Exploring Chirality Structure in Nucleon Decay

Baryon number conservation is an accidental symmetry in the Standard Model, but its violation is theoretically anticipated, making the search for such processes a promising avenue for discovering new physics. In this paper, we explore how measurements of different nucleon decay channels can reveal the structure of the underlying theory. We investigate the chirality structure of baryon-number violating interactions through lifetime measurements of strangeness-conserving nucleon-decay channels. By employing an effective field theory approach, we demonstrate that the ratio of partial decay widths of proton decay channels, $Γ(p \to η\ell^+)/Γ(p \to π^0 \ell^+)$, where $\ell^+$ denotes a positron or anti-muon, is sensitive to this chirality structure. Furthermore, we find that in certain new physics models, both anti-lepton and anti-neutrino channels provide valuable insights into the model's structure. Our results highlight the importance of searching for various decay channels in upcoming nucleon decay experiments.

Rate-fidelity trade-off in cavity-based remote entanglement generation

The qubit scalability imposes a paramount challenge in the field of quantum computing. Photonic interconnects between distinct quantum computing modules provide a solution to deal with this issue. The fundamental part of this approach is entanglement distribution via travelling photons emitted by matter qubits. However, randomness of the spontaneous emission in the matter qubits limits both the entanglement fidelity and the generation rate. In this paper, by numerical and analytical methods, we investigate the relationship between the entanglement affected by the spontaneous emission and the waveform of the pump pulse used in the photon generation. We confirm and analyze a rate-fidelity trade-off in the entanglement swapping with Gaussian pump pulses and show that a simple extension to non-Gaussian pump pulses improves the trade-off in a certain parameter region. Furthermore we extend our analysis to entanglement distribution in the general multipartite setting and show that the analysis of the bipartite entanglement can be straightforwardly applied in this case as well.

A Generic Analysis of Nucleon Decay Branching Fractions in Flipped SU(5) Grand Unification

In flipped SU(5) grand unified theories, the partial decay lifetimes of certain nucleon decay channels depend generically on an unknown unitary matrix, which arises when left-handed lepton fields are embedded into anti-fundamental representations of SU(5). This dependency is particularly relevant when the neutrino mass matrix has a generic structure, introducing uncertainty in the prediction of nucleon decay branching fractions within flipped SU(5). In this paper, we demonstrate that this uncertainty can be parametrized using two parameters, which can be determined by measuring the partial lifetimes of $p \to π^0 e^+$, $p \to π^0 μ^+$, and $n \to π^0 \barν$. In addition, we establish upper limits on the ratios of the decay widths of these channels, offering a potential method to test flipped SU(5) in future nucleon decay experiments.

Dielectric microwave resonator with large optical apertures for spin-based quantum devices

Towards a spin-based quantum microwave-optical photon transducer, we demonstrate a low-loss dielectric microwave resonator with an internal quality factor of $2.30\times10^4$ while accommodating optical apertures with a diameter of $8\, \mathrm{mm}$. The two seemingly conflicting requirements, high quality factor and large optical apertures, are satisfied thanks to the large dielectric constant of rutile ($\mathrm{TiO_2}$). The quality factor is limited by radiation loss, and we confirmed by numerical simulation that this dielectric resonator can achieve a quality factor exceeding $10^6$ by extending the height of the resonator enclosure. Using this resonator, we performed both continuous-wave (cw) and pulse electron spin resonance (ESR) spectroscopy on 2,2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH) crystalline powder and P1 centers in a diamond crystal in a dilution refrigerator. The cw ESR spectroscopy demonstrated high-cooperativity and strong spin-resonator coupling with the DPPH and P1 centers respectively, while the pulse ESR spectroscopy successfully measured longitudinal and transverse relaxation times.

