Magnetization Process of Nanoscale Iron Cluster

Low-temperature magnetization process of the nanoscale iron cluster in linearly sweeped fields is investigated by a numerical analysis of time-dependent Schr$\ddot{\rm o}$dinger equation and the quantum master equation. We introduce an effective basis method extracting important states, by which we can obtain the magnetization process effectively. We investigate the structure of the field derivative of the magnetization. We find out that the antisymmetric interaction determined from the lattice structure reproduces well the experimental results of the iron magnets and that this interaction plays an important role in the iron cluster. Deviations from the adiabatic process are also studied. In the fast sweeping case, our calculations indicate that the nonadiabatic transition dominantly occurs at the level crossing for the lowest field. In slow sweeping case, due to the influence of the thermal environment to the spin system, the field derivative of the magnetization shows an asymmetric behavior, the magnetic F$\ddot{\rm o}$hn effect, which explains the substructure of the experimental results in the pulsed field.

Incoherent Charge Dynamics in Perovskite Manganese Oxides

A minimal model is proposed for the perovskite manganese oxides showing the strongly incoherent charge dynamics with a suppressed Drude weight in the ferromagnetic and metallic phase near the insulator. We investigate a generalized double-exchange model including three elements; the orbital degeneracy of $e_g$ conduction bands, the Coulomb interaction and fluctuating Jahn-Teller distortions. We demonstrate that Lancz$\ddot{\rm o}$s diagonalization calculations combined with Monte Carlo sampling of the largely fluctuating lattice distortions result in the optical conductivity which quantitatively accounts for the experimental indications. It is found that all the three elements are indispensable to understand the charge dynamics in these compounds.

Effects of Orbital Degeneracy and Electron Correlation on Charge Dynamics in Perovskite Manganese Oxides

Taking the orbital degeneracy of $e_g$ conduction bands and the Coulomb interaction into account in a double-exchange model, we investigate charge dynamics of perovskite Mn oxides by the Lancz$\ddot{\rm o}$s diagonalization method. In the metallic phase near the Mott insulator, it is found that the optical conductivity for a spin-polarized two-dimensional system exhibits a weight transfer to a broad and incoherent structure within the lower-Hubbard band together with a suppressed Drude weight. It reproduces qualitative feature of the experimental results. As an orbital effect, we find that an anomalous charge correlation at quarter filling suppresses the coherent charge dynamics and signals precursor to the charge ordering.

Optical Conductivity of the Two-Dimensional Hubbard Model

Charge dynamics of the two-dimensional Hubbard model is investigated. Lancz$\ddot{\rm o}$s-diagonalization results for the optical conductivity and the Drude weight of this model are presented. Near the Mott transition, large incoherence below the upper-Hubbard band is obtained together with a remarkably suppressed Drude weight in two dimensions while the clearly coherent character is shown in one dimension. The two-dimensional results are consistent with previous results from quantum Monte Carlo calculations indicating that the Mott transition in this two-dimensional model belongs to the universality class characterized by the dynamical exponent of $z=4$.

Metal-Insulator Transition in Mn Perovskite Compounds

We discuss Mott insulating and metallic phases of a model with $e_g$ orbital degeneracy to understand physics of Mn perovskite compounds. Quantum Monte Carlo and Lanczos diagonalization results are discussed in this model. To reproduce experimental results on charge gap and Jahn-Teller distortions, we show that a synergy between the strong correlation effects and the Jahn-Teller coupling is important. The incoherent charge dynamics and strong charge fluctuations are characteristic of the metallic phase accompanied with critical enhancement of short-ranged orbital correlation near the insulator.

Magnetization Plateaus in One Dimensional $Š=1/2$ Heisenberg Model with Dimerization and Quadrumerization

The one dimensional $S=1/2$ Heisenberg model with dimerization ($1-j$) and quadrumerization ($δ$) in the magnetic field is studied by means of the numerical exact diagonalization of finite size systems and the conformal field theory. It is found that the magnetization plateau at half of the saturation value exists for $δ\neq 0$. For $δ= 0$, this model is described by the conformal field theory with central charge $c=1$ at this value of magnetization. The critical exponent $ν$ which characterizes the $δ$-dependence of the width of the plateau is calculated using the level spectroscopy method. The $j$-dependence of the critical exponent $ν$ is found to be non-monotonic and discontinuous at $j = 0$. The effective theory of the magnetization plateau is also presented for various limiting cases.

Magnetic properties of quantum Heisenberg ferromagnets with long-range interactions

Quantum Heisenberg ferromagnets with long-range interactions decayin as $1/r^p$ in one and two dimensions are investigated by means of the Green's function method. It is shown that there exists a finite-temperature phase transition in the region $d<p<2 d$ for the $d$-dimensional case and that no transitions at any finite temperature exist for $p\ge 2 d$; the critical temperature is also estimated. We study the magnetic properties of this model. We calculate the critical exponents' dependence on $p$; these exponents also satisfy a scaling relation. Some of the results were also found using the modified spin-wave theory and are in remarkable agreement with each other.

Quantum Heisenberg Chain with Long-Range Ferromagnetic Interactions at Low Temperature

A modified spin-wave theory is applied to the one-dimensional quantum Heisenberg model with long-range ferromagnetic interactions. Low-temperature properties of this model are investigated. The susceptibility and the specific heat are calculated; the relation between their behaviors and strength of the long-range interactions is obtained. This model includes both the Haldane-Shastry model and the nearest-neighbor Heisenberg model; the corresponding results in this paper are in agreement with the solutions of both the models. It is shown that there exists an ordering transition in the region where the model has longer-range interactions than the HS model. The critical temperature is estimated.
