Chiral anomaly as a composite operator in the gradient flow exact renormalization group formalism

The gradient flow exact renormalization group (GFERG) is an idea that incorporates gauge invariant gradient flows into the formalism of the exact renormalization group (ERG). GFERG introduces a Wilson action with a cutoff while keeping vector gauge invariance manifestly. The details of the formalism are still to be worked out. In this paper, we apply GFERG to construct the Wilson action of massless Dirac fermions under the background chiral gauge fields. By formulating the chiral anomaly as a ``composite operator,'' we make the scale invariance of the anomaly manifest. We argue that the same result extends to QCD.

Universal formula for the flavor non-singlet axial-vector current from the gradient flow

By employing the gradient/Wilson flow, we derive a universal formula that expresses a correctly normalized flavor non-singlet axial-vector current of quarks. The formula is universal in the sense that it holds independently of regularization and especially holds with lattice regularization. It is also confirmed that, in the lowest non-trivial order of perturbation theory, the triangle diagram containing the formula and two flavor non-singlet vector currents possesses non-local structure that is compatible with the triangle anomaly.

Small flow-time representation of fermion bilinear operators

Fermion bilinear operators of mass dimension~$3$, such as the axial-vector and vector currents, the pseudo-scalar and scalar densities, whose normalizations are fixed by Ward--Takahashi (WT) relations, are related to small flow-time behavior of composite operators of fermion fields evolved by Lüscher's flow equation. The representations can be useful in lattice numerical simulations, as recently demonstrated by the WHOT QCD collaboration for the chiral condensation of the $N_f=2+1$ quantum chromodynamics (QCD) at finite temperature.

Lattice construction of mixed 't Hooft anomaly with higher-form symmetry

In this talk, we give the lattice regularized formulation of the mixed 't Hooft anomaly between the $\mathbb{Z}_N$ $1$-form symmetry and the $θ$ periodicity for $4$d pure Yang-Mills theory, which was originally discussed by Gaiotto $\textit{et al.}$ in the continuum description. For this purpose, we define the topological charge of the lattice $SU(N)$ gauge theory coupled with the background $\mathbb{Z}_N$ $2$-form gauge fields $B_p$ by generalizing Lüscher's construction of the $SU(N)$ topological charge. We show that this lattice topological charge enjoys the fractional $1/N$ shift completely characterized by the background gauge field $B_p$, and this rigorously proves the mixed 't Hooft anomaly with the finite lattice spacings. As a consequence, the Yang-Mills vacua at $θ$ and $θ+2π$ are distinct as the symmetry-protected topological states when the confinement is assumed.

Chiral symmetry restoration at high matter density observed in pionic atoms

Modern theories of physics tell that the vacuum is not an empty space. Hidden in the vacuum is a structure of anti-quarks $\bar{q}$ and quarks $q$. The $\bar{q}$ and $q$ pair has the same quantum number as the vacuum and condensates in it since the strong interaction of the quantum chromodynamics (QCD) is too strong to leave it empty. The $\bar{q}q$ condensation breaks the chiral symmetry of the vacuum. The expectation value $<\bar{q}q>$ is an order parameter. For higher temperature or higher matter-density, $|<\bar{q}q>|$ decreases reflecting the restoration of the symmetry. In contrast to these clear-cut arguments, experimental evidence is so far limited. First of all, the $\bar{q}q$ is nothing but the vacuum itself. It is neither visible nor perceptible. In this article, we unravel this invisible existence by high precision measurement of pionic atoms, $π^-$-meson-nucleus bound systems. Using the $π^-$ as a probe, we demonstrate that $|<\bar{q}q>|$ is reduced in the nucleus at 58% of the normal nuclear density by a factor of 77 $\pm$ 2% compared with that in the vacuum. This reduction indicates that the chiral symmetry is partially restored due to the extremely high density of the nucleus. The present experimental result clearly exhibits the existence of the hidden structure, the chiral condensate, in the vacuum.

Magnetic operators in 2D compact scalar field theories on the lattice

In lattice compact gauge theories, we must impose the admissibility condition to have well-defined topological sectors. The admissibility condition, however, usually forbids the presence of magnetic operators, and it is not so trivial if one can study the monopole physics depending on the topological term, such as the Witten effect, on the lattice. In this paper, we address this question in the case of 2D compact scalars as it would be one of the simplest examples having analogues of the monopole and the topological term. To define the magnetic operator, we propose the ``excision method,'' which consists of excising lattice links (or bonds) in an appropriate region containing the monopole and defining the dual lattice in a particular way. The size of the excised region is $O(1)$ in lattice units so that the monopole becomes point-like in the continuum limit. We give the lattice derivation of the 't~Hooft anomalies between the electric and magnetic symmetries and also derive the higher-group-like structure related to the Witten effect.

