Theoretical Description of Nearly Discontinuous Transition in Superconductors with Paramagnetic Depairing

Based on a theoretical argument and Monte Carlo simulations of a Ginzburg-Landau model derived microscopically, it is argued that, in type-II superconductors where {\it both} the paramagnetic {\it and} orbital depairings are important, a strong first-order transition (FOT) at $H_{c2}$ expected in the mean field (MF) approximation never occurs in real systems and changes due to the fluctuation into a crossover. The present result explains why a {\it nearly} discontinuous crossover at $H_{c2}$ with {\it no} intrinsic hysteresis is observed only in a clean superconducting material with a singlet pairing and a high condensation energy such as CeCoIn$_5$.

Effects of Pauli paramagnetism on superconducting vortex phase diagram in strong fields

The Ginzburg-Landau (GL) functional and the resultant phase diagram in strong fields where the Pauli paramagnetic depairing is not negligible are examined in details by assuming the weak coupling BCS model with a $d_{x^2-y^2}$-like pairing. In contrast to previous works on the same subject for spin-singlet pairings in which the orbital depairing effect was not treated consistently with the paramagnetic depairing, the temperature at which the mean field (MF) transition at $H_{c2}$ changes into a discontinuous one lies much above another temperature at which the $H_{c2}(T)$ and a second order transition curve $H_{\rm FFLO}(T)$ between an FFLO-like and the ordinary vortex solids branch, and $H_{\rm FFLO}(T)$ decreases upon cooling. Based on these MF results, details of a real phase diagram near $H_{c2}(T)$-line are examined in terms of Monte Carlo simulation, and it is found that the MF discontinuous transition is changed due to the fluctuation into a crossover which is nearly discontinuous in systems with weak enough fluctuation. These results induced by the paramagnetic depairing are consistent both with recent observations of the MF discontinuous behavior and $H_{\rm {FFLO}}(T)$ in the heavy fermion superconductor CeCoIn$_5$ with weak fluctuation and with their absence in organic materials with strong fluctuation.

Microscopic Study of Quantum Vortex-Glass Transition Field in Two-Dimensional Superconductors

The position of a field-tuned superconductor-insulator quantum transition occuring in disordered thin films is examined within the mean field approximation. Our calculation shows that the microscopic disorder-induced reduction of the quantum transition point found experimentally cannot be explained if the interplay between the disorder and an electron-electron repulsive interaction is ignored. This work is presented as a microscopic basis of an explanation (cond-mat/0105122) of resistive phenomena near the transition field.

Fluctuation Conductivity in Unconventional Superconductors near Critical Disorder

The fluctuation conductivity $σ_{\rm s}$ in bulk superconductors with non s-wave pairing and with nonmagnetic disorder of strength $D$ is studied at low $T$ and within the Gaussian approximation. It is shown by assuming a quasi two-dimensional (2D) electronic state that, only if the gap function $d_μ({\p})$ is, as in a 2D p-wave pairing state, linear in the in-plane (relative) momentum ${\p}_\perp$, the in-plane fluctuation conductivity on the line $D=D_c$ is weakly divergent in low $T$ limit. The present result may be useful in clarifying the true gap function of spin-triplet ${\rm Sr_2RuO_4}$ through resistivity measurements.

Josephson-Vortex-Glass Transition in Strong Fields

A vortex-glass transition due to point disorder in layered superconductors is studied for the case with an applied field {\it parallel} to the layers. Our calculation of tilt responses indicates that, irrespective of the magnitude of the field, the resulting glass phase, Josephson-vortex-glass (JG), should have a transverse Meissner effect, as in a planar splayed glass phase, only for a tilt perpendicular to the layers. Further, focusing on the high field (and/or high anisotropy) region $B \sqrtΓ > ϕ_0/d^2$, where $Γ$ is the mass anisotropy in the Lawrence-Doniach model, the JG transition line $T_{JG}(B)$ is shown to have a similar form to a $B$-$T$ line following from the {\it disorder-free} Lindemann criterion and to decrease with increasing $B \sqrtΓ$, in marked contrast to the disorder-free melting line {\it insensitive to} $B \sqrtΓ$ in such the high field region. This $T_{JG}(B)$ line seems to have been recently observed in a.c. susceptibility and in-plane resistivity measurements in BSCCO and qualitatively explains a field dependence at lower temperatures of previous BSCCO resistivity data showing the so-called in-plane Lorentz force-free behavior.
