Fermionization of conformal boundary states

We construct the complete set of boundary states of two-dimensional fermionic CFTs using that of the bosonic counterpart. We see that there are two groups of boundary conditions, which contributes to the open-string partition function by characters with integer coefficients, or with $\sqrt{2}$ times integer coefficients. We argue that, using the argument of [JHEP 09 (2020) 018], this $\sqrt{2}$ indicates a single unpaired Majorana zero mode, and that these two groups of boundary conditions are mutually incompatible. We end the paper by mentioning a possible interpretation of the result in terms of the entanglement entropy.

Fibonacci topological phase in arrays of anyonic chains

Fibonacci anyon, an exotic quasi-particle excitation, plays a pivotal role in realization of a quantum computer. Starting from a $SU(2)_4$ topological phase, in this paper we demonstrate a way to construct a Fibonacci topological phase which has only one non-trivial excitation described by the Fibonacci anyon. We show that arrays of anyonic chains created by excitations of the $SU(2)_4$ phase leads to the Fibonacci phase. We further demonstrate that our theoretical propositions can be extended to other topological phases.

Coupled wire construction of a topological phase with chiral tricritical Ising edge modes

Tricritical Ising (TCI) phase transition is known to occur in several interacting spin and Majorana fermion models and is described in terms of a supersymmetric conformal field theory (CFT) with central charge $c=7/10$. The field content of this CFT is highly nontrivial and includes among its primary fields the Fibonacci anyon, making it of potential interest to strategies seeking to implement fault-tolerant topological quantum computation with non-Abelian phases of matter. In this paper we explore the possibility that a TCI CFT can occur at the edge of a gapped two-dimensional topological state as a stable phase. We discuss a possible realization of this 2D phase based on a coupled-wire construction using the Grover-Sheng-Vishwanath chain model of Majorana zero modes coupled to Ising spins which is known to undergo the TCI phase transition. From the combined analysis using mean-field theory, conformal field theory and density matrix renormalization group (DMRG) on 2- and 4-leg ladders, we find that the left- and right-moving gapless TCI modes become spatially separated and reside on two opposite edges of the system, forming a precursor of the required 2D topological phase.

Chiral topologically ordered insulating phases in arrays of interacting integer quantum Hall islands

We study networks of Coulomb-blockaded integer quantum Hall islands with even fillings $ν=2k$ ($k$ being an integer), including cases with $2k$ layers each of $ν=1$ fillings. Allowing only spin-current interactions between the islands (i.e., without any charge transfer), we obtain solvable models leading to a rich set of insulating $SU(2)_k$ topologically ordered phases. The case with $k=1$ is dual to the Kalmeyer-Laughlin phase, $k=2$ to Kitaev's chiral spin liquid and the Moore-Read state, and $k=3$ contains a Fibonacci anyon that may be utilized for universal topological quantum computation. Additionally, we show how the $SU(2)_k$ topological phases may be obtained also in an array of islands with $ν=2k$ integer quantum Hall states and critical spin chains in a checkerboard pattern. The array and checkerboard constructions gap out the charge mode and additional "flavor" modes by virtue of their geometry. Furthermore, we find that a fine tuning of the system parameter is not needed in the checkerboard configuration and the $ν=2$ case. We also discuss their bulk excitations, and show that their thermal Hall conductance is universal, reflecting the central charge $c=3k/(k+2)$ of the chiral edge modes.

Supersymmetry in the Insulating Phase of a Chain of Majorana Cooper Pair Boxes

The charging energy $U$ of a small superconducting island containing Majorana zero modes---a Majorana Cooper-pair box---induces interactions between the Majorana zero modes. Considering a chain of many such boxes, a topological superconductor-insulator transition occurs when $U$ is much larger than the transfer matrix element $t$ between the boxes. In this Letter, we focus on the insulting phases occurring in this regime. We show that there are several competing insulating phases, and that the transition between them is described by a supersymmetric field theory with a central charge $c=7/10$. We obtain this result by mapping the model to a spin-$1$ system and through a field theoretical approach. The microscopic model we propose consists of a chain of Majorana Cooper-pair boxes with \textit{local} tunneling between Majorana zero modes and \textit{local} charging energy terms, which can be controlled by gate potentials, thus making its realization more feasible.

Spin liquids from Majorana Zero Modes in a Cooper Box

We propose a path for constructing diverse interacting spin systems from topological nanowires in Cooper Boxes. The wires are grouped into a three-wire building block called an 'hexon', consisting of six Majorana zero modes. In the presence of a strong charging energy, the hexon becomes a Cooper box equivalent to two spin-$1/2$ degrees of freedom. By considering arrays of hexons and controlling the distances between the various wires, one can tune the Hamiltonian governing the low-energy spins, thus providing a route for controllably constructing interacting spin systems in one- and two-dimensions. We explicitly present realizations of the one-dimensional spin-$1/2$ XXZ chain, as well as the transverse field Ising model. We propose an experiment capable of revealing the nature of critical points in such effective spin systems by applying a local gate voltage and measuring the induced charge at a distance. To demonstrate the applicability of this approach to two-dimensions, we provide a scheme for realizing the topologically ordered Yao-Kivelson spin-liquid model, which has a collective Majorana edge mode, similar to the B-phase of Kitaev's honeycomb model.