Pressure-induced volumetric negative thermal expansion in CoZr2 superconductor

We investigate the thermal expansion and superconducting properties of a CuAl2-type (tetragonal) superconductor CoZr2 under high pressures. We perform high-pressure synchrotron X-ray diffraction in a pressure range of 2.9 GPa < P < 10.4 GPa and discover that CoZr2 exhibits volumetric negative thermal expansion under high pressures. Although the uniaxial positive thermal expansion (PTE) along the a-axis is observed under ambient pressure, that is suppressed by pressure, while the large uniaxial negative thermal expansion (NTE) along the c-axis is maintained under the pressure regime. As a result of a combination of the suppressed uniaxial PTE along the a-axis and uniaxial NTE along the c-axis, volumetric negative thermal expansion is achieved under high pressure in CoZr2. The mechanisms of volumetric NTE would be based on the flexible crystal structure caused by the soft Co-Co bond as seen in the iso-structural compound FeZr2, which exhibits uniaxial NTE along the c-axis. We also perform high-pressure electrical resistance measurements of CoZr2 to confirm the presence of superconductivity under the examined pressure regime in the range of 0.03 GPa < P < 41.9 GPa. We confirm the presence of superconductivity under all pressures and observe dome-like shape pressure dependence of superconducting transition temperature. Because of the coexistence of two phenomena, which are volumetric NTE and superconductivity, in CoZr2 under high pressure, the coexistence would be achievable under ambient pressure by tuning chemical compositions after our present observation.

Evaluation of insulating behavior by Pb Substitution and Pressure-Induced Superconductivity in La2O2Bi3-xPb1+xS6

We report synthesis, characterization, and physical properties of layered bismuth-sulfide compounds La2O2Bi3-xPb1+xS6. We synthesized a new La2O2Bi3PbS6 compound, whose crystal structure is similar to those of the La2O2Bi3AgS6 superconductor or La2O2Bi2Pb2S6 (insulator) with a four-layer-type conducting layer. The crystal structure of La2O2Bi3PbS6 is characterized in a tetragonal P4/nmm space group, and the lattice parameters are a = 4.084(1) Å and c = 19.71(2) Å. The obtained La2O2Bi3PbS6 sample exhibits narrow gap semiconductor (metallic-like) transport behavior with an anomaly near the 160 K. A metallic-like to insulator transition has been observed through Pb substitution, with increasing x in La2O2Bi3-xPb1+xS6. Furthermore, we applied external pressure for x = 0 and observed pressure-induced superconductivity. The onset of superconductivity appeared at 0.93 GPa, and the highest transition temperature was 3.1 K at 2.21 GPa.

Spin-Peierls transition to a Haldane phase

We present an organic compound exhibiting a spin-Peierls (SP) transition to an effective spin-1 antiferromagnetic uniform chain, that is, the Haldane chain. The clear disappearance of magnetization, accompanied by a structural phase transition, is well explained by the deformation to an effective spin-1 Haldane chain. The flexibility of the molecular orbitals in the organic radical compound allows the transformation of the exchange interactions into the Haldane state with different topologies. The SP transition in the present compound demonstrates a mechanism different from that of the conventional systems, paving another path for research in quantum phenomena originating from spin-lattice couplings.

Classification of ADHD Patients Using Kernel Hierarchical Extreme Learning Machine

Recently, the application of deep learning models to diagnose neuropsychiatric diseases from brain imaging data has received more and more attention. However, in practice, exploring interactions in brain functional connectivity based on operational magnetic resonance imaging data is critical for studying mental illness. Since Attention-Deficit and Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) is a type of chronic disease that is very difficult to diagnose in the early stages, it is necessary to improve the diagnosis accuracy of such illness using machine learning models treating patients before the critical condition. In this study, we utilize the dynamics of brain functional connectivity to model features from medical imaging data, which can extract the differences in brain function interactions between Normal Control (NC) and ADHD. To meet that requirement, we employ the Bayesian connectivity change-point model to detect brain dynamics using the local binary encoding approach and kernel hierarchical extreme learning machine for classifying features. To verify our model, we experimented with it on several real-world children's datasets, and our results achieved superior classification rates compared to the state-of-the-art models.

Force-detected Magnetic Resonance Imaging of Influenza Viruses in the Overcoupled Sensor Regime

Long and thin scanning force cantilevers are sensitive to small forces, but also vulnerable to detrimental non-contact interactions. Here we present an experiment with a cantilever whose spring constant and static deflection are dominated by the interaction between the tip and the surface, a regime that we refer to as ``overcoupled''. The interactions are an obstacle for ultrasensitive measurements like nanoscale magnetic resonance imaging (nanoMRI). We discuss several strategies to overcome the challenges presented by the overcoupling, and demonstrate proton nanoMRI measurements of individual influenza virus particles.