Topology of $SU(N)$ lattice gauge theories coupled with $\mathbb{Z}_N$ $2$-form gauge fields

We extend the definition of Lüscher's lattice topological charge to the case of $4$d $SU(N)$ gauge fields coupled with $\mathbb{Z}_N$ $2$-form gauge fields. This result is achieved while maintaining the locality, the $SU(N)$ gauge invariance, and $\mathbb{Z}_N$ $1$-form gauge invariance, and we find that the manifest $1$-form gauge invariance plays the central role in our construction. This result gives the lattice regularized derivation of the mixed 't Hooft anomaly in pure $SU(N)$ Yang-Mills theory between its $\mathbb{Z}_N$ $1$-form symmetry and the $θ$ periodicity.

Fractional topological charge in lattice Abelian gauge theory

We construct a non-trivial $U(1)/\mathbb{Z}_q$ principal bundle on~$T^4$ from the compact $U(1)$ lattice gauge field by generalizing Lüscher's constriction so that the cocycle condition contains $\mathbb{Z}_q$ elements (the 't~Hooft flux). The construction requires an admissibility condition on lattice gauge field configurations. From the transition function so constructed, we have the fractional topological charge that is $\mathbb{Z}_q$ one-form gauge invariant and odd under the lattice time reversal transformation. Assuming a rescaling of the vacuum angle $θ\to qθ$ suggested from the Witten effect, our construction provides a lattice implementation of the mixed 't~Hooft anomaly between the $\mathbb{Z}_q$ one-form symmetry and the time reversal symmetry in the $U(1)$ gauge theory with matter fields of charge~$q\in2\mathbb{Z}$ when $θ=π$, which was studied by Honda and Tanizaki [J. High Energy Phys. \textbf{12}, 154 (2020)] in the continuum framework.

Unbound states in 17C and p-sd shell-model interactions

Unbound states in 17C were investigated via one-neutron removal from a 18C beam at an energy of 245 MeV/nucleon on a carbon target. The energy spectrum of 17C, above the single-neutron decay threshold, was reconstructed using invariant mass spectroscopy from the measured momenta of the 16C fragment and neutron, and was found to exhibit resonances at Er=0.52(2), 0.77(2), 1.36(1), 1.91(1), 2.22(3) and 3.20(1) MeV. The resonance at Er=0.77(2) MeV [Ex=1.51(3) MeV] was provisionally assigned as the second 5/2+ state. The two resonances at Er=1.91(1) and 3.20(1) MeV [Ex=2.65(2) and 3.94(2) MeV] were identified, through comparison of the energies, cross sections and momentum distributions with shell-model and eikonal reaction calculations, as p-shell hole states with spin-parities 1/2- and 3/2-, respectively. A detailed comparison was made with the results obtained using a range of shell-model interactions. The YSOX shell-model Hamiltonian, the cross-shell part of which is based on the monopole-based universal interaction, was found to provide a very good description of the present results and those for the neighbouring odd-A carbon isotopes - in particular for the negative parity cross-shell states.

Phase structure and critical point in heavy-quark QCD at finite temperature

We study phase structure and critical point of finite-temperature QCD in the heavy-quark region applying the hopping parameter expansion (HPE). We first study finite-size scaling on the critical point on $N_t=4$ lattices with large spatial volumes taking the leading order (LO) and the next-to-leading order (NLO) effects of the HPE, and find that the critical scaling of the Z(2) universality class expected around the critical point of two-flavor QCD is realized when the aspect ratio of the lattice is larger than about 9. This enables us to determine the critical point in the thermodynamic limit with high precisions. By a study of the convergence of the HPE, we confirm that the result of the critical point with the LO (NLO) approximation of the HPE is fairly accurate for $N_t=4$ (6), while we need to incorporate higher order effects for larger $N_t$. To extend the study to large $N_t$ lattices, we then develop a method to take the effects of higher-order terms of the HPE up to a sufficiently high order. We report on the status of our study on $N_t = 6$ lattice adopting the new method.

One-particle irreducible Wilson action in the gradient flow exact renormalization group formalism

We define a one-particle irreducible (1PI) Wilson action in the gradient flow exact renormalization group (GFERG) formalism as the Legendre transform of a Wilson action. We consider quantum electrodynamics in particular, and show that the GFERG flow equation preserves the invariance of the 1PI Wilson action (excluding the gauge-fixing term) under the \emph{conventional\/} $U(1)$ gauge transformation. This is in contrast to the invariance of the original Wilson action under a modified $U(1)$ gauge transformation. The global chiral transformation also takes the \emph{conventional\/} form for the 1PI Wilson action. Despite the complexity of the GFERG flow equation, the conventional form of the gauge and global chiral transformations may allow us to introduce a non-perturbative Ansatz for gauge and chiral invariant 1PI Wilson actions.

Manifestly gauge invariant exact renormalization group for quantum electrodynamics

We formulate quantum electrodynamics on the basis of gauge (or BRST) covariant diffusion equations of fields. This is a particular example of the gradient flow exact renormalization group (GFERG). The resulting Wilson action fulfills a simple gauge Ward--Takahashi identity. We solve the GFERG equation around the Gaussian fixed point to the second order in gauge coupling and obtain the 1-loop beta function and anomalous dimensions. The anomalous dimension of the electron field coincides with that of the fermion field diffused by a gauge covariant flow equation of Lüscher.

