Machine Learning Study on the Flat-Band States Constructed by Molecular-Orbital Representation with Randomness

We study the characteristic probability density distribution of random flat band models by machine learning. The models considered here are constructed on the basis of the molecular-orbital representation, which guarantees the existence of the macroscopically degenerate zero-energy modes even in the presence of randomness. We find that flat band states are successfully distinguished from conventional extended and localized states, indicating the characteristic feature of the flat band states. We also find that the flat band states can be detected when the target data are defined in the different lattice from the training data, which implies the universal feature of the flat band states constructed by the molecular-orbital representation.

Machine learning of mirror skin effects in the presence of disorder

Non-Hermitian systems with mirror symmetry may exhibit mirror skin effect which is the extreme sensitivity of the spectrum and eigenstates on the boundary condition due to the non-Hermitian topology protected by mirror symmetry. In this paper, we report that the mirror skin effect survives even against disorder which breaks the mirror symmetry. Specifically, we demonstrate the robustness of the skin effect by employing the neural network which systematically predicts the presence/absence of the skin modes, a large number of localized states around the edge. The trained neural network detects skin effects in high accuracy, which allows us to obtain the phase diagram. We also calculate the probability by the neural network for each of states. The above results are also confirmed by calculating the inverse participation ratio.

Higher-order topological phases in a spring-mass model on a breathing kagome lattice

We propose a realization of higher-order topological phases in a spring-mass model with a breathing kagome structure. To demonstrate the existence of the higher-order topological phases, we characterize the topological properties and show that the corner states appear under the fixed boundary condition. To characterize the topological properties, we introduce a formula for the $\mathbb{Z}_3$ Berry phases in the Brillouin zone. From the numerical result of this $\mathbb{Z}_3$ Berry phase, we have elucidated that coupling between the longitudinal and transverse modes yields a state characterized by the Berry phase $\frac{2π}{3}$ for our mechanical breathing kagome model. In addition, we suggest that the corner states can be detected experimentally through a forced vibration.

$\mathbb{Z}_Q$ Berry Phase for Higher-Order Symmetry-Protected Topological Phases

We propose the $\mathbb{Z}_Q$ Berry phase as a topological invariant for higher-order symmetry-protected topological (HOSPT) phases for two- and three-dimensional systems. It is topologically stable for electron-electron interactions assuming the gap remains open. As a concrete example, we show that the Berry phase is quantized in $\mathbb{Z}_4$ and characterizes the HOSPT phase of the extended Benalcazar-Bernevig-Hughes (BBH) model, which contains the next-nearest neighbor hopping and the intersite Coulomb interactions. In addition, we introduce the $\mathbb{Z}_4$ Berry phase for the spin-model-analog of the BBH model, whose topological invariant has not been found so far. Furthermore, we demonstrate the Berry phase is quantized in $\mathbb{Z}_4$ for the three-dimensional version of the BBH model. We also confirm the bulk-corner correspondence between the $\mathbb{Z}_4$ Berry phase and the corner states in the HOSPT phases.

Higher-Order Topological Phase in a Honeycomb-Lattice Model with Anti-Kekulé Distortion

Higher-order topological insulators have attracted considerable interests as a novel topological phase of matter, where topologically non-trivial nature of bulk protects boundary states whose co-dimension is larger than one. It has been revealed that the alternating pattern of hopping amplitudes in two-dimensional lattices provides a promising route to realization of the higher-order topological insulators. In this paper, we propose that a honeycomb-lattice model with anti-Kekulé distortion hosts a higher-order topological phase. Here, the term anti-Kekulé distortion means that the pattern of strong and weak hoppings is opposite to that for the conventional Kekulé distortion. We demonstrate the existence of the higher-order topological phase by calculating the $\mathbb{Z}_6$ Berry phase that serves as a bulk topological invariant of the higher-order topological phase, and by showing the existence of corner states.

Phase diagram of disordered higher-order topological insulator: A machine learning study

A higher-order topological insulator is a new concept of topological states of matter, which is characterized by the emergent boundary states whose dimensionality is lower by more than two compared with that of the bulk, and draws a considerable interest. Yet, its robustness against disorders is still unclear. Here we investigate a phase diagram of higher-order topological insulator phases in a breathing kagome model in the presence of disorders, by using a state-of-the-art machine learning technique. We find that the corner states survive against the finite strength of disorder potential as long as the energy gap is not closed, indicating the stability of the higher-order topological phases against the disorders.

Entanglement Chern number for three-dimensional topological insulators: Characterization by Weyl points of entanglement Hamiltonians

We propose characterization of the three-dimensional topological insulator by using the Chern number for the entanglement Hamiltonian (entanglement Chern number). Here we take the extensive spin partition of the system, that pulls out the quantum entanglement between up spin and down spin of the many-body ground state. In three dimensions, the topological insulator phase is described by the section entanglement Chern number, which is the entanglement Chern number for a periodic plane in the Brillouin zone. The section entanglement Chern number serves as an interpolation of the $Z_2$ invariants defined on time-reversal invariant planes. We find that the change of the section entanglement Chern number protects the Weyl point of the entanglement Hamiltonian and the parity of the number of Weyl points distinguishes the strong topological insulator phase from the weak topological insulator phase.

Entanglement Chern Number of the Kane-Mele Model with Ferromagnetism

The entanglement Chern number, the Chern number for the entanglement Hamiltonian, is used to charac- terize the Kane-Mele model, which is a typical model of the quantum spin Hall phase with the time reversal symmetry. We first obtain the global phase diagram of the Kane-Mele model in terms of the entanglement spin Chern number, which is defined by using a spin subspace as a subspace to be traced out in preparing the entanglement Hamiltonian. We further demonstrate the effectiveness of the entanglement Chern number without the time reversal symmetry and spin conservation by extending the Kane-Mele model to include the Zeeman term. The numerical results confirm that the sum of the entanglement spin Chern number equals to the Chern number.
