Emergence of $d \pm ip$-wave superconducting state at the edge of $d$-wave superconductors mediated by Andreev-bound-state-driven ferromagnetic fluctuations

We propose a mechanism of spin-triplet superconductivity at the edge of $d$-wave superconductors. Recent theoretical research in $d$-wave superconductors predicted that strong ferromagnetic (FM) fluctuations are induced by large density of states due to edge Andreev bound states (ABS). Here, we construct the linearized gap equation for the edge-induced superconductivity, and perform a numerical study based on a large cluster Hubbard model with bulk $d$-wave superconducting (SC) gap. We find that ABS-induced strong FM fluctuations mediate the $d \pm ip$-wave SC state, in which the time-reversal symmetry is broken. The edge-induced $p$-wave transition temperature $T_{cp}$ is slightly lower than the bulk $d$-wave one $T_{cd}$, and the Majorana bound state may be created at the endpoint of the edge.

Emergence of strongly correlated electronic states driven by the Andreev bound state in d-wave superconductors

As the surface Andreev bound state (ABS) forms at the open ($1,1$) edge of a $d_{x^2-y^2}$-wave superconductor, the local density of states (LDOS) increases. Therefore, a strong electron correlation and drastic phenomena may occur. However, a theoretical study on the effects of the ABS on the electron correlation has not been performed yet. To understand these effects, we study large cluster Hubbard model with an open ($1,1$) edge in the presence of a bulk $d$-wave gap. We calculate the site-dependent spin susceptibility by performing random-phase-approximation (RPA) and modified fluctuation-exchange (FLEX) approximation in the real space. We find that near the ($1,1$) edge, drastic ferromagnetic (FM) fluctuations occur owing to the ABS. In addition, as the temperature decreases, the system rapidly approaches a magnetic-order phase slightly below the transition temperature of the bulk $d$-wave superconductivity (SC). In this case, the FM fluctuations are expected to induce interesting phenomena such as edge-induced triplet SC and quantum critical phenomena.

Origin of diverse nematic orders in Fe-based superconductors: 45$^\circ$ rotated nematicity in AFe$_2$As$_2$ (A=Cs, Rb)

The origin of diverse nematicity and their order parameters in Fe-based superconductors have been attracting increasing attention. Recently, a new type of nematic order has been discovered in heavily hole-doped ($n_d=5.5$) compound AFe$_2$As$_2$ (A=Cs, Rb). The discovered nematicity has $B_{2g}$ (=$d_{xy}$) symmetry, rotated by $45^\circ$ from the $B_{1g}$ (=$d_{x^2-y^2}$) nematicity in usual compounds with $n_d\approx6$. We predict that the "nematic bond order", which is the symmetry-breaking of the correlated hopping, is responsible for the $B_{2g}$ nematic order in AFe$_2$As$_2$. The Dirac pockets in AFe$_2$As$_2$ is essential to stabilize the $B_{2g}$ bond order. Both $B_{1g}$ and $B_{2g}$ nematicity in A$_{1-x}$Ba$_x$Fe$_2$As$_2$ are naturally induced by the Aslamazov-Larkin many-body process, which describes the spin-fluctuation-driven charge instability. The present study gives a great hint to control the nature of charge nematicity by modifying the orbital character and the topology of the Fermi surface.

Pressure-induced quantum critical point in a heavily hydrogen-doped iron-based superconductor LaFeAsO

An iron-based superconductor LaFeAsO$_{1-x}$H$_x$ (0 $\leq x \leq$ 0.6) undergoes two antiferromagnetic (AF) phases upon H doping. We investigated the second AF phase ($x$=0.6) using NMR techniques under pressure. At pressures up to 2 GPa, the ground state is a spin-density-wave state with a large gap; however, the gap closes at 4.0 GPa, suggesting a pressure-induced quantum critical point. Interestingly, the gapped excitation coexists with gapless magnetic fluctuations at pressures between 2 and 4 GPa. This coexistence is attributable to the lift up of the $d_{xy}$ orbital to the Fermi level, a Lifshitz transition under pressure.

Hexadecapole fluctuation mechanism for s-wave heavy fermion superconductor CeCu2Si2: Interplay between intra- and inter-orbital Cooper pairs

In heavy-fermion superconductors, it is widely believed that the superconducting gap function has sign-reversal due to the strong electron correlation. However, recently discovered fully-gapped s-wave superconductivity in CeCu2Si2 has clarified that strong attractive pairing interaction can appear even in heavy-fermion systems. To understand the origin of attractive force, we develop the multipole fluctuation theory by focusing on the inter-multipole many-body interaction called the vertex corrections. By analyzing the periodic Anderson model for CeCu2Si2, we find that hexadecapole fluctuations mediate strong attractive pairing interaction. Therefore, fully-gapped s-wave superconductivity is driven by pure on-site Coulomb repulsion, without introducing electron-phonon interactions. The present theory of superconductivity will be useful to understand rich variety of the superconducting states in heavy fermion systems.

