Inverse scattering in an asymptotically flat multilayer domain

We consider a scattering problem for a wave equation $\partial_t^2 u = \frac{1}{\sqrt{g}}\partial_i(\sqrt{g}g^{ij}\partial_j)u$ in a multilayer domain $Ω\subset {\bf R}^{n+1}_x = {\bf R}^n_y \times {\bf R}^1_{x^{n+1}}$ of the form $Ω= \mathcal K \cup Ω_1 \cup \cdots \cup Ω_N$, where $\mathcal K$ is a bounded open set and $Ω_k$ is asymptotically equal to a slab domain ${\bf R}^n \times (c_k,c_k + d_k)$ as $|y| \to \infty$. Assuming that $\partial_x^α\big(g_{ij}(x) - δ_{ij}\big) = O(|x|^{-|α| - δ_0}), \ δ_0 > 1, \forall α$, we show that $Ω$ and $g^{ij}$ are determined by one diagonal component $S_{11}(λ)$, for all energies, of the S-matrix associated with the slab $Ω_1$, provided $Ω_1$ is flat: $Ω_1 \cap \{|y| > R\} = \{|y| > R\} \times (c_1, c_1+d_1)$ for some constants $c_1, d_1, R > 0$, and the metric is Euclidean on $Ω_1\cap \{|y| > R\}$.

Rellich type theorem and unique continuation property for discrete Maxwell operators

We study the Rellich type theorem (RT) for the Maxwell operator __ D = D____0 on Z3 in a constant anisotropic medium, i.e., the permittivity and permeability of which are constant non-scalar diagonal matrices. We also prove the unique continuation property (UCP) in the exterior of a compact convex set Kint $\subset$ Z3 for the perturbed Maxwell operator __ Dp = D__p __0 on Z3 for which the permittivity and permeability are locally perturbed from a constant matrix on a compact subset in Kint .

Inverse scattering problems for non-linear wave equations on Lorentzian manifolds

We show that an inverse scattering problem for a semilinear wave equation can be solved on a manifold having an asymptotically Minkowskian infinity, that is, scattering functionals determine the topology, differentiable structure, and the conformal type of the manifold. Moreover, the metric and the coefficient of the non-linearity are determined up to a multiplicative transformation. The manifold on which the inverse problem is considered is allowed to be an open, globally hyperbolic manifold which may have non-trivial topology or several infinities (i.e., ends) of which at least one has to be of the asymptotically Minkowskian type. To formulate the inverse problems we define a new type of data, non-linear scattering functionals, which are defined also in the cases where the classically defined scattering operators are not well-defined. This makes it possible to solve inverse problems also in cases where some of the incoming waves lead to a blow-up of the scattered solution. We use non-linear interaction of waves as a beneficial tool that helps to solve the inverse problem. The corresponding inverse problem for the linear wave equation still remains unsolved.

Gel'fand's inverse problem for the graph Laplacian

We study the discrete Gel'fand's inverse boundary spectral problem of determining a finite weighted graph. Suppose that the set of vertices of the graph is a union of two disjoint sets: $X=B\cup G$, where $B$ is called the set of the boundary vertices and $G$ is called the set of the interior vertices. We consider the case where the vertices in the set $G$ and the edges connecting them are unknown. Assume that we are given the set $B$ and the pairs $(λ_j,ϕ_j|_B)$, where $λ_j$ are the eigenvalues of the graph Laplacian and $ϕ_j|_B$ are the values of the corresponding eigenfunctions at the vertices in $B$. We show that the graph structure, namely the unknown vertices in $G$ and the edges connecting them, along with the weights, can be uniquely determined from the given data, if every boundary vertex is connected to only one interior vertex and the graph satisfies the following property: any subset $S\subseteq G$ of cardinality $|S|\geqslant 2$ contains two extreme points. A point $x\in S$ is called an extreme point of $S$ if there exists a point $z\in B$ such that $x$ is the unique nearest point in $S$ from $z$ with respect to the graph distance. This property is valid for several standard types of lattices and their perturbations.

Inverse problems for discrete heat equations and random walks for a class of graphs

We study the inverse problem of determining a finite weighted graph $(X,E)$ from the source-to-solution map on a vertex subset $B\subset X$ for heat equations on graphs, where the time variable can be either discrete or continuous. We prove that this problem is equivalent to the discrete version of the inverse interior spectral problem, provided that there does not exist a nonzero eigenfunction of the weighted graph Laplacian vanishing identically on $B$. In particular, we consider inverse problems for discrete-time random walks on finite graphs. We show that under a novel geometric condition (called the Two-Points Condition), the graph structure and the transition matrix of the random walk can be uniquely recovered from the distributions of the first passing times on $B$, or from the observation on $B$ of one realization of the random walk.