Generalized parafermions and non-local Josephson effect in multi-layer systems

We theoretically investigate the effects of backscattering and superconducting proximity terms between the edges of two multi-layer fractional quantum Hall (FQH) systems. While the different layers are strongly interacting, we assume that tunneling between them is absent. Studying the boundaries between regions gapped by the two mechanisms in an $N$-layer system, we find $N$ localized zero-mode operators realizing a generalized parafermionic algebra. We further propose an experiment capable of probing imprints of the generalized parafermionic bound states. This is done by coupling different superconducting contacts to different layers, and examining the periodicity of the Josephson effect as a function of the various relative superconducting phases. Remarkably, even if we apply a phase difference between the superconductors in one layer, we induce a Josephson current at the other layers due to inter-layer interactions. Furthermore, while the Josephson effect is commonly used to probe only charged degrees of freedom, the possibility of independently controlling the superconducting phase differences between the layers allows us to find imprints of the neutral modes of the underlying multi-layer system. In particular, we propose two configurations, one of which is capable of isolating the signal associated with the charge modes, while the other probes the neutral modes.

All-electrical generation and control of odd-frequency s-wave Cooper pairs in double quantum dots

We propose an all-electrical experimental setup to detect and manipulate the amplitude of odd-frequency pairing in a double quantum dot. Odd-frequency pair amplitude is induced from the breakdown of orbital symmetry when Cooper pairs are injected in the double dot with electrons in different dots. When the dot levels are aligned with the Fermi energy, i.e., on resonance, nonlocal Andreev processes are directly connected to the presence of odd-frequency pairing. Therefore, their amplitude can be manipulated by tuning the level positions. Detection of nonlocal Andreev processes by conductance measurements contributes a direct proof of the existence of odd-frequency pair amplitude and is available using current experimental techniques.

Theory of time reversal topological superconductivity in double Rashba wires -- symmetries of Cooper pair and Andreev bound states

We study the system of double Rashba wires brought into the proximity to an $s$-wave superconductor. The time reversal invariant topological superconductivity is realized if the interwire pairing corresponding to crossed Andreev reflection dominates over the standard intrawire pairing. We derive the topological criterion and show that the system hosts zero energy Andreev bound states such as a Kramers pair of Majorana fermions. We classify symmetry of the Cooper pairs focusing on the four degrees of freedom, $i.e.$, frequency, spin, spatial parity inside wires, and spatial parity between wires. The magnitude of the odd-frequency pairing is strongly enhanced in the topological state. We also explore properties of junctions occurring in such double wire systems. If one section of the junction is in the topological state and the other is in the trivial state, the energy dispersion of Andreev bound states is proportional to $\sim\pm\sinφ$, where $φ$ denotes the macroscopic phase difference between two sections. This behavior can be intuitively explained by the couplings of a Kramers pair of Majorana fermions and spin-singlet $s$-wave Cooper pair and can also be understood by analyzing an effective continuum model of the $s+p$/$s$-wave superconductor hybrid system.

Josephson current in a normal-metal nanowire coupled to superconductor/ferromagnet/superconductor junction

We consider superconducting nanowire proximity coupled to superconductor / ferromagnet / superconductor junction, where the magnetization penetrates into superconducting segment in nanowire decaying as $\sim\exp[-\frac{\mid n \mid}ξ]$ with site index $n$ and the decay length $ξ$. We tune chemical potential and spin-orbit coupling so that topological superconducting regime hosting Majorana fermion is realized for long $ξ$. We find that when $ξ$ becomes shorter, zero energy state at the interface between superconductor and ferromagnet splits into two away from zero energy. Accordingly, the behavior of Josephson current is drastically changed due to this "zero mode-non-zero mode crossover". By tuning the model parameters, we find an almost second-harmonic current-phase relation, $\sin2φ$, with phase difference $φ$. Based on the analysis of Andreev bound state (ABS), we clarify that current-phase relation is determined by coupling of the states within the energy gap. We find that the emergence of crossing points of ABS is a key ingredient to generate $\sin2φ$ dependence in current-phase relation. We further study both the energy and $φ$ dependence of pair amplitudes in the ferromagnetic region. For long $ξ$, odd-frequency spin-triplet $s$-wave component is dominant. The magnitude of the odd-frequency pair amplitude is enhanced at the energy level of ABS.

Odd-frequency pair in topological superconductivity of 1D magnetic chain

A chain of magnetic atoms with non-collinear spin configuration on a superconductor is a promising new system that can host Majorana Fermions (MFs). In this study, we clarify that in the presence of MFs, an odd-frequency Cooper pair is generated at the edge of the chain. Furthermore, it is revealed that this feature is robust against the distance between magnetic atoms. We also elucidate the close relationship between the pair amplitude of the odd-frequency pair, the parity of the wave function, and the direction of the MF spin. If Rashba-type spin-orbit coupling is included, MFs can be realized even in a collinear alignment of magnetic atoms, $i.e.$, in a ferromagnetic or anti-ferromagnetic chain on a superconductor. Then, the odd-frequency pairing is generated at the edge, similar to the non-collinear case. Based on our results, it can be concluded that the detection of the zero energy peak of the local density of states by scanning tunneling microscopy at the edge of the magnetic chain is strong evidence for the generation of odd-frequency pairing.

Majorana edge states and topological properties in 1D/2D Rashba semiconductor proximity coupled to iron-based superconductor

We study Majorana edge states and their topological properties of one-dimensional(1D) and two-dimensional(2D) Rashba semiconductor deposited on iron-based superconductor under the applied Zeeman field for various directions. Using the recursive Green's function method, we calculate the local density of states(LDOS) both for $s_{\pm}$ and $s_{++}$-wave pairings. We elucidate that it shows anisotropic response to the applied Zeeman field specific to Majorana edge states. This anisotropy can be understood by the winding number, which shows whether the present system is topological or not. The resulting LDOS and winding numbers for $s_{\pm}$ and $s_{++}$-wave pairings are significantly different at the lower Zeeman field. These results serve as a guide to determine the pairing symmetry of iron-pnictide.
