simultaneously estimate channel coefficients and transmit data symbols. Here, symbols on the Grassmann manifold are exploited to carry additional data and to assist in channel estimation. Unlike conventional studies, we analyze the channel estimation errors induced by DC-RS and propose an optimization method that improves the channel estimation accuracy without performance penalty. Then, we derive the achievable rate of noncoherent Grassmann constellation assuming discrete inputs in multi-antenna scenarios, as well as that of coherent signaling assuming channel estimation errors modeled by the Gauss-Markov uncertainty. These derivations enable performance evaluation when introducing DC-RS, and suggest excellent potential for boosting spectral efficiency, where interesting crossings with the non-data carrying RS occurred at intermediate signal-to-noise ratios.

Quantization-Aided Secrecy: FD C-RAN Communications with Untrusted Radios

In this work, we study a full-duplex (FD) cloud radio access network (C-RAN) from the aspects of infrastructure sharing and information secrecy, where the central unit utilizes FD remote radio units (RU)s belonging to the same operator, i.e., the trusted RUs, as well as the RUs belonging to other operators or private owners, i.e., the untrusted RUs. Furthermore, the communication takes place in the presence of untrusted external receivers, i.e., eavesdropper nodes. The communicated uplink (UL) and downlink (DL) waveforms are quantized in order to comply with the limited capacity of the fronthaul links. In order to provide information secrecy, we propose a novel utilization of the quantization noise shaping in the DL, such that it is simultaneously used to comply with the limited capacity of the fronthaul links, as well as to degrade decoding capability of the individual eavesdropper and the untrusted RUs for both the UL and DL communications. In this regard, expressions describing the achievable secrecy rates are obtained. An optimization problem for jointly designing the DL and UL quantization and precoding strategies are then formulated, with the purpose of maximizing the overall system weighted sum secrecy rate. Due to the intractability of the formulated problem, an iterative solution is proposed, following the successive inner approximation and semi-definite relaxation frameworks, with convergence to a stationary point. Numerical evaluations indicate a promising gain of the proposed approaches for providing information secrecy against the untrusted infrastructure nodes and/or external eavesdroppers in the context of FD C-RAN communications.

Robust Symbol Detection in Overloaded NOMA Systems

We present a framework for the design of low-complexity and high-performance receivers for multidimensional overloaded NOMA systems. The framework is built upon a novel compressive sensing (CS) regularized maximum likelihood formulation of the discrete-input detection problem, in which the L0-norm is introduced to enforce adherence of the solution to the prescribed discrete symbol constellation. Unlike much of preceding literature, the method is not relaxed into the L1-norm, but rather approximated with a continuous and asymptotically exact expression without resorting to parallel interference cancellation. The objective function of the resulting formulation is thus a sum of concave-over-convex ratios, which is then tightly convexized via the quadratic transform, such that its solution can be obtained via the iteration of a simple closed-form expression that closely resembles that of the classic zero-forcing (ZF) receiver. By further transforming the aforementioned problem into a quadratically constrained quadratic program with one convex constraint (QCQP-1), the optimal regularization parameter to be used at each step of the iterative algorithm is then shown to be the largest generalized eigenvalue of a pair of matrices which are given in closed-form. The method so obtained, referred to as the IDLS, is then extended to address several factors of practical relevance, such as noisy conditions, imperfect CSI, and hardware impairments, thus yielding the Robust IDLS algorithm. Simulation results show that the proposed art significantly outperforms both classic receivers, such as the LMMSE, and recent CS-based alternatives, such as the SOAV and the SCSR detectors.

Grant-Free Access via Bilinear Inference for Cell-Free MIMO with Low-Coherent Pilots

We propose a novel joint activity, channel, and data estimation (JACDE) scheme for cell-free multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) systems compliant with fifth-generation (5G) new radio (NR) orthogonal frequency-division multiplexing (OFDM) signaling. The contribution aims to allow significant overhead reduction of cell-free MIMO systems by enabling grant-free access, while maintaining moderate throughput per user. To that end, we extend the conventional MIMO OFDM protocol so as to incorporate activity detection capability without resorting to spreading informative data symbols, in contrast with related work which typically relies on signal spreading. Our method leverages a Bayesian message passing scheme based on Gaussian approximation, which jointly performs active user detection (AUD), channel estimation (CE), and multi-user detection (MUD), incorporating also a well-structured low-coherent pilot design based on frame theory, which mitigates pilot contamination, and finally complemented with a detector empowered by bilinear message passing. The efficacy of the resulting JACDE-based grant-free access scheme without spreading data sequences is demonstrated by simulation results, which are shown to significantly outperform the current state-of-the-art and approach the performance of an idealized (genie-aided) scheme in which user activity and channel coefficients are perfectly known.

Full-Duplex Amplify-and-Forward MIMO Relaying: Impairments Aware Design and Performance Analysis

Full-Duplex (FD) Amplify-and-Forward (AF) Multiple-Input Multiple-Output (MIMO) relaying has been the focus of several recent studies, due to the potential for achieving a higher spectral efficiency and lower latency, together with inherent processing simplicity. However, when the impact of hardware distortions are considered, such relays suffer from a distortion-amplification loop, due to the inter-dependent nature of the relay transmit signal covariance and the residual self-interference covariance. The aforementioned behavior leads to a significant performance degradation for a system with a low or medium hardware accuracy. In this work, we analyse the relay transfer function as well as the Mean Squared-Error (MSE) performance of an FD-AF MIMO relaying communication, under the impact of collective sources of additive and multiplicative transmit and receive impairments. Building on the performed analysis, an optimization problem is devised to minimize the communication MSE and solved by employing the recently proposed Penalty Dual Decomposition (PDD) framework. The proposed solution converges to a stationary point of the original problem via a sequence of convex quadratic programs (CQP)s, thereby enjoying an acceptable arithmatic complexity as the problem dimensions grow large. Numerical simulations verify the significance of the proposed distortion-aware design and analysis, compared to the common simplified approaches, as the hardware accuracy degrades.
