A Transponder Aggregator with Efficient Use of Filtering Function for Transponder Noise Suppression

Colorless, directionless, and contentionless reconfigurable optical add/drop multiplexing (CDC-ROADM) provides highly flexible physical layer network configuration. Such CDC-ROADM must operate in multiple wavelength bands which are being increasingly implemented in optical transmission systems. The operation in C+L bands requires switch devices used in CDC-ROADM to also be capable of multiband operation. Recent studies on wavelength division multiplexing (WDM) systems have pointed out the impact of amplified spontaneous emission (ASE) noise generated by signals of different wavelengths, which causes OSNR degradation. Therefore, it is desirable to filter out the ASE noise from different transponders when multiplexing multiple wavelengths at the transmitter side, especially in a system with non-wavelength selective combiners such as directional couplers and multicast switches. The use of transponder aggregators with filtering functions, such as the M x N wavelength selective switch (WSS), is preferable for this filtering. However, the downside of these devices is that it is difficult to provide economical multiband support. Therefore, we propose an economical transponder aggregator configuration by allowing a certain amount of ASE superposition and reducing the number of filtering functions. In this paper, we fabricated a prototype of the proposed transponder aggregator by combining silica-based planar lightwave circuit technology and C+L band WSS, both commercially available, and verified its feasibility through transmission experiments. The novel transponder aggregator is a practical solution for a multiband CDC-ROADM system with improved OSNR performance.

Giant Peltier Conductivity in an Uncompensated Semimetal Ta2PdSe6

Thermoelectric properties of single crystal Ta2PdSe6 is investigated by means of transport measurements, and a density functional calculation. We found a giant Peltier conductivity of 100 Acm-1K-1 at 10 K and successfully explained it by means of conventional semiconductor theory. We concluded that an uncompensated semimetal, high mobility, and heavy effective mass are responsible for the giant Peltier conductivity. Our finding opens a new ground in the field of thermoelectrics to explore much better semimetals for a new possible application such as an electric current generator for a superconducting magnet.

First demonstration of C + L band CDCROADM with simple node configuration using multiband switching devices

While ultrahigh-baud-rate optical signals are effective for extending the transmission distance of large capacity signals, they also reduce the number of wavelengths that can be arranged in a band because of their wider bandwidth. This reduces the flexibility of optical path configuration in reconfigurable optical add/drop multiplexing (ROADM) networks. In colorless, directionless and contentionless (CDC)-ROADM in particular, the effect reduces the add/drop ratio at a node. Multiband ROADM systems are an effective countermeasure for overcoming this issue, but they make the node configuration more complicated and its operation more difficult. In this paper, we analyze the challenges of C + L band CDC-ROADM and show that optical switch devices that operate over multiple bands are effective in meeting them. For this purpose, we built a C + L band CDC-ROADM node based on C + L band wavelength selective switches (WSSs) and multicast switches (MCSs) and confirmed its effectiveness experimentally. In particular, to simplify the node configuration, we propose a reduction in the number of optical amplifiers used for node loss compensation and experimentally verify its feasibility.

Room Temperature Thermoelectric Properties of Isostructural Selenides Ta2PdS6 and Ta2PdSe6

We have measured thermoelectric properties of Ta2PdX6 (X=S, Se) around room temperature using single crystal samples. We find that the power factor of Ta2PdX6 is relatively high from middle-low to room temperatures, and notably Ta2PdSe6 shows the largest power factor among thermoelectric materials with an electrical conductivity of 10-2 Ωcm at 300 K. Ta2PdS6 will be a possible candidate for a Peltier cooling material if the lattice thermal conductivity is reduced by chemical substitution.

Spin treacle in a frustrated magnet observed with spin current

By means of spin current, the flow of spin angular momentum, we find a regime of "spin treacle" in a frustrated magnetic system. To establish its existence, we have performed spin transport measurements in nanometer-scale spin glasses. At temperatures high enough that the magnetic moments fluctuate at high frequencies, the spin Hall angle, the conversion yield between spin current and charge current, is independent of temperature. The spin Hall angle starts to decrease at a certain temperature $T^{*}$ and completely vanishes at a lower temperature. We argue that the latter corresponds to the spin freezing temperature $T_{\rm f}$ of the nanometer-scale spin glass, where the direction of conduction electron spin is randomized by the exchange coupling with the localized moments. The present experiment \textit{quantitatively} verifies the existence of a distinct "spin treacle" between $T_{\rm f}$ and $T^{*}$. We have also quantified a time scale of fluctuation of local magnetic moments in the spin treacle from the spin relaxation time of conduction electrons.

