Current-driven resonant excitation of magnetic vortex

A magnetic vortex core in a ferromagnetic circular nanodot has a resonance frequency originating from the confinement of the vortex core. By the micromagnetic simulation including the spin-transfer torque, we show that the vortex core can be resonantly excited by an AC (spin-polarized) current through the dot and that the resonance frequency can be tuned by the dot shape. The resistance measurement under the AC current successfully detects the resonance at the frequency consistent with the simulation.

Current-induced Vortex Motion by Spin-Transfer Torque

We investigate the dynamics of a magnetic vortex driven by spin-transfer torque due to spin current in the adiabatic case. The vortex core represented by collective coordinate experiences a transverse force proportional to the product of spin current and gyrovector, which can be interpreted as the geometric force determined by topological charges. We show that this force is just a reaction force of Lorentz-type force from the spin current of conduction electrons. Based on our analyses, we propose analytically and numerically a possible experiment to check the vortex displacement by spin current in the case of single magnetic nanodot.

Effect of Spin Current on Uniform Ferromagnetism: Domain Nucleation

Large spin current applied to a uniform ferromagnet leads to a spin-wave instability as pointed out recently. In this paper, it is shown that such spin-wave instability is absent in a state containing a domain wall, which indicates that nucleation of magnetic domains occurs above a certain critical spin current. This scenario is supported also by an explicit energy comparison of the two states under spin current.

Domain wall displacement triggered by an AC current below threshold

It is theoretically demonstrated that a displacement of a pinned domain wall, typically of order of $μ$m, can be driven by use of an ac current which is below threshold value. The point here is that finite motion around the pinning center by a low current is enhanced significantly by the resonance if the frequency is tuned close to the pinning frequency as demonstrated by recent experiment.

Theory of Current-Driven Domain Wall Motion: A Poorman's Approach

A self-contained theory of the domain wall dynamics in ferromagnets under finite electric current is presented. The current is shown to have two effects; one is momentum transfer, which is proportional to the charge current and wall resistivity ($\rhow$), and the other is spin transfer, proportional to spin current. For thick walls, as in metallic wires, the latter dominates and the threshold current for wall motion is determined by the hard-axis magnetic anisotropy, except for the case of very strong pinning. For thin walls, as in nanocontacts and magnetic semiconductors, the momentum-transfer effect dominates, and the threshold current is proportional to $\Vz/\rhow$, $\Vz$ being the pinning potential.

On Aharonov-Bohm oscillation in a ferromagnetic ring

Aharonov-Bohm effect in a ferromagnetic thin ring in diffusive regime is theoretically studied by calculating the Cooperon and Diffuson. In addition to the spin-orbit interaction, we include the spin-wave excitation and the spin splitting, which are expected to be dominant sources of dephasing in ferromagnets at low temperatures. The spin splitting turns out to kill the spin-flip channel of Cooperon but leaves the spin-conserving channel untouched. For the experimental confirmation of interference effect (described by Cooperons) such as weak localization and Aharonov-Bohm oscillation with period $h/2e$, we need to suppress the dominant dephasing by orbital motion. To do this we propose experiments on a thin film or thin ring with magnetization and external field perpendicular to the film, in which case the effective field inside the sample is equal to the external field (magnetization does not add up). The field is first applied strong enough to saturate the magnetization and then carrying out the measurement down to zero field keeping the magnetization nearly saturated, in order to avoid domain formations (negative fields may also be investigated if the coercive field is large enough).

Permanent current from non-commutative spin algebra

We show that a spontaneous electric current is induced in a nano-scale conducting ring just by putting three ferromagnets. The current is a direct consequence of the non-commutativity of the spin algebra, and is proportional to the non-coplanarity (chirality) of the magnetization vectors. The spontaneous current gives a natural explanation to the chirality-driven anomalous Hall effect.

