Leveraging Self-Sovereign Identity in Decentralized Data Aggregation

Data aggregation has been widely implemented as an infrastructure of data-driven systems. However, a centralized data aggregation model requires a set of strong trust assumptions to ensure security and privacy. In recent years, decentralized data aggregation has become realizable based on distributed ledger technology. Nevertheless, the lack of appropriate centralized mechanisms like identity management mechanisms carries risks such as impersonation and unauthorized access. In this paper, we propose a novel decentralized data aggregation framework by leveraging self-sovereign identity, an emerging identity model, to lift the trust assumptions in centralized models and eliminate identity-related risks. Our framework formulates the aggregation protocol regarding data persistence and acquisition aspects, considering security, efficiency, flexibility, and compatibility. Furthermore, we demonstrate the applicability of our framework via a use case study where we concretize and apply our framework in a decentralized neuroscience data aggregation scenario.

Global Convergence of Hager-Zhang type Riemannian Conjugate Gradient Method

This paper presents the Hager-Zhang (HZ)-type Riemannian conjugate gradient method that uses the exponential retraction. We also present global convergence analyses of our proposed method under two kinds of assumptions. Moreover, we numerically compare our proposed methods with the existing methods by solving two kinds of Riemannian optimization problems on the unit sphere. The numerical results show that our proposed method has much better performance than the existing methods, i.e., the FR, DY, PRP and HS methods. In particular, they show that it has much higher performance than existing methods including the hybrid ones in computing the stability number of graphs problem.

Self-Sovereign Identity as a Service: Architecture in Practice

Self-sovereign identity (SSI) has gained a large amount of interest. It enables physical entities to retain ownership and control of their digital identities, which naturally forms a conceptual decentralized architecture. With the support of the distributed ledger technology (DLT), it is possible to implement this conceptual decentralized architecture in practice and further bring technical advantages such as privacy protection, security enhancement, high availability. However, developing such a relatively new identity model has high costs and risks with uncertainty. To facilitate the use of the DLT-based SSI in practice, we formulate Self-Sovereign Identity as a Service (SSIaaS), a concept that enables a system, especially a system cluster, to readily adopt SSI as its identity model for identification, authentication, and authorization. We propose a practical architecture by elaborating the service concept, SSI, and DLT to implement SSIaaS platforms and SSI services. Besides, we present an architecture for constructing and customizing SSI services with a set of architectural patterns and provide corresponding evaluations. Furthermore, we demonstrate the feasibility of our proposed architecture in practice with Selfid, an SSIaaS platform based on our proposed architecture.

Sunspot: A Decentralized Framework Enabling Privacy for Authorizable Data Sharing on Transparent Public Blockchains

Blockchain technologies have been boosting the development of data-driven decentralized services in a wide range of fields. However, with the spirit of full transparency, many public blockchains expose all types of data to the public such as Ethereum. Besides, the on-chain persistence of large data is significantly expensive technically and economically. These issues lead to the difficulty of sharing fairly large private data while preserving attractive properties of public blockchains. Although direct encryption for on-chain data persistence can introduce confidentiality, new challenges such as key sharing, access control, and legal rights proving are still open. Meanwhile, cross-chain collaboration still requires secure and effective protocols, though decentralized storage systems such as IPFS bring the possibility for fairly large data persistence. In this paper, we propose Sunspot, a decentralized framework for privacy-preserving data sharing with access control on transparent public blockchains, to solve these issues. We also show the practicality and applicability of Sunspot by MyPub, a decentralized privacy-preserving publishing platform based on Sunspot. Furthermore, we evaluate the security, privacy, and performance of Sunspot through theoretical analysis and experiments.

Dressi: A Hardware-Agnostic Differentiable Renderer with Reactive Shader Packing and Soft Rasterization