Multipole fluctuation theory for heavy fermion systems: Application to multipole orders in CeB6

In heavy fermion systems, multipole degrees of freedom make possible the emergence of rich phenomena, such as hidden orders and superconductivities. However, many of them remain unsolved since the origin of higher-rank multipole interaction is not well understood. Among these issues, we focus on the quadrupole order in CeB$_6$, which is a famous multipolar heavy fermion system actively studied for decades. We analyze the multiorbital periodic Anderson model for CeB$_6$, and find that both magnetic, quadrupole, and octupole fluctuations develop cooperatively due to the strong inter-multipole coupling given by higher-order many-body effects, called the vertex corrections. It is found that the antiferro-quadrupole order in CeB$_6$ is driven by the interference between magnetic-multipole fluctuations. The discovered inter-multipole coupling mechanism is a potential origin of various hidden orders in various heavy fermion systems.

Fully gapped s-wave superconductivity enhanced by magnetic criticality in heavy fermion system

In heavy fermion systems, higher-rank multipole operators are active thanks to the strong spin-orbit interaction (SOI), and the role of diverse multipole fluctuations on the pairing mechanism attracts a lot of attention. Here, we study a mechanism of superconductivity in heavy fermion systems, by focusing on the impact of vertex corrections (VCs) for the pairing interaction going beyond the Migdal approximation. In heavy fermion systems, strong interference between multipole fluctuations cause significant VCs, that represent many-body effects beyond mean-field-type approximations. Especially, the coupling constants between electrons and charged-bosons, including the electron-phonon coupling constant, are strongly magnified by the VCs. For this reason, moderate even-rank (=electric) multipole fluctuations give large attractive interaction, and therefore s-wave superconductivity can emerge in heavy-fermion systems. In particular, phonon-mediated superconductivity is expected to be realized near the magnetic criticality, thanks to the VCs due to magnetic multipole fluctuations. The present mechanism may be responsible for the fully gapped s-wave superconducting state realized in CeCu2Si2.

Self-energy driven resonance-like inelastic neutron spectrum in $s_{++}$-wave state in Fe-based superconductors

To elucidate the pairing states in Fe-based superconductors, we perform careful calculation of the dynamical spin susceptibility $χ^S(q, ω)$ at very low temperatures ($T \sim 1$ meV). The feedback effect on both the self-energy and $χ^S(q, ω)$ from the superconducting gap are self-consistently analyzed based on the fluctuation-exchange (FLEX) approximation. In the $s_{+-}$-wave state, which has sign-reversal in the gap function, $χ^S(q, ω)$ at the nesting momentum $q = Q$ shows a resonance peak even when the system is away from the magnetic quantum-critical-point (QCP). In the $s_{++}$-wave state that has no sign-reversal, $χ^S(q, ω)$ shows a large hump structure when the system is close to the magnetic QCP. This result confirms the validity of self-energy driven resonance-like peak in $s_{++}$-wave state proposed in our previous semi-microscopic study: The enhancement in $χ^S(q, ω)$ due to self-energy effect exceeds the suppression due to coherence factor effect near magnetic QCP. We stress that the hump structure in the $s_{++}$-wave state given by the FLEX method smoothly changes to resonance-like sharp peak structure as the system approaches magnetic QCP, which was not reported in our previous studies. The obtained $ω$- and $T$-dependences of $χ^S(q, ω)$ in the $s_{++}$-wave state resemble to the resonance-like feature in inelastic neutron scattering spectra recently observed in Na(Fe,Co)As and FeSe

Pairing mechanism for nodal $s$-wave superconductivity in BaFe$_2$(As,P)$_2$: Analysis beyond Migdal-Eliashberg formalism

The pairing mechanism and gap structure in Ba122 pnictides have been hotly discussed for long time as one of the central issues in Fe-based superconductors. Here, we attack this problem by taking account of the vertex corrections (VCs) for the Coulomb interaction $U$ ($U$-VCs), which are totally dropped in conventional Migdal-Eliashberg formalism. The $U$-VC in the charge susceptibility induces strong orbital fluctuations, and the $U$-VC also enlarges the orbital-fluctuation-mediated attractive interaction. By analyzing the effective multiorbital Hubbard model for Ba122 pnictides, we find that the orbital fluctuations develop in all four $d$-orbitals ($t_{2g}$- and $z^2$-orbitals), by which the FSs are composed. For this reason, nearly isotropic gap function appears on all the hole-type FSs, including the outer hole-FS around Z-point composed of $z^2$-orbital. In contrast, nodal gap structure appears on the electron-type FSs for wide parameter range. The obtained nodal $s$-wave state changes to fully-gapped $s$-wave state without sign-reversal ($s_{++}$-wave state) by introducing small amount of impurities, accompanied by small reduction in $T_c$. The present microscopic theory naturally explains the important characteristics of the gap structure of both hole- and electron-FSs in Ba122 pnictides, without introducing any phenomenological pairing interaction.

