Novel Anisotropy of Upper Critical Fields in Fe$_{1+y}$Te$_{0.6}$Se$_{0.4}$

Studying the upper critical field ($μ_0$$H$$_{\rm{c2}}$) and its anisotropy of superconductors is of great importance because it can provide an unusual insight into the pair-breaking mechanism. Since Fe$_{1+y}$Te$_{1-x}$Se$_x$ exhibits the high $μ_0$$H$$_{\rm{c2}}$ and small anisotropic superconductivity, it has attracted considerable attention. However, some issues related to $μ_0$$H$$_{\rm{c2}}$ are still unknown, including the effect of excess Fe content on $μ_0$$H$$_{\rm{c2}}$ behavior and the origin of the crossover of the $μ_0H_{\rm{c2}}^c $ -- $ T$ and $μ_0H_{\rm{c2}}^{ab}$ -- $T$ curves. In this work, the value of $μ_0$$H$$_{\rm{c2}}$ of Fe$_{1+y}$Te$_{0.6}$Se$_{0.4}$ single crystals with controlled amounts of excess Fe was obtained by resistivity measurements over a wide range of temperatures down to $\sim$ 1.5 K, and magnetic fields up to $\sim$ 60 T. The crossover of the $μ_0H_{\rm{c2}}^c $ -- $ T$ and $μ_0H_{\rm{c2}}^{ab}$ -- $T$ curves was found to be independent of the excess Fe content. The angle dependence of $μ_0H_{\rm{c2}}$ was also checked. The $μ_0H_{\rm{c2}}(θ)$ symmetry at higher temperature near $T_c$ could be fitted by anisotropic G-L model, and novel fourfold symmetry of $μ_0H_{\rm{c2}}$ at lower temperature was found. Based on our spin-locking pairing model, the crossover behavior originates from the anisotropic spin-paramagnetic effect, and the novel fourfold symmetry of $μ_0H_{\rm{c2}}$ could be understood by our extended anisotropic G-L model.

GdV6Sn6: a Multi-carrier Metal with Non-magnetic 3d-electron Kagome Bands and 4f-electron Magnetism

Electronic properties of the single crystal of GdV6Sn6, where non-magnetic V-kagome layers are separated by magnetic Gd-triangular lattice, are investigated. GdV6Sn6 exhibits unique magnetotransport properties at low-temperature such as non-linear Hall resistivity and increase of resistance R in magnetic field H as R ~ H^0.75 up to 56 T with Shubnikov-De Haas oscillations. Investigation of the non-magnetic analogue YV6Sn6 and the first principles calculations reveal these properties are relevant to the bands arising from the V-kagome layer. A magnetic transition at 5 K in GdV6Sn6 modifies the transport properties, pointing to a coupling between Gd-spins on the triangular lattice and carriers in the V-kagome layer.

Geometrical Hall effect and momentum-space Berry curvature from spin-reversed band pairs

When nanometric, noncoplanar spin textures with scalar spin chirality (SSC) are coupled to itinerant electrons, they endow the quasiparticle wavefunctions with a gauge field, termed Berry curvature, in a way that bears analogy to relativistic spin-orbit coupling (SOC). The resulting deflection of moving charge carriers is termed geometrical (or topological) Hall effect. Previous experimental studies modeled this signal as a real-space motion of wavepackets under the influence of a quantum-mechanical phase. In contrast, we here compare the modification of Bloch waves themselves, and of their energy dispersion, due to SOC and SSC. Using the canted pyrochlore ferromagnet Nd$_2$Mo$_2$O$_7$ as a model compound, our transport experiments and first-principle calculations show that SOC impartially mixes electronic bands with equal or opposite spin, while SSC is much more effective for opposite spin band pairs.

Capacitive detection of magnetostriction, dielectric constant, and magneto-caloric effects in pulsed magnetic fields

We report on the development of a capacitance measuring system which allows measurements of capacitance in pulsed magnetic fields up to 61~T. By using this system, magnetic-field responses of various physical quantities such magnetostriction, magnetic-field-induced change in complex dielectric constant, and magneto-caloric effect can be investigated in pulsed-magnetic-field conditions. Here, we examine the validity of our system for investigations of these magnetic-field-induced phenomena in pulse magnets. For the magnetostriction measurement, magnetostriction of a specimen can be measured through a change in the capacitance between two aligned electrodes glued on the specimen and a dilatometer. We demonstrate a precise detection of valley polarization in semimetallic bismuth through a magnetostriction signal with a resolution better than 10$^{-6}$ of the relative length change. For the magnetic-field-induced change in complex dielectric constant, we successfully observed clear dielectric anomalies accompanied by magnetic/magnetoelectric phase transitions in multiferroic Pb(TiO)Cu$_4$(PO$_4$)$_4$. For the measurement of magneto-caloric effect, a magnetic-field-induced change in sample temperature was verified for Gd$_3$Ga$_5$O$_{12}$ with a capacitance thermometer made of a non-magnetic ferroelectric compound KTa$_{1-x}$Nb$_x$O$_3$ ($x$ = 0.02) whose capacitance is nearly field-independent. These results show that our capacitance measuring system is a promising tool to study various magnetic-field-induced phenomena which have been difficult to detect in pulsed magnetic fields.

$^{105}$Pd NMR and NQR study of the cubic heavy fermion system Ce$_3$Pd$_{20}$Si$_6$

We report $^{105}$Pd NMR and NQR measurements on a single crystal of Ce$_3$Pd$_{20}$Si$_6$, where antiferroquadrupolar and antiferromagnetic orders develop at low temperature. From the analysis of NQR and NMR spectra, we have determined the electric field gradient (EFG) tensors and the anisotropic Knight shift ($K$) components for both inequivalent Pd sites - Pd($32f$) and Pd($48h$). The observed EFG values are in excellent agreement with our state-of-the-art DFT calculations. The principal values of the quadrupolar coupling are $(20.37 \pm 0.02)$ MHz and $(5.45 \pm 0.02)$ MHz, for the Pd($32f$) and Pd($48h$) site, respectively, which is large compared to the Larmor frequency defined by the gyromagnetic constant $γ= 1.94838$ MHz/T for $^{105}$Pd. Therefore, the complete knowledge of $K$ and the EFG tensors is crucial to establish the correspondence between NMR spectra and crystallographic sites, which is needed for a complete analysis of the magnetic structure, static spin susceptibility, and the spin-lattice relaxation rate data and a better understanding of the groundstate of Ce$_3$Pd$_{20}$Si$_6$.
