Particle-Based Mesoscale Hydrodynamic Techniques

Dissipative particle dynamics (DPD) and multi-particle collision (MPC) dynamics are powerful tools to study mesoscale hydrodynamic phenomena accompanied by thermal fluctuations. To understand the advantages of these types of mesoscale simulation techniques in more detail, we propose new two methods, which are intermediate between DPD and MPC -- DPD with a multibody thermostat (DPD-MT), and MPC-Langevin dynamics (MPC-LD). The key features are applying a Langevin thermostat to the relative velocities of pairs of particles or multi-particle collisions, and whether or not to employ collision cells. The viscosity of MPC-LD is derived analytically, in very good agreement with the results of numerical simulations.

Fluid Vesicles with Viscous Membranes in Shear Flow

The effect of membrane viscosity on the dynamics of vesicles in shear flow is studied. We present a new simulation technique, which combines three-dimensional multi-particle collision dynamics for the solvent with a dynamically-triangulated membrane model. Vesicles are found to transit from steady tank-treading to unsteady tumbling motion with increasing membrane viscosity. Depending on the reduced volume and membrane viscosity, shear can induce both discocyte-to-prolate and prolate-to-discocyte transformations. This dynamical behavior can be understood from a simplified model.

Polyhedral vesicles

Polyhedral vesicles with a large bending modulus of the membrane such as the gel phase lipid membrane were studied using a Brownian dynamics simulation. The vesicles exhibit various polyhedral morphologies such as tetrahedron and cube shapes. We clarified two types of line defects on the edges of the polyhedrons: cracks of both monolayers at the spontaneous curvature of monolayer $C_{\text {0}}<0$, and a crack of the inner monolayer at $C_{\text {0}}\ge0$. Around the latter defect, the inner monolayer curves positively. Our results suggested that the polyhedral morphology is controlled by $C_{\text {0}}$.