Competing Unconventional Charge-Density-Wave States in Cuprate Superconductors: Spin-Fluctuation-Driven Mechanism

To understand the origin of unconventional charge-density-wave (CDW) states in cuprate superconductors, we establish the self-consistent CDW equation, and analyze the CDW instabilities based on the realistic Hubbard model, without assuming any $q$-dependence and the form factor. Many higher-order many-body processes, which are called the vertex corrections, are systematically generated by solving the CDW equation. When the spin fluctuations are strong, the uniform $q=0$ nematic CDW with $d$-form factor shows the leading instability. The axial nematic CDW instability at $q = Q_a = (δ,0)$ ($δ\approx π/2$) is the second strongest, and its strength increases under the static uniform CDW order. The present theory predicts that uniform CDW transition emerges at a high temperature, and it stabilize the axial $q = Q_a$ CDW at $T = T_{CDW}$. It is confirmed that the higher-order Aslamazov-Larkin processes cause the CDW orders at both $q = 0$ and $Q_a$.

Multistage Electronic Nematic Transitions in Cuprate Superconductors: Functional-Renormalization-Group Analysis

Recently, complex phase transitions accompanied by the rotational symmetry breaking have been discovered experimentally in cuprate superconductors. To find the realized order parameters, we study various charge susceptibilities in an unbiased way, by applying the functional-renormalization-group method to the realistic $d$-$p$ Hubbard model. Without assuming the wavevector of the order parameter, we reveal that the most dominant instability is the uniform ($q = 0$) charge modulation on the $p_x$ and $p_y$ orbitals, which possesses the d-symmetry. This uniform nematic order triggers another nematic p-orbital density wave along the axial (Cu-Cu) direction at $Q_a = (π/2,0)$. It is predicted that uniform nematic order is driven by the spin fluctuations in the pseudogap region, and another nematic density-wave order at $q = Q_a$ is triggered by the uniform order. The predicted multistage nematic transitions are caused by the Aslamazov-Larkin-type fluctuation-exchange processes.

Edge-induced strongly correlated electronic states in two-dimensional Hubbard model: Enhancement of magnetic correlations and self-energy effects

To understand nontrivial edge electronic states in strongly-correlated metals such as cuprate superconductors, we study the two-dimensional Hubbard models with open edge boundary. The position-dependences of the spin susceptibility and the self-energy are carefully analyzed self-consistently, by using the fluctuation-exchange (FLEX) approximation. It is found that spin susceptibilities are strongly enlarged near the (1,1) open edge when the system is near the half-filling. The enhancement is large even if the negative feedback from the self-energy is considered in the FLEX approximation. The present study predicts the emergence of nontrivial spin-fluctuation-driven phenomena near the edge, like the quantum criticality, edge superconductivity, and the bond-density-wave order.

Nematicity, magnetism and superconductivity in FeSe under pressure: Unified explanation based on the self-consistent vertex correction theory

To understand the rich electronic phase diagram in FeSe under pressure that vividly demonstrates the strong interplay between the nematicity, magnetism and superconductivity, we analyze the electronic states by including the higher-order many-body effects called the vertex correction (VC). We predict the pressure-induced emergence of xy-orbital hole-pocket based on the first-principles analysis. Due to this pressure-induced Lifshitz transition, the spin fluctuations on the xy orbital are enhanced, whereas those on xz,yz orbitals are gradually reduced. For this reason, nonmagnetic orbital order $O = n_{xz} - n_{yz}$, which is driven by the spin fluctuations on xz,yz orbitals through the intra-orbital VCs, is suppressed, and it is replaced with the magnetism of xy-orbital d-electrons. The nodal s-wave state at ambient pressure ($O > 0$) and the enhancement of Tc under pressure are driven by the cooperation between the spin and orbital fluctuations.

Plain $s$-wave superconductivity near the magnetic criticality: Enhancement of attractive electron-boson coupling vertex corrections

Recent experiments revealed that the plain $s$-wave state without any sign-reversal emerges in various metals near the magnetic criticality. To understand this counter-intuitive phenomenon, we study the gap equation for the multiorbital Hubbard-Holstein model, by analyzing the vertex correction (VC) due to the higher-order electron-correlation effects. We find that the phonon-mediated orbital fluctuations are magnified by the VC for the susceptibility ($χ$-VC). In addition, the charge-channel attractive interaction is enlarged by the VC for the coupling-constant ($U$-VC), which is significant when the interaction has prominent $q$-dependences so the Migdal theorem fails. Due to both $χ$-VC and $U$-VC, the plain $s$-wave state is caused by the small electron-phonon interaction near the magnetic criticality against the repulsive Coulomb interaction. We find that the direct Coulomb repulsion for the plain $s$-wave Cooper pair is strongly reduced by the "multiorbital screening effect".