Differentiable rendering (DR) enables various computer graphics and computer vision applications through gradient-based optimization with derivatives of the rendering equation. Most rasterization-based approaches are built on general-purpose automatic differentiation (AD) libraries and DR-specific modules handcrafted using CUDA. Such a system design mixes DR algorithm implementation and algorithm building blocks, resulting in hardware dependency and limited performance. In this paper, we present a practical hardware-agnostic differentiable renderer called Dressi, which is based on a new full AD design. The DR algorithms of Dressi are fully written in our Vulkan-based AD for DR, Dressi-AD, which supports all primitive operations for DR. Dressi-AD and our inverse UV technique inside it bring hardware independence and acceleration by graphics hardware. Stage packing, our runtime optimization technique, can adapt hardware constraints and efficiently execute complex computational graphs of DR with reactive cache considering the render pass hierarchy of Vulkan. HardSoftRas, our novel rendering process, is designed for inverse rendering with a graphics pipeline. Under the limited functionalities of the graphics pipeline, HardSoftRas can propagate the gradients of pixels from the screen space to far-range triangle attributes. Our experiments and applications demonstrate that Dressi establishes hardware independence, high-quality and robust optimization with fast speed, and photorealistic rendering.

Riemannian Newton-type methods for joint diagonalization on the Stiefel manifold with application to independent component analysis

The joint approximate diagonalization of non-commuting symmetric matrices is an important process in independent component analysis. This problem can be formulated as an optimization problem on the Stiefel manifold that can be solved using Riemannian optimization techniques. Among the available optimization techniques, this study utilizes the Riemannian Newton's method for the joint diagonalization problem on the Stiefel manifold, which has quadratic convergence. In particular, the resultant Newton's equation can be effectively solved by means of the Kronecker product and the vec and veck operators, which reduce the dimension of the equation to that of the Stiefel manifold. Numerical experiments are performed to show that the proposed method improves the accuracy of the approximate solution to this problem. The proposed method is also applied to independent component analysis for the image separation problem. The proposed Newton method further leads to a novel and fast Riemannian trust-region Newton method for the joint diagonalization problem.

Riemannian optimization on unit sphere with $p$-norm and its applications

This paper deals with Riemannian optimization on the unit sphere in terms of $p$-norm with general $p > 1$. As a Riemannian submanifold of the Euclidean space, the geometry of the sphere with $p$-norm is investigated, and several geometric tools used for Riemannian optimization, such as retractions and vector transports, are proposed and analyzed. Applications to Riemannian optimization on the sphere with nonnegative constraints and $L_p$-regularization-related optimization are also discussed. As practical examples, the former includes nonnegative principal component analysis and the latter is closely related to the Lasso regression and box-constrained problems. Numerical experiments verify that Riemannian optimization on the sphere with $p$-norm has substantial potential for such applications, and the proposed framework provides a theoretical basis for such optimization.

Formalism-Driven Development of Decentralized Systems

Decentralized systems have been widely developed and applied to address security and privacy issues in centralized systems, especially since the advancement of distributed ledger technology. However, it is challenging to ensure their correct functioning with respect to their designs and minimize the technical risk before the delivery. Although formal methods have made significant progress over the past decades, a feasible solution based on formal methods from a development process perspective has not been well developed. In this paper, we formulate an iterative and incremental development process, named formalism-driven development (FDD), for developing provably correct decentralized systems under the guidance of formal methods. We also present a framework named Seniz, to practicalize FDD with a new modeling language and scaffolds. Furthermore, we conduct case studies to demonstrate the effectiveness of FDD in practice with the support of Seniz.

Riemannian conjugate gradient methods: General framework and specific algorithms with convergence analyses

This paper proposes a novel general framework of Riemannian conjugate gradient methods, that is, conjugate gradient methods on Riemannian manifolds. The conjugate gradient methods are important first-order optimization algorithms both in Euclidean spaces and on Riemannian manifolds. While various types of conjugate gradient methods are studied in Euclidean spaces, there have been fewer studies on those on Riemannian manifolds. In each iteration of the Riemannian conjugate gradient methods, the previous search direction must be transported to the current tangent space so that it can be added to the negative gradient of the objective function at the current point. There are several approaches to transport a tangent vector to another tangent space. Therefore, there are more variants of the Riemannian conjugate gradient methods than the Euclidean case. In order to investigate them in more detail, the proposed framework unifies the existing Riemannian conjugate gradient methods such as ones utilizing a vector transport or inverse retraction and also develops other methods that have not been covered in previous studies. Furthermore, sufficient conditions for the convergence of a class of algorithms in the proposed framework are clarified. Moreover, the global convergence properties of several specific types of algorithms are extensively analyzed. The analyses provide the theoretical results for some algorithms in a more general setting than the existing studies and completely new developments for the other algorithms. Numerical experiments are performed to confirm the validity of the theoretical results. The results also compare the performances of several specific algorithms in the proposed framework.

