Scherk-Schwarz Supersymmetry Breaking for Quasi-localized Matter Fields and Supersymmetry Flavor Violation

We examine the soft supersymmetry breaking parameters induced by the Scherk-Schwarz (SS) boundary condition in 5-dimensional orbifold field theory in which the quark and lepton zero modes are quasi-localized at the orbifold fixed points to generate the hierarchical Yukawa couplings. In such theories, the radion corresponds to a flavon to generate the flavor hierarchy and at the same time plays the role of the messenger of supersymmetry breaking. As a consequence, the resulting soft scalar masses and trilinear $A$-parameters of matter zero modes at the compactification scale are highly flavor-dependent, thereby can lead to dangerous flavor violations at low energy scales. We analyze in detail the low energy flavor violations in SS-dominated supersymmetry breaking scenario under the assumption that the compactification scale is close to the grand unification scale and the 4-dimensional effective theory below the compactification scale is given by the minimal supersymmetric standard model. Our analysis can be applied to any supersymmetry breaking mechanism giving a sizable $F$-component of the radion superfield, e.g. the hidden gaugino condensation model.

Spontaneous and dynamical symmetry breaking in higher-dimensional space-time with boundary terms

In this thesis we study physics beyond the standard model focusing on the quantum field theory in higher-dimensional space-time with some boundary terms. The boundary term causes nontrivial consequences about the vacuum structure of the higher-dimensional theory. We take particular note of two independent solutions to the weak and Planck hierarchy problem: ``low scale supersymmetry'' and ``dynamical electroweak symmetry breaking.'' From a viewpoint of the low scale supersymmetry, we study $F$ and $D$ term supersymmetry breaking effects on sparticle spectra from a boundary. While we also investigate a nonperturbative effect caused by a bulk (nonsupersymmetric) gauge dynamics on a fermion bilinear condensation on a boundary, and analyze the dynamical symmetry breaking on the brane. From these analyses we conclude that the field localization in higher-dimensional space-time involves in a nontrivial vacuum structure of the theory, and the resultant low energy four-dimensional effective theory has phenomenologically interesting structure. In a framework of purely four-dimensional theory, we also construct the above nontrivial effect of localization in the extra dimension.

Wave-function profile and SUSY breaking in 5D model with Fayet-Iliopoulos terms

We systematically study VEVs of a gauge scalar field $Σ$ in a bulk U(1) vector multiplet and scalar fields in brane/bulk hypermultiplets charged under U(1) in the 5D $S^1/Z_2$ orbifold model with generic FI terms. A non-trivial VEV of $Σ$ generates bulk mass terms for U(1) charged fields, and their zero modes have non-trivial profiles. In particular, in the SUSY-breaking case, bosonic and fermionic zero modes have Gaussian profiles. Such non-trivial profiles are useful to explain hierarchical couplings. A toy model for SUSY breaking is studied, and it yields sizable $D$-term contributions to scalar masses. Because the overall magnitude of $D$-term contributions is the same everywhere in the bulk and also on both branes, we have to take into account these contributions and other SUSY-breaking terms to obtain a realistic description. We also give profiles and mass eigenvalues of higher modes.

Field localization in warped gauge theories

We present four-dimensional gauge theories that describe physics on five-dimensional curved (warped) backgrounds, which includes bulk fields with various spins (vectors, spinors, and scalars). Field theory on the AdS$_5$ geometry is examined as a simple example of our formulation. Various properties of bulk fields on this background, e.g., the mass spectrum and field localization behavior, can be achieved within a fully four-dimensional framework. Moreover, that gives a localization mechanism for massless vector fields. We also consider supersymmetric cases, and show in particular that the conditions on bulk masses imposed by supersymmetry on warped backgrounds are derived from a four-dimensional supersymmetric theory on the flat background. As a phenomenological application, models are shown to generate hierarchical Yukawa couplings. Finally, we discuss possible underlying mechanisms which dynamically realize the required couplings to generate curved geometries.

Schwinger-Dyson Analysis of Dynamical Symmetry Breaking on a Brane with Bulk Yang-Mills Theory

The dynamically generated fermion mass is investigated in the flat brane world with (4+delta)-dimensional bulk space-time, and in the Randall-Sundrum (RS) brane world. We consider the bulk Yang-Mills theory interacting with the fermion confined on a four-dimensional brane. Based on the effective theory below the reduced cutoff scale on the brane, we formulate the Schwinger-Dyson equation of the brane fermion propagator. By using the improved ladder approximation we numerically solve the Schwinger-Dyson equation and find that the dynamical fermion mass is near the reduced cutoff scale on the brane for the flat brane world with delta >= 3 and for the RS brane world. In RS brane world KK excited modes of the bulk gauge field localized around the y = pi R brane and it enhances the dynamical symmetry breaking on the brane. The decay constant of the fermion and the anti-fermion composite operator can be taken to be the order of the electroweak scale much smaller than the Planck scale. Therefore electroweak mass scale can be realized from only the Planck scale in the RS brane world due to the fermion and the anti-fermion pair condensation. That is a dynamical realization of Randall-Sundrum model which solves the weak-Planck hierarchy problem.

Chiral phase transition of bulk Abelian gauge theories in the Randall-Sundrum brane world

The chiral phase transition of strong-coupling Abelian gauge theories is investigated in the brane world. It is assumed that gauge boson propagates in an extra dimension, i.e. bulk gauge theories. The phase structure is analytically evaluated by using the low-energy effective theories. We also numerically solve the ladder Schwinger-Dyson equation for the full fermion propagator including Kaluza-Klein (KK) excitation modes of the gauge field. It is found that the chiral phase transition is of the second order, and the critical value of the coupling constant is obtained. The extra dimension has a large influence on the chiral phase transition for the Randall-Sundrum (RS) brane world. It is studied how the number of KK modes affect the chiral phase transition.

Dynamical Fermion Masses Under the Influence of Kaluza-Klein Fermions in Randall-Sundrum Background

The dynamical fermion mass generation on the D3-brane in the Randall-Sundrum space-time is discussed in a model with bulk fermions in interaction with fermions on the branes. It is found that the dynamical fermion masses are generated at the natural (R.-S.) radius of the compactified extra space and may be made small compared with masses of the Kaluza-Klein modes which is of order of TeV.

Dynamical fermion masses under the influence of Kaluza-Klein fermions in extra dimensions

The dynamical fermion mass generation in the 4-dimensional brane is discussed in a model with 5-dimensional Kaluza-Klein fermions in interaction with 4-dimensional fermions. It is found that the dynamical fermion masses are generated beyond the critical radius of the compactified extra dimensional space and may be made small compared with masses of the Kaluza-Klein modes.