Butterfly-shaped magnetoresistance in triangular-lattice antiferromagnet Ag$_2$CrO$_2$

Spintronic devices using antiferromagnets (AFMs) are promising candidates for future applications. Recently, many interesting physical properties have been reported with AFM-based devices. Here we report a butterfly-shaped magnetoresistance (MR) in a micrometer-sized triangular-lattice antiferromagnet Ag$_2$CrO$_2$. The material consists of two-dimensional triangular-lattice CrO$_2$ layers with antiferromagnetically coupled $S$ = 3/2 spins and Ag$_2$ layers with high electrical conductivity. The butterfly-shaped MR appears only when the magnetic field is applied perpendicularly to the CrO$_2$ plane with the maximum MR ratio ($\approx$ 15%) at the magnetic ordering temperature. These features are distinct from those observed in conventional magnetic materials. We propose a theoretical model where fluctuations of partially disordered spins with the Ising anisotropy play an essential role in the butterfly-shaped MR in Ag$_2$CrO$_2$.

Quantum oscillations with magnetic hysteresis observed in CeTe$_{3}$ thin films

We have performed magnetotransport measurements in CeTe$_{3}$ thin films down to $0.2~{\rm K}$. It is known that CeTe$_{3}$ has two magnetic transitions at $T_{\rm N1} \approx 3~{\rm K}$ and $T_{\rm N2} \approx 1~{\rm K}$. A clear Shubnikov-de-Haas (SdH) oscillation was observed at $4~{\rm K}$, demonstrating the strong two-dimensional nature in this material. Below $T_{\rm N2}$, the SdH oscillation has two frequencies, indicating that the Fermi surface could be slightly modulated due to the second magnetic transition. We also observed a magnetic hysteresis in the SdH oscillation below $T_{\rm N1}$. Especially, there is a unique spike in the magnetoresistance at $B \approx 0.6~{\rm T}$ only when the magnetic field is swept from a high enough field (more than $2~{\rm T}$) to zero field.

Weak Ferroelectricity in n = 2 pseudo Ruddlesden-Popper-type niobate Li2SrNb2O7

Li2SrNb2O7 (LSNO) crystallizes in a structure closely related to n = 2 Ruddlesden-Popper-type compounds, which is gen-erally formed by intergrowth of 2-dimensional perovskite-type blocks and rocksalt-type layers. The present study demonstrates a coexistence of spontaneous polarization and anti-ferroelectric-like nonlinear response in LSNO at 80 K, suggesting a weak ferroelectricity below the phase transition temperature of 217 K. A combination of first-principles cal-culations and single crystal x-ray diffractions clarifies a polar P21cn structure for the ground state of LSNO, where an in-plane anti-ferroelectric displacement and an out-of-plane polar shift simultaneously take place. The present study offers a new perspective to design ferroelectric and antiferroelectric materials with Ruddlesden-Popper-type compounds.

High pressure crystal structure and electronic properties of bismuth silicate Bi2SiO5 from synchrotron experiment and first principle calculations

The high pressure structural properties of bismuth oxide Bi2SiO5 have been investigated up to 28 GPa using in situ powder synchrotron X-ray diffraction and up to 50 GPa with DFT calculations. The monoclinic structure is found to persist up to about 20 GPa, where a notable change in the compressibility occurs. The DFT data imply that this is due to a second-order phase transition from the ambient condition monoclinic structure with space group Cc to an orthorhombic polymorph with space group Cmcm. This transition involves the straightening of the chains formed by corner-connected SiO4 tetrahedra, that suppresses the ferroelectricity in the high pressure, centrosymmetric phase of Bi2SiO5. The stereo-chemical activity of the Bi3+ lone electron pair is found to decrease with increasing pressure, but it can still be identifed in the calculated electron density difference maps at 50 GPa.

Dynamical coupling of dilute magnetic impurities with quantum spin liquid state in the S = 3/2 dimer compound Ba3ZnRu2O9

We have investigated the dilute magnetic impurity effect on the magnetic properties of a quantum spin liquid candidate Ba3ZnRu2O9 and a spin gapped compound Ba3CaRu2O9. The magnetic ground state of each compound stands against 2% substitution of magnetic impurities for Zn or Ca. We have found that the magnetic response of these impurities, which behave as paramagnetic spins, depends on the host materials and the difference of the two manifests itself in the Weiss temperature, which can hardly be explained by the dilute magnetic impurities alone in the case of Ba3ZnRu2O9. We consider a contribution from the Ru5+ ions which would appear only in the substituted Ba3ZnRu2O9 and discuss a possible physical meaning of the observed Weiss temperature.

