Nonequilibrium noise as a probe of pair-tunneling transport in the BCS--BEC Crossover

The detection of elementary carriers in transport phenomena is one of the most important keys to understand non-trivial properties of strongly-correlated quantum matter. Here we propose a method to identify the tunneling current carrier in strongly interacting fermions from nonequilibrium noise in the Bardeen-Cooper-Schrieffer to Bose--Einstein condensate crossover. The noise-to-current ratio, the Fano factor, can be a crucial probe for the current carrier. Bringing strongly-correlated fermions into contact with a dilute reservoir produces a tunneling current in between. The associated Fano factor increases from one to two as the interaction becomes stronger, reflecting the fact that the dominant conduction channel changes from the quasiparticle tunneling to the pair tunneling.

Dominant Andreev Reflection through Nonlinear Radio-Frequency Transport

We theoretically propose the laser-induced Andreev reflection between two-component Fermi superfluid and normal states via spatially-uniform Rabi couplings. By analyzing the tunneling current between the superfluid and normal states up to the fourth order in the Rabi couplings, we find that the Andreev current exhibits unconventional non-Ohmic transport at zero temperature. Remarkably, the Andreev current gives the only contribution in the synthetic junction system at zero detunings regardless of the ratio of the chemical potential bias to the superfluid gap, which is in sharp contrast to that in the conventional superconductor-normal metal junction. Our result may also pave a way for understanding the black hole information paradox through the Andreev reflection as a quantum-information mirror.

Spin conductivity spectrum and spin superfluidity in a binary Bose mixture

We investigate the spectrum of spin conductivity for a miscible two-component Bose-Einstein condensate (BEC) that exhibits spin superfluidity. By using the Bogoliubov theory, the regular part being the spin conductivity at finite ac frequency and the spin Drude weight characterizing the delta-function peak at zero frequency are analytically computed. We demonstrate that the spectrum exhibits a power-law behavior at low frequency, reflecting gapless density and spin modes specific to the binary BEC. At the phase transition points into immiscible and quantum-droplet states, the change in quasiparticle dispersion relations modifies the power law. In addition, the spin Drude weight becomes finite, indicating zero spin resistivity due to spin superfluidity. Our results also suggest that the Andreev-Bashkin drag density is accessible by measuring the spin conductivity spectrum.

Polaronic Proton and Diproton Clustering in Neutron-Rich Matter

We show that strong spin-triplet neutron-proton interaction causes polaronic protons to occur in neutron matter at subnuclear densities and nonzero temperature. As the neutron density increases, proton spectra exhibit a smooth crossover from a bare impurity to a repulsive polaron branch; this branch coexists with an attractive polaron branch. With the neutron density increased further, the attractive polarons become stable with respect to deuteron formation. For two adjacent protons, we find that the polaron effects and the neutron-mediated attraction are sufficient to induce a bound diproton, which leads possibly to diproton formation in the surface region of neutron-rich nuclei in laboratories as well as in neutron stars.

Competition between pairing and tripling in one-dimensional fermions with coexistent s- and p-wave interactions

We theoretically investigate in-medium two- and three-body correlations in one-dimensional two-component Fermi gases with coexistent even-parity s-wave and odd-parity p-wave interactions. We find the solutions of the stable in-medium three-body cluster states such as Cooper triple by solving the corresponding in-medium variational equations. We further feature the phase diagram consisting of the s- and p-wave Cooper pairing phase, and Cooper tripling phase, in the plane of s- and p-wave pairing strengths. The Cooper tripling phase dominates over the pairing phases when both s- and p-wave interactions are moderately strong.

Density-Induced Hadron-Quark Crossover via the Formation of Cooper Triples

We discuss the hadron--quark crossover accompanied by the formation of Cooper triples (three-body counterpart of Cooper pairs) by analogy with the Bose--Einstein condensate to Bardeen--Cooper--Schrieffer crossover in two-component fermionic systems. Such a crossover is different from a phase transition, which often involves symmetry breaking. We calculate the in-medium three-body energy from the three-body $T$-matrix with a phenomenological three-body force characterizing a bound hadronic state in vacuum. With increasing density, the hadronic bound-state pole smoothly undergoes a crossover toward the Cooper triple phase where the in-medium three-body clusters coexist with the quark Fermi sea. The relation to the quarkyonic matter model can also be found in a natural manner.