Inverse problems for locally perturbed lattices -- Discrete Hamiltonian and quantum graph

We consider the inverse scattering problems for two types of Schrödinger operators on locally perturbed periodic lattices. For the discrete Hamiltonian, the knowledge of the S-matrix for all energies determines the graph structure and the coefficients of the Hamiltonian. For locally perturbed equilateral metric graphs, the knowledge of the S-matrix for all energies determines the graph structure.

Inverse scattering on the quantum graph for graphene

We consider the inverse scattering on the quantum graph associated with the hexagonal lattice. Assuming that the potentials on the edges are compactly supported and symmetric, we show that the S-matrix for all energies in any given open set in the continuous spectrum determines the potentials.

Continuum limit for lattice Schrödinger operators

We study the behavior of solutions of the Helmholtz equation $(- Δ_{disc,h} - E)u_h = f_h$ on a periodic lattice as the mesh size $h$ tends to 0. Projecting to the eigenspace of a characteristic root $λ_h(ξ)$ and using a gauge transformation associated with the Dirac point, we show that the gauge transformed solution $u_h$ converges to that for the equation $(P(D_x) - E)v = g$ for a continuous model on ${\bf R}^d$, where $λ_h(ξ) \to P(ξ)$. For the case of the hexagonal and related lattices, {in a suitable energy region}, it converges to that for the Dirac equation. For the case of the square lattice, triangular lattice, {hexagonal lattice (in another energy region)} and subdivision of a square lattice, one can add a scalar potential, and the solution of the lattice Schr{ö}dinger equation $( - Δ_{disc,h} +V_{disc,h} - E)u_h = f_h$ converges to that of the continuum Schr{ö}dinger equation $(P(D_x) + V(x) -E)u = f$.

Inverse scattering on non-compact manifolds with general metric

The problems we address in this paper are the spectral theory and the inverse problems associated with Laplacians on non-compact Riemannian manifolds and more general manifolds admitting conic singularities. In particular, we study the inverse scattering problem where one observes the asymptotic behavior of the solutions of the Helmholtz equation on the manifold. These observations are analogous to Heisenberg's scattering matrix in quantum mechanics. We then show that the knowledge of the scattering matrix determines the topology and the metric of the manifold. In the paper we develop a unified approach to consider scattering problems on manifolds that can have very different type of infinities, such as regular hyperbolic ends, cusps, and cylindrical ends related to models encountered in the study of wave guides. We allow the manifold to have also conic singularities. Due to this, the studied class of manifolds include orbifolds. Such non-smooth structures arise in the study of the stability of inverse problems and of the geometrical collapse.

Inverse resonance scattering for on rotationally symmetric manifolds

We discuss inverse resonance scattering for the Laplacian on a rotationally symmetric manifold $M = (0,\infty) \times Y$ whose rotation radius is constant outside some compact interval. The Laplacian on $M$ is unitarily equivalent to a direct sum of one-dimensional Schrödinger operators with compactly supported potentials on the half-line. We prove o Asymptotics of counting function of resonances at large radius o Inverse problem: The rotation radius is uniquely determined by its eigenvalues and resonances. Moreover, there exists an algorithm to recover the rotation radius from its eigenvalues and resonances. The proof is based on some non-linear real analytic isomorphism between two Hilbert spaces.

Inverse spectral theory for perturbed torus

We consider an inverse problem for Laplacians on rotationally symmetric manifolds, which are finite for the transversal direction and periodic with respect to the axis of the manifold, i.e., Laplacians on tori. We construct an infinite dimensional analytic isomorphism between the space of profiles (the radius of the rotation) of the torus and the spectral data as well as the stability estimates: those for the spectral data in terms of the profile and conversely, for the profile in term of the spectral data.

Inverse scattering for Schrödinger operators on perturbed lattices

We study the inverse scattering for Schr{ö}dinger operators on locally perturbed periodic lattices. We show that the associated scattering matrix is equivalent to the Dirichlet-to-Neumann map for a boundary value problem on a finite part of the graph, and reconstruct scalar potentials as well as the graph structure from the knowledge of the S-matrix. In particular, we give a procedure for probing defects in hexagonal lattices (graphene).

We shall prove the non-existence or the discreteness of embedded eigenvalues, the limiting absorption principle for the resolvent, construct a spectral representation, and define the S-matrix. Our theory covers the square, triangular, diamond, Kagome lattices, as well as the ladder, the graphite and the subdivision of square lattice.

Spectral theory and inverse problem on asymptotically hyperbolic orbifolds

We consider an inverse problem associated with $n$-dimensional asymptotically hyperbolic orbifolds $(n \geq 2)$ having a finite number of cusps and regular ends. By observing solutions of the Helmholtz equation at the cusp, we introduce a generalized $S$-matrix, and then show that it determines the manifolds with its Riemannian metric and the orbifold structure.