Magneto-thermopower in the Weak Ferromagnetic Oxide CaRu0.8Sc0.2O3: An Experimental Test for the Kelvin Formula in a Magnetic Material

We have measured the resistivity, the thermopower, and the specific heat of the weak ferromagnetic oxide CaRu0.8Sc0.2O3 in external magnetic fields up to 140 kOe below 80 K. We have observed that the thermopower Q is significantly suppressed by magnetic fields at around the ferromagnetic transition temperature of 30 K, and have further found that the magneto-thermopower ΔQ(H, T) = Q(H, T) - Q(0, T) is roughly proportional to the magneto-entropy ΔS(H, T) = S(H, T)-S(0, T).We discuss this relationship between the two quantities in terms of the Kelvin formula, and find that the observed ΔQ is quantitatively consistent with the values expected from the Kelvin formula, a possible physical meaning of which is discussed.

Absence of magnetic long range order in Ba$_3$ZnRu$_2$O$_9$: A spin-liquid candidate in the $S=3/2$ dimer lattice

We have discovered a novel candidate for a spin liquid state in a ruthenium oxide composed of dimers of $S = $ 3/2 spins of Ru$^{5+}$,Ba$_3$ZnRu$_2$O$_9$. This compound lacks a long range order down to 37 mK, which is a temperature 5000-times lower than the magnetic interaction scale of around 200 K. Partial substitution for Zn can continuously vary the magnetic ground state from an antiferromagnetic order to a spin-gapped state through the liquid state. This indicates that the spin-liquid state emerges from a delicate balance of inter- and intra-dimer interactions, and the spin state of the dimer plays a vital role. This unique feature should realize a new type of quantum magnetism.

Intrinsic Enhancement of Dielectric Permittivity in (Nb + In) co-doped TiO2 single crystals

The development of dielectric materials with colossal permittivity is important for the miniaturization of electronic devices and fabrication of high-density energy-storage devices. The electron-pinned defect-dipoles has been recently proposed to boost the permittivity of (Nb + In) co-doped TiO2 to 105. However, the follow-up studies suggest an extrinsic contribution to the colossal permittivity from thermally excited carriers. Herein, we demonstrate a marked enhancement in the permittivity of (Nb + In) co-doped TiO2 single crystals at sufficiently low temperatures such that the thermally excited carriers are frozen out and exert no influence on the dielectric response. The results indicate that the permittivity attains quadruple of that for pure TiO2. This finding suggests that the electron-pinned defect-dipoles add an extra dielectric response to that of the TiO2 host matrix. The results offer a novel approach for the development of functional dielectric materials with large permittivity by engineering complex defects into bulk materials.

Novel Charge Ordering in the Trimer Iridium Oxide BaIrO3

We have prepared polycrystalline samples of the trimer Ir oxide BaIrO3 with face-shared Ir3O12 trimers, and have investigated the origin of the phase transition at 182 K by measuring resistivity, thermopower, magnetization and synchrotron x-ray diffraction. We propose a possible electronic model and transition mechanism, starting from a localized electron picture on the basis of the Rietveld refinement. Within this model, BaIrO3 can be basically regarded as a Mott insulator, when the Ir3O12 trimer is identified to one pseudo-atom or one lattice site. The transition can be viewed as a transition from the Mott insulator phase to a kind of charge ordered insulator phase.

Ferromagnetic Cluster Glass Phase Embedded in a Paramagnetic and Metallic Host in Non-uniform Magnetic System CaRu_{1-x}Sc_{x}O_{3}

We have investigated both static and dynamic magnetic properties of polycrystalline CaRu$_{1-x}$Sc$_{x}$O$_{3}$ system in order to clarify the role of Sc ions as a disorder for magnetic ordering. We have observed typical features of a ferromagnetic cluster glass state below around 40 K: (i) a broad, frequency-dependent peak in the ac magnetic susceptibility, (ii) a slow relaxation of the magnetization, and (iii) a continuous increase in the dc magnetic susceptibility in field cooling process. The composition dependence of characteristic parameters for the cluster glass state suggests that chemical segregation can hardly explain the clustering mechanism. We propose a possible picture that the ferromagnetic clusters are distributed uniformly and form the glassy state embedded in the paramagnetic and metallic host of CaRuO$_{3}$.

Non-uniform magnetic system driven by non-magnetic ion substitution in CaRu1-xScxO3:Two-component analysis

We have studied magnetic and transport properties in polycrystalline CaRu1-xScxO3 for 0 =< x =< 0.20 in order to clarify the substitution effects of a non-magnetic trivalent ion. We find that a ferromagnetic transition with Tc = 30 K is observed in Sc-substituted samples. The composition dependence of the Curie-Weiss temperature implies that the magnetic susceptibility has a paramagnetic contribution with negative theta and a ferromagnetic contribution with positive theta. The field dependence of magnetization at 2 K is also understood as a summation of the ferromagnetic and paramagnetic components. These results suggest that CaRu1-xScxO3 is a non-uniform magnetic system. The relationship between the ferromagnetic ordering and the transport properties is also discussed.