Superconductivity without hole-pocket in electron-doped FeSe: Analysis beyond the Migdal-Eliashberg formalism

High-Tc pairing mechanism absent of hole-pockets in heavily electron-doped FeSe is one of the key unsolved problems in Fe-based superconductors. Here, this problem is attacked by focusing on the higher-order many-body effects neglected in conventional Migdal-Eliashberg formalism. We uncover two significant many-body effects for high-Tc superconductivity: (i) Due to the "vertex correction", the dressed multiorbital Coulomb interaction acquires prominent orbital dependence for low-energy electrons. The dressed Coulomb interaction not only induces the orbital fluctuations, but also magnifies the electron-boson coupling constant. Therefore, moderate orbital fluctuations give strong attractive pairing interaction. (ii) The "multi-fluctuation-exchange pairing process" causes large inter-pocket attractive force, which is as important as usual single-fluctuation-exchange process. Due to these two significant effects dropped in the Migdal-Eliashberg formalism, the anisotropic $s_{++}$-wave state in heavily electron-doped FeSe is satisfactorily explained. The proposed "inter-electron-pocket pairing mechanism" will enlarge Tc in other Fe-based superconductors.

In-plane anisotropy of transport coefficients in the electronic nematic states: Universal origin of the nematicity in Fe-based superconductors

The origin of the electronic nematicity and its remarkable material-dependence are famous longstanding unsolved issues in Fe-based superconductors. To attack these issues, we focus on the in-plane anisotropy of the resistivity: In the nematic state in FeSe, the relation $ρ_x>ρ_y$ holds, where $ρ_{x(y)}$ is the resistivity along the longer (shorter) Fe-Fe axis. In contrast, the opposite anisotropy $ρ_x<ρ_y$ is realized in other undoped Fe-based superconductors. Such nontrivial material dependence is naturally explained in terms of the strongly orbital-dependent inelastic quasiparticle scattering realized in the orbital-ordered state. The opposite anisotropy between FeSe ($ρ_x>ρ_y$) and other undoped compounds ($ρ_x<ρ_y$) reflects the difference in the number of hole-pockets. We also explain the large in-plane anisotropy of the thermoelectric power in the nematic state.

Functional renormalization group study of orbital fluctuation mediated superconductivity: Impact of the electron-boson coupling vertex corrections

In various multiorbital systems, the emergence of the orbital fluctuations and its role on the pairing mechanism attract increasing attention. To archive deep understanding on these issues, we perform the functional-renormalization-group (fRG) study for the two-orbital Hubbard model. The vertex corrections for the electron-boson coupling ($U$-VC), which are dropped in the Migdal-Eliashberg gap equation, are obtained by solving the RG equation. We reveal that the dressed electron-boson coupling for the charge-channel, $U_{eff}^c$, becomes much larger than the bare Coulomb interaction, $U^0$, due to the $U$-VC in the presence of moderate spin fluctuations. For this reason, the attractive pairing interaction due to the charge or orbital fluctuations is enlarged by the factor $(U_{eff}^c/U^0)^2 >> 1$. In contrast, the spin fluctuation pairing interaction is suppressed by the spin-channel $U$-VC, because of the relation $U_{eff}^s << U^0$. The present study demonstrates that the orbital or charge fluctuation pairing mechanism can be realized in various multiorbital systems thanks to the $U$-VC, such as in Fe-based superconductors.

Theoretical Prediction of the Nematic Orbital-Ordered State in Ti-Oxypnictide Superconductor BaTi2(As,Sb)2O

The electronic nematic state without magnetization emerges in various strongly correlated metals such as Fe-based and cuprate superconductors. To understand this universal phenomenon, we focus on the nematic state in Ti-oxypnictide BaTi2(As,Sb)2O, which is expressed as the three-dimensional 10-orbital Hubbard model. The antiferromagnetic fluctuations are caused by the Fermi surface nesting. Interestingly, we find the spin-fluctuation-driven orbital order due to the strong orbital-spin interference, which is described by the Aslamazov-Larkin vertex correction (AL-VC). The predicted intra-unit-cell nematic orbital order is consistent with the recent experimental reports on BaTi2(As,Sb)2O. Thus, the spin-fluctuation-driven orbital order due to the AL-VC mechanism is expected to be universal in various two- and three-dimensional multiorbital metals.