Structural Phase Transition and Possible Valence Instability of Ce$-4f$ Electron Induced by Pressure in CeCoSi

X-ray powder diffraction and electrical resistivity measurements were performed on the tetragonal compound CeCoSi under pressure to elucidate the phase boundary of the pressure-induced structural transition and the change in the 4$f$ electronic state. The temperature-pressure phase diagram has been determined from the shift of the Bragg peaks and from the anomaly in the resistivity. The critical pressure, $P_{\rm s}$ $\sim$ 4.9 GPa at 300 K, decreases to $P_{\rm s}$ $\sim$ 3.6 GPa at 10 K. The decrease of $P_{\rm s}$ is due not only to the decrease in volume of the unit cell but also to an anisotropic shrinkage by cooling. When crossing the boundary to the high-pressure phase, the resistivity shows a significant drop to exhibit a metallic temperature dependence. The results of this study strongly suggest that the structural phase transition can be ascribed to valence instability of Ce-$4f$ electron.

Polariton blockade in the Jaynes-Cummings-Hubbard model with trapped ions

We have experimentally observed the dynamics of a single polariton and two polaritons in a two-ion chain. By driving two trapped ions at a motional blue-sideband transition, we realize the anti-Jaynes-Cummings-Hubbard model. When a single polariton exists in a trapped-ion chain, the polariton hops between the ion sites. On the other hand, when there are single polaritons at each ion site, the hopping of the polaritons is suppressed because of the polariton-polariton interaction induced by the nonlinearity of the anti-Jaynes-Cummings interaction, thereby realizing the blockade of polariton hopping in the anti-Jaynes-Cummings-Hubbard model with trapped ions. Our work is a step towards the development of a trapped-ion based quantum simulator for strongly interacting polaritonic systems.

Wheelchair Behavior Recognition for Visualizing Sidewalk Accessibility by Deep Neural Networks

This paper introduces our methodology to estimate sidewalk accessibilities from wheelchair behavior via a triaxial accelerometer in a smartphone installed under a wheelchair seat. Our method recognizes sidewalk accessibilities from environmental factors, e.g. gradient, curbs, and gaps, which influence wheelchair bodies and become a burden for people with mobility difficulties. This paper developed and evaluated a prototype system that visualizes sidewalk accessibility information by extracting knowledge from wheelchair acceleration using deep neural networks. Firstly, we created a supervised convolutional neural network model to classify road surface conditions using wheelchair acceleration data. Secondly, we applied a weakly supervised method to extract representations of road surface conditions without manual annotations. Finally, we developed a self-supervised variational autoencoder to assess sidewalk barriers for wheelchair users. The results show that the proposed method estimates sidewalk accessibilities from wheelchair accelerations and extracts knowledge of accessibilities by weakly supervised and self-supervised approaches.

Development of next-generation timing system for the Japan Proton Accelerator Research Complex

A precise and stable timing system is necessary for high intensity proton accelerators such as the J-PARC. The original timing system, which was developed during the construction period of the J-PARC, has been working without major issues since 2006. After a decade of operation, the optical modules, which are key components for signal transfer, were discontinued already. Thus, the next-generation timing system for the J-PARC has been developed and built. The new system is designed to be compatible with the original system in terms of the operating principle. The new system utilizes modern high speed serial communication for the transfer of the clock, reference trigger, and type code. We describe the system configuration of the next-generation timing system and current status.

Blockade of phonon hopping in trapped ions in the presence of multiple local phonons

Driving an ion at a motional sideband transition induces the Jaynes--Cummings (JC) interaction. This JC interaction creates an anharmonic ladder of JC eigenstates, resulting in the suppression of phonon hopping due to energy conservation. Here, we realize phonon blockade in the presence of multiple local phonons in a trapped-ion chain. Our work establishes a key technological component for quantum simulation with multiple bosonic particles, which can simulate classically intractable problems.