Formalizing and Verifying Decentralized Systems with Extended Concurrent Separation Logic

Decentralized techniques are becoming crucial and ubiquitous with the rapid advancement of distributed ledger technologies such as the blockchain. Numerous decentralized systems have been developed to address security and privacy issues with great dependability and reliability via these techniques. Meanwhile, formalization and verification of the decentralized systems is the key to ensuring correctness of the design and security properties of the implementation. In this paper, we propose a novel method of formalizing and verifying decentralized systems with a kind of extended concurrent separation logic. Our logic extends the standard concurrent separation logic with new features including communication encapsulation, environment perception, and node-level reasoning, which enhances modularity and expressiveness. Besides, we develop our logic with unitarity and compatibility to facilitate implementation. Furthermore, we demonstrate the effectiveness and versatility of our method by applying our logic to formalize and verify critical techniques in decentralized systems including the consensus mechanism and the smart contract.

Extending Concurrent Separation Logic to Enhance Modular Formalization

Nowadays, numerous services based on large-scale distributed systems have been developed to boost the convenience of human life. On the other side, it becomes a significant challenge to ensure the correctness and properties of these systems due to the complex and nested architecture. Although concurrent separation logic (CSL) has partially tackled the problem by specifying systems and verifying the correctness of them, it faces modularity issues. In this paper, we propose an extended concurrent separation logic (ECSL) to address the modularity issues of CSL with the support of the temporal extension, communication extension, environment extension, and nest extension. ECSL is capable of formalizing systems at different abstraction levels from memory management to architecture and protocol design with great modularity. Furthermore, we stick to unitarity and compatibility principles while developing ECSL.

Riemannian optimal identification method for linear systems with symmetric positive-definite matrix

This study develops identification methods for linear continuous-time symmetric systems, such as electrical network systems, multi-agent network systems, and temperature dynamics in buildings. To this end, we formulate three system identification problems for the corresponding discrete-time systems. The first is a least-squares problem in which we wish to minimize the sum of squared errors between the true and model outputs on the product manifold of the manifold of symmetric positive-definite matrices and two Euclidean spaces. In the second problem, to reduce the search dimensions, the product manifold is replaced with the quotient set under a specified group action by the orthogonal group. In the third problem, the manifold of symmetric positive-definite matrices in the first problem is replaced by the manifold of matrices with only positive diagonal elements. In particular, we examine the quotient geometry in the second problem. We propose Riemannian conjugate gradient methods for the three problems, and select initial points using a popular subspace method. The effectiveness of our proposed methods is demonstrated through numerical simulations and comparisons with the Gauss--Newton method, which is one of the most popular approach for solving least-squares problems.

Riemannian stochastic variance reduced gradient algorithm with retraction and vector transport

In recent years, stochastic variance reduction algorithms have attracted considerable attention for minimizing the average of a large but finite number of loss functions. This paper proposes a novel Riemannian extension of the Euclidean stochastic variance reduced gradient (R-SVRG) algorithm to a manifold search space. The key challenges of averaging, adding, and subtracting multiple gradients are addressed with retraction and vector transport. For the proposed algorithm, we present a global convergence analysis with a decaying step size as well as a local convergence rate analysis with a fixed step size under some natural assumptions. In addition, the proposed algorithm is applied to the computation problem of the Riemannian centroid on the symmetric positive definite (SPD) manifold as well as the principal component analysis and low-rank matrix completion problems on the Grassmann manifold. The results show that the proposed algorithm outperforms the standard Riemannian stochastic gradient descent algorithm in each case.

