Low-energy neutrino responses for 71Ga by electron capture rates, charge exchange reactions and shell model calculations

Weak Gamow-Teller (GT) responses for low-lying states in ${}^{71}\mathrm{Ga}$ are crucial for studying low-energy solar neutrinos and the Ga anomaly, i.e., the possible transition to the sterile state. The responses for the ground state, the first excited state, and the second excited state are evaluated for the first time using the experimental electron capture rates, the experimental charge exchange reaction (CER) rates corrected for the tensor-interaction effect and the theoretical interacting shell model (ISM) calculations. The contributions from the two excited states to the solar and ${}^{51}\mathrm{Cr}$ neutrinos are found to be $4.2 \pm 1.2\%$ of that for the ground state. This is slightly larger than the ISM values but little smaller than the CER values without corrections for the tensor interaction effect. The Ga anomaly is far beyond the uncertainty of the obtained nuclear responses.

Delta isobar resonance effects studied by summed isospin spin strengths and nuclear matrix elements for double and single beta decays

Nuclear matrix elements (NMEs) for double and single beta decays are crucial for studying neutrino properties beyond and within the standard model. The NMEs consist mainly of the spin isospin components. The delta isobar resonance, which is strongly excited by the qualk spin isospin excitation, is shown to quench the spin isospin NMEs by a coefficient around 0.7. Impact of the delta resonance on neutrino studies in nuclei is discused.

The MONUMENT Experiment: Ordinary Muon Capture studies for 0$\nu\beta\beta$ decay

The MONUMENT experiment measures ordinary muon capture (OMC) on isotopes relevant for neutrinoless double-beta (0$\nu\beta\beta$) decay and nuclear astrophysics. OMC is a particularly attractive tool for improving the theoretical description of 0$\nu\beta\beta$ decay. It involves similar momentum transfers and allows testing the virtual transitions involved in 0$\nu\beta\beta$ decay against experimental data. During the 2021 campaign, MONUMENT measured OMC on $^{76}$Se and $^{136}$Ba, the isotopes relevant for next-generation 0$\nu\beta\beta$ decay searches, like LEGEND and nEXO. The experimental setup has been designed to accurately extract the total and partial muon capture rates, which requires precise reconstruction of energies and time-dependent intensities of the OMC-related $\gamma$ rays. The setup also includes a veto counter system to allow selecting a clean sample of OMC events. This work provides a detailed description of the MONUMENT setup operated during the 2021 campaign, its two DAQ systems, calibration and analysis approaches, and summarises the achieved detector performance. Future improvements are also discussed.

Electromagnetic transitions from isobaric analogue states to study nuclear matrix elements for double beta decays and astro-neutrino inverse beta decays

Experimental studies for nuclear matrix elements (NMEs) for neutrinoless double beta decays (DBDs) and astro-neutrino inverse beta decays (IBDs) are crucial for neutrino studies beyond the standard model and the astro neutrino reactions since theoretical model calculations for the NMEs are hard due to the high sensitivities of the NMEs to the models. The NMEs associated with DBDs and IBDs are found for the first time to be studied experimentally by measuring electro-magnetic (gamma) transitions from isobalic analogue states (IASs) of the DBD and IBD nuclei. They are used to help the theoretical model calculations for them. The IAS gamma cross sections and the event rates are estimated to show the feasibility of the experiments.

Calculated event rates for Axion Detection via Atomic and Nuclear Processes

The possibility of detection of 5.5 MeV and 14.4 keV solar axions by observing axion-induced nuclear and atomic transitions is investigated. The presence of nuclear transitions between spin-orbit partners can be manifested by the subsequent de-excitation via gamma ray emissions. The transition rates can also be studied in the context of radiative axion absorption by a nucleus. The elementary interaction is obtained in the context of the axion-quark couplings predicted by existing axion models. Then these couplings will be transformed to the nucleon level utilizing reasonable existing models, which lead to effective transition operators. Using these operators we calculate the needed nuclear matrix elements employing wave functions obtained in the context of the nuclear shell model. With these ingredients, we discuss possibilities of experimental observation of the axion-induced nuclear gamma-rays. In the second part, we will examine the axion-induced production of X-rays (axion-photon conversion) or ionization from deeply bound electron orbits. In this case, the axion electron coupling is predicted by existing axion models, no renormalization is needed. The experimental signal is the observation of directly produced electrons and/or the emission of hard X-rays and Auger electrons, following the de-excitation of the final atom. Critical discussion is made on the experimental feasibility of detecting the solar axions by using multi-ton scale NaI detectors.

Nuclear and detector sensitivities for neutrinoless double beta-decay experiments

Neutrinoless double beta-decay(DBD) is of current interest in high-sensitivity frontiers of particle physics. The decay is very sensitive to Majorana neutrinos masses, neutrino CP phases, right-handed weak interactions and others, which are beyond the standard electro-weal model. DBDs are actually ultra-rare events, and thus DBD experiments with ultra-high sensitivity are required. Critical discussions are presented on nuclear and detector sensitivities for high-sensitivity DBD experiments to study the neutrino masses in the normal and inverted hierarchies.

Axial-vector weak coupling at medium momentum for astro neutrinos and double beta decays

Neutrino nuclear responses associated with medium momentum transfer of q=20-80 MeV for astro neutrinos and double beta decays were studied by using charge exchange reactions on Te128 and Te130. Gamow-Teller and spin dipole nuclear matrix elements are found to be reduced with respect to the pnQRPA matrix elements by the coefficient of around 0.35. The reduction is discussed in terms of the quenching of axial vector coupling (g_A).