Origin of magnetovolume effect in a cobaltite

The layered perovskite PrBaCo2O5.5+x demonstrates a strong negative thermal expansion (NTE) which holds potential for being fabricated into composites with zero thermal expansion. The NTE was found to be intimately associated with the spontaneous magnetic ordering, known as magnetovolume effect (MVE). Here we report with compelling evidences that the continuous-like MVE in PrBaCo2O5.5+x is intrinsically of discontinuous character, originating from an magnetoelectric transition from an antiferromagnetic insulating large-volume (AFILV) phase to a ferromagnetic metallic small-volume (FMSV) phase. Furthermore, the magnetoelectric effect (ME) shows high sensitivity to multiple external stimuli such as temperature, carrier doping, hydrostatic pressure, magnetic field etc. In contrast to the well-known ME such as colossal magnetoresistance and multiferroic effect which involve symmetry breaking of crystal structure, the ME in the cobaltite is purely isostructural. Our discovery provides a new pathway to realizing the ME as well as the NTE, which may find applications in new techniques.

Evolution of two bulk-superconducting phases in Sr0.5RE0.5FBiS2 (RE: La, Ce, Pr, Nd, Sm) by external hydrostatic pressure effect

Polycrystalline samples of Sr1-xRExFBiS2 (RE: La, Ce, Pr, Nd, and Sm) were synthesized via the solid-state reaction and characterized using synchrotron X-ray diffraction. Although all the Sr0.5RE0.5FBiS2 samples exhibited superconductivity at transition temperatures (Tc) within the range of 2.1-2.7 K under ambient pressure, the estimated superconducting volume fraction was small. This indicated the non-bulk nature of superconductivity in these samples under ambient pressure. A dramatic evolution of the bulk superconducting phases was achieved on applying an external hydrostatic pressure. Near pressures below 1 GPa, bulk superconductivity was induced with a Tc of 2.5-2.8 K, which is termed as the low-P phase. Moreover, the high-P phase (Tc = 10.0-10.8 K) featuring bulk characteristics was observed at higher pressures. Pressure-Tc phase diagrams indicated that the critical pressure for the emergence of the high-P phase tends to increase with decreasing ionic radius of the doped RE ions. According to the high-pressure X-ray diffraction measurements of Sr0.5La0.5FBiS2, a structural phase transition from tetragonal to monoclinic also occurred at approximately 1.1 GPa. Thus, this phase transition indicates a pressure-induced superconducting-superconducting transition similar to the transition in LaO0.5F0.5BiS2. Bulk superconducting phases in Sr0.5RE0.5FBiS2 induced by the external hydrostatic pressure effect are expected to be useful for evaluating the mechanisms of superconductivity in BiCh2-based superconductors.

Fast parametric two-qubit gates with suppressed residual interaction using a parity-violated superconducting qubit

We demonstrate fast two-qubit gates using a parity-violated superconducting qubit consisting of a capacitively-shunted asymmetric Josephson-junction loop under a finite magnetic flux bias. The second-order nonlinearity manifesting in the qubit enables the interaction with a neighboring single-junction transmon qubit via first-order inter-qubit sideband transitions with Rabi frequencies up to 30~MHz. Simultaneously, the unwanted static longitudinal~(ZZ) interaction is eliminated with ac Stark shifts induced by a continuous microwave drive near-resonant to the sideband transitions. The average fidelities of the two-qubit gates are evaluated with randomized benchmarking as 0.967, 0.951, 0.956 for CZ, iSWAP and SWAP gates, respectively.

Enhanced ion-cavity coupling through cavity cooling in the strong coupling regime

Incorporating optical cavities in ion traps is becoming increasingly important in the development of photonic quantum networks. However, the presence of the cavity can hamper efficient laser cooling of ions because of geometric constraints that the cavity imposes and an unfavourable Purcell effect that can modify the cooling dynamics substantially. On the other hand the coupling of the ion to the cavity can also be exploited to provide a mechanism to efficiently cool the ion. In this paper we demonstrate experimentally how cavity cooling can be implemented to improve the localisation of the ion and thus its coupling to the cavity. By using cavity cooling we obtain an enhanced ion-cavity coupling of $2π\times (16.7\pm 0.1)$ MHz, compared with $2π\times (15.2\pm 0.1)$ MHz when using only Doppler cooling.