Non-Hermitian topological Fermi superfluid near the $p$-wave unitary limit

We theoretically discuss the non-Hermitian superfluid phase transition in one-dimensional two-component Fermi gases near the $p$-wave Feshbach resonance accompanied by the two-body loss associated with the dipolar relaxation. For the first time we point out that this system gives us an opportunity to explore the interplay among various non-trivial properties such as universal thermodynamics at divergent $p$-wave scattering length, topological phase transition at vanishing chemical potential, and non-Hermitian Bardeen-Cooper-Schrieffer(BCS) to Bose-Einstein condensate (BEC) transition, in a unified manner. In the BCS phase, the loss-induced superfluid-normal transition occurs when the exceptional point appears in the effective non-Hermitian Hamiltonian. In the BEC phase, the diffusive gapless mode can be regarded as a precursor of the instability of the superfluid state. Moreover, we show that the superfluid state is fragile against the two-body loss near the topological phase transition point.

Optical spin conductivity in ultracold quantum gases

We show that the optical spin conductivity being a small AC response of a bulk spin current and elusive in condensed matter systems can be measured in ultracold atoms. We demonstrate that this conductivity contains rich information on quantum states by analyzing experimentally achievable systems such as a spin-1/2 superfluid Fermi gas, a spin-1 Bose-Einstein condensate, and a Tomonaga-Luttinger liquid. The obtained conductivity spectra being absent in the Drude conductivity reflect quasiparticle excitations and non-Fermi liquid properties. Accessible physical quantities include the superfluid gap and the contact for the superfluid Fermi gas, gapped and gapless spin excitations as well as quantum depletion for the Bose-Einstein condensate, and the spin part of the Tomonaga-Luttinger liquid parameter elusive in cold-atom experiments. Unlike its mass transport counterpart, the spin conductivity serves as a probe applicable to clean atomic gases without disorder and lattice potentials. Our formalism can be generalized to various systems such as spin-orbit coupled and nonequilibrium systems.

Stability against three-body clustering in one-dimensional spinless p-wave fermions

We theoretically investigate in-medium two- and three-body correlations in one-dimensional spinless fermions with attractive two-body p-wave interaction. By investigating the variational problem of two- and three-body states above the Fermi sea, we elucidate the fate of the in-medium two- and three-body cluster states. The one-dimensional system with the strong p-wave interaction is found to be stable against the formation of three-body clusters even in the presence of the Fermi sea, in contrast to higher-dimensional systems that suffer the strong three-body loss associated with the trimer formation.

Possible condensation of Cooper triples

We theoretically discuss the possible condensation of Cooper triples, which correspond to a three-body version of Cooper pairs, in three-component Fermi systems with three-body attractive interactions. A macroscopic number of Cooper triples can occupy a zero center-of-mass momentum state in the presence of a Fermi surface of constituent particles, even though the three-body operator exhibits anti-commutation relation associated with the Fermi-Dirac statistics. Such a condensation with internal degrees of freedom is similar to bosonization in a system of infinite-component fermions. We propose a variational wave function for condensed Cooper triples and show that in the ground state, the condensed state is energetically favored compared to the normal state. Also, we discuss effects of the Fermi-surface distortion in a lattice system described by a three-component Hubbard model.

Isothermal compressibility and effects of multi-body molecular interactions in a strongly interacting ultracold Fermi gas

We theoretically investigate the isothermal compressibility $κ_{T}$ in the normal state of an ultracold Fermi gas. Including pairing fluctuations, as well as preformed-pair formations, within the framework of the self-consistent $T$-matrix approximation (SCTMA), we evaluate the temperature dependence of this thermodynamic quantity over the entire BCS (Bardeen-Cooper-Schrieffer)-BEC (Bose-Einstein condensation) crossover region. While $κ_T$ in the weak-coupling BCS regime is dominated by Fermi atoms near the Fermi surface, correlations between tightly bound Cooper-pair molecules are found to play crucial roles in the strong-coupling BEC regime. In the latter region, besides a two-body molecular interaction, a three-body one is shown to sizably affect $κ_T$ near the superfluid phase transition temperature. Our results indicate that the strong-coupling BEC regime of an ultracold Fermi gas would provide a unique opportunity to study multi-body correlations between Cooper-pair molecules.

Role of the effective range in the density-induced BEC-BCS crossover

We elucidate the role of the effective range in the Bose-Einstein-condensate (BEC) to Bardeen-Cooper-Schrieffer (BCS) crossover regime of two-component fermions in three dimensions. In contrast to ultracold Fermi gases near the broad Feshbach resonance, where the interaction can be characterized by the contact-type interaction, the interaction range in general becomes important in the density-induced BEC-BCS crossover discussed in the context of condensed-matter and nuclear systems. Characterizing the non-local interaction in terms of the low-energy constants such as scattering length $a$ and effective range $r$, we show how the crossover phenomena are affected by nonzero effective ranges. In particular, we show that the superfluid order parameter is strongly suppressed in the high-density regime and the sound velocity exhibits a non-monotonic behavior reflecting mechanical stability of the system. Moreover, we point out that the high-momentum tail associated with the contact parameter can be visible when the magnitude of momentum $k$ is much less than $1/r$.