Updated Inflight Calibration of Hayabusa2's Optical Navigation Camera (ONC) for Scientific Observations during the Cruise Phase

The Optical Navigation Camera (ONC-T, ONC-W1, ONC-W2) onboard Hayabusa2 are also being used for scientific observations of the mission target, C-complex asteroid 162173 Ryugu. Science observations and analyses require rigorous instrument calibration. In order to meet this requirement, we have conducted extensive inflight observations during the 3.5 years of cruise after the launch of Hayabusa2 on 3 December 2014. In addition to the first inflight calibrations by Suzuki et al. (2018), we conducted an additional series of calibrations, including read-out smear, electronic-interference noise, bias, dark current, hot pixels, sensitivity, linearity, flat-field, and stray light measurements for the ONC. Moreover, the calibrations, especially flat-fields and sensitivities, of ONC-W1 and -W2 are updated for the analysis of the low-altitude (i.e., high-resolution) observations, such as the gravity measurement, touchdowns, and the descents for MASCOT and MINERVA-II payload releases. The radiometric calibration for ONC-T is also updated in this study based on star and Moon observations. Our updated inflight sensitivity measurements suggest the accuracy of the absolute radiometric calibration contains less than 1.8% error for the ul-, b-, v-, Na-, w-, and x-bands based on star calibration observations and ~5% for the p-band based on lunar calibration observations. The radiance spectra of the Moon, Jupiter, and Saturn from the ONC-T show good agreement with the spacecraft-based observations of the Moon from SP/SELENE and WAC/LROC and with ground-based telescopic observations for Jupiter and Saturn.

Structure-preserving $H^2$ optimal model reduction based on Riemannian trust-region method

This paper studies stability and symmetry preserving $H^2$ optimal model reduction problems of linear systems which include linear gradient systems as a special case. The problem is formulated as a nonlinear optimization problem on the product manifold of the manifold of symmetric positive definite matrices and the Euclidean spaces. To solve the problem by using the trust-region method, the gradient and Hessian of the objective function are derived. Furthermore, it is shown that if we restrict our systems to gradient systems, the gradient and Hessian can be obtained more efficiently. More concretely, by symmetry, we can reduce linear matrix equations to be solved. In addition, by a simple example, we show that the solutions to our problem and a similar problem in some literatures are not unique and the solution sets of both problems do not contain each other in general. Also, it is revealed that the attained optimal values do not coincide. Numerical experiments show that the proposed method gives a reduced system with the same structure with the original system although the balanced truncation method does not.

Riemannian stochastic quasi-Newton algorithm with variance reduction and its convergence analysis

Stochastic variance reduction algorithms have recently become popular for minimizing the average of a large, but finite number of loss functions. The present paper proposes a Riemannian stochastic quasi-Newton algorithm with variance reduction (R-SQN-VR). The key challenges of averaging, adding, and subtracting multiple gradients are addressed with notions of retraction and vector transport. We present convergence analyses of R-SQN-VR on both non-convex and retraction-convex functions under retraction and vector transport operators. The proposed algorithm is evaluated on the Karcher mean computation on the symmetric positive-definite manifold and the low-rank matrix completion on the Grassmann manifold. In all cases, the proposed algorithm outperforms the state-of-the-art Riemannian batch and stochastic gradient algorithms.

Riemannian stochastic variance reduced gradient on Grassmann manifold

Stochastic variance reduction algorithms have recently become popular for minimizing the average of a large, but finite, number of loss functions. In this paper, we propose a novel Riemannian extension of the Euclidean stochastic variance reduced gradient algorithm (R-SVRG) to a compact manifold search space. To this end, we show the developments on the Grassmann manifold. The key challenges of averaging, addition, and subtraction of multiple gradients are addressed with notions like logarithm mapping and parallel translation of vectors on the Grassmann manifold. We present a global convergence analysis of the proposed algorithm with decay step-sizes and a local convergence rate analysis under fixed step-size with some natural assumptions. The proposed algorithm is applied on a number of problems on the Grassmann manifold like principal components analysis, low-rank matrix completion, and the Karcher mean computation. In all these cases, the proposed algorithm outperforms the standard Riemannian stochastic gradient descent algorithm.

A Dai-Yuan-type Riemannian conjugate gradient method with the weak Wolfe conditions

This article describes a new Riemannian conjugate gradient method and presents a global convergence analysis. The existing Fletcher-Reeves-type Riemannian conjugate gradient method is guaranteed to be globally convergent if it is implemented with the strong Wolfe conditions. On the other hand, the Dai-Yuan-type Euclidean conjugate gradient method generates globally convergent sequences under the weak Wolfe conditions. This article deals with a generalization of Dai-Yuan's Euclidean algorithm to a Riemannian algorithm that requires only the weak Wolfe conditions. The global convergence property of the proposed method is proved by means of the scaled vector transport associated with the differentiated retraction. The results of numerical experiments demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed algorithm.