FSQP nuclear matrix elements for two neutrino double beta decays

Nuclear matrix elements (NMEs) for two neutrino double beta decays are discussed in terms of the Fermi Surface Quasi-Particle (FSQP) Model. The evaluated NMEs agree with the observed NMEs . The new NMEs for two neutrino double beta decays from Kr78, Cd106, Ba130, and Pd110 were evaluated by FSQP. The NMEs show shell configuration dependence. Impacts of the FSQP NMEs for two neutrino double beta decays on the NMEs for neutrino less double beta decays are discussed.

High purity NaI(Tl) scintillator to search for dark matter

A high purity and large volume NaI(Tl) scintillator was developed to search for cosmic dark matter. The required densities of radioactive impurities (RIs) such as U-chain, Th-chain are less than a few ppt to establish high sensitivity to dark matter. The impurity of RIs were effectively reduced by selecting raw materials of crucible and by performing chemical reduction of lead ion in NaI raw powder. The impurity of $^{226}$Ra was reduced less than 100 $μ$Bq/kg in NaI(Tl) crystal. It should be remarked that the impurity of $^{210}$Pb, which is difficult to reduce, is effectively reduced by chemical processing of NaI raw powder down to less than 30 $μ$Bq/kg. The expected sensitivity to cosmic dark matter by using 250 kg of the high purity and large volume NaI(Tl) scintillator (PICO-LON; Pure Inorganic Crystal Observatory for LOw-background Neutr(al)ino) is 7$\times$10$^{-45}$ cm$^{2}$ for 50 GeV$/c^{2}$ WIMPs.

Magnetic hexadecapole gamma transitions and neutrino-nuclear responses in medium heavy nuclei

Neutrino-nuclear responses in the form of squares of nuclear matrix elements,NMEs, are crucial for studies of neutrino-induced processes in nuclei. In this work we investigate magnetic hexadecapole (M4) NMEs in medium-heavy nuclei. The experimentally derived NMEs, $M_{\rm EXP}$(M4), deduced from observed M4 $γ$ transition half-lives are compared with the single-quasiparticle (QP) NMEs, $M_{\rm QP}$(M4), and the microscopic quasiparticle-phonon model (MQPM) NMEs $M_{\rm MQPM}$(M4). The experimentally driven M4 NMEs are found to be reduced by a coefficient $k \approx 0.29 $ with respect to $M_{\rm QP}$(M4) and by $k \approx 0.33$ with respect to $M_{\rm MQPM}$(M4). The M4 NMEs are reduced a little by the quasiparticle-phonon correlations of the MQPM wave functions but mainly by other nucleonic and non-nucleonic correlations which are not explicitly included in the MQPM. The found reduction rates are of the same order of magnitude as those for magnetic quadrupole $γ$ transitions and Gamow-Teller (GT) and spin-dipole (SD) $β$ transitions. The impact of the found reduction coefficients on the magnitudes of the NMEs involved in astroneutrino interactions and neutrinoless double beta decays are discussed.

Solar neutrino interactions with liquid scintillators used for double beta decay experiments

Solar neutrinos interact with double beta decay detectors (DBD) and hence will contribute to backgrounds (BG) for DBD experiments. Background contributions due to solar neutrinos are evaluated for their interactions with atomic electrons and nuclei in liquid scintillation detectors used for DBD experiments. They are shown to be serious backgrounds for high sensitivity DBD experiments to search for the Majorana neutrino masses in the inverted and normal hierarchy regions.

Status Update of the MAJORANA DEMONSTRATOR Neutrinoless Double Beta Decay Experiment

Neutrinoless double beta decay searches play a major role in determining neutrino properties, in particular the Majorana or Dirac nature of the neutrino and the absolute scale of the neutrino mass. The consequences of these searches go beyond neutrino physics, with implications for Grand Unification and leptogenesis. The \textsc{Majorana} Collaboration is assembling a low-background array of high purity Germanium (HPGe) detectors to search for neutrinoless double-beta decay in $^{76}$Ge. The \textsc{Majorana Demonstrator}, which is currently being constructed and commissioned at the Sanford Underground Research Facility in Lead, South Dakota, will contain 44 kg (30 kg enriched in $^{76}$Ge) of HPGe detectors. Its primary goal is to demonstrate the scalability and background required for a tonne-scale Ge experiment. This is accomplished via a modular design and projected background of less than 3 cnts/tonne-yr in the region of interest. The experiment is currently taking data with the first of its enriched detectors.

Nuclear matrix element for two neutrino double beta decay from 136Xe

The nuclear matrix element for the two neutrino double beta decay (DBD) of 136Xe was evaluated by FSQP (Fermi Surface Quasi Particle model), where experimental GT strengths measured by the charge exchange reaction and those by the beta decay rates were used. The 2 neutrino DBD matrix element is given by the sum of products of the single beta matrix elements via low-lying (Fermi Surface) quasi-particle states in the intermediate nucleus. 136Xe is the semi-magic nucleus with the closed neutron-shell, and the beta + transitions are almost blocked. Thus the 2 neutrino DBD is much suppressed. The evaluated 2 neutrino DBD matrix element is consistent with the observed value.

Resonant photonuclear isotope detection using medium-energy photon beam

Resonant photonuclear isotope detection (RPID) is a nondestructive detection/assay of nuclear isotopes by measuring gamma rays following photonuclear reaction products. Medium-energy wideband photons of 12-16 MeV are used for the photonuclear reactions and gamma rays characteristic of the reaction products are measured by means of high-sensitivity Ge detectors. Impurities of stable and radioactive isotopes of the orders of micro-nano gr and ppm-ppb are investigated. RPID is used to study nuclear isotopes of astronuclear and particle physics interests and those of geological and historical interests. It is used to identify radioactive isotopes of fission products as well.