Resonance-to-bound transition of $^5$He in neutron matter and its analogy with heteronuclear Feshbach molecule

We theoretically investigate the fate of a neutron-alpha $p$-wave resonance in dilute neutron matter, which may be encountered in neutron stars and supernova explosions. While $^5$He is known as a resonant state that decays to a neutron and an alpha particle in vacuum, this unstable state turns into a stable bound state in the neutron Fermi sea because the decay process is forbidden by the Pauli-blocking effect of neutrons. Such a resonance-to-bound transition assisted by the Pauli-blocking effect can be realized in cold atomic experiments for a quantum mixture near the heteronuclear Feshbach resonance.

Multi-Particle Tunneling Transport at Strongly-Correlated Interfaces

We elucidate the multi-particle transport of pair- and spin-tunnelings in strongly correlated interfaces. Not only usual single-particle tunneling but also interaction-induced multi-particle tunneling processes naturally arise from a conventional microscopic model without any empirical parameters, through the overlap of the many-body wave functions around the interface. We demonstrate how anomalous tunneling currents occur in a strongly interacting system due to the pair-tunneling process which we derived microscopically. Our formulation is useful for junction systems in various disciplines, including atomtronics, spintronics, and nuclear reactions.

Biexciton-like quartet condensates in an electron-hole liquid

We theoretically study the ground-state properties and the condensations of exciton-like Cooper pairs and biexciton-like Cooper quartets in an electron-hole system. Applying the variational approach associated based on the quartet Bardeen-Cooper-Schrieffer (BCS) model to the four-component fermionic system consisting of spin-1/2 electrons and spin-1/2 holes, we show how Cooper pairs and quartet correlations appear in the equation of state at the thermodynamic limit. The biexciton-like four-body correlations survive even at the high-density regime as a many-body BCS-like state of Cooper quartets. Our results are useful for further understanding of exotic matter in the interdisciplinary context of quantum many-body physics with multiple degrees of freedom.

Cooper quartet correlations in infinite symmetric nuclear matter

We investigate the quartet correlations in four-component fermionic systems at the thermodynamic limit within a variational many-body theory. The Bardeen-Cooper-Schrieffer (BCS)-type variational wave function is extended to the systems with the coexistence of pair and quartet correlations at zero temperature. Special attention is paid to the application of the present framework to an alpha-particle condensation in symmetric nuclear matter, where the coexistence of deuteron and alpha condensations is anticipated. We also discuss how physical properties, such as quasiparticle dispersion, can be modified by the pair and quartet correlations and show a hierarchical structure of in-medium cluster formations in infinite nuclear matter. The present results may also contribute to the interdisciplinary understanding of fermionic condensations beyond the BCS paradigm in many-body systems.

Optical spin transport theory of spin-1/2 topological Fermi superfluids

We theoretically investigate optical (frequency-dependent) bulk spin transport properties in a spin-1/2 topological Fermi superfluid. We specifically consider a one-dimensional system with an interspin {\it p}-wave interaction, which can be realized in ultracold atom experiments. Developing the BCS-Leggett theory to describe the Bardeen-Cooper-Schrieffer (BCS) to Bose-Einstein condensate (BEC) evolution and the $\mathbb{Z}_2$ topological phase transition in this system, we show how the spin transport reflects these many-body aspects. We find that the optical spin conductivity, which is a small AC response of a spin current, shows the spin gapped spectrum in the wide parameter region and the gap closes at $\mathbb{Z}_2$ topological phase transition point. Moreover, the validity of the low-energy effective model of the Majorana zero mode is discussed along the BCS-BEC evolution in connection with the scale invariance at {\it p}-wave unitarity.

Condensation of Cooper Triples

The condensation of Cooper pairs, originating from the Fermi-surface instability due to a weakly attractive interaction between two fermions, opened a new frontier for exploring many-body physics in interdisciplinary contexts. In this work, we discuss the possible condensation of Cooper triples, which are three-body counterparts of Cooper pairs for three-component fermions with a three-body attraction. Although each composite trimer-like state obeys the Fermi-Dirac statistics, its aggregate can form a condensate at zero center-of-mass momentum in the presence of the internal degrees of freedom associated with the relative momenta of constituent particles of momenta close to the Fermi surface. Such condensation can be regarded as bosonization in infinite-component fermions. We propose a variational wave function for the condensate of Cooper triples in analogy with the Bardeen-Cooper-Schrieffer ground state and obtain the ground-state energy.