Latent heat and pressure gap at the first-order deconfining phase transition of SU(3) Yang-Mills theory using the small flow-time expansion method

We study the latent heat and the pressure gap between the hot and cold phases at the first-order transition temperature $T=T_c$ of SU(3) Yang-Mills theory, using the small flow-time expansion (SF$t$X) method based on the gradient flow. We first examine alternative procedures in the SFtX method -- the order of the continuum and vanishing flow-time extrapolations. We confirm that the final results adopting the two orders, as well as other alternatives in which the perturbative order of the matching coefficients and the renormalization scale of the flow scheme are varied, are all consistent with each other. We also confirm $Δp$ is consistent with zero, as expected from the dynamical balance of two phases at $T_c$. For the latent heat in the continuum limit, we find $Δε/T^4 = 1.117(40)$ for the spatial volume $L^3$ corresponding to the aspect ratio $N_s/N_t=T_cL=8$ and $1.349(38)$ for $N_s/N_t=6$. From hysteresis curves, we show that the entropy density in the hot phase is sensitive to the spatial volume, while that in the confined phase is insensitive.

Gradient flow exact renormalization group -- inclusion of fermion fields

The gradient flow exact renormalization group (GFERG) is an exact renormalization group motivated by the Yang--Mills gradient flow and its salient feature is a manifest gauge invariance. We generalize this GFERG, originally formulated for the pure Yang--Mills theory, to vector-like gauge theories containing fermion fields, keeping the manifest gauge invariance. For the chiral symmetry we have two options: one possible formulation preserves the conventional form of the chiral symmetry and the other simpler formulation realizes the chiral symmetry in a modified form à la Ginsparg--Wilson. We work out a gauge-invariant local Wilson action in quantum electrodynamics to the lowest nontrivial order of perturbation theory. This Wilson action reproduces the correct axial anomaly in~$D=2$.

Gradient flow and the Wilsonian renormalization group flow

The gradient flow is the evolution of fields and physical quantities along a dimensionful parameter~$t$, the flow time. We give a simple argument that relates this gradient flow and the Wilsonian renormalization group (RG) flow. We then illustrate the Wilsonian RG flow on the basis of the gradient flow in two examples that possess an infrared fixed point, the 4D many-flavor gauge theory and the 3D $O(N)$ linear sigma model.

$t \to 0$ extrapolation function in SF$t$X method for the energy-momentum tensor

We theoretically clarify the functional form to be used in $t \to 0$ extrapolation in the small flow time expansion (SF$t$X) method for the energy-momentum tensor (EMT), which facilitates lattice simulation of the EMT based on the gradient flow. We argue that in the $t \to 0$ extrapolation analysis, lattice data should be fitted by a power function in $g(μ(t))$, the flow time dependent running coupling, where the power is determined by the perturbation order we consider. From actual lattice data, we confirm the validity of the extrapolation function. Using the new extrapolation function, we present updated lattice results for thermodynamics quantities in quenched QCD; our results are consistent with the previous study [arXiv:1812.06444] but we obtain smaller errors due to reduction of systematic errors.

Gradient flow exact renormalization group

The gradient flow bears a close resemblance to the coarse graining, the guiding principle of the renormalization group (RG). In the case of scalar field theory, a precise connection has been made between the gradient flow and the RG flow of the Wilson action in the exact renormalization group (ERG) formalism. By imitating the structure of this connection, we propose an ERG differential equation that preserves manifest gauge invariance in Yang--Mills theory. Our construction in continuum theory can be extended to lattice gauge theory.

Latent heat and pressure gap at the first-order deconfining phase transition of SU(3) Yang-Mills theory using the small flow-time expansion method

We study latent heat and the pressure gap between the hot and cold phases at the first-order deconfining phase transition temperature of the SU(3) Yang-Mills theory. Performing simulations on lattices with various spatial volumes and lattice spacings, we calculate the gaps of the energy density and pressure using the small flow-time expansion (SFtX) method. We find that the latent heat $Δε$ in the continuum limit is $Δε/T^4 = 1.117 \pm 0.040$ for the aspect ratio $N_s/N_t=8$ and $1.349 \pm 0.038$ for $N_s/N_t=6$ at the transition temperature $T=T_c$. We also confirm that the pressure gap is consistent with zero, as expected from the dynamical balance of two phases at $T_c$. From hysteresis curves of the energy density near $T_c$, we show that the energy density in the (metastable) deconfined phase is sensitive to the spatial volume, while that in the confined phase is insensitive. Furthermore, we examine the effect of alternative procedures in the SFtX method - the order of the continuum and the vanishing flow-time extrapolations, and also the renormalization scale and higher-order corrections in the matching coefficients. We confirm that the final results are all very consistent with each other for these alternatives.