Effects of Disorder on the Competition between Antiferromagnetism and Superconductivity

Motivated by the observation of unusual magnetism in Ce_xCu_2Si_2 ($x\sim 1$), we study the effect of disorder, such as Ce vacancy, on the competition between superconductivity (SC) and antiferromagnetism (AF) on the basis of the phenomenological Ginzburg-Landau theory. Assuming that the AF-SC transition is of first order in clean system, we show that a single impurity in the SC state can induce staggered magnetization by suppressing the SC around it. For finite concentration of impurities, the first-order AF-SC boundary in the clean case is replaced by a finite region where the SC and the induced AF moments coexist microscopically with spatially varying order parameters. We argue that spin excitation spectrum in the coexistent state has a dual structure of SC gapped mode and the low-energy spin-wave mode. In accordance with the emergence of AF out of SC ground state, the spectral weight will be transferred from the former mode to the latter, keeping the structure of both modes basically unchanged.

Effects of Charge Density Modulation on Incommensurate Antiferromagnetism: Ginzburg-Landau Study

In the vicinity of hole density, 1/8, La-based high-$T_{c}$ superconductors exhibit long-range order of incommensurate antiferromagnetism (IC-AF). Motivated by this observation, we explore the possible stabilization of IC-AF ordering due to the existence of static charge density modulation (CDM). We use Ginzburg-Landau free energy based on the mean field theory of the t-J model. It is shown numerically that three kinds of CDM including a stripe pattern can stabilize static IC-AF ordering. We also argue that such CDMs can cause the saturation of the degree of incommensurability ($η$) as a function of hole density for IC-AF fluctuation. In our framework a principal effect of low-temperature tetragonal (LTT) structure is just to increase $η$ of IC-AF slightly larger only for the stripe pattern.

Pi excitation of the t-J model

In this paper, we present analytical and numerical calculations of the pi resonance in the t-J model. We show in detail how the pi resonance in the particle-particle channel couples to and appears in the dynamical spin correlation function in a superconducting state. The contribution of the pi resonance to the spin excitation spectrum can be estimated from general model-independent sum rules, and it agrees with our detailed calculations. The results are in overall agreement with the exact diagonalization studies of the t-J model. Earlier calculations predicted the correct doping dependence of the neutron resonance peak in the YBCO superconductor, and in this paper detailed energy and momentum dependence of the spin correlation function is presented. The microscopic equations of motion obtained within current formalism agree with that of the SO(5) nonlinear sigma model, where the pi resonance is interpreted as a pseudo Goldstone mode of the spontaneous SO(5) symmetry breaking.

Microscopic Electron Models with Exact SO(5) Symmetry

We construct a class of microscopic electron models with exact SO(5) symmetry between antiferromagnetic and d-wave superconducting ground states. There is an exact one-to-one correspondence between both single-particle and collective excitations in both phases. SO(5) symmetry breaking terms can be introduced and classified according to irreducible representations of the exact SO(5) algebra. The resulting phase diagram and collective modes are identical to that of the SO(5) nonlinear sigma model.

g-on Mean Field Theory of the t-J Model

Implication of our recent proposal [J. Phys. Soc. Jpn. 65 (1996) 687] to treat large-amplitude gauge-field fluctuations around the slave-boson mean-field theory for the t-J model has been explored in detail. By attaching gauge flux to spinons and holons and then treating them as free g-on's which respect the time-reversal symmetry, the optimum exclusion (g) and exchange (\a) statistics have been determined in the plane of doping rate and temperature. Two different relations between \a and g have been investigated, namely g=|\a| (Case1) and g=|\a|(2-|\a|) (Case2). The results indicate that slave fermion is favored at low doping while slave boson at high doping. For two dimension, in Case1 intermediate statistics are found in between, while in Case2 no intermediate statistics are found. The consequences of varying the dimensionality and strength of J have been studied also. The latter has no qualitative effect for both cases, while the former has a profound effect in Case1.
